Process Essay

For a long time that I wanted to do something with music for my self directed project when i was a freshmen. I have always enjoyed music and album covers and logos and I want to pursue this vein of design after I graduate. I started this project by doing research about famous logos, t-shirts, and album covers. I then started to contact local bands in the Fredonia to Buffalo area. I ended up asking Annasun, a band of some Fredonia students and Buffalo residents to let me design their logo and website and in a way set up a brand for them. I listened to their music over and over while drawing out the thumbnails. The music has a folky and indie feel and they are all quite talented. Eric Corrie started the band so I went to him for most of the initial information. I created a questionaire for the band and i went and talked to them about their music. The artwork they appreciate, favorite music and album covers, what genre they consider themselves, their favorite song they have written. I wanted to get a little insight into what they enjoyed artistically and musically outside of their own music so I would give them the logo and website that would fit their look. At this meeting I also brought my thumbnails I had started to have them choose the ones that they were drawn to. After this I took the ones they were interested in and expanded on the ideas, with five large variations. I honed in on the one design of the thin lines that create a sun and decided to keep pushing the design in different directions. I ended up combining the lines with the geometric triangle or “navajo design as we called it in class. I overlapped the geometric forms with the lines in various ways unto I showed the band the variations and had them choose the one they wanted. The website began with research of various website layouts. I found myself especially interested in interactive sites, so I decided to add an interactive element to the home page. I took the final logo and had the strokes extend out to show a kind of menu that takes you to various connected pages. Also, I went and took photos of the band while filming their music video I did for

Type III. I tried to make the photos encompass their musical feeling so we went to Skylr Carrow’s home (Mandolin and violin musician), which had a very warm country feel. The images had to be full screen in the background of the website because I wanted to show the bond between the band members and create an atmosphere for their music, that listeners and fans could appreciate. I chose to use Meta OT light and Bebas Neue as their display faces because I think that even though they have a folk sound, they take their music seriously and professionally and I wanted to show that through the typefaces used. Another feature of the website is a sound bar at the top that streams their music as soon as you open the page. I think it is important to engage the viewer as soon as possible and music playing is hard to ignore and will help to promote their music to new people. There are seven different sections to the site including: About, Blog, Shows, Merch, The Good Friend Gang, Contact Us and Videos. The about page gives a little background on the bands origin and formation as well as pointing out who plays what instrument in the band. The blog is a place for the band to update their information about their inspirations and to keep fans up to date about whats going on in their everyday lives. The shows page is used to list all their upcoming gigs and allow fans to go enjoy their music live. The merch page, short for merchandise, is used for t-shirt designs, CDs, and more that would have the bands logo and image for sale. The good friend gang is a part of the site specifically asked for by the band. This section is for viewers and fans to submit a picture with their “good friend, being pets, family or friends and the option to add comments about the band or ask them questions directly. The contact us, pretty self explanitory is for emails and social media so fans can get a hold of the band members and for establishments to book the band. The videos are there for people to hear and see the musicians various songs live at venues and jam sessions exclusively with the band. I really enjoyed this project and I have good confidence that the band

is happy with the pieces that I created for them. One thing I wish I would have done differently is to have taken more images of the band together and to have met more with them throughout the process. That being said I am very excited to have my good friend and coder, Tyler Gajewski, code this site to be real and interactive for the Senior show. I also plan on adding additional design elements into the show including posters, t-shirt designs and possibly an album cover, if time permits. Again, I greatly enjoyed this project. It taught me how to communicate outside, abstract ideas into visuals the band could appreciate and grasp. It allowed me to dive into web design which is something I have never been to fond of. However, now that I have gotten my feet wet I think I could continue to improve my skills and create a site for myself someday. vv
