Nicosia’s (W)right Block The buffer zone in Cyprus is perceived as a boundary with substance and depth. It is converted into a moat with layered viewing filters which distort the gaze of the observer. The city appears anarchically structured and fragmented blocking the view of the observer. Blocking the view prevents the movement in the separated Cyprus. The view becomes the first unifying element. CREATING A MIDDLE LANDSCAPE The future city is projected as an endless grid on which people move and live. Or else as an infinite textile, that spread out along the city defines the new status.

In an effort to find axial movements and connections in the city we study the common elements of the two sides of the buffer zone thus defining the new grid. The common land uses means that there is a conceptual link. Public spaces can create new connections. The main axes, as shown by the space syntax, and entry points to the walled city. The observatories of the buffer zone, the only places in the flat Nicosia, from where there is a catholic viewing. Important buildings can create a new network. Breathing Between: City vs. Rock Vitality in a modern city derives from the city itself. Man has become attached and interwoven with the city core, since he can move, live and survive in it. The city is the container of all goods, a container from which it is difficult to get out. Everything connected with it is the focus of attention and a unique passage. The hills are a step from which he can gaze the city detached from it spatially, but still attached conceptually. The city is the purpose of the visit on the hills. We realize, therefore, that the breath of the modern man derives from the city. The stressful pace of everyday life has become a normality. Nature with peace and tranquillity is side-lined and the city becomes overwhelming spatially and conceptually.

Three hubs were selected out of a route in Mountain Lycabettus. Their sectional qualities were the ones that determined the intervention points. The three marginal points become the way to purify from the attachment to the city. With a series of structures we intensify the crucial points. Trying to reach the “surface� where breathing is feasible, the visitor climbs up a stair with high walls. He then swings on a bridge close to the rock comparing city and rock. The last stage finds him in a labyrinthine route where walls operate as blinkers and the view is always alternating between city and rock. The route becomes the invisible hand pushing the visitor and forcing him to stay below the surface, until he runs out of breath.

Laboratory and Archaeological Museum

Integrating a modern building into the highly preserved environment of Kerameikos cemetery is all about the choices. Touching or using the ground below the building creates a connection between the building and the landscape. A perforated cor-ten ribbon leading the visitor through the museum educates him about the exibits and the prosses the archaeologists are using with the findings. Through an incline ramp, the visitor is imported into the ribbon, creating an entrance to the archaeological site. The building volumes, that the ribbon crosses, are used as warehouses and laboratories by the archaeologists and the visitor can pass by or into them. An auditorium is also accessible by public for multiple cultural events. Collaboration: Virvidaki Ioanna
