PLAYGROUND URBAN OPEN SPACES - RECREATION

Site plan: Microstation Sections: Microstation og Photoshop Mood: Photoshop

This course dealt with green open spaces and recreational areas. The final project was to design a 6 ha playground. The concept of my design was the connection between Icelandic towns and the countryside and the design of the playground was to simulate a farm and its surroundings.

The playground equipment would be custom made and look like small scale tractors, heyrolls, farm animals and houses. The landscape elements of the park would have reference to the natural surroundings of a farm - forest, cliffs, fields and lakes.

OUTDOOR MUSEUM LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS

Map: ArcGis Mood: Photoshop

Landscape analysis was a course that highlighted the local specialities of a geographical area with respect to biodiversity and rural development. The municipality of Hvalfjarðarsveit was reviewed and a vision for a future development of a specific area within the municipality was formulated. My design project focused on an old and abandoned farm, Fiskilækur, that is located close by a highway. Nobody has lived at

the farm for many years so the weather and winds have made big impact on the houses and surroundings. Fiskilækur is located just 55 kilometers from Reykjavík and due to the location there lie great opportunities for future development. My vision was to build up an outdoor museum with hiking trails and resting places that would give information about the history of old and abandoned farms in Iceland.

THE MAIN STREET PLANNING AND PUBLIC HEALTH

Site plan: Microstation og Photoshop Mood: Photoshop

This course introduced the important aspects that our environment affects health and well-being. The aim of the project was to design a livable environment that would have positive impact on public health. My concept was to design a green main street in the town of Akranes. The main street is a wide 4 lane street that leads to the town center. The design narrowed down the space for cars and increased space for walking and bicycling. Bluegreen solutions were a big part of the design - rainwater solution system that runs along the street and contributes to more livable urban space.

CITY CENTER

Site plan: Microstation og Photoshop Mood: Sketchup og Photoshop

The course focused on site planning and the context of architecture and the built environment. The main project of the course was to design a future site plan for Skeifan city center in Reykjavik. My concept was to put people first with a project called Public Life in Skeifan - vibrant and livable community. Today a large number of people spend time in the area and mostly running errands. It is a place were people are and people meet, either inside the commercial buildings or outside on the parking lots. The weakness of the area is that a great part of public spaces are grey parking areas.

The focus of the design was to create dense city streets with mixed use of commercial and residential buildings and shorter distances to public transport. Green parks and city squares with good lighting conditions, vegetation and other elements that would increase the positive experience of the area.

Livable environment: Supports social interaction Limits stress factors Increases positive experience

SHARED STREET

Site plan: Microstation og Photoshop Sections: Microstation og Photoshop Mood: Microstation, Sketchup og Photoshop

The final project in the course Site Planning was to move from the big picture of site plan and zoom into a smaller unit, designing an urban space. The project was named Skeifustræti - shared street. The concept was that the street was a square. The traffic lane was given the role of a pedestrian street with a maximum speed of 15 km/h. The street and the space between the buildings would form a square.

To give pedestrians priority, the surface of the road would be different from surrounding areas - indicating the traffic speed is lower. There would also be the possibility of temporarily closing the street when special events are held. Alongside the street there would be a channel with bluegreen water solutions - a part of the sustainable system of the neighbourhood. Over the water channels, iron plates are on a regular basis giving access across the channel. The iron plates also have a built-in lighting that illuminates the pathway.

,,CHRISTMAS MARKET, FRIENDS AND FAMILIES. THE STREET IS ILLUMINATED AND PEOPLE ARE HAVING A GOOD TIME“

Lighting is an important part for enhancing a vibrant and safe environment. Characteristic lighting promotes the uniqueness of the area and attracts public life. Along the street there are guides of rusty iron that illuminate the road. White street lamps that simulate trees would give character to the environment during darker hours.

DALVÍK CITY CENTER

Site plan: Microstation og Photoshop Analysis: Microstation og PowerPoint Mood: Microstation, Sketchup og Photoshop

My bachelor thesis discussed the attraction of public spaces and the role of design for enriching public life in urban areas. Attractive urban spaces can even make a difference for business in small towns. The project summarized what landscape elements can increase the quality of urban spaces e.g. retreat, vegetation and outdoor lighting. Dalvík town center was used as case study of how various design elements can be used to strengthen the town space. The project analysed the town plan, spaces and history and used to create a design proposal.

24

25

The design proposal connects the heart of the city center to the heart of the business community, which is the harbor. The stairway down the hill to the harbour has railing shaped like waves. The sides of the stairs are designed so that each staircase sits together and can be used as a sitting area for pedestrians to enjoy the view. Below the hill is a playground that is characterized by the harbor area. There is a sandbox resembling a boat, buoys, and more, and the playground could be built sustainably with existing elements, thus taking on a temporary and variable image.

NATTLJUS ESKILSTUNA LIGHT AND OUTDOOR SPACES

Nattljus is a outdoor lighting festival that is held every second year in the Swedish city of Eskilstuna. The students in the program of Architectural Lighting Design at KTH were invited to participate in the fall of 2016. It was a group project in which each group was assigned an area where we should come up with a design concept and create an installation during the festival. It was interesting to watch families walk around, children play with their silhouettes and teenagers to take pictures of them with the lights. It was also amazing to see how lighting could change the environment and attract people to the area. My group was assigned a public square, which stands by a cinema that is a little known and a kind of hidden treasure in the neighborhood. Our goals were to focus on the square and cinema as a whole and create a lighting point for the people in the community. Red lighting was the main character and created some hot spots across the square.

NEIGHBOURHOOD SITE PLAN

m.sc. urban planning

Studio group project that focused on creating a site plan proposal for a 60 ha development area in central Kópavogur. Miðgarður is an sustainable vision for the future of the neighbourhood, with diverse social activities as its guiding principle. Green central park connects the community and all the residents have good access to a green and car-free environment that supports the public health. A wide range of residential units support the diverse needs of residents, who can also rent work spaces and workshops and grow food in greenhouses throughout the year.
