SPECULATIONS THROUGH INHABITATION

THE FIFTH FACADE

54

The roof is often overlooked as a usable space. One way a roof can advertise itself to a pedestrian is by meeting the street. Another way is by interacting with the building. Interruptions of the roof can create a dialogue between the fifth facade and the interior spaces.

INTERRUPTIONS TO THE ROOF

4

A lightwell is generally a vertical shaft creating a break in a roof with the purpose of daylighting spaces. Introuducing multiple purposes and qualities to these interruptions in the roof can grab the attention of users and encourage movement among multiple levels. The four main purposes studied are daylighting, structure, circulation, and play.

This study focuses on the structural purpose of the lightwell. The materiality allows for a juxtapositionthe heaviness of the concrete lightwell versus the light Glulam framed roof.

This model focuses on daylighting. By creating this floating element, a halo of light can be experienced in the surrounding spaces of the lightwell.

This model studies daylighting by using a translucent material which makes the lightwell appear to be glowing once it is illuminated. This transluscency also allows for a view of people circulating the staircase that lines the perimeter of the shaft.

Vertical structure is integrated into this lightwell with four heavy columns at the corners, allowing for glass to be used in between to daylight the space and view circulation on the staircase.

This lightwell’s structure is two vertical walls opposite each other, allowing for two more transluscent walls used for daylighting and views of circulation.

Structure is a main focus of this model, with a large column supporting the roof. A break in the column, and in the roof, allows for play to be introduced into the model with a slide.

Circulation can be seen with the structural staircase, a heavy, solid juxtaposition to the light, transluscent slide used for play. The transluscency of the slide along with the breaks in the roof allow for daylighting.

SPECULATIONS THROUGH INHABITATION

38

When in one space, people need an incentive to move to another. These lightwells serve as such. Visual and physical interactions among the programmed spaces of the roof park, garden, market, and supermarket, must be made in order to engage users.

THE FIFTH FACADE

54

The form of the roof alone can encourage its use. By interacting with the street, pedestrians can be drawn in with easy access.

These precedents all have inhabitable green roof spaces. The models above each study how these projects succesfully used the form of the roof to encourage its use through itsW interaction with the building and with the ground.
