thesis fall 2019 this past semester began with a study of roofs and how a roof can interact with a
building and with the ground. this project is designed on an empty lot in baltimore city.
the program aims to have a roof park with a garden that is accessible from the street, a covered market under the roof, and a grocery store below.
interruptions of the roof
became a necessary exploration with part of the building being underground.

a room & a garden fall 2017 this is a 100 square foot room on the edge of virginia tech’s
campus. the small room serves as a place for someone to relax and enjoy the site.
the butterfly roof collects rainwater to waterfall into a small fountain parallel to the creek on the site.
the main structure of the building is steel columns,
which support a studded wall clad in wood panels. the
columns’ support allows for ribbon windows along the
top and bottom of the wall, making the walls appear to be
floating off the ground, and the roof to be floating above the walls.

fragment fall 2017 this “fragment” is a 1/2 full scale model using true
materials. it represents an important connection in the
“room and a garden”
building’s structure.
the connections explored in this fragment are at a corner condition, where the column meets the ground, where the
glass meets the ground, where the column meets the studs,
and where the glass meets the studs.
the exploration of this connection was important to the overall design of the building as it allowed for the ribbon windows at the base of the building.

architecture building Spring 2018 the site for this project is next
to cowgill hall, virginia tech’s
current architecture building. the building accommodates a cafe, a gallery, and 3 pin-up spaces.
this building has an
ivy-covered space underneath the pilotis, creating a unique escape on campus.
the steel columns are the
main structure, supporting concrete walls which allow for ribbon windows along the top and bottom of the walls.
this utilizes a similar structure to that of the fragment. the columns also support benches which serve a variety of purposes depending on the program of the space where they are located. along with the
column-supported concrete walls, there are two other wall types- continuous
concrete walls, and glass
curtain walls. each wall is utilized in a specific place due to the interior space’s purpose.

virginia beach community Spring 2019 this site in virginia beach is currently a trailer park.
this new community is planned in a way that it can be integrated into the
surrounding neighborhoods. it also takes on a new urbanist approach. the community has single family homes.
rowhomes, and mixed-use spaces with retail below and apartments above. the
housings aims to create affordable prefabricated apartments to replace what would be removed.
the central focus of this
community is a public park. in this area of virginia beach is
the vibe creative district. this collective puts on a “mural
fest each year where local artists paint the outside walls of local businesses. walls in this park now will serve as canvases for this event each year.

european fall travel Fall 2018 i participated in virginia
tech architecture school’s european travel program.
throughout the program we visited 37 cities in germany,
france, austria, switzerland, and spain.
every day we visited multiple buildings, gaining
understanding of the architecture through
sketching and photographing. my skills improved throughout the trip. i began to understand
how to more clearly represent a building on paper and how to pick out a main idea from the architecture and express it.
the program not only exposed me to new architecture but also new
cultures and new experiences. it taught me independence, patience, and adaptability.
