Crowd attends Cortez Bridge meeting The Florida Department of Transportation has dropped the rehabilitation alternative for the 59-year-old bridge.

HOLMES BEACH – A crowd of around 100 people attended the Cortez Bridge replacement alternatives meeting at St. Bernard Catholic Church Tuesday, Aug. 9, to gather information and give opinions on what kind of a bridge should replace the aging drawbridge that connects the Island at Bradenton Beach to the mainland.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has plans to repair the 17.5foot clearance drawbridge or replace it with one of three options: a 21-foot clearance drawbridge; a 35-foot clearance drawbridge: or a 60-foot clearance fixed span bridge.

The no-build (repair) alternative would fix the bridge to last 10 years. It would tentatively begin in 2025. Repairs made in 2015 would last until then. It would require the bridge to be closed for nine weeks while work is done on the structure.

With either the repair or rehabilitate choice, the bridge would retain its cross-section layout of two traffic lanes with walkways on both sides and curbing, but no shoulders.

With the replacement alternatives, the cross-section layout would contain two 12foot traffic lanes, two 7-foot-wide buffered bicycle lanes, two 10-foot-wide shoulders and two 10-foot-wide sidewalks separated

from traffic by barrier walls.

Those attending were encouraged to submit their choices.

Former Bradenton Beach Mayor Jack Clarke said he prefers the 35-foot drawbridge, which FDOT estimates would reduce the amount of bridge openings by one third over the current drawbridge.

Nancy Deal, from the citizen’s action group Save Anna Maria (SAM), was wearing and passing out stickers that said “Repair it.”

Manatee County Commissioner Betsy Benac said she is aware the bridge is in need of repair or replacement, but she would be concerned for the people of Cortez if the replacement bridge is too high.

Pioneer SAM member James Kissick said he has the solution, a new bridge to link to 53rd Avenue on the mainland and cross the bay at an area where there is less intrusion on the seagrass and landing on south Coquina Park Bayside.

Carl and Deborah McKenzie live in Harbor Landings Estates in Cortez and they want a bridge to handle more traffic.

“For us, traffic has become a nightmare,” Deborah McKenzie said.

Carl McKenzie said he prefers a 60-foot fixed span that would not have to open up for boat traffic. He said even if the bridge has to be longer to accommodate the higher span, they might offer a buyout on residences near the bridge.

Doug Zang, from FDOT, said they will still have to complete their Project Development and Environment study before they can proceed to the design phase. He said the budget for the design phase would be in the 2018 fiscal budget.

So far, there is no money in the FDOT budget for the bridge’s repair or replacement.

Planning commission to meet The Holmes Beach Planning Commission will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. to discuss the requests from Gloria Dei Lutheran Church for a rezone and comprehensive plan amendment.

The church, at 6608 Marina Drive, has asked to rezone a portion of its property from PSP (public/semi public) to R-2 (two family residential). The request came after a committee explored options, and members determined that the only way to save the church was to sell off a portion of the property. The planning commission’s role is to determine if the request is in compliance with the comprehensive plan.

City receives two bids on Grassy Point Holmes Beach has received bids on the boardwalk at Grassy Point from Tampa Contracting Services, Inc. (TCS) and E.O. Koch Construction Co. Bids are for Phase I, a boardwalk to begin where the current trail ends and proceed to a circular upland area.

Bids also could include Phase II, the boardwalk from the circular area to the future observation deck.

TCS bid $72,695 for Phase I to be competed in 90 days and $108,531 for Phase II to be completed in 120 days.

Koch bid $94,30 for Phase I to be completed in 90 days and $159,670 for Phase II to be completed at the same time. Bids will be reviewed by the city commission, which will make the final decision.

Animals survive Egmont fire

EGMONT KEY – Most of the wildlife on Egmont Key survived a wildfire that lasted four days late last month, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

A biological assessment last Thursday revealed that about a dozen of the key’s approximately 1,000 box turtles perished in the fire, but the key’s gopher tortoises dug safely into their burrows as the fire passed over them, federal wildlife officer Stan Garner said.

“They were out the morning after the fire,” he said.

Box turtles are not an imperiled species; gopher tortoises are a state-designated threatened species, one step below the most imperiled category, endangered.

The fire cleared out some old vegetation, which will encourage the growth of native plants and provide tender shoots for gopher tortoises and box turtles to eat, Garner said.

About 40 sea turtle nests on the key also survived the fire, buried in the sand, he said, adding that the fire did not reach the key’s seabird colony.

Buildings on the key also were spared, including historic Fort Dade, the 1858 lighthouse and the Tampa Bay harbor pilots’ station, which operated on emergency generator power after the fire caused a power outage.

Kaleta arraigned, hearing set

A 51-year-old man drowned in the Intracoastal Waterway near the Anna Maria Island Bridge around noon on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

According to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report, Andy Lewis Milton, Sr., whose city of residence Milton is unknown, was bicycling across the bridge when his straw hat blew off his head and landed in the water. Milton reportedly rode his bike back to the end of the bridge, removed his clothing and went into the water to retrieve it.

A Florida Wildlife Commission officer was driving over the bridge at the time the incident happened and he saw Milton in the water, clinging to a channel marker. Milton told him he was trying to retrieve his hat. Milton started swimming back to shore but ended up going under the water, where he drowned.

Manatee County Marine Rescue and West Manatee Fire Rescue joined in the search, and when they found him, he was taken to Blake Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Office said Milton was believed to be homeless.

BRADENTON – Island vacation homebuilder Shawn Kaleta, 38, was arraigned Monday, Aug. 8, for an auto accident that occurred July 8, in Bradenton. Police arrested him and charged him with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Kaleta District Judge Charles Sniffen set a pre-trial conference for Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 1:30 p.m. in his chambers.

The accident occurred on Manatee Avenue and 64th Street East Court. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Kaleta’ s Tesla rear-ended a Kia, which was pushed into another Kia. When a state patrolman responded, Kaleta was gone.

An independent witness sitting at a Starbucks observed a black Tesla driving through the parking lot, dragging its front bumper and called the Florida HighwayPatrol. She said the Tesla left the scene after driving through another parking lot. The Highway Patrol officer got an identity of the car’s owner, which was Kaleta, and called him, leaving a message. A growing concern The Island’s highranking police officers are preaching awareness, not panic, in regard to the heroin problem that exists on the mainland.

ANNA MARIA ISLAND – No one in the Island’s law enforcement community is suggesting there is a heroin epidemic on the Island, but three recent, non-fatal overdoses in Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach have elevated concerns.

During the Thursday, Aug. 11, City Commission meeting, Sgt. Russell Schnering, from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, addressed commissioners on this topic. Schnering serves as the city’s chief law enforcement officer.

“I wanted to talk about the heroin epidemic we’re having in Manatee County. I’m not talking about Anna Maria

Island per se, but in Manatee County,” he said.

According to Schnering, the Sheriff’s Office responded in July to 289 overdoses countywide. This does not include overdoses reported to other law enforcement agencies or instances where friends or family members transported an overdose victim to a medical facility.

Concerning Anna Maria, Schnering said, “We haven’t had an OD out here reported to the Sheriff’s Office since June of 2015, and we weren’t keeping records before that.

I know Homes Beach had a couple Saturday night.”

He said the two people who overdosed together in Holmes Beach each required multiple doses of Narcan to revive them.

Heroin is an opiate, and Narcan is a brand name version of naloxone, which when injected or administered through a nasal inhaler, offsets the immediate effects of heroin by

“We don’t want the liability or the expense,” Schnering said.

CVS pharmacies in Florida recently began selling Narcan and naloxone, an over

the counter drug obtained from the pharmacist without a prescription. The CVS in Holmes Beach is part of this program and Walgreen’s in Holmes Beach is expected to join soon.

In generic injectable form, a two-dose package of naloxone sells for approximately $45.

Depending on the brand, the inhalant sells for $100-$140.

“When we closed down those pill mills, people still had the addiction to the opiates. Unfortunately, heroin is even less expensive. It’s easily found on the street, and that’s what they’ve turned to. We’re having these street-level drug users playing chemists and pharmacists, and they’re cutting the heroin with fentanyl.

Fentanyl is what’s killing these people,” Schnering said.

“That’s animal grade fentanyl, 10,000 times more potent than morphine. If that starts going around, I guess we won’t have a heroin epidemic for very much longer because many people will die,” Schnering said.

EDITORIAL Terms of endearment

W

hat’s better, the commissioner you know or the commissioner you don’t?

That’s a question Bradenton Beach voters are now being asked in the primary election that concludes on Tuesday, Aug. 30. As one of two charter-related questions on the August ballot, the time has come for city voters to determine whether term limits are maintained or discarded. This, in turn, will determine whether third-term Commissioner Ed Straight serves a fourth consecutive term.

If city voters eliminate term limits, Straight, who is currently running unopposed in Ward 2, would be allowed to serve another two-year term and additional terms after that.

If voters maintain term limits, Straight will be declared ineligible for the general election in November, and city voters will have no say in who their next Ward 2 commissioner is. This would then leave it up to Mayor Bill Shearon, Commissioners Ralph Cole and Jake Spooner, and the winner of the John Chappie/Bill Vincent Ward 4 race to nominate and reach majority agreement on the next Ward 2 representative.

iven that Straight was the only candidate to express any serious interest in running for this seat, finding a replacement who lives in Ward 2, which begins just north of 17th Street North and extends north to the south side of 23rd Street North, might prove challenging.

And if the commission becomes deadlocked in a 2-2 tie over two nominated candidates, the city clerk would assist in making that determination by lot – which means cutting cards, throwing dice, drawing straws or some other game of chance.

Bradenton Beach is the only Island city that has imposed term limits on its elected officials in recent years. No such limits exist in Holmes Beach or Anna Maria.

Last summer, the Charter Review Committee unanimously favored eliminating term limits. A divided and somewhat indecisive City Commission then voted 3-2 in opposition to placing the CRA Committee’s recommended term limit question on the November 2015 ballot.

My husband and I live near the area (Longbar Pointe) that Mr. Carlos Beruff wants to develop.

Our families moved here decades ago because of the unique, accessible natural wonders of Anna Maria Island Sound and Sarasota Bay. Now, several developers are proposing to harm the area’s waterways. First and foremost is Mr. Beruff. He has repeatedly pushed for zoning changes that would undo what the last 30 years of waterway cleanup and protection have achieved and has amassed a wealth of mitigation credits he cannot use if current pro-conservation prohibi-

tions are upheld.

Please deny him the use of mitigation credits and protect the waterways for us, our neighbors and for all of Tampa Bay, forever.

Can't handle the cans Last week, we received a new big blue can for recycling. And I mean big and huge and heavy!

The problem is that this can is so heavy that if I put anything in it, I will be unable to take it to the street! Whatever made the county think that these new cans would be the best way to handle recycling?

I, for one, can’t even handle the empty can. So what are the older folks who live in unincorporated Manatee County to do? So much for

further recycling, as it just became impossible.

Aesthetics team to choose a theme Committee members will recommend design, colors and number of enhancements to the 65-foot clearance fixed-span bridge.

BRADENTON – The new bridge to the Island will have input from a team of on- and off-Island residents as to what it will look like.

The AMI Bridge Aesthetics Committee will meet once a month to discuss facets of the design and make recommendations to the engineers and designers assigned to the job, but at last month’s meeting, they were asked to decide an overriding theme. Designers gave three examples and asked the Island representatives to gather opinions from residents and elected officials, not-

the theme might guide them on their choices of other aspects of the design as the process progresses.

The themes

The first choice is nautical/rustic, and the example has a picture of the bell tower at the Bridge Street

Pier. There is also a lighthouse and a sand sculpture of an egret and a simple white bench. It would likely appeal to those who enjoy the simple charm of living by the shore.

The second theme is the beach getaway, and it includes sand dollars, a sea bird photo, a picture of shore animals and a black wrought iron bench and it might appeal to the beach visitors who would use the bridge to get there.

The final example is Old Florida charm, and it include colorful chairs under palm trees, a wood bench and a sea turtle artwork.

It might appeal to visitors who do more than visit the beach when they are on the Island.

The committee will talk about the themes at its next meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 24 and will likely make a decision then or at the September meeting.

HOLMES BEACH – One school bus arrived early, and another arrived late, but that didn’t stop teachers and staff from getting the children into their classrooms for the first day of the 2016-17 school year at Anna Maria Elementary School.

An ambulance was parked on the side of Gulf Drive north of the school, its emergency lights flashing to remind drivers that school was open and that they needed to exercise caution.

Holmes Beach Police Officer and AME crossing guard Rob Velardi was on duty at the roadside. He’ll also administer the DARE anti-substance abuse class to the fifth graders, although officer Josh Fleischer will be training to take over later in the year when Velardi retires.

In the auditorium, kindergartners were running up and down the stage runway making a commotion. Kindergarten teacher Kelly Crawford stepped forward and sat them down, leading then in songs, clapping their hands and stomping their feet, to settle down the rambunctious youngsters.

There were other kids in the auditorium spending their last moments with their parents before heading to

their classrooms. Beth Croke and her son, Joey, sat quietly.

When asked if he was ready to start school, Joey said yes but it was plain he was unsure.

The family had just moved to Cortez, but Beth Croke said they were aware of the high quality of education at the school. Mom and son had one final kiss before Joey left in a line of young students marching towards their first day of public education.

As the doors to the classrooms closed, teachers began getting their students into the right seats.

Medical marijuana issue addressed

ANNA MARIA – The mayor and city commission have taken the first steps toward preventing medical marijuana dispensaries and grow houses from setting up shop in the city of Anna Maria.

These preliminary actions were discussed at the Thursday, Aug. 11, commission meeting. They were driven by the possibility that medical marijuana could be legalized by Florida voters in November.

Enacting an ordinance before the elections take place would provide the city with the authority to ban these types of commercial activities.

The proposed legislation, Ordinance 16-820, was presented by attorney Wade Vose, who was filling in for his law partner and mother, City Attorney Becky Vose.

If adopted, the ordinance would prohibit the growing, cultivation, processing and sale of marijuana. The commission was in agreement that these were desired actions. The proposed ordinance would not pertain to a strain of lower potency marijuana called Charlotte’s Web that can now be legally prescribed in Florida, and is commonly used to treat children prone to seizures.

The proposed ordinance also contained language that called for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and/or the possession of marijuana paraphernalia to be reduced to a simple civil offense.

This would result in a citation that carried a $250 fine for the first violation and $500 fines for subsequent violations, but no criminal charges. Commission Chair Doug Copeland said the intent of this provision was prevent someone with a legitimate prescription for medicinal marijuana from getting arrested for possession.

Sgt. Russell Schnering, the city’s top law enforcement officer, questioned this provision and said it could lead to an increase in marijuana use. He said he prefers the current law that allows a fine of $500 for a second degree misdemeanor possession offense and a $1,000 fine for a first degree possession offense.

He expressed concerns that lower fines and removing the threat of prosecution might lead to city getting promoted in a manner that suggested a “come to Anna Maria and get high and you might risk a $250 fine,” mentality.

CORTEZ – After a decade of trying to get Iris LeMasters to sell a vacant half acre in the interior of the FISH Preserve, the Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage has reached an agreement to buy the property for $185,000.

With the purchase, the not-for-profit organization will own nearly 100 acres of contiguous property on a mangrovefringed portion of Sarasota Bay, serving as a buffer between the historic fishing village of Cortez and development to the east.

The property, at 4435 114th St. W., was not on the market, but FISH board member Karen Bell, of A.P. Bell Fish Co. in Cortez, negotiated the deal, offering half the price in cash and half financed, FISH board member Linda Molto said.

The price is a sharp drop from the $1.2 million asking price 11 years ago.

She worked for the chamber of commerce in Cleveland, Ohio, for 12 years before moving to New Hampshire to run a bed and breakfast. She moved to Florida in 2010 to care for her mother after her father passed away.

Some know her from her three and a half years a permitting clerk in Homes Beach and others from her work with the AMI Kiwanis Club, of which she is president.

She has a master’s of education in curriculum and instruction from USF, and holds teaching licenses in K-6 general education, K-12 exceptional student education and K-12 English language learners.

She has nine years of teaching experience in the Manatee County School District and was nationally recognized for her achievements as an educator.

She will be in charge of the after school program, Beyond the Classroom, which will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. weekdays. “Kids will participate in extracurricular and learning activities, such as environmental science and character building programs,� she said.

The teen program, Adventure Time for Teens, also will be under her direction. The program will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. weekdays. “They will do homework and hang out in the new teen room,� Moss said.

Getting on top of trash in Holmes Beach Volunteers are needed to help man the city’s tent on the beach to collect trash on Labor Day.

HOLMES BEACH – Responding to complaints about beaches being littered with trash after major holidays, city officials are planning a special event for the Labor Day weekend.

“On Memorial Day and July 4, our beaches were trashed,” Code Enforcement Officer James Thomas explained.

“The chief (Police Chief Bill Tokajer) came to me and said we need to be proactive and not just react the day after.

“We need to educate people while they are on the beach and encourage them to take their trash with them. Our slogan will be ‘Enjoy Labor Day and don’t forget to take you trash away.’”

The city will partner with Waste Pro, which will provide a tent and bottles of water, and Keep Manatee Beautiful, which will provide trash bags and prizes.

The tent will be set up at the 52nd Street beach from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 5.

At the tent, volunteers will hand out water and trash bags. Those who bring bags of trash to the tent will receive prizes. Carts for plastic and cans also will be available under the tent.

“We are having special T-shirts made for the volunteers, and our goal is to have 10 volunteers in the tent.” Thomas said. “We are hoping that by being visible, it might deter people from leaving their trash on the beach.”

Thomas said if the event is successful, the city would consider expanding to other holidays. And he had a special message for those who like to send the city photos of trashed beaches after holidays: “Come on out and volunteer.”

arasota Bay Watch held its Ninth Annual Scallop Search at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron on Saturday Aug. 13. The event, which continues to grow in popularity, included over 120 volunteers and 60 boats that combed the waters of Sarasota from Big Pass to Longboat Pass.

Before they headed out, searchers were addressed by Sarasota Bay Watch President Larry Stults on how to identify scallops and the method used to locate them. Stults also made the participants aware of the many projects that Sarasota Bay Watch is involved in including the upcoming Scallopalooza Fund Raiser at the Sarasota Yacht Club.

Unfortunately, the water was cloudy over most of the search area, the result of heavy rains in the past two weeks. There also was a red tide event this past summer that might have negatively affected the scallops. Although there were few

The live scallops that were found made it clear that despite the negative conditions, scallops continue to inhabit bay waters. This past year, Sarasota Bay Watch and partners at Mote Marine and Sarasota County have changed their

tactics in scallop releases. Instead of releasing tiny juvenile spat, larger more fully developed juvenile scallops are being cultured and released.

There also is a program being implemented by Sarasota County, Sarasota Bay Watch and Mote Marine that places adult scallops in cages to protect them from predators. The cages also keep

scallops close together where it is hoped their spawning will be more productive.

Searchers also found many recently deceased scallops. The dead ones were large and clean with few barnacles and algae on them. This suggested that the scallops had been active recently. While the scallops may have been killed by predators it could also have been the result of recent spawning, the influx of fresh water to the bay or the impact of red tide. To make an expert determination of cause, volunteers were encouraged to collect the shells so that they could be examined by local experts.

Volunteers searched 45 transects.

The crafts included boats, kayaks and Sarasota High School’s Carefree Learner. This was a community event with many students enjoying the search while acquiring community service hours for their efforts.

After the search, the volunteers returned to the Sailing Squadron where they were treated to lunch by board member Steve Martin. Sarasota Bay Watch and the community owe a special thanks to the Sailing Squadron and Martin for supporting the Scallop Search!

Fly fishing in Montana Captain Rick Grassett

I hosted a group of friends and clients on a destination fly fishing trip at Crane Meadow Lodge (www.cranemeadow. addr.com) in Twin Bridges, Mont., last week. This is an annual trip for me and was my 15th year at the lodge. We fished the Beaverhead and Madison rivers and a couple of creeks and lakes in southwest Montana where we caught and released numerous brown, rainbow, brook and cutthroat trout during the week.

We fished streamers, nymphs and dry flies on 3- through 6-weight fly tackle.

The dry fly action was with a variety of grasshopper patterns, sometimes with a nymph dropper, callibeatis and a few other bugs.

Tim Siegel, from Indiana, Nick Reding and his son, Nick, from St. Louis, Mo., Chad Wandler from Washington, D.C., Lynn Skipper, from Apollo Beach, Fla., and I met up in Bozeman on Sunday afternoon, 8/7 and made the 90-mile drive to the lodge in Twin Bridges. Mike Perez, from Indiana, met up with us at the lodge after fishing a few days before the rest of the group arrived.

Nick Reding, son Nick and Chad Wandler waded every day with several different guides and had some good action. They had a couple of good days on the Madison with some nice brown

guide Dave King and also had good dry fly action with big rainbows. Mike and Tim Siegel also fished a few days with guide Dave King on various stretches of the Beaverhead and caught some quality browns and also had good action with cutthroats on dry flies in an alpine lake.

Tim Siegel and I fished a small creek with guide Matt one day and had good action with brookies on dry flies.

Back in Sarasota, catch and release snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges and trout, blues and more on deep grass flats should be good options.

There should still be some tarpon in the coastal Gulf, in upper Charlotte Harbor and areas of Sarasota and Tampa Bay. Juvenile tarpon in canals and creeks or around bridges are also good options. capt. rick grassett | submitted

Lynn Skipper and I fished the Madison one day and a high altitude lake another day with guide Dan Allen. We caught and released a few browns on the Madison and had good action with cutthroats on dry flies on the lake. We fished the

Beaverhead, where Lynn caught and released a big brown on a nymph, and a lake where we had good action with big rainbows on callibeatis dry flies with guide Tom Caffrey. Lynn also fished a couple of days on the Beaverhead with guide Dan Allen and caught and released browns to 21-inch on a variety of flies.

Captain Sam Kimball is catching red grouper along with lane and mangrove snapper on his full-day outings. His half-day outings are producing grunts, porgies and mangrove snapper.

Captain Scott Moore says redfish are at the mouth of the river. Snapper are around the artificial reefs. Spanish mackerel are in the passes and around the Skyway, and trout are scattered in the deeper waters.

Teamwork is taught at The Center

Starting the first week of school last week, the seven players rostered on each team in the five-to nine-year old youth basketball league found themselves matching up on the basketball court in the first games of the season at the Island’s community center Thursday night. Playing 5v5, each of the players got their time on the court to not only show their skills, but also learn more about the game with the help of the referees and coaches.

Big man Grayson Mitchell, for Team Harry’s Grill, faced Salty Printing’s Kieran Cloutier in the jump ball to start the first game of the season. Quick to start the scoring action, Mitchell scored the first points in the game after effective passing by his teammates.

Ewan Cloutier displayed mad dribbling skills proving the Cloutier brother duo to be a force to be reckoned with on the court. K. Cloutier’s first shot, just short of the goal, was rebounded by Fiona McCarthy.

After stealing the pass from McCarthy, Anthony Nguyen, Harry’s Grill top scorer, performed a textbook layup to advance the score to 4-0.

Salty Printing’s point guard Mason Moss dribbled past half court to E. Cloutier. K. Cloutier took the shot under the basket, putting two points on the scoreboard for his team.

With back and forth action on the court, the ball found the hands of Harrison Schenerlein, who made his first shot attempt of the game, which just missed the rim.

The 24-minute game gave the veteran referees the chance to teach the young players about the rules of the game, including the “Over and Back Rule.” The referees that officiate the games at The Center have been a consistent for over a decade. These individuals have watched the Island area kids play and grow before their eyes. Knowing the players’ skill levels, the referees are able to guide each player to becoming stronger players on the court.

Nguyen rebounded the shot by Kenny Neiring for another basket, taking the score to 6-2. Schenerlein stole the ball from Neiring after his shot came off the rim to end the first period of play.

Rebound after rebound gave Nguyen another scoring opportunity. After taking advantage, he sank two baskets with an assist by Neiring. Neiring found his own scoring change, pushing Harry’s Grill’s lead to 12-2.

During the halftime break, coaches could be heard encouraging players to involve all of the players using their passing skills and communicating on the court. Coaches stressed to the strong older players their important roles on the team to teach and support the younger, less experienced players.

Harry’s Grill played well as a team with the help of Colin Bankert on the court and missed the support of Alex Cox. With 12 minutes left in the game, Team Harry’s Grill started on offense. Mitchell got his own rebound and made the basket under the net, spreading his team’s lead by 12 points.

Team Salty Printing displayed great passing during the game, including effective bounce passes by F. McCarthy. Jack McCarthy worked the basketball for his team, fighting during the entire second half to close the point gap.

After being called for a five second violation on Mitchell, Schenerlein made another shot attempt that fell just of the basket.

In a teachable moment, E. Cloutier was called for a double dribble losing possession of the ball for Salty Printing. Taking advantage, Mitchell found himself in

scoring position. The ball hit the rim on the outside shot.

Showing his defensive strength, E. Cloutier stole the ball before it could get to Nguyen. E. Cloutier added another basket to the Salty Printing statistics, moving the score to 14-4 in the third period of play.

Neiring answered back with a clean out side shot that was all net for Harry’s Grill.

With less than 30 seconds left in the period, Schenerlein put up two more points for Salty printing.

The scoreboard displayed a 16-6 game with six minutes left in the first matchup of the season. In just the three periods of play, spectators could already see the players coming together as a team and the players improving on the court.

K. Cloutier was called for a shooting foul, taking Neiring to the free throw line. After missing the first shot, one of the referees took the opportunity to give Neiring a few shooting pointers. The second shot was to the right of the basket, but the shot showed the player applying the instruction of the referee.

E. Cloutier was fouled, taking him to the

free throw line. Making the first shot, the scoreboard displayed the 16-7 score. Moss rebounded the second free throw shot only to have the ball blocked by Nguyen.

Neiring took the ball down the court to score another basket for Harry’s Grill.

With no full court press in the youth league, Moss took the ball to midcourt. The tough defense of Harry’s Grill took possession of the ball with less than two minutes left in the game.

Nguyen threw up another layup giving his team a 13-point lead.

McCarthy was defensively glued to Mitchell, never giving Harry’s Grill the opportunity to pass to him.

In the last seconds of the game, Nguyen scored the final basket of the game taking the score to 22-7.

Obituaries Ruth Louise Starke Burkhead Ruth Burkhead was a long time resident of Arcadia, Mich., Evanston, Ill., Holmes Beach, Fla., and Marine on St. Croix, Minn. Since July 2015, she was been lovingly cared for at Colby’s Orchard House, Frankfort, Mich. She always had a smile and the room was always brighter with her presence. She will be remembered in our hearts.

Ruth graduated from Arcadia High School in a town founded by her great grandfather. She was a graduate of Michigan State University ‘38, where she was named to Mortar Board and Tower Guard academic societies and in her graduating year crowned queen. She moved to the east coast to attend Johns Hopkins and complete her dietetics degree. Upon graduation, she worked at Monmouth Memorial Hospital in Long Branch, N. J., where she met Howard, a family practice doctor. Married in 1943, they lived happily and raised family in Long Branch, N.J. and Evanston, Ill. In retirement they enjoyed both Arcadia, Mich., and Holmes Beach, Fla. While raising a family in Evanston, Ill, Ruth was active in local education, library and church organizations. She was president of the Evanston PTA, board member of the Evanston Public Library and representative to the Presbytery and to Mission Council and General Council of Presbyterian Church. Her vanguard belief in recycling led to creation of the first of many future annual used book sales in Evanston and Arcadia.

Ruth and Howard loved to host international students attending nearby Northwestern University and caught the travel bug. They traveled extensively including India, Sweden, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Panama, Bahamas and Japan, and they even climbed the Great Wall of China.

In retirement, Ruth founded the Arcadia Historical Society and was a volunteer at the Artist Guild of Anna Maria Island (AGAMI), Island Players Theatre and the Island Branch Library. She was a member of the Roser Memorial Community Church.

Her joys included painting and corresponding with her many friends around the world. When not volunteering, she could be found reading in the library.

Those left to treasure her memory are son, Curtis Burkhead, and his wife, Marcy, of Florida; daughters, Judith Weiner, of Michigan, and Nancy Hauschild, of Minnesota; and son, Bob Burkhead, and his wife,

Gloria, of Hawaii. In addition, Ruth is survived by six grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Davita Burkhead-Weiner, of Michigan; John B. Hauschild, his wife, Rachel, and sons, Henry and Samuel, of Minnesota; James Hauschild and his wife, Katherine, of Minnesota; Shannon Burkhead, California; Matt Burkhead, of Arizona; and Jake Burkhead, of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Starke and Anna Leuker Starke; her husband of 55 years, Howard; her brother, Henry “Hank” Starke, and two sons-in-laws, John Hauschild and Harold Weiner.

Family members celebrated her life in a memorial service at Pilgrim Home Cemetary, Arcadia, Mich.

Robert U. 'Bob' Nash Robert Usborn “Bob” Nash, died July 8, 2016, at the age of 85.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret “Peggy” Menges Nash; his sister, Patricia Couchenour and her husband, Jim; sister-in-law, Betty; four sons, Ken, (Linda), Clark (Paula), Cliff, and Brian (Martha); grandchildren, Moorgun, Gretchen, Lacey, Chelsea, and Tyler; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Samantha, Tiffany, Brandon, Sebastian, Stella and Eva; several cousins, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his older brother, Terry William Nash, and his parents, Leonard William Nash and Elizabeth Watkins Nash.

Bob was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Salem, Ohio. He attended elementary and middle schools in Damascus, Ohio, graduated from high school at Culver Military Academy in Indiana and attended Youngstown University, Youngstown, Ohio. Immediately following his marriage to Peggy on Jan. 24, 1949, he went to work with his father and brother at L.W. Nash Company in East Palestine, Ohio, a firm that designed and manufactured machinery for the metals industry.

The company was purchased by Alcoa and later was moved to North Carolina. Bob retired as executive vice president after fulfilling his contract with Alcoa, and moved to Anna Maria, Fla., in June of 1977.

Bob worked for the Islander newspaper, H&R Block, with Peggy in real estate, volunteered at Mote Marine Lab and supported many outdoor conservation organizations and activities. Bob received the Bradenton Herald’s Crosthwaite Award as Manatee County Outdoorsman of the Year, 1989, in part as a result of his efforts to have tarpon tagged, not killed, a common practice in tournaments at that time.

When he no longer had a desire to fish for tarpon, he donated his tarpon boat to Mote to be used in manatee research. He was very fond of ice cream and birds, but not particularly fond of cats. He was a fan of all sports, especially Manatee High School Hurricanes football and the Tampa Bay Rays. He enjoyed the theater, concerts, traveling to preserves, state and national parks and most of all fly-fishing for smallmouth bass in Canada and fishing for crappie and blue gill in Lake Manatee.

Bob was an active member of Roser Community Church. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Roser Church, 512 Pine Avenue, Anna Maria, on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be sent to Roser Church, P.O. Box 247, Anna Maria, FL 34216.

The officer saw a driver speed on Gulf Drive and had another officer pull him over. When he met the driver, he observed the driver’s eyes were glassy and he slurred when he spoke. He officer asked if he had any health issues and he said no. The suspect said he used to have an opiate addiction, but had not taken any in two years. The officer inspected the vehicle and found medications in the car with no prescriptions. He arrested the driver.

KALETA: Hearing set FROM PAGE 4

called back and said he had no idea he had been in an accident. He was asked to return to the scene of the accident, but he said he could not without recharging his Tesla.

The highway patrol officer called Holmes Beach Police to send a car to Kaleta’s house.

Two officers arrived and observed Kaleta’s damaged car in the driveway. Kaleta told the officers he was driving with his children, and they started screaming because traffic ahead had stopped.

He said he slammed on his brakes and thought he had not hit the car in front of him.

After talking with police, Kaleta was advised he was being placed under arrest and taken to jail.

After earning a degree in business administration from USF, he became a corporate trainer for Carrabba’s restaurant and Outback Steak House. He then owned three of his own restaurants in Bradenton, but sold them to go into property management and real estate before joining The Center a year ago.

He has coached at The Center for six years and has three children, Mikaela, 10; Marley, 9; and Maddox, 7.

Visualize your décor T

o some people, redecorating is an endurance test, to others a passion and for most of us, in the middle. It’s an eventual necessity particularly if you’re thinking of selling your home. And like all things digital in this century, your home decorating and design can be done on line with the help of a virtual decorator.

I’ve written before about many of the major paint manufacturers providing on line color visualizers on their websites.

Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams and Glidden among others have areas on their websites providing sample rooms that can be "repainted" with any of the colors they have available. You can also upload a picture of your room and try out different color schemes. It’s a productive and fun way to get comfortable with different colors without testing it on a wall and committing to an expensive gallon of paint and it doesn’t cost a penny.

Castles in the Sand Louise Bolger Now the digital world has gone a step further, except this time you’ll have to pay for it.

Digital decorating services have sprung up in the last several years, offering services ranging from base line recommendations to full blown renovations. Starting at around $200, you are provided with a minimum number of decorating schemes based on particular information provided. The fee charged is based on the experience of the designer you opt to work with and the amount of service required, like a 3-D room rendering.

All of the companies work pretty much the same in that you provide photos of the room you would like to redesign, provide a

layout and outline particular problems you may be having. Most of them ask you to pick a look that best fits your taste from options provided, point out existing pieces of furniture or features you want to retain and provide a budget. Then like magic you’ll receive renderings and an approximate cost to achieve the new design. The time frame, as well as the number of changes allowed, are all part of the initial cost that you have contracted for.

Sounds like fun right? This is right up my alley. You can get some really good advice for not much money and then go ahead and make your own decisions. It’s especially fun for busy people who don’t have the time or disposition to spend touring furniture showrooms, antique shops and flea markets looking for something, but not really knowing what that something is. The virtual designer at least gives you a place to start before walking your little tootsies off on your first free day off.

This is not, however, for the digitally challenged or those who have the time and money to sit and have their hand held by a designer who will certainly guide you to their best wholesalers. This is for the do it yourselfer who just needs a little out of the box creative advice to get their juices moving.

Palma Sola Scenic Highway to get more plants The plants will protect the shoreline where vehicles are parking and causing erosion.

BRADENTON – The Palma Sola Scenic Highway committee has received a $3,000 grant from the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program for plants and bollards in areas where erosion and damage has been occurring due to people parking vehicles.

In 2014, Ingrid McClellan, executive director of Keep Manatee Beautiful, alerted members to the problem of people parking on the north and south sides of the east end of the Anna Maria Island Bridge and causing the shoreline to erode.

McClellan also said people park along the sides of the Causeway by the Perico Island Bridge and damage trees planted by the committee, as well as the shoreline and mangroves.

At last week’s meeting, she introduced landscape designs by Sweet Bay Nursery for three of the areas by the bridges, and said planting would take place in September. She has applied

for a $5,000 grant from the Tama Bay Estuary Program for the fourth area.

Member Shawn Deytschavar reported on missing bollards and rope on the Causeway. He said there are 38 bollards and 350 feet of rope missing. McClellan said she hopes to have some money from the grants to pay for replacing those.

AMI Bridge

Ryan Forrestel, of American Consulting Professionals, gave members an overview of the Anna Maria Island Bridge project and said, “We are very early in the design project.”

He said the length of the bridge at 3,150, feet would be nearly the same as the current bridge at 3050 feet, and the clearance under the bridge would be 65 feet. There will be one lane in each direction, as well as 10-foot shoulders and 10-foot sidewalk/bike lane on both sides.

The construction estimate is $76 million, and the final phase is planned for early 2019. However, he said the bridge is not yet funded.

He said the bridge aesthetics committee would make decisions on features

that influence design such as pier shapes and scenic overlooks, treatments such as lighting and railings and landscape/hardscape such as plant types and signage. The committee is considering three themes – nautical/ rustic, beach getaway and Old Florida charm.

Member Ken Crayton asked about traffic during construction. Forrestel said the bridge would be built parallel and to the south of the current bridge.

“We will maintain two lanes as we do today with access to everything,” Forrestel explained. “Once the new bridge is in use, we’ll take out the old bridge.”

Crayton asked if it would impact Neal Preserve, and Forrestel said no because the road would be back on its original alignment at that point.

Mark Alderson, director of the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, asked about mitigation of seagrasses, and Forrestel said that would occur.

Palma Sola Boulevard

McClellan introduced a draft letter to Manatee County Commissioners asking that Palma Sola Boulevard be designated as a sharrow road for both

drivers and cyclists to share.

She said the sharrow lane would make drivers aware “that the bicycles are on the roads and create a better relationship with the bicyclists and the motorists as far as sharing the road and being safe.”

In August 2014, Manatee County Commissioner John Chappie first advocated making the road the county’s first local scenic road.

Member Jerry West asked what the road has to do with the scenic highway, and McClellan said it connects the scenic highway to the Ungarelli and FISH preserves.

Darryl Richard, of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), suggested that the proposal needed review by a technical and safety expert.

McClellan said she could work with county staff.

Crayton asked if the community had been consulted about the proposal and said, “People who live there may want to put some restrictions on it.”

Partnerships created to drive tourism

HOLMES BEACH – A LEGO Snooty and an exchange of shirts between tourism directors for the Bradenton Area and Visit Tampa Bay were among the tourism partnerships announced at Monday’s Manatee County Tourist Development Council meeting.

The Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has a synergy with Visit Tampa Bay, much like the successful tourism partnership among San Diego, Las Vegas and Phoenix, said Director Elliott Falcione, who wore a Visit Tampa Bay shirt to the meeting.

“We leverage each other very, very well,” he said, adding that since visitors stay in the Bradenton Area 5.3 days on average, longer than the state average of 4.1 days, there is time for them to visit Tampa.

The partnership is good for Tampa because “We don’t have a beach,” said Santiago Corrada, of Visit Tampa Bay, sporting a Bradenton Area shirt, and touting Tampa’s urban attractions, including sports, The Florida Aquarium and Busch Gardens.

Both marketing organizations use the

same international representative in Central Europe, he said, adding, “We’re complimentary destinations.”

Another partnership, between the Bradenton Area and LEGOLAND in Winter Haven, is personified in LEGO Snooty, a LEGO version of Manatee County’s marine mammal mascot, who lives at the Parker Aquarium in Bradenton.

People who visit LEGOLAND in Winter Haven, two hours from Bradenton, are similar to those who visit the Bradenton Area, said Brittany Williams, of LEGOLAND. “Our feeder markets align with yours,” she said, including Canada and the United Kingdom.

The LEGOLAND lakefront beach retreat, set to open next year, will compliment Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key’s beaches, she said; tourists can come to LEGOLAND for a day or two of fun, then head to the Bradenton Area to relax and unwind.

The partnership will stretch advertising dollars for both, Falcione said.

Other partnerships in the works are with the Sarasota Sports Commission and with IMG Academy, said Sean Walter, CVB sports marketing director.

Tourism rising

The Bradenton Area fared “extremely well” from April through June this year, with July and August “surprisingly strong,” considering economic challenges and terrorist turbulence in feeder markets, said Walter Klages, Manatee County’s tourism consultant, adding that Europeans consider the destination safe.

The presence of the mosquito-borne Zika virus in Florida, with two travelrelated cases in Manatee County, has not yet caused any cancellations of European trips, he said.

The number of visitors in the quarter from April through June was up 5.4 percent to 166,900, with an economic impact of more than $193 million, he said. The top five feeder markets for the quarter were Tampa/St. Petersburg, Orlando, Chicago, New York and Boston.

Occupancy was up 1.1 percent over the same quarter last year, reaching 75.4 percent, while average daily room rates were up 3.2 percent at $172 a night.

With tourism continuing to rise in the formerly slow summer months, “We are at that place where we have to be very careful to protect what we have,” TDC Chair Carol Whitmore said, recounting “bumper

to bumper” traffic backups on Saturday mornings at Anna Maria Island accommodations’ check out times.

“We need to protect why they’re coming here,” she said, suggesting an advertising reduction.

The CVB is “off the pedal” in its marketing, but the industry cannot afford to lose ground or average daily room rates could fall, Falcione said, adding that he plans to make an announcement this week about a new tourism advertising campaign, “Build your own vacation.”

LONGBOAT PASS – They came to party, and they left without a fuss.

A crowd of boaters anchored near Jewfish Key last Saturday morning close to Longboat Pass to attend AquaPalooza, sponsored by MarineMax. It was billed as a party on the water featuring music, supplied mainly by the boaters.

There was some trepidation on the part of Longboat Key officials and residents who were surprised to learn of the event, which was advertised on social media. One Jewfish Key resident reminded officials that the key is private property, and crowds would not be welcome. The

According to police, it was a quiet event. There were no reports of problems by Longboat Key police, Bradenton Beach police or Manatee County Marine Rescue.

Other agencies patrolling the event included Florida Wildlife Commission, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and Holmes Beach police.

Scenic highway extension

In 2010, the group submitted an application to the state seeking to have the scenic highway extended into Holmes Beach. Currently the highway begins at 75th Street West in Bradenton and ends at East Bay Drive in Holmes Beach.

The extension would include Manatee Avenue from East Bay Drive to the Manatee County Public Beach, East Bay and Gulf drives from Manatee Avenue to the city limits of Bradenton Beach and Old Gulf Drive from Manatee Avenue to East Bay Drive.

However, in 2011, the FDOT sent back the group’s application stating that

it needs improvement in making the case for the extension and why it merits designation.

Bob Finck, the consulting project manager for the Florida Scenic Highway program, told members that the program’s policies have changed and he hoped to help them revive the application.

He said while the Holmes Beach City Commission originally approved the application, members should get confirmation of that approval. Holmes Beach Building Official Jim McGuinness said he would like to see a map of the extension.

They also predict between five and eight hurricanes, including Alex, and two to four major hurricanes.

To date, there have been five named storms with two of them hurricanes.

The reasoning behind the hike in storm production has to do with conditions within the main development region (MDR), consisting of the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic Ocean.

During the season, the conditions for

storm development increase in the Atlantic, where upper atmospheric winds fueled by El Nino winds in the Pacific Ocean tend to make conditions unstable for the development of storms coming off Africa and crossing the Atlantic Ocean. They can also affect the development of storms in the Caribbean.

The problem this year is El Nino is gone, and La Nina conditions are expected to take over, taking away the unstable conditions in the MDR. According to the NOAA prediction,

there is considerable uncertainty about when La Nina will develop and how strong it will become.

The report says, “The main competing factors this season are 1) anomalous sinking motion and increased vertical wind shear in the western MDR (which are somewhat related to the active eastern Pacific hurricane season), and 2) less conducive global sea surface temperature patterns.

"Losing El Nino could tip the scales toward a busier Atlantic-fed season.”

However, model predictions now

call for only a “borderline weak La Nina” to form between now and October.

So Far, storms Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle and Earl have formed with Alex and Earl turning into Hurricanes. Four storms have made landfall, including Bonnie in South Carolina, Connie in western Florida, Danielle in eastern Mexico, and Earl in Belize and Mexico.

The word is, stay prepared because these predictions don’t tell where future storms will go.

DRUGS: A growing concern FROM PAGE 5

He encourages anyone who encounters a child, teenager or adult that appears to be passed out to call 911 immediately.

“It could be a heroin overdose,” he said.

Those who experience or report an overdose will not be arrested.

“There’s a statute that protects people reporting overdoses. We don’t make an arrest; it’s all about saving lives. If a drug user right next to them makes the phone call, they don’t get arrested.”

In closing, Schnering said, “It’s a growing epidemic. It’s not going away.”

Island occurrences

On Saturday Aug. 6, police officers from Bradenton Beach and Holmes Beach responded to a call about two unresponsive females lying in the parking lot of a Holmes Beach bar.

Upon arrival, both females had a pulse but were sweating profusely and unresponsive. EMS administered at least two doses of Narcan. After several minutes, both victims regained consciousness and were transported to Blake Medical Center,” the Holmes Beach police report states.

Both women were in their early to mid-30s.

When asked about the presence of heroin, Holmes Beach Police Chief

Bill Tokajer said, “We’ve had two overdoses to my knowledge and we had one arrest involved with heroin in April. That doesn’t mean it’s not here. We know that what happens on the mainland eventually happens on the Island, and that’s evident from the past weekend. We are cognizant of the problem and working with agencies in the county to combat it.”

On Saturday, July 30, the Bradenton Beach Police Department and county EMS responded to an

overdose at a residence on Church Avenue involving a 31-year-old man from out of town who was visiting a family member.

According to the police report, he was lying on the floor unconscious, not breathing, turning blue and showing little in the way of vital signs. Using Narcan, EMS personnel were able to revive the man and transport him to the hospital.

Det. Sgt. Lenard Diaz said the only previous heroin overdose in Bradenton Beach that he was aware of was a fatal overdose attributed to fentanyl in 2015.

Police Chief Sam Speciale said, “The reality is we’re not safe from everything on this little Island. You can’t be blind to the fact that there is a heroin problem in Manatee County, and the public needs to be aware that we are doing everything we can to keep it from happening out here.”

ANNA MARIA ISLAND – Brad Lisk and William Thomas (not his real name) don’t work in law enforcement but their chosen professions have provided them with their own unique perspectives on the spike in heroin use taking place in Manatee County.

A bartender’s view

Lisk, a former Island resident, has spent the past six years working as a bartender at a Holmes Beach bar that has not had a heroin overdose.

He previously spent 13 years coaching baseball to Island

youngsters and six years coaching football and soccer.

“As a bartender, I’m seeing them as adults. When I see a kid I know and coached and they’re on this stuff, I pull them aside and tell them to look in the mirror and wake up. I grab one of their friends and say get them out of here,” he said.

Lisk said he knows several people with ties to the Island who have overdosed and at least five who died.

“I’ve got a baseball picture with 12 kids in it, and three of them are dead,” he said.

Lisk said heroin has become more popular with those who

work in bars and restaurants.

“It’s thick in that industry. A lot of these kids are not overdosing on the Island, so it’s not an incident that occurred on the Island, but the kids are from the Island, work on the Island and hang out on the Island. The official numbers won’t show it, but there’s a connection,” he said.

“It’s not some poor kid sitting in an alley shooting up.

These are kids from families on the Island, and they’re falling victim to it just like everyone else. It’s a classless beast,” he added.

Lisk encourages users to reach out to friends and family

members.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” he said.

A nurse’s view

Thomas, an Island resident, works as an emergency room nurse in Pinellas County. He said he sees an average of two heroin overdoses on a weekend night and about half of that on weeknights.

He said he is seeing more young women overdosing than ever before, which to him signals a growing acceptance of the drug in social circles that would have once been immune to such concerns.

He said a heroin overdose drops a person’s respiration

rate to nearly zero, and in some cases, they’re not breathing at all. He said EMS has about 20 minutes to revive an overdose victim before he/she is dead.

When asked about the heroin overdose antidote Narcan now being sold as an over the counter drug, Thomas said, “Drug users think they can do a little more because they have some Narcan. It’s a catch-22.”

Given that less than perfect scenario, he added, “The injectable (Narcan)works much better; that’s what I would give you. I’d be leery about using an inhaler on someone who’s barely breathing.”
