The popular pier and restaurant unveils renovations that capture all of the structure’s old Island charm.

ANNA MARIA – Without fanfare, the Rod and Reel restaurant opened its doors to the public on Friday, Feb. 7, for the first time since a fire damaged it four months ago.

The fire, which started near the stove, produced thick smoke, but few flames, as it burned inside the walls, but the damage was just part of the reason it took so long to get it back into shape.

Agreement to finish renourishment before county The pact was hammered out during talks Monday that went late into the night.

BRADENTON BEACH – The Manatee County Board of County Commissioners was to vote Tuesday on a new agreement to have renourishment contractor Great Lakes Dredge and Dock continue covering our shores with new sand in Cortez and Coquina beaches to the tune of $5.75 million.

The agreement was announced at the meeting by County Administrator Ed Hunzeker.

Manatee County Natural Resources Director Charlie Hunsicker was scheduled to present the agreement to the county commission later in the meeting. If approved, the agreement would have

Crime down in Anna Maria Total crime in the city of Anna Maria is down 36 percent, according to statistics from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

ANNA MARIA – Mayor SueLynn is happy about the latest crime statistics for her city but the man charged with leading law enforcement in the city is not satisfied.

Sgt. Paul Davis said this is a good first year for him. There were 87 crimes reported in 2012 and 56 in 2013. Rape went from two incidents to zero, there were no robberies in both years, aggravated assaults went from four to zero, non residential burglaries stayed the same at three, residential burglaries went from 16 to 10, vehicle burglary went from 20 to six, larceny from 39 to 36 and motor vehicle thefts from three to one.

“If it makes your inner alarm go

off, give us a call,” Davis said. “Let us figure out if it is suspicious.”

Davis said he was happy to see calls for service increase and crime drop. He said the drop is directly attributable to the increase in calls.

“If we get a call and contact a suspicious looking individual who might be planning a crime, the odds are good that that person will leave before committing a crime,” he said.

Davis commended his staff.

“They are a dynamic group of deputies who are always looking for better ways to protect the community,” he said. “Every deputy has a bike now, and they use them a lot.”

Davis said the Sheriff ’s Office also purchased a Kawasaki Mule, a four-wheel-drive all terrain vehicle that can be used on the beach to check for criminal activity. He said that crime prevention is a community responsibility as well.

“I really like to emphasize community policing,” he said. “We try to talk with people and educate them on ways to prevent crime.”

Davis praised the community and the staff at city hall for their support.

“We’re all working together to keep paradise the way paradise should be,” he said.

State flood bill moves forward The Florida Senate Appropriations Subcommittee voted unanimously last week to move a state flood insurance bill forward after a second review by the Senate Insurance Committee.

Legislators had expressed concern that the bill may cause consumers to choose cheaper flood insurance without fully understanding coverage limitations.

State Senate Bill 542 addresses flood insurance premium increases caused by the federal BiggertWaters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, which phased out premium subsidies in an effort to make the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) financially sound.

The bill would encourage private insurers to offer policies in Florida to compete with the NFIP’s standardized rates, and would allow policyholders more flexibility on both rates and coverage, such as insuring for the amount of a mortgage, with premiums decreasing as mortgages are paid down.

Learn about privateers A lecture on Privateers in Florida will be presented on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. at the Florida Maritime Museum, 4415 119th St. W. in Cortez.

Privateers were not pirates, buccaneers or freebooters, at least not legally. The 30-minute lecture will detail what makes a legalized pirate, the risks and rewards of the trade and privateers who fought both for and against Florida.

Cortez festival this weekend

CORTEZ – Wishin’ you were fishin’? Join 25,000 other fishing fans at the 32nd Annual Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival this weekend from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Seafood stars against the backdrop of the authentic, working historic fishing village, including the famous “Cortez hot dog” – fried mullet in a hot dog bun with cole slaw.

For those who – gasp! – don’t eat seafood, there will be other choices, including something new this year – Mexican food, said Linda Molto, one of the organizers.

Also new are 20 percent of the artists displaying nautical arts and crafts, she said, adding that even the trash bins will look like pieces of art.

An exhibit at the Florida Maritime Museum, "Art from the Archives," will feature works from the off-display collection, and volunteers will be out front decorating Silly Sea Creatures for the kids. More children’s activities, live music, marine life talks and exhibits on commercial fishing round out the festival.

Committee to proceed with agreements Members of the Holmes Beach Island Congestion Committee will meet with officials from three proposed off-site parking areas to work on agreements to allow for overflow parking. The sites are Church of the Annunciation, Regions Bank and the elementary school.

Members agreed that each site would require an agreement tailored to that site’s needs, but the city would offer trash receptacles and pick up, police services, signage and general liability insurance.

FISH festival volunteers needed Volunteers are still needed for the Florida Institute for Saltwater (FISH) sponsored Wishin’ I was Fishin’ Commercial Fishing Festival taking place Saturday, Feb. 15, and Sunday, Feb. 16, in Cortez.

The greater need is for Sunday volunteers, but some Saturday shifts are also available. Available volunteer duties include, but are not limited to, assisting with the beer tent. Those interested are asked to leave a voicemail at the FISH office, 941254-4972.

CVHS at fish fest The Cortez Village Historical Society will have a booth at the Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival featuring its famous strawberry shortcake, T-shirts and books by Cortez authors.

The group recently elected officers Kaye Bell, president, Ellen Bell, vice-president, Linda Molto, secretary and Mary Green, treasurer.

The next meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, March 11, at 4 p.m. in Fisher-

men’s Hall and is open to the public.

Topics will include plans for the Cortez Cultural Center, formerly the Monroe Cottage.

A community pot luck lunch is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, at the Cortez docks.

Steve Marshall, of the School for the Arts in Palmetto, will bring students to perform skits and present an art show at A.P. Bell Fish Co. docks.

BeachHouse joins parking lawsuit Ed Chiles and his partners are now codefendants in 2012 legal action filed against the city of Bradenton Beach.

BRADENTON BEACH – On Thursday, Feb. 6, attorney Robert Lincoln, acting on behalf of ELRA Inc., the restaurant ownership group led by Ed Chiles, filed a motion to intervene in a 2012 lawsuit filed by (now Mayor) Bill Shearon, Tjet Martin and former planning and zoning board member Jo Ann Meilner. The lawsuit pertains to the beachfront lot south of the BeachHouse restaurant and its use for parking.

Lincoln filed the motion to intervene the same day he filed a complaint, on behalf of ELRA, alleging various abuses of power by Shearon.

In 2012, while serving on the planning and zoning board, Shearon, Meilner and two other board members opposed

the parking lot-related major development application submitted by ELRA. City commissioners later discarded the planning board’s recommendation for denial and entered into a joint development agreement that allowed Chiles to make improvements to his property. The agreement also called for the construction of a small cityowned parking lot on the undeveloped lot south of and adjacent to the BeachHouse property.

In objection to this decision, Shearon and Meilner resigned from the planning board.

In November, after being elected mayor, Shearon voluntarily withdrew from the 2012 lawsuit, leaving Martin and Meilner as the remaining plaintiffs.

The case is now awaiting the appointment of a new judge after the previous judge recused herself, at the request of the plaintiffs, because of her connections to the Chiles family.

Restaurant ownership files complaint against mayor Legal document alleges abuses of power by Mayor Bill Shearon.

BRADENTON BEACH – ELRA Inc., the ownership group headed by Ed Chiles that owns the BeachHouse, Sandbar and Mar Vista restaurants, has filed a circuit court complaint against Bradenton Beach Mayor Bill Shearon alleging he threatened and tried to intimidate city employees.

The complaint says Shearon threatened and intimidated employees and contracted city officials, has attempted to install himself as a strong mayor in a weak mayor form of government and has misused his position to direct city officials and staff to take positions adverse to the BeachHouse and its ownership.

It also says Shearon will continue to take actions adverse to the rights granted to ELRA by the city charter and city ordinances, and that doing so

violates the mayor’s powers and duties as stated in the charter.

The complaint cites Shearon’s opposition to recent BeachHouse major development applications, saying the mayor’s actions cost Chiles and his partners $15,000. ELRA is not seeking monetary compensation, but is seeking declaratory and supplemental relief from the mayor interfering with their development requests.

The complaint also goes into detail about Chiles’ efforts to use his property for parking and to make future renovations to his restaurant.

At the Jan. 16 commission meeting, ELRA withdrew a major development application that included plans for a second story, open-air dining pavilion.

When asked about the allegations made against him, Shearon said, “I’m shocked and surprised. In my opinion, the allegations are unfounded.”

So far, the mayor’s comments comprise the extent of any official response from the city. Because City see COMPLAINT, page 10

EDITORIAL Welcome back

A

n old friend is back on the Island after a four-month absence and it's been a pleasure to get reacquainted.

The Rod and Reel Pier in Anna Maria reopened last week after undergoing extensive renovations following damage from a fire in September. The iconic pier and restaurant has been a mainstay for locals and visitors for years, with its funky, old-Island decor and comfortableas-an-old-slipper ambience. The fact that there seemed to be no right angles in the entire structure, and that a pencil placed on any of the tables rolled off onto the floor, only made the place more endearing.

Happily, all of that charm has been retained in the new and improved Rod and Reel, much to the delight of regulars and newcomers alike. The food is even better than before and still reasonably priced, while a reconfiguration of the downstairs bar affords a magnificent view of Tampa Bay. Congratulations to everyone involved in the renovations for a superb job of rebuilding one of the little gems that make the Island such a unique place.

Well done.

Kudos, as well, to the folks over at The Studio at Gulf and Pine in Anna Maria for a fabulous exhibit by renowned nature photographer Clyde Butcher, whose giant black and white photos of Florida landscapes capture the essence of our disappearing wilderness as well as our imaginations. A reception last week gave Islanders a chance to talk with the amiable Butcher and view up close his stunning interpretations of Florida landscapes. If you've never seen his work, or even if you have, treat yourself and head over to The Studio, 10101 Gulf Drive. The exhibit will continue through Feb. 26.

Stop for pedestrians I am directing this message to those visitors to the Island who ignore cross walks. It is the law that if you see someone standing at a cross walk you have to stop. While traveling the Island I noticed people ignoring the law. You can't be in that much of a hurry that you can't stop for pedestrians, which only takes a minute of your time. You are already here in paradise - what is your hurry? Please be considerate. Obey the law.

The pipes are calling

I frequent the 77th Street access in Holmes beach to view the sunset.

Recently, a bagpiper chose this spot to play his bagpipes as the sun sets.

Actually that isn't totally accurate.

He starts playing the bagpipes 20 minutes before the sun sets and stops only when the sun has set. I'm here for three months and the sunsets to me are a special time. One where an individual can reflect, or if one chooses to talk with friends or other sun

set viewers. I live 150 yards from the beach, and I can hear the pipes from my house. To me that is excessive noise, which is clearly prohibited and clearly stated on a sign as you enter the beach access. I really don't know what to do – call the police, walk a half a mile down the beach, talk to the individual and ask for a compromise?

"How about you play only from when the sun hits the water until it sets". I'm not really a good diplomat so I don't know if while talking to him I could avoid a critique of his bagpipe expertise. I would appreciate hearing from others as to what they think. Please Remember I'm here three months this isn't a "one night stand" with a sunset.

ELRA to join the city of Bradenton Beach as co-defendants and is expected to speed up the legal process.

Chiles says he has already spent $150,000 on improvements to his property, including the construction of a dune that serves as a barrier between both lots and the beach.

Because of the 2012 lawsuit, the city never initiated construction of a city parking lot that was supposed to include shared entrance and exit points with the BeachHouse.

According the complaint filed against Shearon, the entire joint agreement project required permitting from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), and that permit is set to expire in April.

If the city fails to complete its portion of the development project or fails to modify the permit to remove the city portion, ELRA could be found in violation of the FDEP permit.

According to the motion to intervene, Chiles has used the south parking area since 1993, and its use for parking dates back to 1989.

The document states that the city

determined that parking for 40 cars was either a permitted use or a nonconforming use grandfathered by the comprehensive plan and zoning code.

The 2012 joint development agreement allowed ELRA to grade and configure 37 parking spaces.

The unresolved Martin-Meilner lawsuit seeks to overturn the major development application that preceded the joint agreement and thus prevent parking in those locations.

The suit contends the preservation land use designation disallows parking on either property.

Meilner says she and Martin are not seeking monetary compensation, but simply trying to prevent parking from taking place on land they feel should remain undeveloped because of its land use designation.

“We want the agreement terminated and no parking on the beach. We don't really mind the dune, because any good storm is going to take it away anyway, but the suit calls for it to be removed,” Meilner said.

Concerns have also been raised about the parking lots’ potential

impact on nesting sea turtles.

In December, Meilner appealed to the newly-configured commission to address the issues concerning the BeachHouse property and the proposed city parking lot.

“I’d like this committee, with three new members, to determine if this agreement violates our city codes.

If they find it does, they should terminate the agreement,” she said at the time.

The commission did not act on her request.

Intervening in the Martin-Meilner lawsuit means Lincoln, in addition to defending Chiles’ right to use his property for parking, will, by default, be defending the city’s position as well.

Lincoln was asked if he sees any conflict in defending the city’s position in the parking lot suit while attempting to sue the mayor in the lawsuit filed last week.

“We think it’s completely consistent,” he said. “We are representing and protecting ELRA’s interests, but we are also protecting what we believe to be the larger interests of the city.”

Attorney Ricinda Perry is referred to in the ELRA complaint, she recommended to the commission that Bradenton attorney Charles Johnson represent the mayor in this matter. The commission approved this recommendation, and also approved Perry’s suggestion that the city pay the mayor’s legal fees.

Johnson’s office has yet to respond to the ELRA allegations.

The ELRA complaint alleges that Shearon threatened or suggested that he would not renew the contracts of Building Official Steve Gilbert and Planning Official Alan Garrett unless they took positions unfavorable to BeachHouse development applications and requests.

The complaint also claims Shearon instructed Code Enforcement Officer Gail Garneau to cite the Beach-

House for code enforcement violations even if none existed. According to the complaint, Garneau asked the mayor to put those orders in writing, and the comlplaint says he refused to do so.

When asked about the basis of the allegations put forth in the complaint, ELRA attorney Robert Lincoln said, “We have good reason to believe all of the allegations in that complaint are true, but I am not going to disclose to the source of this information.”

Lincoln did acknowledge that his sources may be called upon to testify if the complaint is not resolved before being heard by a county judge.

On Thursday, Lincoln sent an e-mail to Perry stating his opinion that any efforts made by the mayor to “uncover who’s talking” would be considered “a threatening and hostile act.”

Board recommends part of Sandbar plan The plan would add a parking lot to the Sandbar restaurant site plan, but the Planning and Zoning Board recommended against it.

ANNA MARIA – By a unanimous vote, the city’s Planning and Zoning Board (P&Z) voted to accept a modified site plan for the Sandbar restaurant without a new lot at Spring Avenue and Gulf Drive.

P&Z member Micheal Coleman recused himself from voting because of his ties with Sandbar owner Ed Chiles and the Pine Avenue Restoration project.

The additional parking lot would be designed to require vehicles to exit the lot onto Spring Avenue, turning right to avoid conflicts with traffic at the intersection, but board members felt the restaurant does not need this much more parking, even with the city’s recommendation to restrict the use of the lot to restaurant employees.

P&Z member Gene Aubrey said the Sandbar already had adequate parking spaces and asked, “How much is enough?”

While recent rains showed how drainage improvements were working, engineer Lynn Burnett said she incorporated another change in the plan that would use landscaping to keep headlights from shining into an adjacent residence.

Prior to considering the change, the board voted Lou Ellen Wilson as chair, replacing Tom Turner who stepped down for health reasons.

They also voted for Gene Aubrey as vice chair.

Even though the plan would lose one parking space as it directs pedestrians away from traffic, the board felt the additional lot would be a liability.

Sgt. Paul Davis, of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, said the additional lot was his biggest concern because it would create more traffic problems.

Aubrey moved to recommend accepting the site plan without the extra lot and the board agreed. The issue now goes before the city commission.

Long Bar hearing rescheduled Due to a grammatical error, the Thursday, Feb. 6, Long Bar Pointe preliminary site plan public hearing has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Feb 25. The site plan hearing will take place during the Manatee County Commission meeting scheduled to at 9 a.m. inside the Manatee County Administrative Building in Bradenton. The public will have the opportunity to address commissioners at this meeting.

During last week’s meeting, the county attorney informed commissioners that there was a mistake in the advertising of the public hearing that required the hearing to be readvertised in order to meet legal requirements. In regard to the proposed 200-home residential development, the legal notice described the property’s relationship to El Conquistador Parkway as “northerly” when it should have said “westerly.”

n the stock market’s run-up during 2013, investors started to focus in on rising prices as priority. In the first few weeks of 2014, with the S&P 500 down a bit more than 6 percent, investors are now focusing on declining prices and wondering if the good times are over. The short-term emotions of investing can swing quickly.

One thing we know a bit about at my firm is holding high quality businesses as owners, as opposed to trading stocks for short-term gains, which often turn out to be losses. When investing as an owner, several advantages are put on your side that I think are key to being a successful investor.

The advantage which I believe is the most important, but is not often talked about in our 24/7 world of short-term investment perspective, relates back to the true purpose of investing for most investors.

We work to accumulate assets through our lives, then hope to have that pool of assets be sufficient so that it can then create income to support our needs when we don’t want to work any longer.

Many different types of investments can create income when we need to depend on our investment nest egg for our lifestyle. Bonds of various types are the usual go-to investment to produce a regular income stream with reasonable safety.

Real estate investment trusts, master limited partnerships and preferred stocks can produce nice income streams, but can be as volatile as stocks, bringing the distraction of short-term price swings back into view.

I submit that perhaps the best income producing vehicle, given sufficient time is the one investors usually buy for other reasons. Common stocks which regularly and aggressively raise their dividend payment are the ultimate income generators.

Really? Own common stocks that go up and down in value, sometimes dramatically, for income?

The answer is yes! For investors who can put themselves in the position or mindset of owning a company and for whom this portion of their portfolio can be left alone for 15 years or more, stocks may be the ultimate income choice. You can remove the worry about the inevitable ups and downs in short-term prices and focus on the growing income stream as an owner. Here’s why.

Let’s take a typical (hypothetical) company that pays a current dividend yield of 3 percent, and has a 30 year history of raising its dividend each year, through the good times and bad at an average rate of 10 percent per year. This company is a bit above the S&P 500’s long term dividend increase

The income from this company will double approximately every seven years, assuming it keeps up the annual boosts to the dividend at a 10 percent annualized rate.

This can’t be guaranteed, but is easy to follow to make sure the company keeps moving in the right direction. So, based on your original investment in our hypothetical company, your yield will be about 6 percent in seven years, and 12 percent in 14 to 15 years.

A portfolio of these types of companies can be quite powerful at producing a rising income stream.

Buying a 15-year corporate bond from the same hypothetical

company would probably yield income of around 4 to 5 percent of the amount invested, and that’s the same rate you would receive in the 15th year of owning the bond, well behind the 12 percent yield of owning the stock of the hypothetical company in our example. Don’t you think that with the dividend rising 300 percent over 15 years that the stock prices would also appreciate?

Why is my reference to 15 years so important? There haven’t been any 15-year periods where stock prices haven’t at least broken even and that you wouldn’t have had a positive return when factoring in the rising dividend income.

The average for stock price returns across all rolling 15-year periods is 8 percent. Add to that

the rising dividend income and you have some attractive returns, all while focusing on getting more money to spend each year than the year before.

Investing in rising dividend companies is a great solution to increase income through retirement and have appreciation in value to fund your other goals.

Charter group needs member The Holmes Beach Charter Review Commission is seeking applicants for a position on the board. Applications are available at the city clerks’ office, 5801 Marina Drive, and a member will be approved at the group’s meeting on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 9 a.m.

The commission meets weekly to review the city’s charter and recommend changes. Voters must approve the changes in the November election.

Keeping track of birds De Soto National Memorial, 8300 De Soto Memorial Hwy, Bradenton, will be a host location for the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) on Saturday, Feb. 15, starting at 7 a.m. and continuing until noon. This time frame should cover a very active time of the day.

The GBBC is an annual event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent and in Hawaii. These numbers help to determine the health of a variety of bird populations. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It is free, fun, and easy, plus it helps the birds.

Participants will be allowed to spend as little or as much time within the five hour period and are not required to show up exactly at 7 a.m. They will record species and numbers counted. Organizers will collect all of the findings and the information will be added to an online checklist on the GBBC web site.

Participants will be able to go on line to see what has been reported from the Park or anywhere in the United States and Canada. Participants may also send in photographs of the birds they see.

December visitation up December 2013 tourism was up 12.3 percent over December 2012, with 39,300 visitors to Manatee County, according to Research Data Services, the county’s Tampa-based tourism consultant.

Room nights were up 8.1 percent, with 105,600 room nights in December 2013. Direct expenditures were up by 20.9 percent over the previous December, totaling $21,021,600 for the month.

Countywide, occupancy was 59.4 percent in December 2013, up 7.8 percent from December 2012.

On Anna Maria Island, occupancy was at 48.8 percent, up 1.5 percent from the previous December.

Countywide room rates averaged $137.70 a night, up 6.9 percent from the previous December. Anna Maria Island room rates averaged $151.90, up 7.1 percent.

Visitors from the Midwest were most numerous accounting for 19.2 percent of visitors, followed by the Northwest, with 18.8 percent of visitors, and Europeans accounting for 17.7 percent of visitors.

The Manatee County Tourist Development Council presented Carol Whitmore with a surfboard-shaped plaque on Monday for her service as chair of the advisory board to the Manatee County Commission.

Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) Director Elliott Falcione praised Whitmore for speaking her mind and for her honesty. “At one point we thought you had forgotten about the Island,� Whitmore said. “Wow, has that changed.�

Tourism Consultant Walter Klages told the council that 2013 was an “exceptional� year with “very significant economic impact,� and predicted that the upscale domestic and European markets will continue to grow between 4.5 to 6 percent this year.

In December, the European market grew by 17.7 percent, he said, adding “You have a tiger by the tail.�

Dr. Chris Sforzo, of Florida Orthopedic Specialists and Sports Medicine, and Antonio Servano, of Premier Sports Campus, told the TDC that they expect to bring visitors to the area to play lacrosse from May through January, when the county is looking for business, Falcione said. “Sports is a major segment for us,â€? Klages said, adding, “Of course we still do have the beaches‌ which is the core of our industry. What we have added is all these diversified activities that give us a much better competitive bite.â€?

The CVB is working on the first annual Bradenton Film Festival, set for May 15-18, CVB marketing manager Debbie Meihls told the board. Venues will include Manatee Technical Institute, the South Florida Museum, the Crosley Estate and the Bradenton Convention Center, she said.

The council, under the new leadership of Manatee County Commissioner Vanessa Baugh, elected member Vernon DeSear as the new vice chair to replace David Teitelbaum.

The board also viewed short videos on the Orbitz website featuring Manatee County.

Workshops at Art League The Anna Maria Island Art League will offer three workshops on Monday, Feb. 17, by instructor Tammy Barrons, a certified therapeutic recreation specialist who holds a minor in art.

Printmaking for ages 8 and older is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., offering young artists an opportunity to explore printmaking using a variety of artistic media and found objects. The cost is $35, which includes materials and supplies.

Monotype Printmaking for teens and adults will be offered from 2 to 5 p.m., demonstrating how to use a smooth surface (matrix or etching plate) and paint or ink to transfer an image to paper or other substrate. The cost is $40, including materials and supplies.

Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released trout, Spanish mackerel and bluefish in Sarasota Bay, trout, blues and redfish in Gasparilla Sound and snook and trout in the ICW near Venice at night on flies, top water plugs and CAL jigs with shad tails during the past week. The best action of the week was with large Spanish mackerel in Sarasota Bay. Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, Ill., and Jack McCulloch, from Lakewood Ranch, fished Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande with me on Monday. They had steady action catching and releasing blues, trout to 19 inches and a 23-inch red on CAL jigs with shad tails.

We fished deep grass flats on both sides of the bay where he caught and released trout and several Spanish mackerel on Ultra Hair Clouser flies, CAL jigs with shad tails and top water plugs. Despite a good tide and warmer water, snook fishing was slow on Tuesday’s night fly fishing trip. Dense sea fog rolled in just before our night snook trip on Wednesday evening and caused us to reschedule that trip.

The snook bite was better when Mike Perez and Harry Shubeck, from Sarasota, fished with me on Thursday evening. We fished lighted docks in the ICW near Venice where they caught and released seven or eight snook and a 20-inch trout on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly. Snook were being picky so we had to finesse them with different presentations and stripping speeds to get them to bite.

Jeff Syring, from Minn., fished Sarasota Bay with me on Friday afternoon. It was his first saltwater fly fishing trip, and he did

well, catching and releasing trout and ladyfish on Ultra Hair Clouser flies at Stephens Point. I did some private fly casting instruction with a teenage student on Saturday morning. He made good progress and was loading the fly rod and shooting line by the end of the session.

Fishing deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay for trout, Spanish mackerel, blues, pompano and more should continue to be a good option. Look for reds and big trout in potholes or tailing on shallow grass flats of Gasparilla Sound or lower Tampa Bay on negative low tides as we approach a full moon next week. Tripletail should also be a good option in the coastal Gulf when conditions are good.

Manatee count holds steady

A recent aerial survey of the Florida manatee population turned up only three animals fewer than in 2011, the last time the survey was done.

But after 2013’s all-time record high death toll of 829 manatees, and another 41 deaths in January this year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is quick to point out that the survey is not a complete census and only indicates a minimum number for the endangered marine mammals in Florida waters and a snapshot of where they are at the time.

Surveyors from nine organizations on Jan. 24 and Jan. 27 spotted 4,831 manatees from the air, split about evenly between the coasts, with 2,317 on the east coast and 2,514 on the west coast.

The number is three less than 2011’s count of 4,834 and 246 less than 2010’s record high population count of 5,077.

“We are encouraged by the relatively high count, especially given the high number of manatee deaths documented recently,” Gil

Cold, watercraft strikes and red tide are among the biggest causes of death among manatees.

The count is done on cold days,

when manatees gather at warmwater power plant outflows and springs, and when the water is clear and they are easier to spot.

The explorer also designated a cluster of islands 70 miles west of Key West as Las Tortugas because of the many sea turtles nesting there. As with other Florida beaches, including Anna Maria Island, the islands of Dry Tortugas National Park still have loggerhead and green turtles coming back year after year to lay their eggs.

Settler’s Market planned for Island Heritage Day The Island Historical Society plans to celebrate the arts and crafts practiced by early Island settlers.

ANNA MARIA – The Island Historical Society will present its first Settler’ Market to celebrate Island Heritage Day at the Island Historical Museum complex at 402 Pine Ave., Anna Maria, on Saturday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Come learn about the arts and crafts practiced by early Island settlers including keeping bees; spinning wool; making pine needle baskets, bonnets, soap and quilts; growing and using herbs, caning chairs and more. Periodic demonstrations of various arts and crafts and native plant tours of the garden will be offered throughout the day.

There will be old fashioned kids games such as marbles, ball and cup, ring toss, bean bag and a Fig Newton toss with prizes. Kids can hand crank the old Victrola and hear old time music.

Valentine effort for homeless pets Paper hearts are being hung at businesses to support a fundraising effort to save local shelter animals who are in danger of being euthanized and to help them find a forever home.

Moonracer No Kill Animal Rescue Inc., and Forget Me Not Animal Rescue are two local organizations that save dogs and cats from the Manatee County Animal Services shelter. They concentrate on rescuing those animals who are on death row. Euthanasia is, unfortunately, the pending fate of some of these animals. It is not because they are bad animals or even due to illness. Sometimes there are just too many animals so they are put down due to lack of space.

If you see a heart at a business, buy it. Give what you can – $1 to $20 or more – write your name on the heart and the shopkeepers will display it.

The participating shops are Island Fitness, Island Coffee Haus and Paradise Cafe in Holmes Beach; Anna Maria Olive Oil Outpost on Pine Avenue in Anna Maria; and Perks for Pets in Bradenton.

Their goal is to raise $500 by February 17. All shops will have paper hearts through the 16.

HOLMES BEACH – AMI Historical Society board member Lynn Brennan shared her love of Island history with a full house of interested residents and visitors recently at the Island Branch Library.

“My parents bought land here on Oak Avenue in 1949,” Brennan told the group. “Since then, we have lived there as a second home. My husband and I built a home on Oak Avenue and moved here full time about a year and a half ago.”

She explained that two residents got together in 1990 to preserve the Island’s history.

“We recently had the museum refurbished and cleaned, and the documents are being digitized by interns from New College,” she continued.

“Our mission statement is to share the history of the Island with people and one way is through our docents. Another is with the help of two books by one of the founders, “The

Early Days” and “Tales of Three Cities.”

Brennan then presented five questions “Jeopardy” style for audience members to answer by listening to the presentation.

She started with the Indians, who came to the Island to hunt and fish, but did not live here.

The Spaniards explored the area in 1532 and in 1839, the U.S. government commissioned a map of the Tampa

Bay area on which Anna Maria Island was called Long Island.

“In 1893, George Emerson Bean was the first settler,” Brennan said. “He had a government grant to develop a huge tract of land from today’s Bean Point to Ginny’s and Jane E’s. He dreamed that this Island would become a resort for day visitors because the only way to get here was by boat."

In 1896, Jose Casanas estab-

lished a fish camp in Bradenton Beach. In 1897, Sam and Annie Cobb homesteaded in Holmes Beach, and in 1901, Rurick Cobb became the first settler in Bradenton Beach.

Board considers whether mayor should vote They also discussed an expense account for the mayor and the mayor’s appointments to city boards.

HOLMES BEACH – As the charter review commission discussed Article IV. Mayor, several questions arose including whether the mayor should vote and have an expense account.

Mayor Carmel Monti asked the board to consider allowing the mayor to vote when there is not a quorum and there is a tie vote.

“We discuss all the issues that come before city government,” Monti said. “If an issue is very important to the city, I think my position should weigh in a much as the commission.”

Member Pam Leckie disagreed said, “If you’re acting as the city manager, you need to inform your commission so that they understand everything and they vote. You have no vote.”

The others agreed.

Commissioner Jean Peelen asked why the mayor has veto power.

“The veto process sustains some balance within the government,” Chair Bob Johnson replied. “It is check and balance.”

Expense account

Regarding an expense account, Monti said from time to time, he has to pay for a group’s meals while meeting with county and other city officials. He suggested an expense account of $100 per month, which also would be allowed for city commissioners.

“I never heard of it in a charter, but it needs to be addressed, “Leckie said.

City Treasurer Lori Hill pointed out that the monthly stipend for the mayor and commissioners is not a salary, but it is to be used for expenses.

“I have a major objection to that,” Monti stressed.

“Why should I pay taxes on something that’s city business?”

Peelen said commissioners are reimbursed for conferences, meals, mileage and parking fees. Monti said lunch and business meetings are not included, but meals at conferences are covered.

City Attorney Patricia Petruff asked Hill to research how other cities and counties handle expense accounts.

“One way to resolve the issue would be a resolution to increase your salary to cover those additional expenses,” Hill said in a memo the next day.

“A second would be to have a resolution allowing you to expense up to a certain amount and have it approved by commission. A third is possibly an additional allowance, but it would be taxable as your phone allowance is.”

She said she is waiting for responses from other cities and the county.

In 1907, Sam Cobb built Cobb’s Marine Ways, the Island’s first commercial establishment, at the end of 52nd Street. The first post office was housed there, and a colorful character named Uncle Sam Ditmas delivered mail.

John and Caroline Roser came to the north end of the Island in 1910 to invest money they made selling the patent to the Fig Newton to Nabisco for $1 million. They joined with George Emerson Bean and George Wilhelm Bean to form the Anna Maria Beach Company and create a resort.

Captain Mitch Davis, a developer and architect, also joined them and built the city pier in 1911, Roser Chapel in 1913 and the first schoolhouse, where the Island Community Center is now located, in 1914.

In 1921, the first bridge was built from Cortez to Bradenton Beach, where the city’s pier now stands. This opened the Island up to more people, who came and built homes, but little was done until Jack Holmes began developing Holmes Beach in the 30s and 40s.

Charlene and Rick Doll, of Anna Maria, were the first customers through the door. Rick had the first cup of coffee and after breakfast, they went downstairs to the redesigned bar and had the first beer.

Becca and Tom Lieb, from Philadelphia, were glad it reopened before they left for home.

“One reason we come to the Island is the Rod and Reel Pier,” said Becca Lieb.

“We’re leaving today and we’ve been coming here for the past four years.”

Manatee County Sheriff’s Deputy Gary Sellitto was there when the dining room filled with smoke. He inspected the facility at that point and when he saw smoke in the kitchen, he asked the customers to leave. For his actions, the Sheriff’s Office named him its deputy of the month for October.

He returned for breakfast Friday.

“It’s a big improvement over the old one,” he said. “I’m glad it’s the same format as the old one, but they had to make changes to meet the code.”

Marie Marsh, from Marion, Ohio, was the last customer to leave the restaurant, and she returned Friday for breakfast and to check out the new interior.

“This is a new beginning, a new chapter,” she said. “I’m glad it’s still here.”

Marsh and her family have been coming to the Island for 34 years, and they always ate at the Rod and Reel when they came, she said.

Jerry Hill, from Indiana, ate breakfast also. He has been coming to the Island for several years.

“I enjoyed the meal this morning and I’m glad it’s open,” he said.

Before the breakfast brew crowd arrives the renovated downstairs bar sits empty. The old bar top, containing hundreds of photos and other pieces of memorabilia, was carefully removed and preserved in a unique wall display.

After the fire, J&J Graphics owner Joan Carter drew up a T-shirt design using the one the restaurant uses for its shirts. She added funny descriptions to the food on the logo in the theme of the fire, for instance, “roasted oysters” instead of “fried,” and “scorched jalapeno peppers” instead of “hot.” She made an agreement with All Island Denominations to give the proceeds, after her expenses, to them to help the employees, who were suddenly put out of work, with their expenses. She said to-date, the blue colored shirts have raised $15,000 for the cause, and she still has shirts in stock in all sizes. Kandy Kerekes, of Three Island Monkeys in Island Sun Plaza is also selling shirts.

“I’m going to print more and sell them through the first week of March,” she said. “After that, they become collector’s items.”

authority to make recommendations on all board appointments with the approval of the city commission with the exception of the planning commission.

Petruff said planning commission appointments are governed by state statute, as are code and police pension board appointments. She suggested that they compile a list of all the city’s standing committees.

“The issue is what is the real power of that board and how much of an influence does it have on the community?” Johnson pointed out. “It has the potential for having significant influ-

ence.

“Is their selection controlled in some fashion so that it is politically neutral?

This is a document for guidance of governance of our community, and it says we the citizens want to have some say in what’s going on.”

Jim Plath suggested they list which boards are governed by that particular section of the charter.

Voting on amendments

Board members also discussed how the charter amendments would appear to voters in November.

Leckie asked if people would vote on them as a whole, and noted, “People

could vote the whole thing down if they don’t like one section.”

Monti asked if the changes would be highlighted. Member David Cheshire said people won’t be concerned about minor wording changes, but if there are major changes there should be public discussion.

“That’s the way we’re structuring this,” Johnson said. “In fact, we’ll probably have some evening meetings.”

Monti said they could have a summary meeting on the changes.

“In the in the past, they did break it up by sections for yes and no, so perhaps that could be done,” Petruff pointed out. “You could call out by ar-

ticle the things that are significant.”

Members discussed Article, V, City Clerk, and whether or not the qualifications for the position should be listed in the charter.

In the previous week’s meeting, members discussed Article III, Legislative, and agreed that the section regarding initiative and referendum should be rewritten and clarified.

The commission’s next meeting is Thursday, Feb. 13, at 9 a.m., when they will select a new member from applications submitted to city hall and continue discussing department head positions.

Navigating a sea of change

id you ever have the feeling that you’re right in the middle of a sea change and maybe just a little nervous about what’s around the next bend? Well, it’s probably safe to say that Anna Maria Island and likely all of Manatee County is in the midst of a sea of change in the real estate market, which could make people both happy and unhappy, depending on the course you’re headed.

Last June, I wrote a story about the listing prices in the three cities on Anna Maria Island starting to go well over a million. At that time there were 56 properties listed at or over $1 million dollars within the three cities. The breakdown then was 16 properties in the city of Anna Maria being listed over $1 million and one in the $900,000s. Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach at that time had 40 properties over $1 million and 12 properties in the $900,000s.

Based on the listing prices I’ve been following, I assumed these numbers would be considerably higher now than last year, and I was right. Here’s the update as of this

Anna Maria also had 2 properties listed in the 900,000s.

In Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach the breakdown is three properties listed at $3 million or over, eight properties listed between $3 million and $2 million and 38 properties listed between $2 million and $1 million, a total of 49 compared to 40 in June of last year. There were also 12 properties in the $900,000s.

The grand total for all cities on the island

went from 56 last June listed at $1 million or over to 72 now. Considering that June 2013 was only a little over seven months ago, an almost 30 percent increase in over $1 million properties is substantial.

Million dollar listing prices off the island are also rapidly increasing. Our neighbors in little Cortez currently have four homes listed between $3 million and $1 million, and a search of realtor.com reveals over 80 properties in Bradenton listed over $1 milion with many of these listings in northwest Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch and on Riverview Boulevard.

Not only are the numbers of properties staggering, but the listing prices are also staggering. One property at the Concession Golf Club is listed at $16,500,000, another on Riverview Boulevard at $4,500,000, with several over $3 million and many over $2 million spread out through Bradenton. Hard to believe this is going on in sleepy little Bradenton but then it is The Friendly City with Anna Maria Island in its backyard.

So what comes with higher listing prices?

Higher selling prices. A recent report in this paper confirmed that last year’s sales on Anna Maria Island were up considerably from the year before. The top selling price for a single-family home was $3,425,000, for a condo $2,622,000 and for duplexes $1,100,000.

Of course, not everyone is happy about property value increases. Some feel it’s another bubble in the making, and unfortunately, some long time Island residents feel they are being pushed out because of the flood insurance controversy and increase of weekly rentals. Many of the new buyers are from outside of the United States, and many from Canada, and of course, young retirees haven’t even begun to arrive.

Real estate is such a dynamic market we never know what will happen next. But whatever course you’re on, just remember that good sailors know when to trim the sails and head for cover, so they’re not swamped by changeable seas.

A full plate at February FISH meeting March elections will determine future configuration of board of directors

CORTEZ – Topics of discussion at the Monday, Feb. 3 Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage (FISH) board of directors meeting included news of an unsuccessful grant application, pending board elections, a request to place a radio antenna on FISH property, and the start of grouper season.

This weekend, FISH will host the Wishin’ I was Fishin’ Commercial Fishing Festival on Saturday, Feb 15 and Sunday, Feb. 16.

Grant denied

Board members were informed that FISH’s application for a $300,000 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Gulf of Mexico grant would not be given full proposal consideration.

The grant was submitted by Anna Maria resident and marine biologist Helen Dixon, who volunteered her grant writing expertise to FISH last fall.

According to the letter received from the EPA, the agency received 150 grant proposals with a combined worth of $36 million, but the program only has $2.5

million in available funds.

Von Hahmann said she and an EPA representative would conduct a telephone review of the FISH proposal in order to get a better understanding of its strengths and weaknesses, which can be of use when applying for future grants.

Candidates named

On Monday, March 30, FISH will hold its annual member meeting and board elections.

The elections will take place at Fishermen’s Hall in Cortez.

The nominating committee presented a slate of six current board members seeking reelection for the seven board positions that will soon expire. John Stevely, Chips Shore, Linda Molto, Plum Taylor, Doug Calhoun and Marshall Fisher are seeking reelection.

BoatWorks committee chair Jim Kelly is the only board member whose term expires this year not seeking reelection. During his first term, Kelly played a vital role with the FISH BoatWorks program, working with BoatWorks manager Rick Stewart to better coordinate and promote the BoatWorks program, including the recently well-received boat building classes.

Kelly’s decision leaves the nominating committee one candidate short of the seven needed.

Additional nominations will be accepted at the March 30 meeting before the board elections

take place. With the recent additions of Pat Potts, Doug Calhoun and Bill Miller, all 15 board seats are currently filled.

Radio FISH?

WSLR 96.5 low-power FM station manager Dave Beaton traveled from Sarasota to Cortez to explore the possibility of erecting a 45 to 60 foot radio antenna tower inside the FISH Preserve.

Beaton explained that the WSLR-affiliated Peace Education and Action Center recently acquired a new low-power FM license from the FCC that allows for the operation of a lowpower FM radio station in Bradenton.

Station representatives are now searching for a suitable location to place to a broadcast antenna in southwest Bradenton. Beaton said renting space on a commercial tower costs $1,500 to $2,000 a month. Operating as a non-profit, volunteer station, the hope is to keep operating costs lower by owning, rather than renting, antenna space, but the antenna has to be located within a specific radius that encompasses southwest Bradenton.

Low-power FM stations typically have a broadcast range of approximately 10 miles.

The goal is for WSLR’s sister station, 100.1 FM, to be located in area that provides signal coverage to Cortez and Anna Maria Island.

FISH treasurer Jane von Hahmann re-

minded the board that the 95-acre FISH nature preserve is subject to a conservation easement reached with Manatee County that prohibits development. Although there are areas on the FISH property that fall outside the easement area, including the Wilkerson parcel, von Hahmann suggested that the electrical connections and power provisions would not be sufficient for an antennae tower.

Board member Karen Bell told Beaton there is an existing antenna tower atop the nearby AP Bell Fish Company warehouse. Beaton said he was not sure if the privately-owned warehouse fell within the specific target area for possible antennae sites, but said he would take a look at it before returning to Sarasota.

Noting that his request was of an exploratory nature, Beaton said he would conduct further research and follow up at a future meeting.

Grouper in season

During her commercial fishing report, Bell said the grouper season is off to a good start; the mullet roe season is winding down after a short but successful run; stone crab season has been “awful;” and there is a “desperate need” for bait fish, which is in high demand and hard to find lately.

AGREEMENT: New pact would finish renourishment project FROM PAGE 1

Supporting documents from Tuesday’s commission meeting included a contract for the project, but monetary amounts were left blank. The agreement calls for placing sand along the

two public beaches and three sandfilled geotextile containers, or tubes, north of Longboat Pass, just north of an existing tube, to limit sand from the Coquina Beach segment from passing through the existing jetty into the pass.

Hunsicker said earlier Great Lakes was going to leave the area after finishing the first portion of the project because it had another job waiting.

He said it was unclear whether they would return and that’s when he started negotiating with the contractor.

The renourishment arrived in Bradenton Beach on Sunday and will proceed toward the end of the first leg of the project by mid-March, barring any unusual delays. After that, the county had asked Great Lakes to stay and renourish Cortez and Coquina beaches, the second leg of the overall project.

Meanwhile, the pipe stretches down the beach for several blocks and as they progress south, they move the entry point for the pipe to come out of the Gulf regularly and take away the pipe that is no longer part of the operation so tourists and other beachgoers can enjoy the new sand. Where there are pipes, they construct sand walkovers.

Museum hosts oral history project

CORTEZ – Cortez native Richard Culbreath sat in front of a video recorder on Saturday in what’s now the Florida Maritime Museum, and told surprised students from the Manatee School for the Arts that he went to school there as a kid, when it was a schoolhouse.

Students Shannon Kelley, Thor Bean and Deja Brown are working with the NOAA Fisheries “Voices from the Fisheries” project, collecting oral histories from Cortezians involved in the maritime community. They and other participating students will produce interviews, paintings and photographs that will be displayed in the village, on the nationwide project’s website, http://voices.nmfs. noaa.gov, and at the museum.

Culbreath told them he was born in a house about three blocks away, which is still in the family, and that he now lives in the house next door.

He told them about his family, like Julian "Goose" Culbreath, who was awarded the Florida Folk Heritage Award for his fiddle playing, and his daughter, Caroline Doig,

the first female crabber in Cortez, and how the 1995 net ban brought Cortez fishing families’ livelihoods to a screeching halt.

“It was unwarranted,” he said in his characteristically quiet voice, explaining that the allegations that persuaded people to vote for the ban – like netting dolphins and pelicans – were false. But commercial fishermen were outnumbered in Florida, and lost, though they continue to fight in court to overturn the ban, he said.

He talked about how fishing has changed from people eating and sharing mullet to stay alive during the Depression to today’s fishermen keeping just the high-dollar roe, or eggs, and trashing the fish.

And he said that development is as bad as the net ban for commercial fishing, applauding local officials for denying a new marina at Long Bar Pointe, where he said people have been fishing since the 1880s.

Cortez has become a bed and breakfast community for tourists as fishing families leave the crippled industry and sell their family homes, he said.

Still, even with the choice to live anywhere in the world, he would choose Cortez, in the house next to the house where he was born.

Cortez featured on WEDU The PBS television program, “Diamonds Along the Highway,” will air an episode about the Cortez fishing village, “Gone Fishing For Old Florida: Voices of Cortez,” on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 8:30 p.m., Cortez time.

The program will feature fisherman of several generations, including “Red Dog,” “Blue” and “Soupy,” and uncover the life of the bayside village.

“This is the last place like this in

Florida. Once it is gone, it will be gone forever,” said Dr. Mary Fulford Green, a descendant of one of Cortez’s founding families.

New Cortez novel published

CORTEZ – Author J.B. Crawford will feature his second young adult novel about the fishing village of Cortez at the Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival this weekend, Feb 15-16.

The fictional fishing village of DeSoto is once again the setting for “Arianna and the Spanish Sardines,” which follows 2012’s

“Nathan and the Stone Crabs.”

The books, written for the author’s nine grandchildren, is filled with

references to colorful characters and places that locals will recognize, like Cortez artist and festival organizer Linda Molto and Cousin Wally’s dock.

Crawford, a retired high school English teacher and commercial fisherman, weaves fishing lessons into the book so detailed that a novice who reads carefully might be able to crew on a fishing boat without causing an accident like the one in the

novel. Lessons about first aid, classic cars and nearby historical sites like Egmont Key and Fort DeSoto also pepper the book.

Obituaries Deborah Kaye Yarbrough Murphree Deborah Kaye Yarbrough Murphree, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt born Aug. 12, 1952, in Dallas, Texas, died Feb. 5, 2014, in Bradenton, Fla., after a short illness. She is preceded in death by her parents, Doyce and Oneita Yarbrough, both of Dallas; and father and mother-in-law, John D. and Dorothy Murphree, also both of Dallas.

She is survived by Roger L. Murphree, her loving husband of 39+ years; son, Eric; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; six beautiful grandchildren; sisters, JoAnn, Constance, Jennifer, Rebecca; and brothers, Doyce III and Jon. and also numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She retired from UPS after 30 years of faithful service.

Debbie had a contagious smile, laughed often, and loved to cook and entertain. She was a beloved member of the Anna Maria Island Privateers, a non-profit local organization that supports kids and community. She will enter the ship’s Davey Jones Honor Roll of deceased members with Privileged Member status.

The Coast Guard officer felt the pilot was intoxicated and conducted a field sobriety test, which the defendant failed. The Bradenton Beach officer took him to a Sheriff’s Office station for a breath test, which the defendant refused to take.

Patricia Cameron Patricia Jean “Patty” Cameron, of Holmes Beach, born in Minneapolis, Minn., on April 10, 1931, to Patrick and Loralyn (Jolliffe) Collins, passed in to the care of our Savior on Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, preceded by the compassionate support of Tidewell Hospice, Bradenton.

Patty was a long time resident of Warminster, Pa. She graduated with honors from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She developed a CPA firm specializing in tax related problems. Patty was an advocate of women’s rights and an early supporter of NOW. Patty was a financial advisor to Gov. Milton Shapp; to the Speaker, The Honorable Jim Wright; and to Gov. Ann Richards. Patty later achieved notable success in banking; was the only female selected by President Reagan’s Committee of Eight (assembled to solving national banking problems). Patty’s achievements also included financial advisor to Spokane, Washington’s successful EXPO in 1974. Patty’s entrepreneurial spirit and business savvy led to many adventures throughout the country developing and running several successful businesses alongside her husband of 40+ years.

Patty is survived by her husband, John James Cameron; brother Michael Collins; extended family members; and many dear friends. Rest in peace Patty.

He left, and when she followed and caught up with him, he started hitting her in the head and face. She ran home and locked herself in the house, and the defendant broke a window trying to get in. She locked herself in the bathroom until sheriff’s deputies arrived and placed him under arrest.

Bryant Elliott, 89, of Bradenton died Jan. 29, 2014.

Born in Timmins, Canada, he came to Florida in 1977. He was a graduate of the high school system in Ontario and the University of Manitoba in hospital administration. He served in the RCAF from 1942 to 1975, completing a tour of operation in the European Theatre of WWII and retiring as a major.

He was project administrator at the St. Vincent’s Hospital, Ontario, from 1975 to 1977. On arrival to Florida, he purchased the Flamingo Court Motel, now known as the Pelican Post, in Bradenton Beach. He sold the motel in 1983. He was a member of the Anna Maria Moose Lodge and served as administrator from 1978 until he retired in February 2004. In 1990, he was awarded the highest degree of Pilgrim in the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was also a member of Elks Lodge 1511, Eagles Lodge 1014 and the VFW. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; his brother Lorne, of Belleville, Ontario; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Gregory, and Nicole, of Pembroke, Ontario; three great- grandchildren, Bryce, Abigail, and Edith of Pembroke, Ontario; one stepson, Mark A. Coe, of

Born in Gary Ind., he has wintered in Holmes Beach since 2002 from Lowell, Ind. A veteran of the US Marine Corps Reserves, he was a retired director of guidance at Lowell High School (retiring in 2000); he was a former member of Cedar Creek Township Advisory Board; a member of the American Legion, where he served on Eli Lilly Legacy Committee; and he was a member of Knox Masonic Lodge.

Survived by wife of 49 1/2 years, Nancy, of Lowell, Ind. and Holmes Beach; a son, Scott (Melinda), of Littleton, Colo.; a brother, Robert W., of Chicago, Ill; a sister, Jean (Jerry) Nash, of Kouts, Ind. and Clermont, Fla.; and grandchildren, Tristan and Tanner.

1/12, 1:56 a.m., aggravated battery, 100 block of 73rd Street. The suspect said she had just stabbed her boyfriend for calling her a whore and pulling her hair. The victim had taken off in a car and the officer spotted him driving on Gulf Drive and stopped him. The car’s interior was covered in blood. EMS responded and he was taken to Blake Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition. The woman was placed under arrest.

1/12, 1:30 p.m., driving with suspended license and expired plate, 4700 block of Gulf Drive. The officer observed the defendant’s car had an expired plate and stopped him. Upon checking his driver’s license, he found it was suspended for failure to pay child support.

The driver was issued a ticket, and the officer contacted the registered owner of the car to take possession of it.

1/12, 1:32 p.m., driving with a suspended license, giving false identification to a law enforcement officer and war-

rant out of Ohio, 700 block of Manatee Avenue. The officer observed the driver and passenger not wearing seat belts and he stopped them. The driver gave a false name after saying he did not have his driver’s license with him. A computer check showed he had two suspensions and a prior conviction.

The driver was handcuffed and taken to jail.

1/13, 8:24 a.m., battery, 6800 block of Palm Drive. The complainant said a man known to her tried to sexually batter her on Jan. 7.

1/13, 1:55 p.m., theft, 500 block of 83rd Street. Forty feet of copper tubing was taken from a construction site.

1/14, 3:11 p.m., possession of drug equipment, 5600 block of Flotilla Drive.

The officer stopped the defendant for failure to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. The police had prior information that there might be drugs in the car. The officers asked for and received permission from the driver to inspect the car, and they found a pipe that could be used for marijuana.

Mr. Bones Bengals bounce into first

The Sun sports game of the week was a Bengals and Broncos battle for first place in the 14-to-17-year-old Anna Maria Island Community Center NFL flag football program.

Entering Saturday’s divisional matchups, Galati Yacht Sales Bucs, Mr. Bones Bengals and the Feast restaurant Broncos were all tied for first place with a 4 and 1 record.

The Galati Bucs team lost to the West Coast Surf Shop Jaguars in the 9 a.m. game on Saturday by a score of 39 to 20. This left the door open for the winner of the Bengals and Broncos noon game to bounce up into first place all alone in the division.

The Feast restaurant Broncos wasted little time and scored on the opening possession of the game.

Burke Hill took a handoff and scrambled through the middle of the field and down to the four yard line. On the next play, Hill threw a pass to the middle of the end-zone, where Josh Parrish made a diving catch for the touchdown. The extra-point was good when Hill threw to Toni Spurduto. 7-0 Broncos.

After a three and out by the Bengals, the Broncos got the ball back on offense. It looked like the Broncos were going to take an early twotouchdown lead when they had first and goal from the eight-yard line.

But the Bengals defense came up big when Malachi Goode intercepted a pass in the end-zone and returned it to the Broncos twelve-yard line.

The Bengals took advantage of this scoring opportunity. On third and goal, Bengals quarterback Neahmiah Goode tossed up a grab ball into the end zone. His receiver, Ryan Gilman, came through for him and ripped it away from the hands of a Broncos defender for the touchdown. The extra-point was good on a Neahmiah pass to Hunter Parrish which tied the game 7 to 7.

The rest of the first half was all defense and left the score 7 to 7 at the half. Defensive standouts for the Broncos were Jesse Lawson with eight flag pulls and two sacks and Chris Johnson had six flag pulls.

Defensive standouts for the Bengals were Malachi Goode, with five flag pulls and two interceptions, and his sister, Moriah Goode, with three flag pulls.

At the 12-minute mark left in the game, Hunter Parrish caught a short slant route pass. He spun and weaved his way through defenders making them miss for a 45-yard touchdown.

The extra-point was not good, but gave the Broncos the lead for the first time 13 to 7.

Just like the majority of the game, both defenses prevailed. With only 42 clicks of the clock left in the game, the Broncos had one last chance to tie the game. They marched down the field to the Bengals 15-yard line and called time out with eleven seconds remaining.

The Broncos now had no time outs left and only two plays to score from the 15. They had to throw the ball into the end-zone or risk the clock expiring. Scoring on the Bengals was difficult all day, and they had not been into the end-zone since their very first possession of the game.

Malachi Goode, of the Bengals, was not to be denied victory though. He intercepted the pass in the end-zone and took it all the way back for the pick-six touchdown and secured the first place victory for the Bengals 19 to 7 as time expired.

Golfers see new competition Summers can get slow at the Key Royale Golf Club without its seasonal residents and visitors, but things are starting to get busy. In action last week, Tom McDonnell and Barry Anderson tied for first place in the men’s golf, modified Stableford competition on Monday, Feb. 3, with scores of plus four. McDonnell, Dave Johnston and Mike Gille won the team competition with a plus four also.

Tom Lewis, David Kruger and Barry Anderson tied for first place in Wednesday’s men’s 18-hole competition with scores of 63.

Thursday saw a four-way tie for the 9-hole men’s scramble between the team of Ken Rickett, Mike Gille, Merritt Fineout and Gary Risner and the team of Tom McDonnell, Bob Terharr, Dan Richardson and Gary Alford with a score of -2.

There was a two-way tie for first place in Friday’s coed, 9-hole contest between the team of Hank Trembly, Charlie Knopp, Matt Behan and Bob Reid and the team of Mary Lou Dreier, Earl Huntzinger and Bob Dickinson with a 35.
