On Friday, he said running for a city commission seat was not on his radar at that time, but encouragement from others helped change his mind.

Members discussed signs to identify the city’s parks. West suggested using a small metal sign, approximately 12 by 18 inches, with the city seal and lettering stating City Park.

Members agreed on a recommendation of light blue for the sign with black lettering.

Fuller asked what parks would have signs, and West said Nunn’s Way at 83rd Street, Spring Lake Park at 6807 Holmes Blvd., the tennis and basketball courts at 62nd and 63rd streets and Flotilla Drive, Prince Park at 121 52nd Street and the four parks from 37th to 39th streets and Fourth to Sixth avenues.

West said there should be a sign on East Bay Drive to direct people to Grassy Point Preserve and that he would work with Benton to decide on a size and location.

HOLMES BEACH – While the traffic islands at East Bay Drive and Manatee Avenue have been transformed, beautification board members feel they could be improved.

The initial work included removing most of the plants but keeping the three palms, adding groupings of Indian Hawthorne and coontie adding brown stone, boulders trimmed with red crimson stone, small lime rock trim around plants and riprap as an edging barrier.

Public Works Foreman Dave Benton said the work cost about $5,000.

At the May 11 meeting, member Midge Pippel asked about adding artwork such as a sculpture, and the board voted to authorize her to explore the possibility. Member Jerry West said any artwork must adhere to line of sight guidelines from the Florida Department of Transportation.

Anna Maria qualifying opens Monday The two-week qualifying period for Anna Maria City Commission and Mayor’s candidates will open at noon on Monday, June 13 and close at noon on Murphy Yetter Friday, June 24.

Drainage project comes to central Holmes Beach

The first systems were installed in 2011 and include many streets in all three Island cities.

HOLMES BEACH – Neighbors gathered at Spring Lake Park last week to hear from City Engineer Lynn Burnett regarding the latest phase in the Island-wide drainage project.

Burnett told the group that as the Island grew, people used cheap available materials to build up the land on the Island in order to build homes and businesses.

“Over time, the layers built up and compacted and sealed off the ability for the water to drain back through the sand,” she said, adding that the drainage project is installing a filtration/percolation system in order to restore the ability for the water to drain.

Burnett explained that with this system, workers dig down until

they reach clean white sand. Filter fabric is used to line the sides of the trench, which is filled with large, clean aggregate to within 6 inches of the top. Next a layer of filter fabric is added and topped with white stone, so stable that people can park on it.

The first systems were installed in 2011 and now include many streets in all three Island cities.

The work is being funded by grants from the Southwest Water Management District and the stormwater utility fees being collected in all three cities.

This phase of work will be done around Spring Lake and includes Clark Drive between Palm Drive and Holmes Boulevard Palm Drive from 71st to 68th streets, the east side of Holmes Boulevard between Clark Drive and 68th Street and the around corner at Holmes Boulevard and 68th Street.

and Sons will be working in June and July along and within the city’s rights of way in the open and/or grassy areas adjacent to the edge of asphalt. In addition to installing the filtration/percolation system, the contractor will be cleaning, repairing and replacing existing pipes as needed.

Burnett said driveways and heavily landscaped areas would not be disturbed unless necessary and that construction areas would be scooped and filled the same day so that no sections would be left open overnight.

She said property owners who would like to install the filtration/ percolation system on the remaining three sides of their property could do so at their own cost, which would be approximately $5,000 to $6,000.

A second neighborhood meeting is set for Tuesday, June 21, at 5:30 p.m. in Spring Lake Park, 6807 Holmes Blvd. For further information or to discuss the project, contact Burnett at 941-526-3375.

Surf camp to The Center Everyday after surf camp, The Center will pick up children from the Surf Shop and bring them to The Center to participate in the Center’s summer camp, Summer My Way, until 6 p.m.

The cost is $25 for the day or $100 for the week.

The registration deadline for all summer camp activities is 9 p.m. on the Thursday prior to the week of camp.

Tree house trial ordered At a June 6 hearing, the judge ordered a trail to be set in July regarding the tree house built

by Richard Hazen and Lynn Tran in front of Angelino’s Sea Lodge at 103 29th St. in 2011. It has been the subject of an ongoing legal battle.

Monday’s hearing involved an initiative petition seeking to put an ordinance on the ballot for voters to decide if the tree house is legal. The city of Holmes Beach alleged that an election would be invalid under state law and requested a declaratory judgment.

In February, tree house attorney David Levin filed a motion arguing that the prohibition in state law applies to a development order and that the tree house is an accessory structure.

In turn, City Attorney Jim Dye filed a motion to strike Levin’s motion.

Holmes Beach qualifying begins June 20 Candidates have a week to qualify for two commission seats and the mayor’s seat.

HOLMES BEACH – Candidates have from noon on June 20 to noon on June 24 to qualify for the seats now held by City Commissioners Judy Titsworth, Marvin Grossman and Mayor Bob Johnson.

All have said they plan to run again. It would be Johnson’s second term, and Titsworth and Grossman are seeking their third terms.

All seats are for two-year terms.

A commissioner’s annual salary is $6,000 and the mayor’s is $12,000. Candidates must be citizens of the United States, registered voters in Manatee County

and two-year residents of the city.

Candidates must qualify through the office of City Clerk Stacey Johnston, who is the city’s Titsworth election official.

They can qualify by paying an election assessment fee of 1 percent of the annual salary of the office ($60 for commission candiGrossman dates and $120 for mayoral candidates), collecting signatures of 15 voters residing in the city and completing a candidate’s residency affidavit.

Or they may file an undue burden oath, Johnson which eliminates the fee, collect signatures of 15 voters residing in the city and complete

The election is on Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The polling locations are Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 6608 Marina Drive, and St. Bernard Catholic Church, 248 S. Harbor Drive.

Early voting will be available at the administration building of West Manatee Fire Rescue, 6417 3rd Ave. W., Bradenton, for the primary election on Saturday, Aug. 20, through Saturday, Aug. 27, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and for the general election on Monday, Oct. 24, through Sunday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 31, through Saturday, Nov. 5, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Armed threats draw law enforcement onto Island Gerald Alois Harles II was arrested and charged with threatening police with a firearm.

HOLMES BEACH – The parking lot at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church looked like a Manatee County Sherriff’s Office parking lot with more than 40 vehicles, most of them SUVs, parked there on Tuesday morning, The reason was a domestic case in the 500 block of 68th Street in Holmes Beach that had been ongoing since about 4:30 a.m. Officers were dispatched to the house at that hour after the mother of 30-year-old Gerald Alois Harles II called to report her son was drunk and tearing up the house.

According to the Holmes Beach Police Department news release, as the officers were speaking with the mother at the front door, the son came toward the door carrying what appeared to be a rifle or shotgun and he cocked it, as if getting ready to fire. The officers took cover behind their patrol vehicles. The son refused to come out of the house, would not release his

parents and threatened to kill his mother. He said he would shoot police before going to jail.

At that point, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office decided to send its SWAT Harles team, complete with an armored vehicle and a mobile command center, all of which was parked at the church.

Around 6 a.m., Harles released his parents, but would not come out or answer the phone. Meanwhile, an arrest warrant was issued for Harles, charging him with aggravated assault with a firearm. As the SWAT team was preparing to go into the residence, Harles answered the phone and he came out about 10 a.m. and was taken into custody.

According to Harles’ attorney Ryan Quigley, Harles slept through much of the event. Quigley sent this statement, “Gary Harles is a long time Holmes Beach resident and cares deeply about the Island. He would like to apologize to his surrounding neighbors for any disruption that was caused by this incident. It needs to be clarified that Mr. Harles was

A check of Manatee County Court records showed Harles had a traffic infraction in 2004.

EDITORIAL Hurricane season preview

C

all it a warm up, another bullet dodged, a soggy little taste of things to come.

Tropical Storm Colin - all rain and bluster but little bite - came ashore Monday on Anna Maria Island and throughout the Sunshine State in what seemed like super slow motion. Morning hours came and went with the occasional squall coming through, leaving expectant Islanders watching and waiting for whatever else was to come. High tide came and went right around 1 p.m., with the brunt of the storm having not yet not arrived, sparing us from what could have been some wicked storm surge flooding.

By the end of the day, some 5.5 inches of rain had fallen, inundating all the usual low-level streets and intersections and more than a few yards and homes.

With winds clocked locally at plus-50 mph, tree limbs easily became airborne, roofs lost shingles and boats everywhere were pulled from their moorings, floating free in rough seas or sinking after a thorough pounding by the high surf.

T

here were no reports of any serious injuries, thank goodness, and property damage appears to be minimal, although additional rainfall on Tuesday could result in more homes flooding before it's all over.

And while TS Colin did not prompt evacuations from any of the barrier island communities, it did put emergency agencies on alert with full preparations in place for rapid response. Kudos to the Coast Guard for its quick action in plucking three people from a sinking houseboat near the Bridge Street Pier and landing them ashore safely.

Just a week into hurricane season, Mother Nature stages her own dressrehearsal, of sorts, reminding us what she is capable of.

Bradenton Beach Police Chief Sam Speciale summed up Colin's glancing blow: "You plan for the worst but you never know what's going to happen. We were as ready as we could be."

Keep watching the skies.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Stop it – don’t shop it!

It appears obvious there’s little that can be done governmentally to prevent Dunkin Donuts-Baskin Robbins (or Baskin Robbins-Dunkin Donuts, whichever) from invading and doing serious damage to the locally owned and valued businesses on Anna Maria Island. However, there is something all the local residents and valued tourists and visitors, who treasure our local businesses, can do - STOP IT – DON’T SHOP IT! There are many locally owned businesses from Anna Maria to Bradenton Beach that offer fantastic homemade ice cream, donuts, and other pastries, which represent a unique value and source of revenue to residents of this island.

We don’t need a nationally franchised business encroaching on these local businesses – STOP IT – DON’T SHOP IT! I believe this is dangerous to the uniqueness of our community and is something residents concerned about preserving the residential quality of life we share find objectionable. And shame on Benderson plaza management for even allowing such a national franchise business to encroach and threaten the livelihood of more than one business in the same plaza. So, to the individual who hopefully is stuck

Don’t undo tobacco control Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took the long overdue step to assert its authority over tobacco products such as cigars, hookah, smokeless tobacco products and electronic cigarettes, which are increasingly popular with youth.

This regulation is critical to saving lives, keeping kids from starting lifelong, addictions and ending the deadly scourge of the tobacco industry on the American people.

But as is typical of the tobacco industry, they are now trying to convince lawmakers to undo several key aspects of the FDA’s oversight authority and undermine this recent public health win.

Senator Nelson, when it comes time to vote on the bill funding the FDA, please stand up for the health of your constituents and say no to the unscrupulous tactics of the tobacco industry by refusing to support any amendment

that would undermine FDA’s oversight authority over many of the tobacco products the industry is currently and successfully marketing to youth.

FDA’s authority over all tobacco products is a crucial first step to saving lives and keeping the next generation from starting lifelong addictions. Let’s keep heading in the right direction.

Local businesses that are complaining about chains (stores) need to understand that because they close for "out of season" they are catering to visitors and don't care about us residents. We want Publix, Walgreens, Ace Hardware, Dollar Store, Peaches, and Baskin/Robbins because those businesses want our business year-round, not just the tourist dollar. Remember, tourists don't pay property taxes and don't vote.

BRADENTON BEACH – After being met with opposition from other dock owners, and continued to a later date, a variance request to build a dock in front of adjoining lots at 2107 Ave. A has been amended.

Representing the property owner, the Richard Wagener Trust, Realtor Mike Norman presented the variance request to Special Master William Robinson Jr. at the Tuesday, May 24, variance hearing.

The applicant originally sought to build a connected dock that was 40-feet long, five feet wide and provided 20 feet of dockage in front of each lot. In order to build a connected dock, the applicant wants to eliminate the 10-foot side yard setback requirement at the east edge of one lot and the west edge of the other.

It was noted that a 20-foot dock with or without the required setback in front of Lot 29, at the corner of Avenue A and 21st Place North, would reduce the

ANNA MARIA – The Thursday, June 9, Anna Maria City Commission meeting will feature the second reading of a proposed ordinance that would penalize those who falsely advertise public lodging units located in the city.

If adopted, the ordinance would apply to all lodging units that advertise occupancy in excess of what is allowed by the city. This would include, but not be limited to, vacation rentals. The ordinance would also apply to property owners who signed restrictive covenants that prohibit them from using their properties as short-term rentals for the first five years after construction has been completed and to those who place guests in a unit other than the one advertised.

The ordinance is the result of the combined efforts of Mayor Dan Murphy and City Attorney Becky Vose.

Murphy said he was perusing the Internet and found a four-bedroom rental that advertised a 16-guest capacity and a five-bedroom rental that advertised the 20-person capacity.

The city’s vacation rental ordinance limits occupancy to eight persons per property unless the property has received grandfathered status. Grandfathered units are allowed two persons per bedroom, with no additional allowances for the use of sleeper sofas and cots in dens, offices and other rooms not considered bedrooms.

The penalty for violators would be a fine of up to $500 or up to 60 days in jail. Vose said the violation would pertain strictly to the advertising efforts and would not require the city to verify the number of guests actually occupying a unit.

Vose said the ordinance is supported by prohibitions on false advertising contained in the U.S. Constitution.

“We can restrict advertising which is false and misleading. There’s a need for this restriction and it’s to protect people from misleading advertising,” Vose told the commission when introducing the ordinance on May 26.

Officials say Manasota League doesn’t meet their needs Officials agreed that they should develop a priority list specific to the barrier islands.

LONGBOAT KEY – At the May 18 meeting of barrier island elected officials, Holmes Beach Commissioner Carol Soustek asked that one of the four island mayors attend Manasota League of Cities’ (MSLC) meetings.

She said she is felt that MSLC is “not concerned about the vacation rental

issue. This is an avenue that should be used to our benefit and I don’t think we are really using it.”

The MSLC is a regional league of the Florida League of Cities and includes representatives from the cities of Bradenton, Palmetto the barrier islands, Sarasota, North Port, Venice and Sarasota and Manatee counties.

According to the website, “MSLC is dedicated to a strong, united and active advocacy program and is committed to being a voice that is heard and is familiar to the local legislative delegation. Preservation of Home Rule is high

on the list of priorities.

“Legislative priorities are established for each legislative session. Members submit issues and concerns of their respective local governments for consideration in the list of legislative priorities.”

Bradenton Beach Mayor Bill Shearon said he attends MSLC meetings and that the group would “push vacation rental up on our priority list” and also the issue of using tourist bed tax money to fund public safety.

However, Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy said he had attended MSLC

meetings, but had resigned from the group and said, “None of their legislative proposals were necessary to the islands. Vacation rental is not an issue with them. I think that league is so big that issues tend to get lost.

“Our needs and issues on the barrier islands are more specific and are better handled in a meeting like this where we all have skin in the game.

We should speak with one voice and prioritize our legislative issues.”

“I strongly support that,” Shearon said. We can work together, and then we have some power.”

Mayors seek fairer distribution of proposed sales tax Island mayors feel their cities should receive more than county officials initially proposed.

The four island mayors have agreed on what they feel is an equitable distribution of the half-cent sales tax being considered by Manatee County to be used for infrastructure projects.

At a recent meeting of island elected officials, they discussed the disproportionate impact of tourists on the island cities’ infrastructure. They also noted that approximately 30 percent of the tax would be contributed by tourists and that 58 percent of the tourist bed tax money comes from the four island cities.

One proposal put forth by the county showed the following distribution of the tax: Manatee County, $22,833,877; Bradenton, $3,704,085; Palmetto, $927,416; Anna Maria, $110,357; and Bradenton Beach, $84,488, Holmes Beach, $278,174; and Long-

boat Key (Manatee County portion), $171, 803; The mayors’ proposal would allocate 90 percent based on a population formula and 10 percent based on collections of the tourist bed tax. It shows the following distribution of the tax: Manatee County, $21,529, 567; Bradenton, $3,503,462; Palmetto, $845,496; Anna Maria, $479,090.30; Bradenton Beach, $322.033; Holmes Beach, $951,424; and Longboat Key (Manatee County portion), $474,376.

In other business Benton said the city is maintaining the information board at Grassy Point and also maintaining the abandoned butterfly garden at city hall until the board decides on a plan for it.

The board will break for the summer and resume meetings on Oct. 5.

ast month, we reviewed the costs of longterm care here in Florida. Since almost 70 percent of today’s 65-year-olds are going to need some form of long-term care , it is important to have a plan to pay for the costs. For

most people, it makes the most sense to insure against it. There are three main ways to gain long-term care coverage, and it is important to understand them in order to choose the best fit for your particular situation.

1. Traditional Long-Term Care Insurance

With traditional long-term care insurance, you pay a premium in exchange for the ability to receive benefits, if they are needed. A long-term care insurance policy provides you with money to pay for qualified long-term care costs, if they are incurred. If you never

need long-term care, then you receive no benefits; it is a use-it-or-lose-it policy.

When you purchase your policy, you choose the level of insurance you want. You select the daily benefit amount for care in a nursing home and whether or not you need home care coverage as well. It is important to know the costs of long-term care services in order to elect suitable coverage amounts for your area.

You also must choose the length of time you want the benefits to be paid. Common options are one, two, three, or five years, or for your lifetime. Logically, the longer the

benefit period, the higher the premiums you will need to pay. Your policy will also indicate benefit triggers, or conditions which must exist in order to receive benefits from the insurance company. Benefits usually begin once you are unable to perform two of six activities of daily living without substantial assistance for at least 90 days, or have a cognitive impairment like Alzheimer’s. Nontax-qualified plans may have less restrictive benefit triggers. see breiter, page 15

With a traditional long-term care policy, people sometimes feel that if they buy it and don’t use it, they have wasted their money. Because of this, several hybrid products have emerged. One very popular solution is a life insurance policy with a longterm care rider. This way, if long-term care is needed, there are available funds, and if not, it isn’t wasted because it is passed on to the heirs as a life insurance benefit.

In this case, you invest in a typical cash value life insurance policy and select your long-term care coverage terms in the rider. If you end up needing long-term care coverage, it comes out of your policy’s death benefit. If you don’t spend the total benefit available, your beneficiaries will receive the balance upon your death.

If you need life insurance, getting your long-term care coverage as a rider may be a good option. This way, someone will be benefiting from the premiums you are paying, whether it is you or your heirs. If you don’t need life insurance, there is another hybrid option that may be of interest to you.

3. Annuity with a Long-Term Care Rider

If you purchase a variable annuity, you may have the option of adding a long-term care rider onto the contract.

Since 2010, the IRS allows for the longterm care benefit to be used tax-free.

First, you would purchase your annuity, then you would select the amount of long-term care coverage you want, often two to three times the face value of the annuity, as well as the length of time you want coverage.

Finally, you have to decide if you want inflation protection.

This way, you have money available to you if you need long-term care.

Otherwise, you can cash out the annuity when it matures (in which case you would lose your long-term care coverage), or let it accumulate and ultimately pass on the assets to your heirs.

Getting long-term care coverage through an annuity can be appealing because it is generally less expensive than stand-alone insurance, and you can obtain coverage without health underwriting. They tend to be less common than the other options, though, because of the current low interest rates and the large upfront investment.

Island kids and their parents are invited to join the fun at Bayfront Park on Saturday, Adams June 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as the Privateers' Snooks Adams' Kid’s Day. There will be a little pirates look-alike contest, so parents are encouraged to dress their wee ones to compete. There also will be buried treasure in the sand, rubber rat tossing, water balloon tossing, a water pistol showdown and other fun games.

The little pirates can chow down on free hot dogs and chips and wash them down

with sodas. Parents can eat too, for a donation.

In 1954, Adams, who was the first chief of police on the Island, gathered a group of boys and drove them in his Jeep to the beach. The kids played in the water and had a good time, so good that the girls were added to the fun in future celebrations.

When Adams retired in 1980, the Privateers took over and made it a larger event for all kids. The Privateers are a non-profit organization with a mission of Pirates for Kids and Community. Search for new clerk begins

ANNA MARIA – The search for Anna Maria City Clerk Diane Percycoe’s successor is underway.

Percycoe plans to retire at the end of September and move back to Rock Falls, Ill. to be close to her family.

Percycoe was named city clerk in March of 2014. She started working for the city at the beginning of 2001 as a deputy clerk. She became a certified municipal clerk in 2004 and filled the newly-created position of finance director in 2007; a position now filled

by Maggie Martinez. Percycoe also spent a few months preparing minutes for the Bradenton Beach Planning and Zoning Board while working for the city of Anna Maria.

Mayor Dan Murphy and the city commissioners discussed the search for Percycoe’s replacement at the May 26 meeting.

“This is a sad day,” said Commission Chair Doug Copeland.

“It truly is. Diane Percycoe has served the city for so many years and done such an excellent job,” Murphy said.

Murphy said the job opening would be advertised at several websites, including the Florida League of Cities and the Florida Association of City Clerks.

Murphy’s advisory panel will consist of City Attorney Becky Vose and volunteer financial consultant John Chambers, with Percycoe also providing insight and advice.

The recently revised job description for the clerk’s position says, “This position is entrusted with administrative, statutory and day-to-day functions of

the city. Must have considerable knowledge of organization, function and activities of municipal government. Must have knowledge of legal requirements, rules and procedure of various city meetings. Must establish and maintain a sense of trust and leadership, as well as having a good working relationship with the citizens of Anna Maria, the city commission and city staff.”

The job description lists 22 essential functions required of the city clerk.

These include serving as the official custodian of city records, overseeing the city’s records management program and maintaining custody of all official records not specifically handled by other departments.

The job qualifications state the clerk must be a certified municipal clerk and maintain certification as required by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. The clerk must also have a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in public administration, political science, business administration or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Applicants must have a minimum of four years municipal government experience and at least three years of managerial experience. They must have comprehensive knowledge of governmental rules and regulations, including Florida Sunshine Law; possess comprehensive computer and research skills; and be a notary of the state of Florida.

The pay range for the clerk’s position is approximately $55,000 to $75,000.

Commission approves AMOB repairs The kitchen air conditioning was replaced on Saturday, with additional repairs to follow later.

BRADENTON BEACH – Last week, City Commissioners authorized Public Works Director Tom Woodard to spend up to $70,000 on immediate and future repairs to the city-owned building leased to the Anna Maria Oyster Bar (AMOB).

The funding request was a late addition to the Thursday, June 2, agenda, driven by the fact that AMOB’s kitchen air conditioning died the previous weekend. In order to provide much-needed relief to the kitchen staff, that unit was replaced Saturday.

First discussed at the Wednesday, June 1, Pier Team meeting, the original discussion pertained to simply replacing the failed fiveton kitchen unit. It was then noted that the 10-ton unit that handles the dining room and restrooms was the same make and age of the 10-year-old kitchen unit.

This led Mayor Bill Shearon to suggest to the Pier Team that the dining room unit also be replaced in order to prevent a breakdown during the hot summer months. Woodard said he would do his best to present the city commission with three bids at Thursday’s night’s meeting.

On Thursday, Shearon asked Woodard and Pier Team Facilitator Sam Speciale to compile additional information on the cost of replacing the AMOB roof that has also been a source of concern for some time now.

During Thursday’s meeting, Shearon said Building Official Steve Gilbert estimated the

roof replacement would cost approximately $30,000. Shearon said hoped the commission would approve the funding for all three expenditures that night.

City Attorney Ricinda Perry said the lease the city entered into with Horne on Sept. 1, 2015, requires the city to absorb the cost of air-conditioning replacement for the first year, and it becomes the tenant’s responsibility after that. As AMOB’s landlord, Perry said the city remains responsible for roof repairs or roof replacement for the duration of the lease.

The commission eventually voted 4-1 to authorize an expenditure not to exceed $70,000 in order to replace the kitchen unit

immediately and the dining room unit and roof later.

Commissioner Jan Vosburgh opposed this in part because she questioned the need to replace a dining room unit that was still functioning properly. She preferred replacing the kitchen unit now and addressing the additional funding later.

During the meeting, the commission adopted on final reading a new public urination and defecation ordinance. It also approved on final reading the term limit and residency requirement ballot language that will appear on the August primary ballot.

Turtle Tips During sea turtle season, May 1 – Oct. 31, please follow these tips: • Turn off lights visible from the beach and close blinds from sundown to sunrise; lights confuse nesting sea turtles and may cause them to go back to sea and drop their eggs in the water, where they won’t hatch. Light can also attract hatchlings away from the water.

• Don’t use flashlights, light sticks, or cell phone or camera flashes on the beach at night.

• Remove all objects from the sand from sundown to sunrise; they can deter sea turtles from nesting and disorient hatchlings.

• Fill in the holes you dig in the sand before leaving the beach; they can trap nesting and hatching sea turtles, which cannot live long out of the water.

• Don’t use sky lanterns or fireworks; they litter the beach and Gulf.

• Do not trim trees and plants that shield the beach from lights.

Turtle Talk Tuesdays Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring volunteers will present a 30-minute program every Tuesday at 10 a.m. in June and July at CrossPointe Fellowship Church, 8605 Gulf Drive in Holmes Beach.

Using photos, videos and stories, volunteers will take you on a virtual tour of Anna Maria Island’s nesting beaches and answer your questions.

Participants will learn the times and locations of upcoming nest excavations, done three days after hatchlings leave the nests.

Commissioners nix B&B in R-1 The owners asked to make bed and breakfast a special exception use in the residential district.

HOLMES BEACH – City commissioners quashed the request of Robert and Elizabeth Lang that the city amend its code to adopt a bed and breakfast use category as a special exception use in R-1.

The Langs own the home at 5601 Flotilla Drive and would like to convert the residence into a bed and breakfast. The structure has seven bedrooms and six bathrooms on a .527-acre lot. It has three driveways that can park 18 cars off the street.

At the City Commission meeting on May 24, Bob Lang made a presentation reading from a nine-page document that included state regulations regarding B&Bs, definitions, examples of B&B regulations in other Florida cities, excepts from the Urban Land Institute report for the Island and suggested use standards.

“I appreciate all your work,” Chair Judy Titsworth said, “but we have zoning for bed and breakfasts, and we do have them in the resort housing district. I am not in favor of changing our zoning to allow all of R-1

to have bed and breakfasts.

“Bed and breakfasts can be used for wedding parties and create noise, and this is a residential neighborhood. This is not what we want for our city.”

Commissioner Pat Morton agreed and said, “This is not the right fit for Holmes Beach. I think it would open Pandora’s Box.” Commissioner Marvin Grossman said he asked five people living in the R-1 zoning district how they felt about having a bed and breakfast next to them and said, “They laughed at me. Not one thought I was serious. That is not the appropriate place for that.”

Bob Lang said he asked people in the community the same question and said, I have had nothing but positive responses.”

Commissioner Carol Soustek said, “A huge amount of the neighborhood would have to go along with it.”

Elizabeth Lang said, “We’re trying to create a buffer between the commercial district and residential.

We’re trying to turn our home into a bed and breakfast and embrace the growth of this city.

She said Keyes Marina is in the neighborhood, and it has a special exception and that they would like a special exception like the marina.”

City Attorney Patricia Petruff said the code does not allow for a special exception in R-1 for a bed and breakfast.

Jennifer Vermillera also owns a home near the two lots. She said her deeded dock is used by seasonal tenants and friends and family.

“There are several of us that own that property. We all pay taxes on that and we maintain it,” she said of the seawall, docks and the strip of grass that provides for parking.

Robinson suggested the hearing be continued so Norman could discuss these options with the property owner and provide a more detailed diagram of the proposed Lot 29 dock.

A variance approval recommended by the special master now requires the four-fifths supra-majority support of the City Commission in order to be approved.

They want everybody to be part of the 2016 ceremony, a visible reminder to Congress that they need to do more to fight cancer.

vivors, caregivers, cancer advocates and lawmakers will reflect and give remarks. This event will raise awareness and help us in our fight to make cancer a national priority. Last year there were over 20,000 bags around the pool and spelling Hope and Cure up the capitol steps making a huge statement to those in Congress.

Hope bags are a $10 donation to ACS CAN. Funds raised through Lights of Hope enable ACS CAN to continue its mission to make cancer a national priority with legislators.

oy, time sure does fly. Here it is, June already, and it doesn't seem like it has slowed down a bit. On top of that, holidays are right around the corner, and we're starting to hear from friends and family about their vacations. I guess that's one of the downfalls of living in paradise!

I did have a nice surprise a couple of weeks back when I got an e-mail from an old high school cohort. Come to find out, in the 30 plus years I haven't seen him, he got married and bought a house in Colorado, the last place I saw him. He and his wife were going to visit her family on the east coast near Daytona before going on a fossil expedition while visiting the Venice Sharks Tooth Festival.

We made plans to get together on their way there, meet each others' better halves and do some reminiscing. Not knowing the couple that well, I wasn't sure as to what to offer them as a beverage. As fate would have it, they brought along a gift of a nice bottle of wine. We spent a pleasant afternoon talking about old times over glasses of a delicious rosé from Charles and Charles.

This young 2015 wine from Columbia Valley in Washington State was refreshing as could be. It offered crisp strawberry citrus flavors with good minerality and great acidity. We were all pleasantly surprised at how well the wine washed down our steamed shrimp. It made for a fun afternoon. Going forward I should consider keeping a couple of bottles of

rosé around for upcoming occasions.

We just enjoyed Memorial Day week with the family here, but that story is better suited to a beer column. As expected, it was a really busy week, so we decided to plan ahead a little better for our next celebration, Fathers Day. With over 70 million dads in the U.S., that alone is a good reason to plan ahead.

Given a choice by our kids or asking our own fathers what they would like to do usually leads to the same answer – eating and drinking.

If you opt to go to your favorite restaurant, make your reservations early or arrive early if you can't reserve a table.

The other favorite option is usually a cookout. It's pretty hard to beat a grilled

burger, steak or a filet of fresh fish. Pair it up with a nice bottle of wine and a couple of your favorite side dishes and you're all set.

Here are a couple of suggestions for that holiday cookout. If it's really hot you might throw some grapes or other appropriate fruit, be it berries or cherries, in the freezer to drop in your glass of wine to keep it chilled. Another suggestion – any time you have leftover wine pour it into an ice cube tray and then put the frozen cubes in a baggie. Whenever you need wine for a recipe use your cubes – it will save you from opening another good bottle of wine for your sauce if you're not planning on drinking that wine. Usually three cubes equals about ½ cup.

Whisk cornstarch and coconut milk together in small saucepot, making sure to smooth out all the chunks. Bring to a simmer over medium low heat. Once it achieves a simmer it will thicken(slurry). Set aside to cool. Add berries, cilantro, and other ingredients to a blender to blend smooth. You may leave chunky if that’s your style.

As far as picking your wines, always remember your food and wine basics ~ delicate with delicate, bold with bold. A humble meal goes best with a humble wine, whereas a rich, fatty rib roast might call for that elegant burgundy. A delicate piece of white fish might go well with a nice sauvignon blanc, but a rich, buttery sauce might require a more acidic wine to cleanse your palate. The same goes for pairing a grilled burger, maybe with a zinfandel or a blended wine, as opposed to that bone in ribeye steak paired with an elegant malbec or cabernet sauvignon.

The other option, going to your favorite restaurant, allows you to pick that meal and wine together, and you can even ask for suggestions. Until next time...

Fly fishing for tarpon T

he tarpon that frequent our beaches during the months of May through August provide an enticing target for fly anglers. These armor clad warriors can weigh in at over 200 pounds, and the average fish will run from 80 to 100 pounds. That’s why fly fishing guides describe the experience as the “Apex of Angling.”

Some of the best tarpon fishing in the world can be experienced on our nearshore bars and inshore waters. Fishing for tarpon on the fly isn’t a game of numbers, it’s the hunt and the eye to eye action that keep anglers on the bow.

Fly tackle should match the quarry, so fly anglers intent on landing one opt for a 12-weight outfit and 70- to 80pound bite tippet. While it might seem like a difficult task to land a tarpon on a fly rod, anglers knowing the limits of their tackle can actually land a tarpon in a surprisingly short time. The key is to apply maximum pressure from the hookup and never let up. Many beginning fly anglers baby their tarpon in a misguided attempt to land them. In actuality, the longer you fight tarpon the better the chance of losing them.

A properly tied tarpon leader usually runs between 10 and 12 feet and

The class tippet, about 18 inches of 16to 20-pound test, is followed by the bite tippet to which the fly is tied. The best knot is a non-slip mono loop.

While many anglers use 80 to 100 pound test for the bite tippet, you’ll get more bites with 50-70 pound test. Flies vary from the classic splayed feather Key’s style to more complex designs like the Toad. There are lots of YouTube videos available with directions on how to tie leaders and flies. It’s also critical to have a very sharp hook as tarpon have extremely tough mouths.

The key to enticing tarpon to the fly is accuracy. The fly must be placed perfectly, move in a precise direc-

Patience is paramount when fly fishing for tarpon. The most successful anglers anchor near the edge of a sandbar or other underwater feature that tarpon track and wait. Sometimes tarpon come at a steady rate, but just as often, there are long periods of time when the only thing to look at is the water and the bottom. This really separates the great anglers from the average. There are times when you need to move, but knowing when and where is a skill that is developed buy never mastered.

Once set up, the angler must be able to make a 40- to 50-foot cast to a location the size of a dinner plate. Placement of the fly cannot be overemphasized because tarpon will seldom vary a foot or two from their path to eat a fly. Although there is always the rare exception, a fly must never travel in a path towards the intended target. A tarpon’s prey species wouldn’t survive long if it moves towards them, and the tarpon know it. Tarpon tactics Captain Rick Grassett

I have been off the water for the last couple of weeks, so I don’t have a local fishing report. However, tarpon fishing has been strong in Sarasota as schools of fish have increased in size and numbers during that time frame. Tarpon will head offshore to spawn on this weekend’s new moon and will return to the beach within a few days as singles, doubles and smaller schools giving fly anglers good opportunities.

Use tackle heavy enough to land them as quickly as possible. When using conventional tackle, I use 7-foot, 30- to 40-pound class spinning rods and Quantum Boca or Cabo 60 reels with 50-pound Power Pro braid. According to Florida law, tarpon longer than 40 inches must remain in the water.

Dragging a tarpon up onto the gunnel of your boat could damage internal organs and result in its death. After landing a tarpon, it should be properly revived by pulling it slowly alongside your boat to move

water through their gills until it is strong enough to swim away.

I travel well offshore of the beach at first light in the morning to avoid disturbing schools of tarpon that may be traveling or laid up close to the beach.

Once I’ve reached the area I intend to fish, I’ll ease into the beach with an electric trolling motor and set up in my spot, either anchoring or drifting, depending on conditions. Set up in travel lanes along the beach and cast live crabs, baitfish, DOA Baitbusters and Swimming Mullet to them. The new CAL 4-inch Shad Tail with an Owner Beast 6/0 weedless hook is a good tarpon lure, especially when sight fishing in shallow water. I often drift a couple of live baits under a float while waiting for tarpon schools to pass by.

When fly fishing, I use 12-weight rods and large arbor reels capable of holding at least 300 yards of backing and cast a variety of baitfish, shrimp or crab fly patterns fished on floating or intermediate sink

tip fly lines. The shallower the water, the easier it is to get your fly in front of a fish when fly fishing. Stake out or anchor in travel lanes to get shots at them. Give other anglers at least 200-yards of space. Since fish may be moving both north and south, setting up too close to another angler may negatively affect their fishing.

Snook season is closed now on the west coast of Florida, but catch and release night snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW or in the surf with flies and DOA Lures should also be good. Look for reds, snook and big trout mixed with mullet schools or cruising shallow flats and edges of bars in Sarasota Bay or backcountry areas of Charlotte Harbor and lower Tampa Bay. Trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and more should be good options on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. see captains, page 26

Perico wins award The National Association of Environmental Professionals has bestowed an award on the Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department for the newly-opened Perico Preserve on Manatee Avenue in west Bradenton.

A smartphone application that will identify the location of red tide in the Gulf of Mexico and forecast its movement is under development.

A project of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System, Mote Marine Laboratory and the Florida Department of Health, the app will use smartphones to collect videos of water samples that can be uploaded to a server for evaluation. Results and forecasts will be available almost immediately to government and research institutions focused on public health and natural resources.

A three-year, $1.1 million grant from NASA is funding the project.

Red tide can kill fish, make shellfish inedible and make people sick, especially those with respiratory problems.

The city-owned day dock adjacent to the Historic Bridge Street Pier in Bradenton Beach now features a designated short-term unloading and loading zone for recreational and commercial vessels. The newly designated area establishes a 15-minute time limit for docking at the east end of the public dock. The time limit does not apply to the rest of the day dock.

tracking it. Conversely, you can’t move the fly too fast, taking it out of a tarpon’s range.

If all this wasn’t demanding enough, once a tarpon decides to eat the fly the real test of an angler’s mettle is tested.

Tarpon are not trout, and attempting to raise the rod to set the hook is a fatal mistake. Fortunately, once a tarpon decides to eat the fly there’s no need to make a lighting fast hook set.

The right set is called a strip strike, which involves letting the line come tight and immediately setting the hook with a combination of the line hand and the rod.

After the initial hook set, attention must directed immediately to clearing the loose line from the deck. In most cases, the angler has been stripping in line when the fish eats the fly.

That line can easily foul on the angler, the rod or the reel. The drill is to take your attention from the fish to the line at your feet. Hold the rod away from your body and let the excess line pass through your stripping hand in a circle made with the thumb and the forefinger. Once the line is on the reel, set the hook with several more strip strikes.

It’s critical to apply maximum pressure to the tarpon during the fight, yielding only on jumps when the angler thrusts

the rod forward to relieve pressure on the line. This prevents the tarpon from breaking off if it lands on a tight line. This maneuver is known as “bowing to the king.”

It’s customary to start the engine and get as close to the tarpon as possible after the initial and subsequent long runs.

This allows the angler to apply maximum pressure. If a tarpon is 100 yards from the boat, the stretch of the line makes it impossible to apply any real pressure.

If you’re looking for a good jump shot here’s a great tip.

When a tarpon makes any long run, motor to it, applying only enough pressure to make sure the hook doesn’t dislodge. As soon as you are in place, frame the shot you want and then have the angler apply maximum pressure. Most times, the tarpon will make a jump that’s close enough to the boat to get the angler and the fish in the shot. It’s not a sure thing, but when it works, it can present an awesome photographic opportunity.

Finally don’t try and rush the tarpon when it gets near the end of the fight. Keep the pressure on, but don’t clamp down and try to force the fish to the boat. Tarpon on the fly is a challenging endeavor, but it’s well worth the effort when you finally get that first fish boat side for a photograph.

Annie Bait & Tackle customers reported the trout were biting like crazy before the anticipated arrival of a tropical storm early this week.

With help from deck hand Matt Smith, Kevin Bridges caught a nice sailfish last week using live shiner as bait when fishing with Captain Sam Kimball in 100 feet of water off of Anna Maria. The sailfish was released after being reeled in and photographed. Captain Kimball also reported some nice red grouper being caught in the 10-20 pound range. American red snapper are hard to get right now, but the few caught were in the 15-18 pound range. Mangrove and lane snapper rounded out his trips last week.

Captain Scott Moore says the snook are off the beaches. Trout are biting well around the passes.

Bluefish are at the mouth of the river, and redfish are in the river.

Waterside art on display The Florida Maritime Museum, 4415 119th St. W., in Cortez, hosts “Living by Water” featuring sculptures by local artist Steve Humphrey. Humphrey’s works are abstractions of images inspired by fish, fishing and boating. The sculptures are made from wood, metal, rope and fiber and are meant to provoke humor, intrigue and an appreciation of life around the water. Humphrey is an artist, designer and builder and has worked with his hands his entire life. The exhibit will remain on display through Friday, Aug. 12.

Paving project to consider sea level rise The mayor to enter into an agreement with Superior Asphalt, Inc. for paving.

HOLMES BEACH – City Engineer Lynn Burnett recommended at the May 24 City Commission meeting that streets not be milled any longer when repaving is done due to sea level rise.

“FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) estimates a 20-inch rise

in the next 100 years,” she explained.

“Even if it’s half that, we’re in deep water, pardon the pun, unless we take measures to accommodate that.”

She said state and federal legislation is coming next year that will require cities to adopt sea level rise ordinances, and that drainage system the city is installing is designed to accommodate sea level rise.

“The nature of the drainage design that we have is such that as we come in every 10 to 15 years and do maintenance on these filtration systems, we

can add layers to the stone, and people can bring in material to raise their yards,” she said.

City commissioners agreed to strike references to milling and authorized the mayor to enter into an agreement with Superior Asphalt, Inc. for paving the following streets: • Holmes Boulevard from Gulf Drive to the north side of 66th Street; • Holmes Boulevard from the north side of 66th Street to the north side of Clark Drive; • 56th Street from Marina to Flo-

tilla drives; • Gulf Drive from Carissa to Guava streets; • Gulf Drive from the 5600 block to the 6000 block; • Sixth Avenue from Manatee Avenue to Gulf Drive.

The first one listed will be done in 2016 at a cost of $80,000 and the rest will be done in 2017 at a cost of $148,195.

Burnett said the city got a good price because it was negotiated for all three cities.

Corner lot ordinance approved The ordinance will give relief to owners of lots with two, three and four front yards.

HOLMES BEACH – City commissioners approved on May 24 an ordinance to give relief to some corner lot owners.

The issue came to the city’s attention when a couple attempted to build a house on their lot with three front yards.

The ordinance states: • No more than two front yards shall be required on any lot or parcel of record.

• On a lot or parcel facing on three streets, the owner may choose which street shall be the designated front yard.

The yard opposite the designated front yard shall be the rear yard for setback purposes.

• For lots fronting on four or more streets, the owner may choose which street shall be the designated front yard.

The yard opposite the designated front yard shall be the rear yard. One of the remaining yards shall be a side yard for setback purposes and the other shall be the secondary front yard.

The ordinance includes provisions for grandfathering legally platted lots where a structure was constructed when only one street yard was required.

Commissioners also instructed the city planner to draft an ordinance allowing encroachments such as air conditioning units, generators and heat pumps in secondary front yards.

The old fencing at Herb Dolan Park has been removed and replaced by new fencing.

Park improvements forthcoming A work crew began installing the new fencing at Herb Dolan Park last week after three Australian pines were removed and the remaining pines were trimmed in order to provide a better view of the bay.

These improvements to the city park in Bradenton Beach will soon be followed by the installation of a new crosswalk on 25th Street North that will connect the primary recreation area and the children’s playground across the street. New stop signs will be installed on 25th Street North and

Avenue A in order to slow traffic approaching the crosswalk.

City commissioners recently considered spending $5,000 to install speed tables near the crosswalk, but decided to try the more cost-effective stop signs first.

The commission also decided not to expand the existing pickleball court that sits atop a portion of the basketball courts. Some residents had expressed concerns about additional pickleball courts attracting tournament-style play that would bring more noise and traffic to the neighborhood.

The Island Branch Library at 5701 Marina Drive

has a schedule of free programs that will get the kids out of the sun and keep the learning wheels spinning.

All of the classes will be held at the library on Thursday, at 10 a.m. The schedule is: • June 16, Magic and Mayhem, from Orlando, a show that mixes magic with comedy with audience participation; • June 23, Katie Adams, from Tampa, entertains with her puppet show. She has appeared at the library and at Anna Maria Elementary school before; • June 30, Jiggle Man, a funny program featuring

big rubber balls and funny costumes that do funny things as people wear them; • July 7, Surapsuri, a Japanese dance demonstration; • July 14, Tampa Taiko, a Japanese drumming performance; • July 21, Wonders of Nature Traveling Wildlife Show, Kids get to see unique animals up close.

Colin leaves soggy Island in its wake The hurricane season got off to an early start with Tropical Storm Colin.

ANNA MARIA ISLAND – Island residents, visitors and city officials were plagued by flooded streets, water seeping into low-lying homes, anchored vessels breaking free, a dinghy dock underwater and at least one leaking roof that caused residents to evacuate, but there were no serious injuries or life-threating incidents reported as Tropical Storm Colin passed through Monday afternoon.

“We train to respond to these type of storms. We had our plans in place and we were in communication with the Manatee County Emergency Operations Center,” said Bradenton Beach Police Chief Sam Speciale, while touring the city during high tide, which arrived around 12:45 p.m. on Monday.

“You plan for the worst but you never know what’s going to happen. We were as ready as we could be,” Speciale added, while driving down a flooded Avenue A, where water was intruding some of the homes in that area.

Near the Bridge Tender Inn, along Bay Drive South, the high tide produced small waves and standing water in the road. Nearby, the city’s dinghy dock was underwater, with several dinghys tied to it and floating safely above. At the day dock, two sailboats and a cabin cruiser were tied up after breaking free or becoming in danger of breaking free from their anchors in the nearby anchorage.

Earlier in the day, a Coast Guard crew rescued three people from a houseboat that was sinking in rough water just south of the Historic Bridge Street Pier. Lifeguards from Manatee County Marine Rescue were also called to the scene for potential medical assistance, but none was needed, as the three mariners were safely placed ashore by the Coast Guard without injury, according to Marine Rescue officials.

Bradenton Beach City Commissioner Jake Spooner reported having whitecaps in his front yard earlier in the day, and the flag pole at city hall was toppled by strong winds. Gusts of up to 50 mph were reported at the Bradenton Beach Police Department Monday morning.

In Holmes Beach, there was significant flooding on Marina Drive, near city hall, the library and Keyes Marina, which forced motorists, pedestrians

and bicyclists to proceed through the high water with caution. There was also significant street flooding just north of Anna Maria Elementary School, which was only school in the county that closed for the entire day.

At the north end of the Island, Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy said there was some flooding on Fern Street, but he wasn’t aware of anything too serious going on.

“It looks like we came through it OK, but there might be more to come.”

The two piers in the city of Anna Maria remained closed Monday. Anna Maria Public Works Director George McKay said he and City Pier restaurant Manager Dave Sork talked Money morning and agreed it would be in the best interest of the public not to open it. The Rod and Reel restaurant was closed all day as well. The Rod and Reel Pier is a privately owned public facility. After a relatively calm afternoon, the hard rains began falling again at around 3:30 p.m.

Around that same time, Anna Maria Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring Executive Director Suzi Fox was asked if the storm was having an effect on sea turtle nests.

“It is and it has. I don’t know the exact numbers yet, but we’ve had a lot of washouts of nests,” Fox said. “We’ll have a better assessment of the situation on Tuesday. But we do know we’ve lost a lot of eggs.

People are finding eggs on the beach, floating in water, and they should not touch them.”

Fox added that it is illegal for the public to handle turtle eggs.

Rain again was in the forecast for Tuesday.

Underdogs find victory at The Center

Each sports season at the Center, new teams are created and new coaches commit to growing their players. This mixing up of old friends with new players is the on-going tradition of the Island recreational sports program. It takes practices, games and time for a newly formed team to gel. Often times, it takes the whole season.

For the volunteer coaches, trying to figure out the best positions for each of their players, despite where they may have played in the past, requires fine-tuning and tweaking each game. This, while making sure each player gets playing time and touches the ball, can make for a long and sometimes losing season.

But, when it all comes together, the victory is so sweet. This past week two teams in the Center’s youth soccer league experience this feeling. Their hard work and dedication paid off. The underdogs got that all important win.

The quarterfinal game on Wednesay, June 1, in the 8-to 10-year-old league was a battle royale for the remaining spot in the semifinals. In a rare occurrence, both teams were coached by the wonderful moms of the players – Ester Mattick for Team John Demato PA and Lindy Gilbert for Team Lux Carts.

Coach Gilbert entered the playoff game without a win in the regular season hoping that the underdog could once again get their bone.

Team John Demato PA’s Jackson Pakbaz immediately showed his excellent ball handling skills dribbling the ball down the field.

Teammate Audrey Robuck was defensively strong against Lux Carts’ Jiles Kirkland, stopping his breakaway.

Frankie Coleman and Kyle Samuels both played hard against the Lux Cart, looking to help take their team to the semifinal game.

Kirkland took a shot that would have put his team on the scoreboard, but Michael Coleman handled the shot like a pro for Team John Demato PA. After the goal attempt Lawson Francis fought for position on the field for Lux Carts, but the opponent’s defense was just too tough. With Fiona McCarthy in goal and Team John Demato PA on offense quickly approaching the goal to score, Lux Carts’ Gabriella Gilbert made the stop and cleared the ball.

With eight minutes left in the first half, Phillipe Baumgartner scored the first goal of the game moving Team John Demato PA ahead 1-0.

To the encouragement of their coach, Team Lux Carts continued to play hard.

As the speed of the game picked up and the first half grew closer to an end, Jack Mattick smartly swept the ball out of bounds to prevent the shot by Team Lux Carts.

Team John Demato PA switched up its line up with Brian Gallihers in the goal to end the first half. Both teams held their ground on the field to end the half.

The second half of play saw Samuels and McCarthy in goal. Mattick started tough by taking the ball down the field for Team John Demato PA. McCarthy had a nice save stopping the ball with her feet and quick reaction.

Lux Carts continued to play tough with defensive clears by Kieran Cloutier and support by Lawson Francis. Team John Demato PA never quit, as it did all season with the help of teammates Rylan Guerrero and Karaline Berzowski.

With less than five minutes left in the first playoff game of the night, Pakbaz took the ball all the way down the field to score the winning goal for Lux Carts. Capturing its first win and the last slot in the semifinals, Team Lux Cart got there as a team, including players that were not able to play in this nail bitter – Grayson Mitchell, Victor

Albrecht and Angelina Albrecht.

The story of the underdog continued last week. In the 11-to 13-year-old league, Team Sugar Beach Digital finished the regular season with a 2-4-1 record. What the record does not show is the clear parity in the league. Each of Sugar Beach Digital’s regular season losses were close battles on the field. Pulling it all together, the team won their semi-final game against Team Beach Bums in the heat of the late afternoon.

Literally sweating it out again, Sugar Beach Digital faced the top team in the league on Saturday in the Championship Game. After 40 minutes of great soccer, Sugar Beach Digital defeated Team Coldwell Banker 4-2, with goals by Nicholas Cavalluzzi, David Daigle and Tuna McCracken for the victors. The two bullet goals for Coldwell Banker by Tyler Brewer were just unstoppable.

The morale to the story and the life lesson to be learned at the Center – just keep playing hard and playing your best because any given game your team can be the victor despite what the record may show.

Moose Queen still hides The weekly Queen of Hearts drawing taking place at the Anna Maria Moose Lodge on Wednesday nights has yet to produce a jackpot winner, even though more than half of the 54 playing cards have been drawn and discarded. According to Lodge Administrator Ernie Casali, a queen was recently found, but it was the Queen of Clubs, which produced a consolation prize of $4,000. The total jackpot for the June 8 drawing will be $80,610 and the bulk of that would go to one person if the envelope associated with their winning ticket contains the elusive Queen of Hearts. As consolation prizes, pulling the Ace of Spades is now worth $5,000 and any card pulled is worth at least $2,000.

No April real estate showers I

f there were rain showers during April, they sure didn’t have an effect on the real estate market. According to the April sales statistics published by the Realtor Association of Sarasota and Manatee, sale prices are considerably up.

The median sale price of single-family homes (half above and half below) was up 8.9 percent from last April to $279,300. The average sale price for single-family homes was up 13.4 percent to $353,456. Closed sales were almost exactly the same with 534 closing during April of this year, and properties are selling at 94.7 percent of the list price.

The condo market also is up with the median sale price up 14.1 percent from April of last year to $165,500 and the average sales price up 58 percent to $311,127 (this number probably includes some high end condos that sold and likely will readjust next month).

Closed sales are also up 12.1 percent to

Castles in the Sand Louise Bolger 306 in April of this year, and properties are selling at 94.3 percent of list price similar to single family homes.

The increase in sale prices is also happening in Sarasota County where the median single family home prices were up 12.6 percent. Across the country, the number of sales of existing homes also rose in April by 1.7 percent according to the National Association of Realtors, and the median sale price for a previously owned home was up 6.3 percent to $232,500 from last year.

Generally, the real estate market right here in Manatee County, as well as across

the country, continues to get stronger.

Much of this has to do with advantageous interest rates, which averaged 3.61 percent in April for a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage, which was the lowest monthly average since May of 2013. Even with the Federal Reserve indicating an increase in the prime rate during June, it appears that the housing market isn’t likely to be upset.

And there is more good news as reported by the Bradenton Herald. The new U.S. Census Bureau data indicates that North Port and Bradenton are among the fastest growing cities in Florida. North Port ranks 4th and Bradenton ranks 6th, placing North Port at number 41 overall in the country and Bradenton at 46. Between 2014 and 2015, North Port’s population increased by about 2,000 and Bradenton’s by more than 1,600. Overall, Manatee County grew by more than 11,500 residents in one year and by almost 40,000 people since 2010. On the other hand, the three cities

on Anna Maria Island saw little growth.

The three Anna Maria cities and Longboat Key grew only by 288 people.

In addition, the unemployment rate has dropped in both Manatee and Sarasota counties. The Manatee County rate went from 4.3 percent to 4.1 percent from March to April and the Sarasota County rate also dropped from 4.4 percent to 4.3 percent. This is better than the state of Florida rate drop which changed from 4.9 percent to 4.8 percent.

The national unemployment rate was at 5 percent in both March and April of this year, a slight increase from January’s and February’s rate of 4.9 percent.

With new construction permits up about 10 percent, only about a 4 and a half months’ supply of homes available on the market and a low unemployment rate, it’s no wonder our population is increasing. Economics 101 supply and demand will bring out the May flowers.

Summer camp fun at The Center

Summer camp starts June 13 at The Center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria. Summer My Way for children going into kindergarten through fifth grade offers Sports Camp, Discovery Camp or Specialty Camps. Children will get to go on an adventure with a weekly field trip.

Discovery Camp is craft based and designed for children who enjoy being creative.

Children will experience hands-on projects, art projects, gardening and others things to help them discover the world around them.

Sports Camp is a non-stop, fun filled sports extravaganza. Campers will learn new games and new techniques and also will work on teamwork and sportsmanship. If your child is attending Surf Camp, The Center offers pick up for afternoon fun at The Center.

The Center also offers the following Specialty Camps: Fishing Camp, June 13-17; Sailing Camp, June 20-23 and July 11-14 and

Drama Camp, July 11-21.

The first of these is fishing camp on June 13 through17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Bayfront Park pavilion. The Center is partnering with Chasten Whitfield who is an avid young angler who has a passion to teach young children how to become more advanced anglers.

Students will learn how to throw a cast net, cast a rod, tie knots, bait hooks and much more. This camp is for children 5 to 12 years old and the cost is $115 per member and $125 for non-members. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited.

For Summer My Way campers, Sports and Discovery camps run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Specialty Camps will run in the mornings and will cost additional fees. Registration is required by the Thursday prior.

Services return to Roser’s chapel Roser Memorial Community Church, at 512 Pine Ave., Anna Maria, has begun using the historic chapel for its 8:30 a.m.

Sunday worship service. It also holds services at 10 a.m. in the main part of the church.

The 103-year-old church began when Charles Roser, businessman and inventor of the Fig Newton cookie, built it in honor of his parents, who had passed on.

His father, John, had expressed a desire to see a church on the sparsely populated island that would serve the needs of all the people living and visiting here.

Captain Mitch Davis built the church and it was dedicated in 1913.

The Chapel still stands, welcoming all who enter for reflection and prayer.

Chappie joins first-time candidate Bill Vincent in the Ward 4 race. Vincent filed his preliminary candidacy paperwork in March. To date, the retired Michigan native and Pines Trailer Park resident has already received $1,014 in campaign contributions.

Vincent purchased his home in the Pines in 2007 and became a registered city voter in 2011. He served on many volunteer boards while living in Michigan and was recently appointed to the city’s Scenic W.A.V.E.S Committee.

When asked about Chappie’s decision, Vincent said, “It has been rumored for some time that Mr. Chappie was considering running, so it comes as no surprise.”

In regard to Chappie’s experience at the city and county levels, Vincent said, “I have no doubt he did a fine job. I am not running or campaigning against Mr. Chappie or any other person. My candidacy is based on my experience and what I will bring to the commission and the city.”

In Bradenton Beach, the qualifying period for the November elections opens on Monday, June 20 and closes on Friday, June 24.

Local reaction

“I’m thrilled that John Chappie is running. He would bring great experience to the commission, and he is very dedicated to our city,” Vosburgh said of her possible replacement.

Mayor Bill Shearon said, “I welcome all candidates. The more the better, and that way the voters have an opportunity to choose.”

The homeowner said she doesn’t keep anything of value in her car. The deputy checked for fingerprints and made sure the doors to her house were secure.

5/21, domestic disturbance, 100 block of Pine Avenue. A man and woman who live together as a couple, got into an argument. There was no violence so the deputy took no further action, and they left for their home in Hillsborough County.

5/21, theft, 200 block of Gladiolus Street.

Kayaks valued at $400 were taken from the yard.

5/29, noise complaint, Freckled Fin,,101 Bridge Street, noise complaint. The officer checked out a complaint about the loud music at the bar and wrote the manager a citation.

5/29. Disorderly intoxication, resisting a law enforcement officer with violence, exposure of sexual organs, 135 Bridge Street.

The officers were dispatched to the Bridge Tender Inn in reference to a drunken person causing a disturbance.

Upon arrival, they found the suspect standing in a small dinghy at the shoreline, yelling obscenities to the outdoor seating area patrons. An officer yelled to the suspect to cease, but he yelled obscenities at the officer. He then exposed his sexual organ and started to urinate. As the officers tried to gain control of the suspect, he swung his fist at one of them. He was taken to the ground, and they finally pepper sprayed him to gain control. He was cleaned up and taken to jail.

5/29, city code violation, Cortez Beach, 300 Gulf Drive South. The officer observed a pickup truck go onto the beach and

get stuck in the sand. The driver said she made a wrong turn. The truck had to be towed out.

5/30, information, Drift in, 120 Bridge Street. There was a fight, but nobody wanted to press charges.

5/31, information, 2400 block of Avenue C. The officer was flagged down by a man who had been cut on his arm. While the officer talked to the man, a woman jumped from a balcony to the ground, injuring herself. The officer called for EMS. The man said he was cut by the woman who was trying to cut herself.

The landlord said he was evicting the couple They checked the apartment and found no damage so no charges were filed.

6/1, defrauding an inn keeper, Island Time Bar and Grill, 111 Gulf Drive South.

The officer responded to a call from the owner about a woman customer in a wheelchair who refused to pay for a meal she ate. She said she didn’t have any money and knew she would be going to jail. The owner had the officer issue a trespass warning to her, and the officer filed a request for the state attorney’s office to investigate.

Holmes Beach

5/21, domestic violence, 6200 block of Holmes Boulevard. A juvenile and her foster mother got into an argument, but there was no violence. They were scheduled to fly back home in the early morning and promised there would be no more trouble. The officers took no further action.

5/21, child abuse, neglect, 65th Street beach. The officer answered a call of an assault and found there was no assault. Instead, he spoke to four women who claimed the suspect had tried to force a child to swim in the Gulf, but the child resisted. One of the women grabbed the child as he and the suspect came back to shore. They said the man was guilty of neglect because he did not care that the woman had the child.

A second officer arrived and took statements from the females. They decided to go to the police station with the

child, the foster parent and the women.

The talked with a Child Protective Services officer who said it sounded like the women were overly concerned as the child was not hurt and was presently in a good mood. No further action was taken.

5/21, larceny/theft, 4000 Gulf Drive, Manatee Public Beach parking lot. The victim parked her car and went to the beach and when she arrived back an hour later, two windows were broken out of her car, and her purse was missing.

5/23, burglary, 100 block of 79th Street.

The officer noticed two male juveniles on bikes and recognized one who was wanted for a bicycle theft. He turned his patrol car around and as he did, the two juveniles stated to flee on their bikes. The officer got on the radio, and other police officers joined in the search. They were able to catch one, and when the officer asked him about the earlier bicycle theft, he denied stealing the bike he was riding, saying a woman gave him permission to ride the bike. Later, he changed his story about a male letting him ride the bike. The officer noticed a sticker on the bike for a bicycle sales outlet in Bradenton. The person there said they did not keep track of who buys bikes. When she learned the bike model, she said it was very expensive and found out the identification of the owner. The owner was contacted, and he found out he was missing that one and another bike. A witness said the other juvenile was riding it, and he ditched it at Tiffany Place condominium. The officer went to the beachfront condos and found the other bike. The owner identified the bikes as his. The suspect in custody requested a parent be present for post-Miranda questioning. The officer charged him with theft because he could not decide whether a male or female gave him permission to ride the bike. Police later added a charge of burglary since the thieves had to enter the building where the bikes were located to steal them.

5/24, larceny, resisting arrest without violence, 4000 Gulf Drive, AMI Beach Café. Police were dispatched to the café on a report from a code enforcement unit that a juvenile had stolen the tip jar from the counter. An employee was chasing him to near the Publix store. He was spotted near the Bank of America, and he tried to run away from the officer and code enforcement employee. The officer finally caught up after a lengthy chase and handcuffed him. He found the tip jar and got affidavits. The tip jar contained $37.15.

5/24, driving with a suspended license, 600 block of Manatee Avenue. The officer spotted a Hummer and ran a random computer check, finding out the owner’s license was suspended for non-payment of child support. He was given a citation and a court date.

5/24, DUI, 5200 block of Gulf Drive. The officer followed the suspect vehicle that had no headlights on at 11:08 p.m.

He also saw the right tires go into the bike lane. He turned on his red lights and the suspect pulled over. The officer noticed signs of possible intoxication and asked the suspect how much he had drunk. He said two beers as he watched the hockey game at a bar. He agreed to take a field sobriety test and based on the results, the officer arrested him.

5/26, domestic battery, 6900 block of Gulf Drive. A witness called to say he had seen a man on the beach shove a woman as they argued. The officer arrived and located a man and woman, who was holding a child. The man said he had borrowed his wife’s phone and saw a text message indicating she was cheating on him. He got angry and took the phone and she shoved him.

The man had taken the battery out of the cell phone, and the SM card, and when they were reinstalled, she played a recording of their argument. The witness refused to sign an affidavit, but the officer placed the man under arrest.
