Cortez property sells for $10 million

CORTEZ – A businessman with Cortez roots has purchased one of the largest undeveloped parcels of waterfront property in Cortez for $10 million.

The canalfront 17.8-acre Hunter’s Hill, including the HH Marina at 12444 Cortez Road W., is planned as a vacation motor coach resort and marina, said Eric Tupin Grimes, 36, president of Florida Land Enterprises, a partnership with Marshall Gobuty, who is developing the Mirabella Grimes subdivision in Bradenton’s Village Green.

Visitors can store their boats at the marina, which is connected by canal to the Intracoastal Waterway accessible under a 14-foot-high bridge, he said, adding that he plans to expand dry dock storage.

“The marina will stay old school,” he said. “It reminds me of sitting on the docks with my grandfather, Frank Tupin.” see cortez, page 17

The replacement project for the Anna Maria Island Bridge along Manatee Avenue has entered a new phase, and so has the fight to keep it a working drawbridge.

The much-contested project that will replace the 60-year-old drawbridge with a fixed-span bridge with a 65-foot vertical clearance is set for the design phase.

This project goes back 25 years to when the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) came to the Island cities and stated they were going to replace the drawbridge with a high, fixed-span bridge. The regional FDOT director said it was a “done deal.” see SAM, page 24

BRADENTON BEACH – The Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce introduces a festival that changes the way people think about those food trucks that show up on construction sites at lunch time.

The Beach ’N Food Truck and Music Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, at Coquina Beach. It is a celebration of music, food trucks and arts and crafts.

There is something for everybody at this inaugural event. There will be live music all day, a huge car show, beer, wine, Margaritas, rum coolers and other beverages. The little ones will enjoy the Kids' Zone, and there will be an assortment of arts and crafts booths.

The food trucks and their offerings include: • The Surf & Turf Truck featuring lobster rolls, salmon burgers, steak sandwiches and shrimp tacos; • Traveling Kitchen/TK Grill featuring roast pork, grilled chicken, break-

fast burritos and black beans and rice; • Kona Ice – frozen shaved flavored ice treats; • Tropi Coco – coconut water served from actual coconuts and coconut smoothies; • Croz’s Surf Shack – rice bowls, specialty hot dogs, tacos and more; • Pasta Bowl Food Truck featuring alfredo, pesto and bolognese pastas, caprese paninis, muffaletta sandwiches, meatball sliders, cannoli, cappuccino, espresso and more; • Polpo Pizza Company – wood fired pizza served from a custom food truck; • Skinny’s Place Curbside serving its famous burgers; • South Philly cheesesteak; • Traveling Kitchen- barbecue; • Angry Mikes – seafood gumbo, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and wraps.

Mike Sales will emcee the music, which includes The JPs, Billy Rice Band, Whiskey Blind, soulRcoaster and Karen & Jimmy Band.

Admission is free, and there will be plenty of parking. If you can, take the free Island Trolley and let the trolley driver deal with the traffic.

Easter fun in Anna Maria Kids need to bring their own Easter baskets to use in the Easter Egg Hunt on the beach.

ANNA MARIA – The Sandbar restaurant, Pine Avenue Restoration and the Anna Maria Island Sun have a program of Easter fun for kids and adults on Saturday, March 26.

It begins with the 30th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the beach next to the Sandbar restaurant. The hunt starts at 9 a.m. sharp. Plan on leaving home early because there could be lots of traffic. If you arrive early, there will be refreshments at the wedding and events pavilion next to the restaurant.

Children will be grouped into three age categories – 4 and under, 5 to 7 and 8 to 10 years old. The Easter bunny left a lot of eggs on the beach, and every one of them has a small surprise inside.

After the hunt, the Easter Bunny will lead a parade of kids and their

parents up Pine Avenue for the Seventh Annual Easter Egg Roll and Easter Bonnet Contest.

Kids will enjoy the face painting, egg dyeing and egg rolling. Dara Caudill, of IslandPhotography.org, will be offering complimentary framed pictures with the Easter Bunny. Chuck Caudill will be playing music, and the Sandbar will provide food and refreshments. Everyone will get a number that can be redeemed at participating shops on “The Greenest Little Main Street in America,” Pine Avenue.

The Easter Bonnet Contest is a popular event. The first place adult prize is a two-night stay at Anna Maria Guest House. There will be prizes for second and third place.

The first place kid’s bonnet will get a lunch at the Sandbar for the winner and three friends, complete with hot fudge sundaes. There will also be prizes for second and third place in the kid’s competition.

Prince’s place A couple dozen people braved the rainy weather to dedicate Prince Park, at 300 52nd St., named after the cat that adopted two shopping centers in Holmes Beach. The plucky feline used to roam the stores, eating food from Minnie’s Beach Café, sunning himself in the display windows of Mister Roberts and visiting shops in the S&S plaza and the Island Shopping Center. When he was tortured by some people on the Fourth of July, the businesses got together to rise money for his treatment, and when he got sick, people responded to a story in The Anna Maria Island Sun and donated more than enough money to pay for his treatment.

Finally, Prince died July 19 after being attacked by another animal, possibly a raptor. At the dedication, Holmes Beach City Commissioner Judy Titsworth read a proclamation and then Patti LeCroy gave a $1,000 check to Devinne Whittaker of Beach Veterinary Clinic for a fund to pay for treating stray animals and animals whose owners could not pay for treatment. There is a stone marker at the park honoring Prince.

Avenue C repaved Life is getting back to normal on Avenue C in Holmes Beach after several months of sewer work and construction that left residents faced with flooding, muck and a torn up road.

The issue began when Larry Chatt, of Island Real Estate, was required to install a new sewer line on the street for a building he was constructing at the corner of Avenue C and 30th Street.

Now that the sewer work is completed, Chatt had the road repaved and replaced trees, sod and mulch.

Neighborhood Watch class offered A Neighborhood Watch class will be held at Holmes Beach City Hall on Tuesday, March 29, at 6 p.m. Neighborhood Watch is a program involving the joint efforts of law enforcement and the community and is designed to enhance neighborhood security, heighten the community’s power of observation and encourage mutual assistance and concern among neighbors.

Cooper seeks reelection West Manatee Fire Rescue Commissioner Randy Cooper has filed to run for reelection. He was first elected to the position in 2008 and now serves as chairman of the fire commission and treasurer of the Manatee County Fire Commissioners’ Association.

Cooper, who was a volunteer firefighter in Hillsborough County and served for eleven years in the Florida Army National Guard, moved to Bradenton from Tampa in 2003. He is a civil engineer and owner of R. Cooper Engineering, an agricultural engineering consulting business.

Cooper enjoys woodworking and is a backyard beekeeper. He and his wife Alba, who teaches English as a second language, live the Palma Sola area with their cats and a colony of honey bees.

They both volunteer with Manatee County Natural Resources Department.

Churches will offer Easter worship The Easter Service at Manatee Beach starts at 6:30 a.m. It includes participants from all of the churches on the Island.

Easter is one of the holiest Christian holidays and those who are here on vacation will be welcome to a wide variety of services from the six churches on the Island.

The most interesting celebration should be the 52nd Easter Sunrise Service sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Anna Maria Island at Manatee Public Beach.

Each of the churches is represented. The benediction this year will be delivered by Rev. Edward Moss, of Crosspointe Fellowship.

A representative of St. Bernard Catholic Church will be delivering the offertory prayer. Father Matthew Grunfeld, of Episcopal

Church of the Annunciation, will deliver the opening prayer. Rev. Dr. Bob O’Keef, of Roser Memorial Community Church, will deliver the sermon. Rev. Stephen King, of Harvey Memorial Church, and Rev. Rosemary Backer of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, will deliver scriptures. Bring a chair or blanket and some money for the offertory.

Money raise will be split between the churches.

Here’s a look at what each church is doing.

• CrossPointe Fellowship, 8605 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach, will have a Good Friday service on March 25 at 7 p.m. There will be a 9 a.m. service Easter morning. The number is 778-0719.

Automated ticket writers headed south?

Bradenton Beach Police Chief Sam Speciale has proposed converting to an automated parking ticket system similar to what will be implemented in the city of Anna Maria in April.

Speciale made the suggestion during a recent department head meeting and said he would conduct additional research before making a formal request to the city comsubmitted mission.

EDITORIAL Remembering Prince

A

group of business owners and residents gathered at Prince Park last Saturday to honor the spirit of a cat who taught us something about ourselves.

The little pocket park at 300 52nd Street in Holmes Beach is a serene place with benches and shade trees across the street from the hustle and bustle of the shopping centers Prince called home.

This little symbol of independence was like a lot of those who helped him - Anna Maria Island is full of people who love to do their own thing, embrace nature and root for the underdog.

When local business owners learned Prince was ill, they began a fundraising campaign to pay for his care, then set up an account in his name for other animals that need help, but whose owners can’t afford it.

Prince was a truly likeable but still independent fellow, who tolerated the many admiring people wanting to interrupt his day and scratch him behind the ears. And he lived life mostly with a full belly, garnering meals from just about everyone, especially the folks at Minnie's.

People used to watch in horror as Prince would bravely cross busy Gulf Drive to get to Island Shopping Center or back to S&S Plaza. As was befitting royalty, traffic would grind to a halt just to let Prince go from one side of the road to the other.

When he was killed in an attack by what was believed to be a wild animal, word spread quickly around the Island. It was a sad ending to a brave little cat.

The Holmes Beach City Commission decided to name the park after Prince, giving people a nice place to relax from the day’s stress. In addition, the business owners got a concrete headstone and Earl and Sophie Anderson made it into a beautiful monument to Prince.

The park is more than that though. It is a reminder that at some point in time, this little cat adopted two shopping centers and the businesspeople and their customers. In return, they showered him with their love and best wishes, not because they had to but because they wanted to. Prince Park is a monument not just to a friendly feline, but also to those people who made Prince’s choice of independence a reality.

Now we get to listen to all the commercial building and lawn mowing on the day that was set aside for the vets.

Jazz Fest, Beach Dance delight crowds The Gulf Drive Band provided music again this season to raise money for the Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra. The 13th annual Jazz Fest on February 9 and the 6th annual Oldies Beach Dance on March 8 provided a variety of music styles for both audiences.

In particular, we thank the Jazz Fest audience, that had to tolerate cold temperatures and a stiff onshore wind. We also thank our sponsors, The Sun newspaper as well as Ed Chiles and the Sandbar restaurant. After expenses, funds raised went directly to AMICCO.

A tip of the hat goes to our guest performer, Koko Ray, a premier saxophonist, flutist and vocalist, as well as Judy Lynn on vocals, Ted Young on piano and Nancy Ambrose and Jeanie Pickwick from AMICCO. Elected officials prioritize traffic fixes Island officials compiled a list of ways to immediately impact traffic congestion.

BRADENTON BEACH – Officials prioritized a list of transportation projects submitted by each of the four mayors at last week’s meeting of Island elected officials.

In January, officials agreed that each city would make a list of ways to immediately impact traffic congestion on the barrier islands to be presented to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) officials.

Longboat Key Town Manager Dave Bullock compiled the list and facilitated the prioritizing session. Officials first went through the list combining some items and then deciding which ones qualified as short term.

Projects identified

The list of short-term projects is as follows:

• Determine the viability and effectiveness of express buses both on Manatee Avenue and Cortez Road, with only two to three central pick up stops in Bradenton/Palmetto and ending at the Manatee or Coquina beaches and offer a rider coupon for use at beach concessions.

In coordination with Manatee County, lease a portion of the parking lots at 75th Street and Manatee Avenue and 75th Street and Cortez Road and offer shuttle service to and from the Island.

Seek active support and involvement of the Chambers of Commerce and business leaders in identifying and implementing congestion improvement solutions.

Collect data on numbers of employees, work schedules, business hours, rental schedules from businesses and realtors in order to explore feasibility of staggered work schedules and rental agreement schedules to avoid peak times during season • Reduce drawbridge lifts on

Cortez, Anna Maria Island and New Pass bridges to one per hour and less during peak traffic periods.

• Monitor traffic flow remotely using the cameras already installed and adjust red light/green light time accordingly to facilitate the flow off and onto the Island.

• Review currently funded FDOT study of bridge openings and automated traffic signal timer (four lights) for monitoring changes.

• Consider manual override, law enforcement, for maximum traffic signal flow on or off the Island as needed on heavy beach days.

• Add an extra trolley when needed.

• Improve traffic light operations at Cortez Bridge to 119th Street to allow better traffic flow on Cortez Road.

Bullock said he would draft a letter for approval by the four mayors.

Following approval, the letter would be sent to the FDOT district secretary.

Cortez Road suggestion

Tom Freewall, of Longboat Key, presented a suggestion to alleviate congestion at 119th Street in Cortez.

“The traffic light at 119th Street is an on demand light, and one vehicle turning the light on creates an effect all the way to Island Time (at the corner of Gulf Drive and Bridge Street),” he explained. “If we could fix that, it’s the beginning of our long term solution.”

He said Cortez Road has enough asphalt to create two lanes going east, and the right hand lane could be used only for traffic coming off the Cortez Bridge. He said the traffic light could be turned off, and an officer could direct the traffic that exits 119th Street onto the eastbound left lane on Cortez Road.

“We could test this on a busy Sunday with low cost and low risk and se how much impact it has on the traffic on SR 789,” he concluded.

Officials did not take any action on the suggestion.

BRADENTON BEACH – Island mayors reported on their efforts to implement the suggestions in the Urban Land Institute (ULI) report at last week’s meeting of Island elected officials.

In 2014, the three Island cities contracted with the Urban Land Institute (ULI) to perform an Island-wide study. The ULI provides guidance to communities in addressing problems associated with land use, development and growth. The report was published in February 2015.

Holmes Beach City Commissioner Jean Peelen said, “I’m feeling that it is what we all said it would not be – on the shelf somewhere. I understand that the three mayors have worked with each other on some of the aspects. “Other than that, there’s nothing happening. I’m asking the mayors to put together a group from all three cities to look at the recommendations and look at ways to implement them.�

Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy said the three mayors have appointed an Island-wide team to look at historical preservation, “which is a big part of the ULI study. “We’re moving forward with getting a historic preservation board established. There’s a state model for that. It’s a huge effort with Island-wide impact.�

Murphy said he and the other two mayors have worked on consolidation and now all the three cities share a city engineer. In addition, all three cities are working on an Island-wide pedestrian/bicycle path.

PARKING: Amended ordinance introduced FROM PAGE 5

Reclamation efforts

Building Official Steve Gilbert introduced the amended ordinance at the Thursday, March 17, City Commission meeting. The parking ordinance is a precursor to the city’s efforts to reclaim city-owned right of ways and rid them of the rocks, railroad ties, landscaping features and other elements that prevent legal right of way parking.

According to Police Chief Sam Speciale, parking with your tires on the pavement is, and always will be, a violation.

“If there’s rubber on the pavement you’re going to get a ticket,” he said when discussing the proposed amendments later in the week, while noting that officer discretion

also comes into play.

Vice Mayor Ed Straight said requiring the roadway to be entirely free of parked vehicles might adversely impact north side residents.

“If you take the time to drive up and down Avenue A, B and C you will see lots of problems,” he said of the limited street-side parking available in some areas.

Gilbert said the city’s land development code allows only sod, grass and other approved ground cover in city rights of way.

He added that many property owners have planted and landscaped to the roadway edge of the right of way, which eliminates the potential to park legally in the right of way located in front of one’s home.

“On average, there’s 15 feet on either side of the pavement to park, but they’ve filled it up with other stuff,” Gilbert said.

“Regaining our property is going to be pretty hard,” Straight said.

Commissioner Jan Vosburgh suggested this might “open a can of worms.”

The amended ordinance proposes giving homeowners the exclusive use of the code-compliant right of way in front of their homes, as long as the space is not designated as public parking in order to fulfill beach renourishment parking requirements.

Speciale said this in response to complaints about vacation rental guests parking in front of owner-occupied homes.

Mayor Bill Shearon supports the proposed changes.

“The intent of this ordinance is to some extent take back our right of ways so that everybody is treated fair. You can’t have an exception for one area and not for the other.

We also have to take into consideration that we have parking requirements for beach renourishment,” he said.

Speciale said, “What we’re trying to do is get this ordinance strict enough that it gives me the opportunity to enforce it, but gives us enough leeway that it doesn’t infringe on the property owners’ rights. The subject of taking over the right of ways is a totally different issue. This is the parking ordinance.”

The proposed parking ordinance amendments will be discussed again during a public hearing and adoption process that will allow for public input.

City website gets a makeover The new city website was designed to be more userfriendly and accommodating of mobile devices.

ANNA MARIA – The city has upgraded its municipal website and Administrative Assistant Debbie Haynes and Finance Director Maggie Martinez recently discussed the changes.

“If you use the navigation tabs up at the top, there’s drop-down menus and it’s very user-friendly as far as trying to locate documents, agendas, contacts for the city, ordinances and vacation rental applications. Eventually it will also allow for paying parking tickets too,” Haynes said.

“There’s a tab for residents and a tab for visitors, so it’s got a lot of information there. When things are

going on in Anna Maria we’ll be able to update that information on the homepage,” she added.

The bottom right hand corner of the new homepage provides alerts and timely information of use to visitors and residents. One such pop-up alert provides users with contact information for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office in an effort to assist stone crabbers and shark anglers.

“We can put these alerts on the homepage as something happens, as is the case with the crab trap and shark fishing notice,” Haynes explained.

She said alerts would also be posted regarding the turtle nesting season and upcoming events. People can also sign up to receive alert notifications directly from the city.

The new website features an Explore Anna Maria link to a Google map of the Island that can be enlarged. It also features a rotating array of photographs featuring local landmarks and scenery, including daytime and nighttime shots of the Anna Maria City Pier.

“We’re thankful for the pictures

people sent in, and if people want to send us pictures they can,” Martinez said.

“We worked hard to get this going. Diane Percycoe, our city clerk, picked out the colors, and we’re very proud of it. It’s beautiful,” Martinez added.

“It was definitely a joint effort as far as getting it up and running and making the design more beachy and colorful. We’ve gotten a lot of compliments so far,” Haynes said.

The new website was also designed to be more accommodating for those who visit it using cell phones and other mobile devices.

cortez: Property sells for $10 million FROM PAGE 1

Grimes’ aunt, Kathe Tupin Fannon, a Cortez boat captain and commercial fisherman, suggested the purchase in January, he said, and last week he competed the deal.

“My initial thought was to protect it because I’m from here,” said Grimes, a fifth-generation Cortezian and former commercial fisherman whose grandfather taught him to play golf on the property as a child from the back of a kicker boat.

While he’s considering naming the development after his grandfather, something like Capt. Frank’s Motor Coach Resort and Marina, he’s also considering letting the village pick the name. He’s also thinking about naming the wet slips after Cortez boat captains, using their nicknames like “Blue” and “Tink.”

“It’s important we stay tightknit in this community,” he said. “We gotta keep it local.”

Water everywhere

The property’s canal, which borders it on three sides, touches Peninsula Bay to the northeast, a planned 1,800-home subdivision by Manatee Fruit Co. President Whiting Preston. Two RV parks lie to the east of the property, Buttonwood Inlet RV Resort and Holiday Cove RV Resort.

Located across Cortez Road from the historic Cortez commercial fishing village, the property is the former Cipriani family compound, sold in 2002 by Frank Cipriani, who operated C n’ C Marine, to Swedish businessman Peter Thurell.

Thurell called it Hunter’s Hill, using part of the original name of Cortez, Hunter’s Point, which he had already named his home at the southwestern tip of Cortez village.

The hill on the property is actually a bomb shelter built by Ed Cipriani underneath his carport in 1960, just in time for Hurricane Donna. His family used the shelter during the storm, emerging to find only the carport roof blown off.

New plans

Thurell’s development plans, approved by the Manatee County Commission, would have included 36 two-story, single-family homes in fishing cottage style, six townhouses atop 7,000 square feet of retail space, a caretaker’s house, 37 new boat slips (eliminating more than 100 slips), a boat ramp and a tidal pond.

Grimes’ plans are less dense, with 107 spacious motor coach lots and no tidal pond, he said, adding that he hopes county officials will take into consideration that, unlike

All in the family

“The motivation behind this is family, to leave this to our kids,” Caylee, 12, and Landon, 10, Grimes said, adding that he’s married to a fourth-generation local, Caroline, his middle-school sweetheart.

If his family had not just completed their dream house in northwest Bradenton, they probably would have moved to the property, he said.

“This is an amazing opportunity that Peter and his family blessed our family with,” Grimes said, crediting the Thurells with believing in Cortez, their second home.

But building a development is a full-time job, he said.

“You need someone who’s tied deeply enough to this community to do a project this size. That is the secret here,” said Grimes, who also is director of sales at DSG, a dental appliance manufacturer with offices in the U.S. and Canada.

As was the case county-wide and state-wide, Island voters favored Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in the March 15 Presidential Preference Primary elections.

In Anna Maria, Clinton received 130 votes, Bernie Sanders received 80 votes and Martin O’Malley received three votes.

In the Republican race, Trump received 146 votes, Marco Rubio received 103, Ted Cruz received 54 and John Ka-

Bradenton Beach Democrats favored Clinton over Sanders by a three-vote margin, with Clinton receiving 58 votes and Sanders receiving 55.

Island-wide bike route evolving Potential funding sources are being identified as proposed route maps are being developed and distributed.

ANNA MARIA ISLAND – The efforts to develop an Island-wide bike route are progressing on multiple fronts.

The mayors of the three Island cities, joined by project engineer Lynn Burnett, were scheduled to meet with Congressmen Vern Buchanan’s special assistant, Gary Tibbetts, on Wednesday, March 23, to discuss potential federal funding for the bike route.

The meeting with Tibbetts stemmed from a conversation Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy had with Buchanan at a recent social event also attended by County Commissioner Carol Whitmore.

During the March 14 Island Transportation Planning Organization (ITPO) meeting, Murphy recounted his conversation with the

congressman.

“I started telling him about our bicycle path and he said this is long overdue. He rides it all the time, from Longboat Key across the bridge and up to Jane E’s and Ginny’s and sometimes the pier," Murphy said.

Buchanan chairs a house subcommittee that among other things has the ability to fund bicycle-related projects.

“What we need to do is put together a plan,” Murphy said, noting that the project plan Burnett had just presented could be used to pursue federal funding.

The plan developed by Burnett was prompted by previous ITPO discussions regarding the possibility of submitting a funding request to Manatee County officials for the possible use of excess beach concession revenues.

“The overall goal would be to provide an Island-wide bike route that can safely get people from the north tip to the south tip, as well as to the mainland connector points; and starting to put those pieces together on a smaller scale that would include signage, striping and the reclamation of right of way

areas that have been encroached upon,” Burnett said.

In regard to potential infrastructure improvements, Burnett mentioned the intersection at Palm Drive and Gulf Drive. She said there is no sidewalk or bike path on the east side of Gulf Drive in that area, and she suggested constructing a multi-use path that would connect to Willow Avenue and Anna Maria’s designated bike route. She said there are already plans for a drainage project in that area, and the two projects could coincide with one another.

“For Holmes Beach, we have some neighborhood and commission workshops that need to be scheduled sooner rather than later to make sure everybody’s had their input and concerns taken into consideration as we finalize what would be the route or routes through Holmes Beach,” Burnett said.

Burnett said potential bike path improvements in Bradenton Beach could be incorporated into the Capital Improvement Projects five-year priority list currently being developed.

“There’s not a lot of options in Bradenton

Beach. It’s pretty limited,” she said in regard to a significant portion of that city’s proposed bike route being restricted to Gulf Drive, which is controlled by the Florida Department of Transportation.

“We have a good path in each of the three cities that are lining up and coming together.

I think I’ve got some clear direction on what we need to do to pull it all together as one,” Burnett said.

On March 18, Bike-Walk Anna Maria chair Claudia Carlson distributed a proposed Island-wide bike route map created by the Manatee County employees as a tool to be used during further discussions with community stakeholders.

The Anna Maria Bike Map developed by Amy Tripp is now available at city hall, The Center, the Anna Maria Island Historical Society, the AMI Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Maritime Museum and at various bike rental locations, realty companies and businesses Island-wide.

The only elevated manufactured home in the Sandpiper Resort may soon be joined by others

Land Development Code adopted The new codes include several provisions designed to benefit property owners.

BRADENTON BEACH – More than five years in the making, the city of Bradenton Beach’s revised and updated Land Development Code (LDC) is now in effect.

The City Commission formally adopted the 215-page document on Wednesday, March 9.

Last week, the new code was posted at the city website, www.cityofbradentonbeach. com. An LDC link at the city homepage directs users to the Build Department page where the LDC documents are located. The LDC’s 10 individual chapters can be accessed separately and the entire LDC can be viewed and downloaded as a PDF document.

Drafted by City Planner Alan Garrett and Building Official Steve Gilbert, the LDC is more user-friendly than the previous document; and Gilbert said the new codes would help determine what the city looks like 25 to 30 years from now.

In May 2014, Garrett, Gilbert and Planning and Zoning Board members Dan DeBaun, John Burns, John Metz and Fawzy Makar began a meticulous line-by-line review of the existing codes, making numerous suggestions, clarifications, additions and subtractions along the way.

A primary goal was to allow for greater compliance with FEMA flood plain regulations and changing flood insurance requirements. This was accomplished in part by allowing residential structures to be elevated without a city-issued variance. This includes the M-1 zone districts that encompass the city’s two manufactured home communities: Sandpiper Resort Co-op and the Pines Trailer Park.

The only elevated home currently located in the Sandpiper Resort required a variance issued by the special master in 2014. Gilbert stated on many occasions that FEMA would like see all Island homes elevated at some point.

During the recent public hearings that led to the final LDC adoption, Attorney Patricia Petruff assisted Sandpiper property own-

ers in striking a density ratio provision that would have required two manufactured homes to be removed in order for a new one to be erected.

The new LDC makes it easier and more cost-effective to develop and redevelop properties located along Gulf Drive, from Third Street South to 13th Street South. This was accomplished by decreasing the Gulf Drive setback from 25 feet to 15 feet.

The revised LDC also encourages driveways to be located on side streets rather than on Gulf Drive and clarifies the process for changing an address in order to reflect a primary entrance relocated to a side street.

Patrick Shomo praised Garrett, Gilbert, the commission and the planning board for their efforts, even though he still has some lingering concerns about remaining restrictions that only impact Gulf Drive property owners.

Shomo said the new codes would still allow him to finally replace the dilapidated second home he owns at the corner of Gulf Drive and Fifth Street South.

The LDC includes residential parking requirements based on the square footage of air-conditioned space; but the commission voted 4-1 in favor of removing the planning board-requested provision that called for required residential parking to take place underneath the structure, within the building footprint.

The planning board hoped this might help address concerns about vacation rental parking, but the four commissioners felt this was too restrictive, and might also prove impractical in terms of vehicles being parked in front of one another two or three cars deep. Out of respect for the planning board’s desires, Mayor Bill Shearon cast the lone opposition vote, and the commission agreed that residential parking might be readdressed at a later date.

Unlike the previous LDC, the new code requires parking space for open-air establishments. Now incorporating both indoor and outdoor dining, the LDC requires one parking space for every five seats. The old LDC required one space for every three seats, but did not apply to outdoor dining. The new parking requirements do not pertain to existing establishments.

HOLMES BEACH – The early birds got to tour the nests before the rain came Saturday.

There were five homes in the tour, all on the water, and owners took advantage of that with large window views.

Three ladies from the Valrico area were there, not for the first time. Holly Morgan, Nancy Kelley and Claudia Yake say they come every year to see

the homes and to catch up with the local news by reading The Sun. “The homes are fabulous and it’s so nice that the owners open them up for us to visit,� said Kelley as they stood in front of the home of Diane and Kurt Snouffer at 534 70th Street. “This house had some great touches like pictures of shells with real sand under the glass.�

They said they loved seeing what owners do when they refurbish an older house as well as the new homes and how they take advantage of their location.

Fortunately, the rain did not spoil the event for most of the visitors as they came prepared with umbrellas.

All in the family The grandson of local Islanders Andre Renard and Carol Whitmore follows family tradition with his recent acceptance to West Point Military Academy.

Michael Andre Renard, 17, was accepted recently and will report to West Point on June 27. Andre's son, Laurent Renard, is also a graduate of West Point.

Michael, his mother, Valarie Renard, and sister Sophie live in Cary, N.C. Michael received a four-year ROTC scholarship that he could have used at North Carolina State or The Citadel, where he also was accepted.

The Island residents protested the lack of information about the project, and they formed an activist group known as Save Anna Maria (SAM), which took FDOT to task and at an administrative hearing, a judge ruled FDOT had not sufficiently advised the citizens of the project’s plans and the state abandoned the project.

FDOT rehabilitated the bridge in 2008, and the next year, started making plans to either keep or replace it. Public hearings were held and FDOT officials determined the bridge should be replaced. There was still some opposition, but the final decision was to replace the low-level drawbridge with a fixed-span structure.

Reactivated

Members of SAM have remobilized and will meet to discuss the bridge issue at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 26, at 11 a.m. Justin Bloom, of Suncoast Waterkeeper, will speak on efforts to protect the local waterways through environmental education and advocacy. SAM member Ursula Stemm said members attended a meeting on March 11 at the Manatee Public Works building where FDOT laid out plans for the project.

“We were the minority,” she said. “The room was full of architects and engineers.”

As for SAM’s goals, Stemm said the public needs a voice in the future of the bay and waterfront.

“We need to align ourselves with other environmental groups like the Sierra Club and Manasota 88,” she said.

On Jan. 15 of this year, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) granted approval (Location and Design Concept Acceptance) of the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) with the updated environmental assessment for the replacement of the bridge. The FONSI will be available for reading at the Island Branch Library, 5701 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, and at the Manatee County Central Library at 1301 Barcarrota Blvd, W. in Bradenton.

“We’ve set up an aesthetics committee composed of people chosen by the local governments to add input into what the bridge will look like,” said project manager Kati Sherrard. “We will have some public meetings so the people will be able to see the plans.”

Sherrard said they will set up a new website soon so people will have a chance to follow the progress.

“We’re hoping to have a section with frequently asked questions,” Sherrard said.

As it is now, the plan calls for the 65-foot clearance bridge to have two traffic lanes, each with 12-foot shoulders plus 10-foot sidewalks on both sides of the traffic lanes. In an emergency, the shoulders could be used for disabled or emergency vehicles to stop without impeding the flow of traffic. The shoulders and walkways would also be available for bicyclists.

The sidewalks will be separated from the shoulders by concrete barrier walls.

The location of the new bridge will be south of the present structure, which will remain operational until the new bridge is opened to traffic. There is no prediction available from FDOT as to when construction would start.

This refreshing spring salad with a lemon dressing pairs perfectly with the Motorworks Brewing Hudson Hefeweizen. It's great for having company over and lounging outside on a sunny Florida day. In the past when our black skimmer and least tern bird colonies have chosen a place to nest here on Anna Maria Island, we have asked Manatee Audubon members to assemble some of their group to help with bird stewarding, which they can only do two weekends a year.

I have asked for some help from my best birding friends from other areas to help us put together a bird stewarding program and we will run it through Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring.

So this is a call out for a new set of volunteers to bird steward during May, June, July and August.

Much of this will be weekends. Holley Short, bird stewardship coordinator with Audubon Florida, will come give us a class. Lucky for us here on AMI, we only need to educate and not police the area where our birds are.

This new set of volunteers can be anyone and they do not have to be connected to AMITW as no permitting is required for bird steward training.

Kids, grandparents, aunties, uncles and your best friends all can help.

The swing to spring Reel Time RUSTY CHINNIS

S

uddenly spring is here, and all signs point that way. By the middle of March, there is a good chance that we can depend on warm weather to prevail, but that doesn’t mean a cold front might be just around the corner. I think preparing for the wonders that the season brings is the right idea. Reports indicate that snook fishing is great, there are some big trout being caught and redfish are a good possibility, if not reliable. I thought I would check in with a few local guides to get an idea what the experts are finding in local waters. These guides are on the water on a consistent basis and have a real feel for the variety, distribution and action anglers are likely to find.

Captain Scott Moore reports that snook fishing is very good with fish ranging from 25 to 27 inches.

Water on the flats is hitting the mid-70s and fish are responding. Moore has also been encountering some very nice trout and snook near the mouth of the river in glass minnow schools. He has been successful with a combination of live bait, as well as lures, particularly top water and jigs like the MirroLure Marsh Minnow.

Redfish are always a possibility, but not as prevalent as the trout and snook. Moore has been having good action in Palma Sola Bay, as well as the eastern shoreline of Sarasota Bay. He’s also still is finding sheepshead on the edges of the ship channel in Tampa Bay. Captain Chris Hargiss is finding tremendous sight fishing for snook on the edges of the Manatee River near the mouth of Tampa Bay. Hargiss is fly fishing, and his clients that can get the flies to the fish and entice them with a proper strip are being rewarded with some fish to 28 inches. The recent warm weather has really been good for the snook bite, according to Hargiss. He says that as the water temperature increases some of the larger snook will be making their way towards passes and open water. Sight fishing the larger snook can be tricky, but if you can sight them before they see you, these predatory and hungry fish will sometimes smash large profile baitfish patterns.

Captain Justin Moore reports that he’s having some of the best fishing for big trout in years and great action on snook, as well as a few reds. He’s using live bait and working the deep grass, seams and potholes on the flats from Tampa Bay to Long Bar. He’s also finding good action on bluefish in deep grass. Moore cautions anglers to remember that these big trout are spawning now and full of row. He encourages anglers to release the big females if possible. see reel time, page 45

With water temperatures bumping up into the mid 70s, action turned on with a variety of species in Sarasota Bay. According to Captain Rick Grassett, night snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW has been very good lately. A strong tide is important and the strong incoming tides close to the new moon last week, combined with rapidly rising water temperatures resulted in great action. Anglers on four different trips all had nonstop action mostly on flies, but a spin angler did very well with a CAL jig and a glow shad tail.

Snook gorged themselves on a variety of baits, so in addition to his

Captain Harrison King reports that snook fishing has been great on flies, artificial baits and white bait. He has been concentrating his fishing in Sarasota and south Tampa Bay. He’s catching a few reds, most of which seem to be in very shallow water. Trout and pompano fishing in 4 to 8 feet of water over grass has also been a good option. King reports that fishing in the Gulf is heating up with the warming water tempera-

ture and he expects more pelagic species like kings, cobia and permit will be showing up.

As I’m writing this report the forecast is for a cooling off with a night in the 50s the first of the week. That might change fishing temporarily, but a rebound is likely in no more than a couple of days. As soon as the weather permits and baitfish move to the beaches, kingfish should also be a distinct possibility. The message is clear – spring is here and with it some of the best fishing of the year. Get out there and enjoy.

Museum hours to change

Summer hours will begin at the Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum, 402 Pine Ave., Anna Maria, on Monday, March 28. The museum will no longer be open on Saturday, but will be open Monday through Friday. In addition, the last day to purchase Early Settler’s Bread is Wednesday, March 23. Sun coast vs. No coast

his time last year I took a trip up to the Panhandle, a very popular area for tourists and Florida transplants. The area I visited is commonly called the Emerald Coast and extends approximately from Rosemary Beach to Fort Walton Beach. It includes the master planned communities of WaterColor, Seaside and Rosemary Beach, all of which I took a look at. I concluded that although the beaches along Florida’s Panhandle are spectacular, they were practically hidden behind tall condos lining the beach and were far less accessible than the beaches on Florida’s Sun Coast, where we live.

This year I took a little trip up to Celebration, Fla. near Disney World, which is another master planned community similar to those in the Panhandle, but without the beach. Celebration was developed by The Walt Disney Company starting in 1996 in the early

Castles in the Sand Louise Bolger 20th Century style of architecture and is still connected to Disney World via one of its streets. The population as of the 2010 census was 7,427.

Celebration, like most master planned communities, seeks to reproduce entire towns including restaurants, schools, post offices, libraries, banks, as well as single family and multi- family housing, all with walkable streets and lots and lots of front porches. It’s very pretty and totally consistent and just a little too perfect for my taste, but I do see the attraction.

This of course brings me back to Bradenton’s own master planned communi-

ties that are on the drawing board, Lake Flores and the somewhat smaller Peninsula Bay. Much has been written about Lake Flores, which has been approved and is predicting a 20-year build out by its developers, the Manatee Fruit Company.

Lake Flores promises about 6,500 homes, 3 million square feet of offices and retail space and a 500-room hotel. Also included are a major lakefront park, about 40 percent open space and a 50-foot wide trail weaving through the property.

The Peninsula Bay development will run along Cortez Road back to Palma Sola Bay almost opposite the Historic Cortez Fishing Village. The plan is for approximately 3,960 new residences, as well as a 101-slip marina including dining, boat storage and shops. The developers mean to conserve the mangroves along Palma Sola Bay, as well as the wetlands along Cortez Road, and plan on the community being utilized

by residents and visitors alike.

When questioned last year, Whiting Preston, president of Manatee Fruit Company said that Florida will continue to grow in population and construction, and rather than sell off their property for separate subdivisions and shopping centers, they have created a cohesive plan for the entire site.

The intent is to create a community so residents don’t always need to leave the area, keeping traffic off some of the heavily travelled main arteries.

Does this mean the Sun Coast is losing its identity and turning into the Emerald Coast or the No Coast? I certainly hope not. But things are changing and changing fast and the problem of all of these new residents filtering on to tiny Anna Maria Island still hasn’t been addressed.

I think next year I’ll just stay home, since there really is no place like it.

Park enhancements approved

BRADENTON BEACH – City commissioners reached consensus recently to move forward with a 13-point plan to enhance two adjoining city parks collectively referred to as the Herb Dolan Bayfront North parks.

The park and adjacent children’s playground are located across the street from one another at the north end of the city, near 25th Street North and Avenue A North.

The park improvements were discussed at the Wednesday, March 2, Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) meeting and presented by Lt. John Cosby, who serves as a CIP facilitator.

The proposed improvements incorporated suggestions residents provided during a town hall-style meeting that took place in the park in January.

“The main thing we heard was that people really want to keep it simple and keep it the way it is,” Cosby told the commission.

The commission agreed with Cosby’s suggestion that the existing open space remain mostly untouched, but directed Cosby to research the possible installation of an additional concrete slab that would allow for the expansion of the existing pickleball court.

The existing fencing will be removed and replaced by black, industrial strength fencing, and a privacy fence will be erected between the playground and a home owned by Rick Bisio. A raised crosswalk will be installed in order to better connect the primary park and the playground area.

Three Australian pines located along the shoreline at the eastern edge of the primary park will be removed, and some of the mangroves will be trimmed in a windowed manner that provides greater visibility of the bay.

The existing pavilions will be repainted using the green and brown hues used in federal parks. The parking area will be reconfigured in a manner that allows for straight-ahead pullin parking rather than diagonal parking.

The idea of creating an area within the park for dogs was discussed but dismissed. The commission also nixed Commissioner Jake Spooner’s suggestion that grills be installed and Commissioner Jan Vosburgh’s suggestion for more picnic tables. The other commissioners and some of the residents who provided public input felt these amenities might attract a demographic of park users less suitable for the park’s neighborhood setting.

The commission was divided and undecided in regard to adding modern portable restrooms. Spooner and Mayor Bill Shearon were in favor of installing the rest rooms on a trial basis. The rest of the commission was lukewarm to the idea, but left it open for future consideration. The commission supported Cosby’s suggestion that the new fencing be erected in a manner that allows for the installation and maintenance of portable rest rooms if desired at a later date.

Resident Jim Hassett and Linda Kollmorgen praised the recent addition of the pickleball court and the growing popularity of the sport.

Cosby said the tree removal and the fencing would be the most expensive components of the plan, and he is now working on cost estimates for the park enhancements.

Docs to the rescue Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Inc. in Bradenton Beach treated an injured Florida Cooter last week that had been hit by a car and was severely injured. Volunteer vet Dr. Ashley Gardner, of Island Animal Clinic, and dentist Dr. John Norman, of Holmes Beach, gave the turtle a good chance of survival. Dr. Ashley was able to suture the internal wounds together and prepare the shell for repair using a Dremel tool. Dr. Norman was then able to apply dental composite resin, which will act as a temporary protective hard layer that will eventually be removed as the shell heals.

The complainant told the deputy he saw some kids with a BB gun and heard some pellets hit his lawn furniture. He yelled at them, and they stopped right way and apologized. The homeowner looked later and saw damage to some windows. The deputy talked with the kids, and they agreed to pay for the damage, so he took no further action.

3/13, information, 100 S, Bay Blvd., Anna Maria City Pier. Friends of a visitor to the Island said she disappeared while they were out, and she suffers from dementia. A search was conducted, and a trolley driver said he delivered her to Bridge Street. Officers found her and returned her to her family.

3/10, assist, 521 Spring Ave. The deputy was forwarded a report from New York State Police in reference to a fraud. The trooper she spoke with advised they took a fraud report where a prospective renter sent a total of $3,600.04 in Money Grams to rent the property. This turned out to be scam. The trooper wanted Manatee County Sheriff’s Office to be aware of the scam in case this is an ongoing Craig’s List problem at this address.

He found them and called for backup. He noticed on of the subjects had a bulge in his pants pocket and his hand was inside the pocket. The suspect said it was marijuana, When he turned the suspect around to get to the pocket, the suspect ran. The officer caught him and they wrestled. The suspect called for his partner to help, and the office yelled for him to stay away. The other subject finally helped out and the officer lost his grip on the first suspect, who fled in one direction. The other suspect ran in another direction. Just then, the backup arrived and spotted one of the suspects.

He was found to have a bag of what was identified as cocaine. He also found pills, a scale and other paraphernalia.

They failed to locate the other subject, but they charged the one in custody with possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

3/2, driving with a suspended license, no registration, attaching a license not assigned to the vehicle, no proof of insurance and failure to wear a seatbelt. The officer stopped the man for not wearing his seatbelt and found all the problems that led to the charges. He was given a notice to appear.

3/4, disorderly conduct, Publix, 3900 East Bay Drive. A man became verbally abusive inside the store and refused to leave. He was arrested.

3/5, disorderly conduct, trespassing, Citgo Gas, 3015 Gulf Drive, Mike Norman Realty, 3101 Gulf Drive. The clerk at the gas station said a white male came in and started asking questions about heating food in a microwave. She told him the store’s microwave did not work, and he started yelling profanities at her, He walked outside and started yelling profanities at two young girls who were walking. The clerk went outside and told him to stop, and he yelled at her and then he threw his cup to the ground. When the officer arrived, he found the suspect and the clerk identified him. The officer found out there was a trespass warning for him at Mike Norman Realty. He was arrested. On the way to the county jail, he became combativ, and the officer had to put a hood over his head due to his spitting in the patrol car.

3/6, DUI, 5200 Gulf Drive. The officer was on patrol, and he noticed the suspect’s vehicle was going into the bicycle lane.

He got behind the driver who made an immediate right turn onto 50th Street and sped up. The office activated his lights and the suspect slowly came to a halt. While talking to the suspect, he noticed blurry eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcohol. When asked how much the suspect had to drink, he said a couple of beers. The officer found 15 empty beer cans in the bed of the truck and a shotgun with ammunition inside the cab. The officer had the suspect perform a field sobriety test and arrested him.

Youth flag football: It’s more than just a sport

With the close of another youth flag football season, I think back on all of the years that I have been involved with community center sports, as a parent, coach, player and now reporter.

After covering the center flag football games this season for The Sun, I am reminded of the many important and valuable takeaways.

The older players that have played on the island since stepping foot on the small instructional league field have learned the technical part of the sport, learned sportsmanship, learned how to be part of a team, even with strangers, and learned how to be competitors on the field and friends off the field. The role of the volunteer coach is so critical in the teaching and reinforcing of these skills. Without the teaching of these key elements of the game, the coaches are nothing more than adults on the sidelines that make sure the players are not just picking daisies.

This season, the boys and girls who played at the center continued to hone their football and life skills, and the coaches all gave of their time to be there for the Island area youth. Each individual played an important part in making the island the special place we all know and love.

Despite the fact that The center’s many youth sports leagues are recreational they are competitive to those playing. Even on the instructional field where the score is not formally recorded, the players all know who won and who lost. It is just the nature of sports, and nothing we as a society does will change that basic and innate instinct.

The kids that show up to practices and games each week take each game seriously and a number of them have personal goals and achievements for which they strive toward each week.

Many of the youth players have been participating in center sports for more than a decade. These kids all know how all-star teams are traditionally chosen. They know the standout players, both for skill and character, will be nominated for end of season awards.

At the beginning of each season (or the end of the previous season), many make a personal goal to play at the top of or elevate their game to be nominated for one of the awards.

In reality, the large majority of the players at the center will not make

Team Sugar Beach Digital clinched the 11- to 13-year-old youth flag football league championship to end the season at The Center. their school’s sports team. An even smaller number will play varsity at the high school level, and a rare few will play in college. The Center is their athletic highlight and the place where great memories will be made both on and off the field, including the end of the season accolades that are part of what has always been part of community center sports.

The last several games in the playoffs of this year’s flag football season revealed all of the realities of youth sports at The Center. Bottom seeded teams defeated higher ranked teams. Players who were not flashy or huge playmakers during the regular season made the difference for their team during the playoffs.

In a blowout game, 11- to 13-yearold league’s Sugar Beach Digital, led by quarterback Nate Costello, took the season championship in the game against Signarama Tuesday, March 15.

Signarama, the “Baseball Team” as informally dubbed by their coach during the pre-season team draft, entered the game with confidence after eliminating the regular season champions Team Air & Energy in overtime the night before. First seed Air & Energy defeated Sugar Beach Digital in its head-to-head match up weeks earlier.

The unlikely match-up in the championship game was just another example of how youth sports can always be more than just about the team that has the most skill. The winners, regardless of a team’s record, can be the team with the most heart, the team that bonds on and off the field or the team that makes the most progress in the season.

Sugar Beach Digital started the game with strong momentum that did not wane throughout the 40 minutes of play. In the first play of the game, Jaden Torres took the handoff and ran the ball back with lightning speed for the team’s first touchdown of the game.

Signarama’s defense looked promising on the point after attempt. With strong coverage in the end zone, Costello could not find an open man. The referee counted down seven seconds, and Costello’s failure to launch the ball ended the play leaving the score at 6-0.

On offense, playing without teammate Sam Waterman, Signarama started with an incomplete pass by Mack May. Sugar Beach Digital was called for illegal rush, giving Signarama three attempts to get the football past the midfield mark. see sports, page 59

On March 19, there was also a three team playoff after each

After a bad snap by the center on the first down play and a short yardage gain on second down, May threw the ball finding Trevor Vierra for a first down. With is defensive radar on, Luke Bisio successfully read the play and jumped in front of the intended receiver intercepting the ball. Bisio’s run back after picking off the ball was stopped just short of a touchdown.

Sugar Beach Digital made quick work on the field with a second down touchdown pass from Gavin Johnston to Costello. Bisio added the point after increasing the team’s lead to 13.

QB May could not make anything happen for the Signarama offense with two incomplete passes. May was sacked on third down by Torres turning the ball over to Sugar Beach Digital.

Three possessions, three touchdowns for Sugar Beach Digital. Joey Mannino had a ten-yard gain on first down and this season’s female MVP and newcomer to island sports Alyssa Ely made the first down for her team.

Noah Costello, younger brother of Nate, took the snap and quickly got it to Nate Costello gaining short yardage before having his flag pulled by May. 15 yards from end zone Johnston hit Noah Costello for the touchdown with the extra point from Nate Costello to Johnston advancing the score to 20-0.

Execution errors continued for Signarama. Missed snaps and forced passes

because of intense rushing by Sugar Beach Digital forced Signarama to lose possession of the ball with six minutes left in the half.

Sugar Beach Digital continued to show their dominance in the game with a touchdown after three plays including a catch

by Johnston and first down catch by Bisio.

Nate Costello’s touchdown added six points to the scoreboard. The extra point throw was incomplete due to the strong defensive rush by Fiona Turner-Leathem.

Turner-Leathem was hands down the most valuable player for Signarama in the semi-final game against Air & Energy. Her speed off the line and tenacity the night before resulted in four sacks and many forced passes.

Up by 26 points, the referees instituted the game’s mercy rule. Sugar Beach Digital could no longer rush quarterback May. With less defensive pressure, May continued to throw incomplete passes. With the last minute of the half ticking off the clock, May did not see the open man in corner of the end zone on third down.

The incomplete pass gave Sugar Beach Digital the ball back. Vierra gained rushing yards on the first down play. On second down, playing defense Signarama’s May intercepted the ball. May ran the ball down the field toward the end zone before the quick defense of Sugar Beach Digital caught up with him and pulled May to the ground preventing the Signarama touchdown and ending the half.

Signarama started the second half on offense hopeful to make a strong comeback.

The wind was quickly knocked out of the team’s sails with an immediate interception

After three unsuccessful plays, Signarama for the first time in the game stopped Sugar Beach Digital from making a first down and scoring.

May, looking for the quick score, threw a bomb down the field straight to Nate Costello, defensive MVP for the season, for another interception. Mannino score the fifth touchdown for Sugar Beach Digital.

The extra point pass was batted down by Devin Calderon.

With the score 32-0, and Sugar Beach Digital’s strongest players on the sideline, Signarama connected on two critical passes. Calderon caught a 15-yard pass and Tommy Zinna moved the ball an additional five yards. May hit Vierra for the team’s first touchdown of the game.

Signarama successfully converted on the two-point attempt, closing the scoring gap to four touchdowns.

Ensuring all of their players got ample playing time, as they should, Sugar Beach Digital started clock management with 12 minutes left in the game. The Costello brothers found connected with a pass from Noah Costello to Nate for the next two plays.

Receiving their plays from the coach on the sideline, Torres scores the touchdown and point after for Sugar Beach Digital.

After a flag pull by Nate Costello on the first down play for Signarama, he nabbed another interception for the bad May pass, running it back for six more Sugar Beach Digital points. Vierra batted down the extra point pass.

Zinna was the playmaker for Signarama for their next offensive possession, making three receptions including one for the second and final touchdown for Signarama.

Missing the extra point, the score was left at 45-14.

Showing good sportsmanship with less than three minutes left on the clock both of the Costellos were sidelined. Signarama continued with defensive pressure, getting another chance to score after Sugar Beach Digital could not gain the first down.

With less than a minute left on the clock, Signarama executed three plays. On the final play of the championship game and Turner-Leathem as center, May handed off to Vierra. Vierra was stopped in his tracks with the final flag pull of the season by Ava Zink. Zink finished a strong season and her time in the 11-to 13-year old league showing why she has been one of the strongest players at the center for years.

Another season done and another championship game played. Lessons learned and skills honed. On to youth soccer where many of the same kids will hit the pitch playing their hearts out for the championship and weekly recognition for their skills, effort and sportsmanship.
