CONNECTED

DYNAMIC

IFF WHAT A conference branding project that observes human motion to capture the innate connectivity of mind, body, and machine.

WHY Data exists everywhere and is often seen as the something cold and inhumane when, in fact, the best data about human motion is found in sports. Wanting others to see the cyclical nature of data, the Iff conference combines subjects of psychology, data visualization, and biomechanics.

HOW Iff, acommon abbrieviation for the statistics and philosophy concept, “if and only if, describes a biconditional, logical connective between two statements or ideas. The conference uses datasets and imagery from sports and human activity to emphasize that data is human and more than cold numbers.

HOW WE CAN FIND OURSELVES IN DATA GIORGIA LUPI — INFORMATION DESIGNER

Giorgia Lupi uses data to tell human stories, adding nuance to numbers. In this charming talk, she shares how we can bring personality to data, visualizing even the mundane details of our daily lives and transforming the abstract and uncountable into something that can be seen, felt and directly reconnected to our lives.

BRAIN-CHANGING BENEFITS OF EXERCISE WENDY SUZUKI — NEUROSCIENTIST/AUTHOR

What’s the most transformative thing that you can do for your brain today? Exercise! says neuroscientist Wendy Suzuki. Get inspired to go to the gym as Suzuki discusses the science of how working out boosts your mood and memory -- and protects your brain against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

ARE ATHLETES REALLY GETTING FASTER, BETTER, STRONGER? DAVID EPSTEIN — SPORTS SCIENCE REPORTER

Artist Chris Jordan shows us an arresting view of what Western culture looks like. His supersized images picture some unimaginable statistics like the astonishing number of paper cups we use every single day.

REAL REASON FOR THE BRAIN DANIEL WOLPERT — MOVEMENT EXPERT

Neuroscientist Daniel Wolpert starts from a surprising premise: the brain evolved, not to think or feel, but to control movement. In this entertaining, data-rich talk he gives us a glimpse into how the brain creates the grace and agility of human motion.

THE MATH BEHIND BASKETBALL’S WILDEST MOVES RAJIV MAHESWARAN — RESEARCHER

Basketball is a fast-moving game of improvisation, contact and spatio-temporal pattern recognition. Rajiv Maheswaran and his colleagues are analyzing the movements behind the key plays of the game, to help coaches and players combine intuition with new data. Bonus: What they’re learning could help us understand how humans move everywhere.

THE FUTURE OF PSYCHEDELICASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY RICK DOBLIN — PSYCHEDELICS RESEARCHER

Could psychedelics help us heal from trauma and mental illnesses? Researcher Rick Doblin has spent the past three decades investigating this question, and the results are promising. In this dive into the science of psychedelics, he explains how drugs like LSD, psilocybin and MDMA affect your brain — and shows how, when paired with psychotherapy, they could change the way we treat PTSD, depression, substance abuse and more.

POWERFUL STATS INTO ART CHRIS JORDAN — ARTIST

Artist Chris Jordan shows us an arresting view of what Western culture looks like. His supersized images picture some unimaginable statistics like the astonishing number of paper cups we use every single day.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE HUMAN BRAIN? SUZANNA HERCULANO-HOUZEL — NEUROSCIENTIST

The human brain is puzzling — it is curiously large given the size of our bodies, uses a tremendous amount of energy for its weight, and has a bizarrely dense cerebral cortex. Why?Neuroscientist Suzana Herculano-Houzel puts on her detective’s cap and leads us through this mystery. By making “brain soup,” she arrives at a startling conclusion.

_What does the human body look like in motion? _What does the human mind look like in motion? _In what ways do the body and brain interact? _How can data sets be expressed in various techniques?

_How will the field of biomechanics be expanded? _Could psychiatry begin to involve exercise? _Can the mind be trained in the same way as the body? _How can data feel less cold and more human? _How can data become more accessible and useful? _How can a deeper understanding of consciousness be established through physical and mental activity?

CONCEPT #02

IFF moving together.

iff, or “if and only if, describes the biconditional logical connection between two ideas. we can learn from data if and only if we recognize the humanity behind the numbers. this concept focuses on things that work together & parts of a whole.

CONCEPT #03

POPULATION mind. body. machine.

population refers to the group of individuals from which data was collected. it also has the meaning of a certain number of people who make up a community. it calls on the numbers and the different people.

CONCEPT #04

OUTLIER activating the quantitative and qualitative.

outlier investigates both the numerical values and the humanity of data gathered. the importance of the individual human experience is explored among how to relate its quantitative representation back to its qualitative values.

CONCEPT #05

MECHANISMS OF MOVEMENT the human machine.

with an emphasis on movement, this method will aim to capture the personality and emtions of each player. a story is told through the dynamic stills and the ups and downs of playing a game.

CONCEPT #06

OUT OF BOUNDS outside the standard distribution.

out of bounds emphasizes the idea to not stop at the data but to look at all available values and examine the information and stories within. the phrase brings thoughts of courts and boundaries to mind while also connecting to the parameters for datasets.

aiming to push the concept behind the title of the conference and the system of iconography created. assigning specific equations to the different days and using them to create a primary mark.

all functions describe biconditional relationships and are solved if and only if [iff] the components work together. this draws from the themes of mind and body working together as a machine. if & only if = two components working in tandem. the repeating character “f from the logotype forms the basis of all shape construction, especially in that of iconography and the representation of a basketball court. the hyperbola specifically represents two paths as similar as they are opposite existing on the same plane. they typically depict objects in motion such as certain trajectories, scattering, and orbits.

Day One is the perfect way to get your feet wet in the world of data and biomechanics. Lectures and workshops focus on the big -picture ideas and cover the basis for learning how the mind and body interact especially when in motion. Some data is introduced but not excessively so if numbers aren’t your favorite thing, this day is for you.
