Nicotera is 200 mt up the sea and it is wet by the Mediterranean sea. It has got a strategic position.

The ancient village was surrounded by walls and seven doors.
Today you can see only Porta Palmentieri, the entrance to the Marina way
CHURCHES Nicotera was an important
Episcopal centre with the house where the bishop lived. There are eight churches called : The Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption, Saint Rosario’s Church, Saint Cross, Saint Francis, Gesù and Maria, Saint Joseph, Saint Clara and Madonna della Scala.
The most important monuments in the town are the Cathedral and the Norman Castle.
THE CATHEDRAL
The CASTLE
 Nicotera ‘ s Cathedral is one of the oldest
of Calabria. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Assumption. It is divided in three naves. In the church there are many important pictures and statues.

Inside the church there are many important statues‌..
…and big pictures called “pale” in Italian language.
THE MAIN ALTAR IS MADE OF POLYCHROME MARBLES.
YOU CAN SEE SOME BRICKS OF THE PREVIOUS CHURCH
All around the altar there are the wooden chairs for bishops and priests during the important religious services.
A big Jesus on the
cross is on the left wall and it was shot by Saracens pirates that invaded and plundered many times the town during the 17° century.
You can see the
bullet holes on the Crucifix .
The CASTLE
The castle was a Norman building. It was rebuilt several times. During the centuries it has got different owners. Today it is a private property and it hosts a farm civilization museum. Sometimes convention and cultural events are held in the castle.
FOUNTAINS and MILLS
In Nicotera there were a lot of fountains and a very important mills’ road.
Today there are only few fountains, the biggest one is the Monchs’ fountain.
Nicotera is a nice touristic place
