AUTOMATISM - Spontaneous behavior; an act performed unconsiously.
Automatism is a technique used by surrealist painters and poets to express the creative force of the unconscious in art. Coincidence and chance plays an important role in automatism drawing. Automatism is the source of inspiration for my MA project. I will use and develop the different techniques and use the findings as the startingpoint for my final collection. Too much freedom can be a hurdle when working in the creative process. I see the automatism techniques as a way to kickstart my creative process and create some interesting frames for the project. I will use my findings as the starting point for my moodboard, material investigation and shape investigation. I see this as an opportunity to create a more unconcious starting point - a starting point that I would not be able to create, if I did not let the unconcious play the most important role. The project will be an assignment created and solved by using unconcious chance. I have been looking into 10 different automatism techniques. - Outagraphy, frottage, aerography, collage, ĂŠclaboussure, coulage, fumage, entopic graphomania, soufflage, decalcomania. The automatism techniques used can either be left as originally concieved or consicously elaborated upon. In this paper I have explained the way the different techniques was executed and given my thoughts on how these might benefit my further process and investigation. This is the starting point of my experiments. It serves as inspiration for new techniques derived from the already existing.
OUTAGRAPHY
Technique: A photograph in which the main This technique could be used in combination with entopic graphoobject of the photo is cut out. mania or work as a seperate technique. The technique is interesting because both Elaborated on technique: Could be used for collage investigation cut-outs and the negative space can be used and try to combine it with entopic graphomania. Use fabric to add for shape investigation. in the cutout space.
FROTTAGE
Technique: Placing thin paper on top of textured surface and then rub the paper with a pencil. The surface made from this technique is very interesting, I would consider finding textiles with a similary surface, and use the different textures as a indicator for choosing fabric. - Manipulate fabrics the same way as paper to get a similar expression. Could also work as inspiration for a print or knit-file.
AEROGRAPHY
Technique: 3D objects are used as a stencil for spraypaint. The technique can change different 3D objects into a 2D shape. Both the negative space and the shape is interesting. I would use this to explore shape. The result is 2D - A development of the technique could be to reverse the experiment one more time from 2D-->3D using clay etc to build the 3D object. Use the 3D shape on body.
COLLAGE
Technique: Assembling different 2D shapes tagraphy and others, to be interesting to use in the process of deand creating new shapes. The techniques is veloping shape, but maybe also prints for the collection. This techa wellknown way to create new innovative nique can be used as a final way to link and combe the different shapes. I see this in a combination with outechniques in this book.
ÉCLABOUSSURE
Technique: Firstly you put aqua paint on canvas - then you splatter water on it. Lastly you remove the water with a dry papercloth. This could be used for an interesting textile print in combination with some of the other techniques.
COULAGE
Technique: - unvolentary sculpturing - Pouring hot wax/stearin in cold water. Interesting inspiration to shape. Zooming in on the shape and work with a more specific area of the object could be interesting. The outer shape can be used in relation to the body. Could also be interesting to develop for print or imitate the organic surface for textile.
FUMAGE
Technique: Using smoke as a drawing tool by letting the flame touch the paper and leave a burned mark. Leave impression on paper. Findings: shape, surface, colour and textile print. The technique could work as inspiration for textile print. Could also be interesting to leave a burned trace on the fabric or the collection.
ENTOPIC GRAPHOMANIA
Technique; Drawing with dots. Add a number of dots be folded and used as inspiration for outer shape. The on paper - Make lines between the dots - either straight PAPERFOLDING technique can be developed from or curved lines. The lines created can be inspiration for this - folding paper randomly to create a 3D shape. lines in the garment, pocket/trim shapes. The lines can
SOUFFLAGE
Technique: Add an amount of paint to a piece of paper - blow upon the wet paint. Interesting both positive and negative space. Both can be used as inspiration for outer shape but also the inner definition in the garments like lines and cuts. Could also be used to develop a textile print.
DECALCOMANIA Technique: Spread thick ink/paint randomly on canvas. Put a new piece of paper, metal foil etc. on top and press. - remove the paper before the paint is dry. - the wet paint is used as a random stencil. Try to do the technique on fabric aswell. - Can be inspiration for print and the ‘painting’ like surface - try to imitate the surface on fabric by adding silicone etc on fabric and let it dry. - maybe even try to make a geometric 3d mold and let it imprint a pattern on the fabric in silicone etc.
