Editor’s Letter
I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to throwing my coat in the waredrobe and leaving it there! With the warmer weather finally starting to show itself a sense of happiness is growing, the flowers are blooming, the smell of freshly cut grass, people driving with the radio blasting with the windows rolled down, it all feels a relief after the cold hard winter everyone has experienced during this nasty recession. It feels like you can achieve more and finally get to do those things you have been putting off, like clearing out that cupboard full to the brim of useless junk you haven’t used for the last three years but hold onto just incase...... Get the windows open, turn the radio on with some feel good music, invite the girls round and have a swap it party, get them to bring round their stuff they don’t want and put it all in a pile. Not only will you get some new stuff for free it’s a great excuse to have a good old gossip! :) I would like to wish everyone a fantastic Easter x And on a personal note, I would like to wish my Mum a Happy Mothers day, thank you for all the support you have given me through the stressful times of running my own business x

Bumps & Babies!
Shellie Wall is a photographer who captures special moments for mums to be and newborns. www.shelliewallphotography.co.uk Shellie trained as a private maternity nurse and worked up until she had her first son who is now 12, and then when her second son came along in 2001 she bought her first digital camera and there started the love for digital photography. Purely as a hobby, Shellie started clicking away capturing photos of her boys. And when in 2005 came along son number 3, the photography went up a notch! Out went the camera and in came one that not only took pictures but also captured videos. When the demand from friends came in for photos of them, their bumps and babies, Shellie quickly realised that hiring a local studio was a necessity and picked the brains of professional photographers to expand her knowledge. In 2009 Shellie took the plunge and started ‘Shellie Wall Photography’, run from her own studio at home the business is going from strength to strength.
collecting the boys I try to edit a quick sneak peek for the parents to see. Collect boys from school then its homework, tea, bath and bed!!! Once the boys are all in their bed I normally can’t wait to start editing….
“I photograph everything from maternity/newborn, weddings/family and also cover events. But children and newborns is where my passion lies, capturing all those little details that disappear all too quickly, their tiny features, fluffy hair, and all that is new about them. Newborn sessions are done within the first 12 days.”
Any tips for other mothers planning on starting their own business ? I’m not sure I have any tips for starting your own business ,only that if you have the passion as I do then go for it, I have a manic life at times but I love every minute of it!
What is your daily life like? Daily life can be manic but I am a firm believer in routine. I always try to prepare myself for a newborn photoshoot the night before by making sure I have the right props set up and try to work out what poses I’m going to use. Not that you can guarantee it will go to plan, babies are very unpredictable so you mostly end up going with the flow!! In the morning of a newborn session I start the heating up (the room has to be toasty!), get the boys ready for school (hubby always does breakfast so I can go around collecting school bags and packing the right pack lunch into the right bags) and then take the boys to school. Then it’s home for a quick cuppa, before a final check on the room temp just before baby arrives. Newborn sessions can take anything from 2hrs to 4hrs. After baby and parents leave and if I have time before
Any funny or heart warming moment that you have experienced doing a newborn/pregnancy photoshoot? I had one newborn session where I went to the clients home, it was her 3rd baby and she was the most sleepy relaxed baby ever, and slept though the entire session. Half way though the mother asked if she could go and have a bath, I was so flattered that she felt comfortable enough with me that she could ask and she went off for 20 mins had a soak and came down a new woman!!
How can parents and parents to be get a perfect photgraph of their baby? Tips for achieving a perfect photo of your newborn is preparation, cover what everything baby is to lay on to protect it from accidents which happen A LOT!! Make sure baby is well feed, clean and warm. And the most important thing is to be patient !!! These little ones can not and will not be hurried! What your plans are for the future? My plans for the future is to specialise solely in maternity and newborn photography. And hopefully one day have a big posh studio that is warm in the winter! But for now I’m loving every session I do, each little newborn that comes though my door is different and capturing that for their loving parents fills me with joy.

Makeup Blog The Bare Truth, My Guide To Minerals by Makeup expert Lisa Precious www.lisaprecious.co.uk
The Bare minerals SPF 15 foundation RRP £23 is actually available in 20 shades from fair to golden and will last ages as you only need the tiniest little bit when applied with the flawless application brush.
B
eing a make-up artist I should know everything there is to know about make–up, right? So having been asked in the past what my thoughts are on mineral make-up, I simply replied “Oh just another fad in the make-up industry” How wrong I was! Last week a lovely box arrived on my doorstep from Bare Escentuals, the bare minerals cosmetic house. Inside this little box were lots of delightful little pots of mineral make-up, three brushes and a DVD. I was so excited to start using them!
I am now converted to minerals. I will be using the products on my clients in the Summer months instead of tinted moisturisers as they are perfect for those who like a lightweight feel to their skin and have the added bonus of an SPF 15. The great thing is they are actually clinically proven to be good for the skin, free from preservatives, talc, oil, waxes, binders, fillers and fragrances, what more could you ask for from a foundation? So pure that if you forget to remove your make-up at night they are even good enough to sleep in!!
The first step is to apply the Prime Time Foundation Primer RRP £19, a face primer and brightener in one. This left my skin feeling velvety soft almost like a very sheer veil had been placed over it, infused with vitamins and skin soothing benefits, free of preservatives, oils and fragrances this is suitable for the most sensitive of skins. It instantly smooths and reduces large open pores, making it the perfect base for your mineral make-up. The Bare Minerals 8 piece Get Started Complexion Box RRP £48 is the perfect introduction to mineral make-up and contains everything you need to create a natural flawless complexion. Mineral make-up is suitable for all skin types, you can create as little or as much coverage as you want using the brushes supplied, think of it as building layers of chiffon over your face. Even dry skins will like it as the texture is creamy and silky rather than matte like a powder. In addition to the foundations supplied was Warmth All Over Face Colour, this is used to create a sun kissed glow where the sun would naturally hit the skin creating a warm healthy complexion suitable for even the palest skin.

Pilates and Pregnancy Why is Pilates good for you during pregnancy and beyond?
P
ilates is concidered one of the best forms of exercise to do during and after pregnancy. It’s all about building a strong core which hellps you achieve better posture, balance and improves the strength in your stomach and pelvic muscles. Perfect to help you and your body cope with stresses of being pregnant! During your pregnancy your body will undergo many changes. As your baby grows it can begin to place stress on your spine especially your lower back. Pilates can help your body with these changes by building the strength you will need to support your skeleton and muscles during your pregnancy. Your balance is also affected as your centre of gravity will shift with the extra weight of the baby and can be improved through Pilates. It will also help you maintain good movement in everyday life which can contribute to a positive experience of pregnancy. During the first three months of pregnancy you can often feel exhausted and nauseous and not feel at all like exercising, but once you start you will often find you will feel more energised both mentally and physically afterwards. Hormonal changes during pregnancy promote flexibility in the joints and muscles, so you must be careful not to overstretch when practicing Pilates. Pilates breathing techniques can be useful during labour to help ease tension and remain calm allowing for a more positive experience. During most women’s second trimester they develop higher energy levels. You should make the most of this time and concentrate on developing strength in your stomach, pelvic and core muscles to help you during the harder third trimester. This is when most women tend to feel heavy and uncomfortable. In the postnatal period Pilates can help you with your posture as well as creating stronger back and tightening those poored over stretched tummy muscles. It’s famous for helping new mums get their figures back after baby is born! Pilates harmonising effect is great at helping with the fatigue, weakened abdominal muscles, demands of breastfeeding, and the day-to-day life after your baby has been born. It’s advisable to wait until after you have been given the go-ahead in your post-natal check, usually at six weeks, as you can cause more harm than good to your body by tearing muscles that have not had time to readjust and heal.
16 | anne louise april 2011
“I can say from personal experience that just after one month of Pilates I soon noticed a feeling of calmness. More defined muscles, stamina, more energy and ease of other exercise. When I would go for a run I could feel muscles being used I never knew existed!!! From all the exercises I have tried from the gym, aerobics, swimming, running and martial arts I have found that PIlates has strongly become a favourite of mine.” Says Farah. Exclusive Interview: with Greek Pop Diva Ilia Darlin
Ilia Darlin is frequently touted as the “European Lady Gaga.” There’s no denying a few similarities between the two ....however Ilia has captured a worldwide fan base all of her own. Interview Linsey Robinson
How did you get into the music business, have you always known you wanted to be a singer? I started “performing” to my family, friends and neighbours when I was about 4. I would make them sit down all together and watch me sing and dance, and I was offended if they didn’t take it seriously! I started taking dancing classes when I was 7 and then when I was 13 I joined the National Music Conservatory of Greece and fell in love with singing. I’ve always wanted to be a singer and a performer. Getting into the music business was a natural progress in my life. I had an underground pop-electro band when I started and the biggest famous director of Greece noticed me. I starred in his movie called Art-Therapy and then one thing lead to another. The movie is a docu-fiction and focuses on the lives of three young artists who live in Athens and are trying to make it. The movie ends with myself moving to London to pursue my career. You can’t really tell the line between the documentary and the fiction part in the movie. You grew up in Greece, what was life like for you as a teenager? I grew up in Athens and went to a beautiful school on a hill full of trees (I love nature). I was very tormented though and definitely didn’t fit in! At the time I was also dressing weird and my classmates thought I was doing drugs in school and that I was a bit crazy. I was finding it hard to focus in reality. I was a daydreamer and restless. However I was a good student though! When I was about 14 I would sneak out of my house at nighttime and go to clubs. Make-up helped me get in everywhere. I would sacrifice anything for adventure and danger. My favorite thing was going up to one of the ancient rocks of Athens”Lykabettus” at night and looking over the city. The energy up there was amazing. I would feel so free. What’s life like behind the scenes, is there bits of the music industry you don’t like?
Life behind the scenes is waiting to get on stage. When I’m not performing I’m thinking and working on my next performance, songs, clothes etc. For me right now my whole life is around my music and performances. I go to the studio, write new material, design and make my clothes, do photo shoots etc. There’s nothing else I can enjoy right now other than my art. I’m a quite obsessive person. How would you describe your music style? Pop dance and personal under a neon point of view. What has been the highlight of your music career so far? Hmm that’s tough. So many things have happened and they were so big for me for different reasons. If we’re talking about live performances probably performing at the Greek Fashion Rocks in front of thousands of the most important people in music and fashion as well as in front of millions that were watching from home. In terms of experiences, going to L.A and recording at the same studio as Michael Jackson. Also getting interviewed in the MTV after the show we did for the Christmas lights was quite surreal. I’ve been watching MTV forever :) And then starring in a movie...you see I can’t tell. Where would be your dream gig? In Rio de Janeiro, on Copacabana beach. How do you feel about being compared to Lady Gaga? I think we’re passed that point now and I’m very happy. As I’ve said in the past is natural when you‘re a new artist to be compared to others and we had that funny coincidence with the meat thing in my video, that stirred up the talk but now it’s in the past. I don’t think our music or voices or figures are similar. Lady Gaga is having a truly admirable career but there have been other creative pop artists too in musics history. april 2011 anne louise | 19
Marketing is scary sometimes on how it can wipe out people’s memories. Are there any notable differences between working in the U.K and working in Greece? I wouldn’t really say so. It’s just that in the U.K everything is in a bigger scale. Greece is a very small country. Up to this point though I was lucky to have had very good collaborations everywhere I’ve been. What was your experience of Los Angeles? It was amazing. It was so good that I’m planning to move there soon. The climate, the people, the food, everything felt very familiar. There is a great flourish in the art scene of L. A right now. A lot of artists are moving and working there and I feel the next “wave” of something, the next new thing is going to emerge from L. A. Do you have any pets? No, not any more. I used to have a dog but she died and I don’t think I could cope with anything similar happening to me again .It’s been 5 years and I still think that she’ll be waiting for me at our house in Greece when I go back.I’m extremely sensitive when it comes to animals. What is your typical day? Well I’m not an early morning person to begin with. I couldn’t say there is a typical day. Every day is so different because of what I do and this is what I love the most .I hate having a routine. It’s killing me. What do you do to de-stress and relax? Very simple stuff. I’ll have a bath with oils, watch a movie, have something nice to eat, write. I’ll try to disconnect for a while from what’s happening around me and in my life and focus on an indulgence.
20 | anne louise april 2011
What music is on your ipod? Kate Bush, Amy Winehouse, Peaches, Demis Roussos, The Knife, Kylie Minogue... Who do you go to if you need cheering up? My mom and because she’s in Greece I call her on the phone. It’s a guaranteed phone call. I don t know how she does it but it always works, always! How do you fit friends and relationships around your music career? Sometimes I neglect people but not intentionally. My schedule is hectic but my friends are understanding. Relationships don’t fit in very successfully. Who would want to be with someone so obsessed with their career as me!? What’s the best piece of advice you have been given? Not to waste my time on people and situations I don’t enjoy because nobody can bring back the time I’ve lost on them. What is your weakness when it comes to shopping? LOL. Everything. From gadgets to shoes, cosmetics, underwear, absolutely everything. Is there a beauty product you can’t live without? Lip balm, hair conditioner, moisturising cream, my perfume...I can go on and on and on. Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you… I’m into paganism as my grandma was. www.iliadarlin.com

600g sweet potatoes 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp ras el hanout (Moroccan spice mix) 5 pineapple rings 1 tsp rose harissa (or harissa) 100g breadcrumbs 50g almonds, coarsely chopped 100g pumpkin seeds, crushed Gram flour (chick pea flour) to coat the burgers

3. Chop one of the pineapple rings into small cubes and put in a big bowl, with the cooked sweet potato flesh, fried onions, rose harissa, breadcrumbs, almonds and pumpkin seeds. Season to taste. 4. Form the mixture into burgers. You can make four thick or eight thin burgers as preferred. Coat them in the gram flour and shallow fry until golden on each side. 5. While the burgers are frying, make the relish by mixing all the ingredients together.
6. Griddle the remaining pineapple rings on each side. 7. Assemble by placing one burger in each roll, followed by the griddled pineapple then the relish. Add the second burger on top if using and serve with a simple Moroccan salad (recipe below).

It’s in the stars... April horoscopes by Anne Louise’s astrologer Jason Caddy
Aries
21 Mar - 21 April
Taurus
22 April - 21 May
Gemini
21 May- 20 June
Your ruler Mars in your sign makes you a powerhouse, but you may experience some resistance from others if you push for your own way too much. There could be a few crossed wires in communications too, with Mercury retrograde. Neptune in Pisces strikes up both your fiery creativity and your natural enterprising spirit.
You may have experienced a bit of a fallow period in your career, but this will slowly be replaced by some positive developments. However, an awkward communication planet Mercury may put you at crossed purposes with others, so be prepared for lots of misunderstandings at work. But once the sun arrives in your sign, this should clear up.
With your ruling planet, Mercury, going backwards, be mindful of lots of crossed wires. Neptune will light a fire under your ambition and make you feel that the sky’s the limit, but a sense of reality should be present at all times. Use this month to put paid to scattering your precious time and energy.
Cancer
Leo
Virgo
22 June - 23 July
24 July - 23 Aug
24 Aug - 23 Sept
You may have to be a bit more flexible at work if you want to get people on board with your ideas, as you may be faced with a little more resistance than you had anticipated. Neptune in your sister sign of Pisces enhances your creativity, and your imagination runs wild. Jot down any ideas that you have.
The move of Neptune encourages you to cast your mind to the long term. This may have an impact on anything that you have joint responsibility for, especially finances. The end of the month will witness a more sociable Leo emerge, which is a good thing really, as there should be plenty of excuses to have party!
Your fantasy world could be a tempting escape from the rigours of real life, with planet Neptune in your relationship zone. There is nothing wrong with indulging yourself a little, if you feel that this is what you need. Other people’s intentions may not be as clear as you would like. Are you being kept in the dark about something?
Libra 24 Sept - 23 Oct
Scorpio 24 Oct - 23 Nov
Sagittarius 23 Nov - 22 Dec
Getting along with other people really helps you out this month, despite the odd pocket of resistance. Fantasy planet Neptune in your work zone may throw a few spanners in the works where colleagues are concerned, and all you can do is be honest and straightforward, and take things with a pinch of salt.
Do your best not to get caught up in the chaos of others, and your best bet may be to keep your head down as much as you can. Romance may not be far from your thoughts this month, so if you have let things slide in this area of late, why not do something about it? Reintroduce the feel good factor back into your life.
You radiate lots of energy this month now that the sun is in your fiery sister sign of Aries. Spiritual planet Neptune is also giving you a feeling that things may be about to change at home. Are you about to be on the move? Perhaps it’s a holiday that you need, or even a simple overnight might cure your wanderlust.
Capricorn 23 Dec - 20 Jan
Aquarius
Pisces 20 Feb - 20 Mar
Have you been putting off making an important decision? Perhaps you now need to face up to it. Amazing ideas are flooding into your mind, thanks to the move of Neptune, and you shouldn’t discount any of them, as the more bizarre and seemingly unworkable ones could gradually begin to make sense.
You are inclined to stick to your principles through thick and thin, but you may have to be a bit more flexible this month. Please don’t consider changing your point of view as a weakness. If finances are causing you concern, perhaps time has come for a review of your outgoings. Could savings be made?

Neptune back in your sign strikes up your innate creativity, spirituality and all the wonderful qualities associated with your sign. You may feel a sense of optimism about the future and adopt an ‘anything is possible’ outlook. Finances also come under your scrutiny, and you may need to rein in the urge to splurge!

Shoes that change colour? Yep, you heard right! Noshooz are the UKs only colour changing shoe. Change the colour of your shoes to match almost any outfit! Adele chats with Bernie Hurst, Designer and proprietor of Nooshooz. So Bernie tell us a little about yourself. Before you launched Nooshooz what did you do and dream of doing? I was a personal trainer and trained chef. Working with food, I always had an eye for colour. Originally I had always wanted my own restaurant before I went into shoe design. Nooshooz is a fabulous concept, how did you go about starting the business? I went on holiday with the family and got charged £169 excess baggage at the airport due to having too many pairs of shoes in my luggage! I sat by the pool on holiday and wondered how to design a shoe that you could change the colour of to match any outfit. I wanted a shoe that would cut down on luggage and excess charges, but not only that I wanted them to be stylish, well made and pretty too. When I got back from my holiday I searched for a manufacturer online. I found a company in China and who made my first samples, but I did not like them as the quality was not very good, After a tip off from a friend who had been to Brazil and mentioned that they made great quality shoes, I hopped onto a plane and found a shoemaker that made shoes and bags for Harrods. Within 6 weeks I had the samples back from Brazil. A few small changes were made and within another couple of weeks I had my first production delivered. So within 6 months of having the idea I had the shoes in my hands! You have a fabulous collection which is constantly growing, where do you get your inspiration from? I have always loved shoes and I read a lot of fashion magazines. I try to make the shoes that cater for everyone’s taste. Nooshooz has customers as young as 14 right up to 70, so I try to keep all the ladies happy . You must be very busy, but when you do get the chance how do you like to unwind? I work from 6.30 in the morning until midnight most nights, either drawing my new ideas, sorting out orders and arranging shoe parties. But when I do manage to get time off I like to play a lot of sport. And I also like teaching my children to cook. I hear that you are looking for demonstrators to do Nooshooz parties. As the business grows I am always looking for ladies 34 | anne louise april 2011
who love shoes to work as demonstrators . It’s a bit like Anne Summers but without the naughty bits :-) We do a funky feet quiz with discount vouchers as prizes, raffles with luxury feet products as prizes, and it is always fun to spend the night in with the girls with a few glasses of bubbly and a collection of shoes! What has been the highlight for you so far? I think my best moment is when I got an order from Royalty! When the cheque arrived I nearly fell off my stool when I saw who it was from. I am unable to divulge which member of the royal family bought them as I have a strict privacy policy, but they bought 2 pairs of the Anastasia with all of the coloured straps. I have the cheque and a lovely letter from them framed and it takes pride of place in my office. And finally Bernie what are your plans for the future of Nooshooz? I have just designed The Mariya which is an interchangeable ankle boot, but this is the first of my designs which you can convert into a totally different shoe. With the Mariya you have the option to change the colour of the upper, or change it into a strappy sandal. Janice Dickinson and Stacey Solomon already have these, and more celebrities are following suit. I am also designing a new wedge sandal for the summer and also a little girls range for the little fashionistas, these will have interchangeable uppers with fairies, butterflies etc. Check out Adele’s review on a gorgeous pair of ‘Anastasia’ style shoes on the Anne Louise Blog www. annelouisemagazine.com/ accessories.html
