How to put on Eyelashes When it comes to false eyelashes the choice is endless. They’re is such a variety when it comes to choosing, such as length, volume and shape. However, they can be tricky to put on, so if you have never put them on before practice makes perfect. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to get perfect, fluttering eyelashes.

Hold the eyelashes in the middle with a pair of tweezers.

Use the tweezers to place each corner of the lashes along your lash line, gently pressing down to secure them in place. Once they are stuck on firmly, look up and make sure you can’t see any of the glue, if you can apply a little liquid eye liner in black over the top.

Apply the glue along the lash line from start to finish. (Never be naive enough to think that the eyelashes that say they already have glue on them will work - they don’t!)

Close your eye, holding the ey elashes in the middle , place them just above your own la sh line in the middle of your eyelid.

Choose the style of jean you are most comfortable with and what best suited you before your pregnancy. Off Duty Fashion: A Peek inside a Paramedic’s Wardrobe Our new Fashion Editor, Samantha Barker catches up with Ally Wright, a 27 year old Lincolnshire Paramedic to talk off duty style

ecently, having started my son at primary school, I remembered what it was like to have to wear a uniform everyday: the pro of not having to choose an outfit daily but the negative of the lack of freedom and expression, hence, as a creative type, me having avoided wearing a uniform since.

Uniform and Shopping However for many jobs, the uniform is a vital component and allows instant recognition from the public whilst proudly displaying a person’s skills and professionalism. A good friend of mine is a paramedic and consistently works 12 hour 14 | anne louise nov/dec 2011

shifts in tough life/ death conditions; the green uniform she wears signifies emergency help and immediately gives trust to whoever is in need of that help, it reflects the hard graft put in to provide a necessary public service. For a professional who isn’t in the fashion industry or have the time to experiment with their style on a daily basis, it can prove more difficult to develop a strong sense of what suits them and their personality. There is also the factor of cost and making ends meet is becoming increasingly difficult for many, being strategic and opportunistic in relation to your fashion shopping is important and a necessary.

Glitter, Vintage and Practicality….. Delving into Ally’s wardrobe allowed me to see a creative side to a person who within their job shows discipline and organisation. Her wardrobe has a sense of play and indulgence, key items include glittery mega heels and vintage knee high boots that she has had re-heeled and coloured with a black permanent marker to regain an even matt black colour, as opposed to a blotchy one (not advisable but sometimes needs must!). Other staples include a winter mac and quality

wool jumper with a dog motif. The joy of buying clothing can be seen through the purchase of beautiful lace effect vintage gloves, whilst the need for practicality is evident with a selection of key additional items for the winter season.

‘Paramedic Shoulders’ With a petite height and small frame, Ally is fortunate to be able to suit most style of clothing, although the trendy palazzo pants could drown out her curves. She has got ‘paramedic shoulders’ from the amount of lifting she does in her job, which could mean more delicate dress and designer pieces might be difficult to fit in comfortably, but the toning of her shoulders should be shown off and one side shoulder dresses are an effective way of doing this with a stylish and feminine look.

A need for Normality and Christmas Festivities Importantly Ally’s collection of clothing, shoes, bags (LOTS of bags!) and jewellery reflect a need for normality: a healthy approach to socialising in time out from the intense responsibility of her employment. Off duty Christmas fashion will surely include injections of the colour red, which suit Ally’s tanned skin and blonde hair. Ironically the green paramedic uniform also fits in with the festive colours!

During this season’s festivities a little more appreciation for our public services such as paramedics and firemen is due, maybe we should send a few more mince pies their way and show our thanks, letting them know we greatly value their hard work and dedication.

The five point pregnancy plan Lifestyle can have a big impact on pregnancy health and the future health of children. We have a much better understanding today of the link between lifestyle and pregnancy health. Weight, diet and daily exercise, for example, can all have an impact on health during pregnancy and beyond for both mother and baby. Tommy’s, www.tommys.org, has developed a new campaign focusing on five key health messages that we want women, their families and healthcare professionals to take on board.

Three: exercise in pregnancy It is best to maintain a good level of fitness in pregnancy that is consistent with pre-pregnancy fitness level. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per day. Keeping active encourages better well-being, helps aches and pains, improves pregnancy weight management and reduces stress levels.

One: nutrition in pregnancy Four: smoking in pregnancy Women should get enough essential vitamins and minerals in their diet to reduce the risk of having smaller babies with health problems. The three key vitamins and minerals to be aware of are: • folic acid – reduces the likelihood of the baby having neural tube defects • Vitamin D – promotes healthy bones and teeth for the baby • iron – pregnant women can be deficient in iron, which is important for the overall health of mother and baby.

Two: weight in pregnancy Weight should be effectively managed. Having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more is associated with a higher risk of pregnancy complications. We are funding research to develop more support and advice for women with a BMI of 30 or higher. We have already developed a guide called Managing your weight in pregnancy, which you can order free of charge from our shop.

Smokers should give up smoking as soon as possible to increase their chances of having a healthy baby. Giving up smoking is not easy and women need to be made aware of the support that their midwife and GP can provide as well as that available from the local NHS Pregnancy Smoking Cessation Advisor.

Five: mental health in pregnancy Women suffering from mental health problems need to talk to their midwife or GP so that they are put in touch with the appropriate services or support groups. Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health problems in pregnancy. These illnesses affect about 10 to 15 out of every 100 pregnant women and can affect the growth and development of the baby.

Gina G is back! Anne Louise Magazine caught up with Gina for an exclusive interview about her fab new single...... Interview Linsey Robinson

How does it feel to be making a return? Awesome. Now that I’m living in LA, I have to say “awesome”…a lot! But it is. I feel great about it. It has been a tough road to say the least, but I am not a quitter.

artists do it. They fly in and fly out, so that’s what I’ll have to do. So I’ll be earning some air miles that’s for sure. I am about to fly out for a promo tour for the single. I am excited to be back on the scene and doing what I love. And I miss the UK so much.

What have you been up to since your last album?

Are there any planned follow ups or an album in the pipeline?

I’ve always been busy doing music in some way shape or form. I was releasing songs that ended up on compilations in Europe and worldwide. I was a featured artist on club singles. I always had my hand in there doing it, somehow, some way all through the years.

Yes, we are working on the follow up right now and have a few options. It’s an exciting process, but a challenging one when you have more control than you are used to. I work very closely with my label, Discipline Music, who are behind me 100% and decisions are made together. I listen to them, they listen to me. An album is definitely in the pipeline.

But I also had my priority. My family. I got married, had children, lived the family life for many years but all the while doing music. My last release was 2006 and it made some noise. Then I had another baby in 2007, and well….here I am. I couldn’t do both music and be a Mum 100% and make it work. I wanted to devote my time to my kids while they were so young. Now, I have the time. But even through the sleepless nights with baby and through toddlerhood, I was in the studio, writing and recording songs, for other artists and myself. My kids are at school. Now, I’m ready, willing and very able.

Your new single is out soon here in the UK “Next 2 You”, how excited are you about that? Very excited. It feels strange living in the US and releasing a song in the UK, but it’s how all the US

If there is an album what are we to expect terms of musical style? I am going for much tougher sounding tracks than ever before, with exciting, slamming club productions. I love where music is at right now, it is SO me. I’ve been waiting for the hard-edged club dance to be on commercial radio worldwide, now it is. I’ve been trying since I was a teenager to combine my pure pop voice with what a slamming Club DJ would play. And hey, let’s add a great rap, which we did on “Next 2 You” and it worked beautifully. Every song on the album is going to be anthemic and slamming. That, I know for sure.

Are there any artists you would like to collaborate with?   I would LOVE Travie McCoy to rap on one of my tracks. He’s so cool. I love the tatts. nov/dec 2011 anne louise | 29

What or who are you listening to the most at the minute? Whatever my 7 and 4 year old demand I put on, which is all the radio hits. When LMFAO comes on they go nuts. Me too! No really, I listen to all kinds of music. Luckily my kids are into the old stuff as well. I love Boston, a band I discovered from the 80’s while living here and actually, anything from the 80’s. So I do rock out in my car a lot. But back to 2011, I love Taio Cruz and Bruno Mars. They are my commercial radio favourites.

Do you have a favourite Artist or Band? It will always be The Police. Every single album.

What was it like being in the Eurovision back in 1996? Well considering I had no clue what Eurovision was because I had never ever watched it. Not even after I won the British Song Contest did I actually watch Eurovision. They told me to, but I still didn’t. I was too busy. So I would have to say it was all very bizarre. The whole experience was a very strange, chaotic, nightmarish and equally “fun” experience. But mostly, it was just plain weird. I mean, back in 1996, the competition was mainly full of folk songs and I don’t know what. Then I show up, in my teeny weenie, extremely sparkly dress, with a hammering 132 bpm, euro dance tune with all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and the judges must have completely freaked out. All of them looked over 60. Bizarre. I pretended to know what was going on and what I was doing there.

time? In a perfect world, it would be a candle lit bath and a massage. But unfortunately, my destress is falling into bed at midnight, then up again at 6. But I do get the weekends to sleep in, and oh man, do I sleep in. And I do buy packages of massages. This has reminded me to book one in.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? Listen to all the advice, and then do it your way. From my mother.

What’s your weakness when shopping? Furniture. I am a design freak.

Is there a beauty product you can’t live without? Christian Dior, Capture R60/80 Eye Cream. It works!

Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you. I left school when I was 16 and became a Club DJ. I lied about my age.

If asked would you do Eurovision again? Aahh….No.

If you were to do a cover of a song, what would it be? Steve Winwood – Higher Love. It’s on my list. It’s epic though.

How do you de stress at the end of a long day? De-stress? What’s that? I know I am in the best place in the world to do yoga and meditate, because everyone does here, but who has the 32 | anne louise october 2011

This month Adele caught up for a chat with Rosie, an electric mix of Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper merged with the image of Rosanna Arquette in desperately Seeking Susan.... So Rosie your now a solo artist.... Yes.’Rosie and the Goldbug’ broke up nearly two years ago now, it’s a long time actually but it feels like a heartbeat. I always wanted to be a solo artist at some point but really I’m only going for it now. I’ve just started gigging again and recorded a new EP “Black Cats and Black Stars. Do you write your own lyrics? Yes, writing my own songs is my favorite thing. I was doing it before I even realized what I was doing! As a kid I used to write lots of poetry, I would be singing new lyrics and poetry over the top of my classical pieces during piano lessons. What influence’s you? My parents are probably my biggest influence, they were both Folk musicians and they wanted me to have an education in music. I guess it was the formal education that really helped me. I never really planned to be a pop musician from a young age, it just naturally happened. You’ve got tremendous stage presence, do you get nervous? I do get a little bit nervous but I’ve always liked performing. The perfect combination is writing my own songs and then performing them on stage. At one point I wanted to be an actress. I found it really difficult saying other peoples words and being restricted creatively. As a musician at least I can be creative. I loved the facsinator you wore on stage, which you mentioned your mum made you. Do you get her involved a lot when it comes to designing your outfits? Yeah the Headdresses, she likes making them. She used to make her and dads costumes, they always had bits of glitter and stuff. She’s always collecting beads and sequins for me. Once she made me a dress out of a trouser leg! Wow! That just shows how petit you are! Yes, ell it was actually a stretchy trouser leg.... Where do you find inspiration? All of it’s very personal, even when it’s disguised as someone else it’s usually from my own experience’s. 36 | anne louise nov/dec 2011

Do you find it therapeutic? It’s the best thing ever if you’ve got any inner demons, helps to get them out. When I get to write about them and put them in a pop song it departmentalizes them into an area then there dealt with and I can move on. So does that mean you have to live a slightly turbulent life to keep coming up with the goods? I don’t think my life’s intentionally turbulent but I’m definitely someone who live’s life as much as I possibly can. Have you got a favorite quote or expression? Give me the boy at 8 and I’ll give you the man at 40. The sentiment that whatever happens to you at a young age kinda makes you who you are for the rest of your life.... How would you describe yourself? The basis is definitely pop and very commercial but with a twist. It’s organic. It’s who I am. Your live music is very energetic. If you tame it down in a recording studio it becomes something completely different. Is it important for you to keep the ‘realness’ about your music? 100%. You’ve got to make sure you don’t loose who you are and keep your focus and get the direction right, and i think I’ve captured that on this EP. PUMPKIN DELIGHTS Chestnut and Pumpkin Seed Croustade Cups with Butternut Squash and Cranberry Jus 175g wholemeal sliced bread, made into crumbs 1 ½ tsp mixed dried herbs 30g pumpkin seeds 75g unsalted butter (*or use hard margarine) 700g butternut squash, peeled and cut into 2cm cubes 1 very small onion, peeled and finely chopped (about 50g prepared weight) 160g cooked and peeled chestnuts, chopped 2 bay leaves 120ml vegetarian red wine 200g cranberry sauce (fresh home made is best!)

1 Preheat oven to 200C / 400F / Gas mark 6. Grease 4 x Yorkshire pudding tins with margarine or butter. Line a baking tin with foil. 2 To make the crust: Put breadcrumbs, mixed dried herbs and the pumpkin seeds into a large bowl. Melt 50g butter (*or hard margarine) and pour onto the breadcrumb mixture. Mix well, then divide equally between the four prepared Yorkshire pudding tins. Using the back of a spoon and your fingers, press evenly into the tins to form shallow cups. Pinch the edges between your fingers and thumb to make them firm – the edges should not be crumbly. Put in the oven and bake for about 15 minutes until crisp. Cool in the tins for about 5 minutes, then remove carefully and put on a cooling rack until ready to serve. 3 To make the filling: Melt the remaining 25g butter (or hard margarine) in a small saucepan. Put the prepared butternut squash in a bowl and toss it with half the melted butter and 2 tbs water. Put the butternut squash into the foil-lined baking tin and bake in the oven for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft. It should remain moist – if it seems to be drying out, add a very little more water. 4 Meanwhile, make the chestnut paté: sauté the onion in the remaining butter for about five minutes until soft. Add the chestnuts, bay leaf and 4 tbs of the red wine, together with 4 tbs water. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the bay leaf and mash the chestnuts to a moist spreading paté. If it is too dry, add a little more water. 5 Put the cranberry sauce in a small saucepan with the remaining red wine. Bring gently to the boil, stirring, then simmer for about 5 – 10 minutes until the sauce has reduced a little but is still runny. 6 To serve: divide the warm chestnut paté between the croustades, pile the butternut squash on top. Drizzle a little of the cranberry jus around the plate, then serve the rest separately.

600g pumpkin 4 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp maple syrup a pinch cinnamon powder 50g blanched almonds, chopped 225g trimmed leek, finely chopped 250g Arborio or Carnaroli risotto rice 100ml vegetarian dry white wine

900ml-1litre light vegetable stock 150g Swiss chard (leaves only) roughly shredded 1 ½ tbsp single cream season to taste To Serve: A squeeze lemon juice to taste

1 Heat oven to Gas 5/ 190C/ 375F. Cut the pumpkin into quarters, peel and de-seed. Then cut into thick slices/ segments (approx 12-15cm) and place in a roasting pan. Mix together 2 tbsp oil, maple syrup and cinnamon and drizzle over the pumpkin. Roast for 25-30 minutes until tender, take out of the oven and cut into large dice. 2 In a small frying pan heat 1 tsp oil and lightly toast the almonds until golden. Set aside. 3 Heat the remaining oil in a large frying pan and sauté the leek until soft. Add the rice and stir until the grains are well coated and slightly golden. Pour in the wine and stir until it is absorbed. 4 Add one ladle of hot stock and simmer until absorbed. Repeat. After 10 minutes add the chard and let wilt. Continue to add stock at intervals and cook until absorbed into the rice (you may not need all the stock). Season well with salt and pepper. 5 Once rice is tender but still very slightly al dente, add the cream and cook for a further minute before adding the pumpkin. Remove from heat, cover and rest for 2 minutes. When ready to serve sprinkle over the roasted almonds and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Pumpkin Ravioli For the Pasta: 400g “00“ flour or, alternatively, a pasta making flour 4 free range eggs 1 tsp salt 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil Filling Ingredients: 2 kg pumpkin, cut into quarters 15ml olive oil 1 large red onion, peeled and finely chopped 225g mostarda di frutta (alternatively you can use a mixed fruit chutney and add ½ tsp black pepper) 1 tsp salt ½ tsp ground nutmeg ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground ginger 125g vegetarian parmesan-style cheese grated To Serve: 30g butter 30g fresh parley chopped 150g vegetarian parmesan-style cheese

1 Combine the pasta ingredients, lightly knead and leave in a cling filmed bowl to refrigerate for 1 hour. 2 Heat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas Mark 6 and bake pumpkin until soft, approximately 30 minutes. 3 Remove the seeds and scoop out the baked pulp, finely chop and place into a bowl. 4 Heat the olive oil and sauté the onions. 5 Reduce heat and add the mostarda di frutta, salt, and ground spices, mix well. 6 Combine the parmesan cheese, pumpkin and onion/spice mixture into a bowl and set aside. 7 Using a pasta machine or fat rolling pin, roll out the pasta dough 15cm by 50cm and 2mm thickness. Layer the pasta sheets between tea towels to prevent them from drying. 8 Place a heaped teaspoon of the mixture into 2 rows at approximately 10cm distance apart. 9 Lightly spray the pasta with water and sandwich this with a top layer thus creating a sandwich effect. 10 Using a ravioli cutter, cut into 5 cm squares and place into boiling water as quickly as possible. 11 To serve, drain the pasta and return into the pan along with the butter, and parsley. Lightly mix and serve with the parmesan cheese.
