Just like being a delegate at an EYP session is so much more than talking about Europe, being a journalist is so much more than taking photos. Yes, you learn a whole heap of amazing skills; yes, you create loads of output you can be super proud of; and yes, you can really contribute to the memory everyone else takes away from the session, but the true value of EYP journalism lies in the combination of all this, creating something truly amazing for everyone involved that cannot be expressed in words. EYP isn’t just an organisation; it’s an experience.

So here we have it. This magazine, along with the numerous videos, endless creative projects, and a great abundance of photos, is the culmination of a huge amount of intense and extremely rewarding hard work from all members of the Media Team. The twelve of us arrived in Estonia a matter of days ago armed with a bundle of ideas and plans, then put our heads together and came up with a whole host more. What the media team has been producing throughout the session, however, is far from all they have done. As well as helping you to learn each other’s names in teambuilding, leading energisers when it all gets a bit much in committee work, doing Just Dance with you and even teaching you their own routines, they have been researching your topics alongside you, filming snippets of the session so you can have something to look back on when you return home, and taking photos to record the moments you’ll soon find yourself desperate to relive.

The Estonian identity is closely connected to the language and the mother tongue of just under 1.1 million people in the world. Russian is spoken by about 25% of people in Estonia and is heard mostly near the capital Tallinn and Eastern Estonian regions (in towns like Narva, Narva-Jõesuu and Kohtla-Järve).

AFTER SHORT NOTES ON MANAGING WIKIPEDIA AND EYP AFTERMATH Written by: Natali Khenkina The harsh reality of EYP events is that they are extremely finite; we never get more resolutions, cups of coffee or days that were originally planned. The dogma of EYP sessions that is rooted in their imminent ending is that after comes the PED. PED stands for Post-EYP Depression, a state of severe lodging for the session that is gone already, and it is a concept so

famous that it can be found on Wikipedia. On the other hand, what can’t be found there anyway? I had my share of severe PEDs, of course; 2 years ago I came back from Poland, took a yogurt from my fridge, and, instead of eating it, cried my eyes out into it – we used the same brand of yogurts on coffee-breaks. So, the

session-PED cycle went on and on, yogurts and all, devastating and nostalgic; then, on a tiny, but very special session in Lithuania I’ve had a casual, but very special talk about that with an EYP friend of mine, who has said “why would you be feeling so bad about something so amazing?” and made me give it a second thought. Really, why?

only do it because I feel like I owe it to my friend and his unconditional optimism; I do it because I have always felt that PED lacks alternatives and because if I can make any of you feel a bit better after surreally beautiful days of the Baltic Forum – I am taking my chances. After all, starting a new Wikipedia page is only a matter of time.

Post-EYP Optimism is an alternative that my friend has for PED and that I’m using now. It stands for all that there is beautiful, worthy, and soul-touching in EYP sessions; it is homage to EYP’s never-ending enthusiasm, to friendships that are not constraint by time and distances, to the future that we envisage, and to the world that is always a bit brighter tomorrow than today. Instead of being a source of distress, EYP was made to be an inspiration. Exploit that; why to spend your time depressing over yogurts when you can actually enjoy them?

UM

UM AN AN ENT ENT

PED really is a dogma – that’s why it is in Wikipedia, - but feeling it is a choice. I personally made not one, but two choices of that kind; I chose not to do PED if I can do Post-EYP Optimism instead; moreover, I chose to tell this story to you. I don’t Baltic Forum of EYP

results 1-7 Points : You are a non-conformer.

We may not be able to see the EYP radiating out of your pores in the form of electromagnetic EYP rays, but upon closer inspection, people will notice that the EYP spirit is there on the inside. Extra hours of sleep that you have had will allow your brain to be functioning at cyber speed. Europe will soon run out of problems due to the speed at which you are tackling them.

15-21 Points : You are classic EYP with a dash of fab. An EYP muggle (someone who has never done EYP) might not recognise your EYP sparkle right away, but just as any wizard will recognise another wizard, a fellow EYPer will recognise you. The thrill that runs through your body any time somebody mentions an NGO or 2020 target is like electricity. To you, EYP feels like Cinderella’s glass slipper.

It’s a strong possibility that you have played a role in the emergence of these stereotypes. The caffeine content of your blood is most likely higher than the oxygen content, and adrenaline is what keeps you going. Whether you want to admit it or not, you have memorised your committee’s topic overview, as well as others. Your name will soon be amongst those of the great EYP legends.

RGB: FC1A55

You wouldn’t want to scare people away with your EYP enthusiasm, so you try to keep it on the down low. However, people will eventually be drawn in by your EYP sparkle, no matter how modest you are. You have a friend from every country in Europe, and you never stop making more. Your grin brightens every Euroconcert, committee debate, and GA that you take part in. Your EYP journey is sure to be long and prosperous. RGB: #2E293A

GUIDE NEWCOMER’S GUIDE Written by: Ann Iosebidze Have you been looking forward to meeting all the participants of the forum? Did you overthink what you would wear during the General Assembly? Were you worried about different aspects that might have affected your productivity? Did the hope of success and the fear of failure escort you throughout this period? There is absolutely no need for you to answer these questions as every EYPer has gone through a similar process and is more or less familiar with the feelings that you are experiencing currently. your adventurous and daring journey as EYP is all about challenging yourself, regardless of how experienced you are. The topic of one’s hopes and fears is constantly accompanying EYP sessions and you might even get questioned about yours by your chairperson. Obviously, each and every single participant of the session faces his or her own difficulties but there is a number of fears that most of the delegates, especially newcomers, tend to share. The most common of which is the fear that you will not get along well with your committee members. In such a case, try not to set your expectations too high and be prepared for the fact that it is impossible to be liked by everyone. However, look around you and observe the officials who started out as complete strangers to each other just like you, and bear in mind that it is EYP that turned them into the united team you see at this point. And then, as the time passes, you will start realising that you have become a significant part of this huge and welcoming family. As for the academic part of the session, a barrier which is essential

In a way, hope is the reality we wish to see in the future, and fear is its shadow. The difficult part is overcoming that shadow with a hope. But as a famous quote of Charlie Chaplin goes “The failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of yourself.” Because in the end, what can be a better learning platform than a failure? So, don’t be afraid of daring and never let your fears decide your fate and lead you to giving up on your hopes. In brief, dream big and dare to fail, because that’s what EYP is all about.

UM

And lastly, while you might think that the most recognised and experienced delegates, the ones who seem above confident during the Committee Work or the GA, no longer experience the

fear that comes with the beginning of a new session, you would be wrong. The point is, having fears is absolutely normal and even necessary.

UM AN AN ENT ENT

for you to overcome and which you might face is the fear of not living up to the session’s academic standards. In order to overcome this fear, working on your own development is the best approach to be taken. Moreover, the delegates often have a certain feeling of guilt if the resolution of their committee fails to pass. But remember that it is your academic and personal growth together with the communications you gain what really matters, regardless of whether your resolution succeeds or not.

In the utmost north-eastern corner of the Baltic States, an old Viking trade route flows into the Finnish Gulf, thereby separating the Republic of Estonia and Russia. This natural border, the river Narva, is of great significance to its eponymous city. In fact, this river is so defining that it is portrayed in Narva’s flag: the turquoise representing the river and the yellow representing its bank. The city’s value is widely recognised throughout the country, as has been proven by the old Estonian 5-kroon bill, which has the border fortress of Narva and Ivangorod, the Russian city across the river, on its back side. Throughout history this city has drawn a lot of attention from various entities, mainly due

to its geographical position. It has been ruled over by Danes, Germans, Swedes and Russians. Nowadays, it is Estonia’s third largest city, epicentre of Estonia’s Russian minority, and an important industrial hub. Narva is the only place on earth where two warring cultures were so close to one another. From the 14th to the 17th century, the Order of Germanic Knights on the western bank and Russians on the eastern bank faced each other from their respective sides, seeing they were just an arrow flight away. During the Livonian War (1558 - 1583) the Russian army of Ivan the Terrible managed to annex Narva, with that establishing its first ever

port to the Baltic Sea. The town flourished under Swedish rule in the 18th century, it was often called the “Baroque pearl of the Baltic Sea.” During that time the Old Town of Narva was built. Following a big fire, which almost completely obliterated the town, only stone buildings were allowed - which was no problem financially, due to Narva’s thriving trade and commerce.

For several years following the reconstruction, the Soviet authorities prohibited the return of Narva’s pre-war residents, which radically altered the city’s ethnic composition. Nowadays over 90% of the current population

But Narva is not merely a border town, it also is a place where customs meet and influence each other. Throughout its turbulent history Narva has been part of many different nations, which is reflected in its rich culture and unique character. So what is a better place than Narva to bring Europe’s youth together? In a city where physical barriers are clearly present, you, as a participant of the Baltic Forum, are breaking down social and cultural barriers, building your own bridges in the process. UM

Throughout World War II the city was heavily affected by German and Soviet bombings, nearly 98% of the city was destroyed, meaning that the city had to be completely rebuilt. This is why today the city’s architecture predominantly consists of Soviet structures.

are Russian-speakers, mostly either Soviet-era immigrants from parts of the Soviet Union or their descendants. Until Estonia’s independence, following the breakup of the Soviet Union, the cities of Narva and Ivangorod were effectively one. Now the bridge marks marks the boundary of the European Union and a visa is needed to cross it.

UM AN AN ENT ENT

Narva became a major industrial town after the Industrial Revolution mid 19th century, using the river to power the factories. And even though the city was constantly subject of a tug of war between powers, its status was finally resolved in a referendum, in which the majority of Narva voted to become part of the autonomous Estonian Republic. The population had to fight for their independence a year later, when the Red Army invaded. However, they managed to drive the Russians away in just three months.

STORY Written by: Karl-Joosep Volmerson It happened on a cold windy Thursday evening, when all the delegates arrived in Narva, which in their opinion looked like a Caribbean Island owned by Kim Kardashian’s secret sister. At first, the environment felt risky. Wild and dangerous animals roamed around the field along with all the committees. After everyone had gone to sleep on that chilly Wednesday night, the Committee on Transport and Tourism had dramatic nightmares about being under fire and tormented in a red room of fetish.

The second day was firstly a cultural shock. People wore shoes, badges, fancy sweaters, hats, had beards and were fully clothed. The Committee on Security and Defence found it interesting and amusing. The people around all the delegates were friendly, positive, creative, crazy, but most of all, weird. This whole mess was turned into harmony, thanks to the officials who inspired delegates and made them happy. Also, enough sleep during the first night, as well as coffee and the sense of being a team did the trick. BALTIC FORUM

The incredible fact was that the venue, where the daily event took place, was a university which looked like a parliament building. Although the building was very formal and official, Baltic Forum of EYP

the committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality reached a conclusion. At first it felt like the cozy environment with Christmas music playing in the background and snow falling outside would make it hard to focus. The educational environment of the university combined fun serious work, which stimulated them to create discussions. The session was dynamic and everybody wanted to continue due to mysterious reasons that no one had answers for. The official committee work did not surprise the majority of the participants. The main reason people were surprised was the intelligent and clever delegates, who had already predicted the content of the upcoming day. Still, some bits were different, as The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs III thought of people fighting with chairs, also known as chairpersons. One of the main things that delegates wanted to take away from the session was positive emotions. From time to time people burst into tears, because all the jokes and puns were too funny and everybody kept laughing hard. The Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection stated that European Youth Parliament events are special. Particularly the Baltic

Positive emotions were felt by everybody, and a huge amount of credit belongs to the organisers of the event. The committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs II thought the session was perfectly held because of the CoffeeChairs (the organisers). The delegates kept demanding bigger cups for coffee, but they reached an easy solution – drink the coffee and refill the cup. It is as easy as it sounds.

ish its wonderful journey. The amount of fun, amazing games, intense discussions and delicious food at the Eurovillage became a reason for why the people did not want to return to everyday life. The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs I solved the problem very easily. Their solution was cooperation, a different perspective and analysis of the situation. This was a chance to continue everything. Staying in contact with the friends people made, having the enthusiasm and inspiration, thus being active gives another possibility to experience everything again, in a different way. WHY EYP WHAT KEEPS YOU IN EYP? Written by: Mighel Molenkamp & Yulia Nagirnyak

There are so many different stories hidden after every EYPer. Some came voluntarily, other joined because of someone’s advice. Nonetheless, there’s one feature uniting them: it’s not that easy to leave when you once started.

The most bright moment is the 15th NSC that I head organised. All the time being an organiser I thought I would never do this anymore. But after you start thinking what you can do differently next time. New ideas always drive you to keep up. There are such many things to improve and then see your ideas incarnated.

Delegates should be teachable. I was selling book from door to door in the US and learned something even there. Every knowledge is useful. In EYP some people learn how to talk to other people, others learn how to feel comfortable in front of big crowd; some of them train to shape opinions, and some gain the factual knowledge. My first time when I played Abigail persuaded me to stay. I was wondering how my moral standards could change. I am a big fan of academic knowledge that I can receive here. My intelligence has grown quite a lot. EYP made me realise I know nothing, but I want to know so much more! EYP is also about self-confidence. Once I had to give a lecture about imperfection of humans and how to deal with this. It probably is a bit selfish, but this lecture was my brightest EYP moment. My advice to beginners is talk to everyone. To delegates, officials, to somebody you have not talked to yet. It is worth it.
