fido fuel bioregenerative trail light
fido fuel
bioregenerative trail light
a biowaste recepticle and bio-fueled park trail light
pooches and parks go hand-in-hand in san francisco. unfortunately, so does fido’s waste. biowaste not only adds to landfills, it can contaminate the water supply. fido fuel was designed to harness this waste, convert it into useable fuel, then burn that fuel to light parks.
an estimated 120,000 pooches call san francisco home.
.
17
nearly 4% of sf’s residential waste is animal waste — that’s almost 10 million tons of waste per year that is added to landfills.
estimates suggest that 1 ton of animal waste could produce 50 gallons of dieselequivalent fuel, enough to heat a house in new england for 2 weeks.
an anaerobic digester converts biowaste into methane and carbon dioxide rich biogas suitable for energy production. a biproduct is nutrient-rich solids that can be used as fertilizer.
18
the form language of fido fuel came from the association of dogs with fire hydrants and the iconic proportions of trashcans. it’s toyetic quality (dog tag and paw prints) appeals immediately to dogs and their owners.

fido fuel was designed to have the ergonomic proportions of a standard trash can. the reflectors around the burners cause the light to shine downward towards the ground, giving an ambiance lighting so that park explorers could still enjoy the night’s sky. approximately 2 week cycle time

lid incorporates three bag dispensers that dispenses biodegradable poop bags.
foot pedal opens lid, so depositing biomass is hands-free.
lights ignite at dusk, burning the captured methane from the anaerobic digester.
20
the features and benefits are: dog waste is a renewable energy source; power generation can occur onsite; bioregeneration reduces landfill waste and emissions; and use of biomass reduces chance of ground water contamination.
21
municipal parks can be operated completely off the grid, reducing energy, personnel, and maintenance costs.
