BUTTERFLIES BLURBS – ROUND 2 …. 2nd April 2010

Butterflies U9’s – Modies What a long way our U9 Butterflies have come over the last year! Butterflies U8’s – Modies Despite the sun shining & it being warmish at all of our houses, it still managed to be freezing at the netball courts! After last week’s victory, the girls were keen to do it all again against All Stars. We were much more evenly matched this week as this team had also played modis last year. The Butterflies were kept scoreless in the first third but managed to fight back & go on a goal scoring blitz in the second third. Just how many goals that was, we are not sure as our scorer (who shall remain nameless) was perhaps a little distracted by much chatter on the ' sidelines. The majority agreed that the game finished in a 5-all draw. The girls were wonderful in defence & again their ability to move the ball down the court is improving rapidly. Congratulations to Lily who was the happy recipient of "Girl of the Game" and will hopefully manage to return the trophy in one piece next Saturday. Looking forward to another entertaining encounter this weekend. Well done girls, you’re playing so well and working beautifully as a team. Cath Mc

Saturday’s game showed that all the girls have really honed up their skills and are now fierce competition for any team in the League. Marrickville All Stars gave us a run for our money in the first third of the game with the ball around their goal most of the time. But our strong defence stopped them from capitalising on this and no goals were scored. By the second third we pulled our game together and it became a very even match. All the Butterflies worked together as a team and the chains of passes up and down the court brought gasps of pleasure from the mums & dads on the sidelines. Well done to Ella and Holly for two great goals. Welcome to Sasha, a great asset to the team and Girl of the Game this week. And thanks to Jaci for all her hard work in bringing the girls up to this high standard. This is just the beginning of the season and no doubt we will continue to get better and better as the year continues.

Butterflies U10’s What a fantastic match Saturdays game was for all the girls in the 10's. We played Mascot 24, and as usual their players seemed a good head & shoulders above us in height, but our girls played really well as a team & we had more possession in the first 2 quarters. Our goal shooting was on target thanks to Tiarne & Grace. We were slightly ahead going into the third quarter & our girls continued to be impressive in attack & defence. The game went down to the wire with an exciting last quarter, it was neck & neck until the last few second when Mascot scored the final goal on the whistle. Our girls were exhausted but elated with how they played, us parents were also very proud as it was one of the best & closest matches we have seen the girls play. " Girl of the Game " was Grace, and the final score was 8-7. Congratulations 10's on an outstanding match.

Butterflies Under 12’s Our gallant 12s fought a mighty match against Randwick Rugby, who had quite a few representative players in their team. The teams were actually very evenly matched at the end of the second quarter, with only two goals separating them. Steph and Sarah did a fantastic job keeping the opposition from scoring more goals than they needed to, and Meg, Grace, Kiarna and Sara Downey were also great in defence, spending a lot of time running themselves, and the opposition ragged!! Olivia and Tami were instrumental in getting points on the board for the Butterflies and once again proved a formidable force in the goal ring, with some fabulous shooting and great team work.Randwick defeated the Butterflies 25-17. The team need to iron out a few kinks and concentrate on some of their passes – they gave away some valuable points to Randwick through some careless passing. But this will only improve throughout the season. Also girls, you are a great team and need to always be confident on the court – never let the opposition intimidate you in the game!! Player of the Match was Tami Solomonson. Congratulations Tami on a fine effort!!! You were there in all the right places in that goal ring! Saturday’s game (9th April) against Mascot (Court 2) should be a great game for the Butterflies. See you Courtside. Annette Mazzeri

Butterflies Blurbs – Rnd 2 Butterflies U13’s Purple Well it was another windy week for our netballers, with the weather threatening to rain again. With Rosie away, Dina changed the positions around a little to make sure our defence was strong. First quarter Rebecca Ryan showed us how accurate her goal shooting was. Second quarter she did it again. Before we knew it, we were 11 nil up. Then we changed positions once more and Randwick rugby put on two fresh players. It was nearly a disaster with Randwick scoring seven goals to our two. However fourth quarter everyone played really well and we won the day by 10 goals. Player of the match goes to Rebecca Ryan for her excellent shooting. Jordan and Luisa both deserve a mention for their persistence and fervour. Dina and Michele

Butterflies U13’s Blue

Butterflies v Marrickville All Stars.

13 Blues have put another good score on the board defeating the All Stars 40 12. It was a true team effort with Tatum scoring 12 out of 20 attempts and Holly, Brooke and Sarah all shooting (and rebounding) well, to make up the total. Shanelle was solid in defence taking 10 Intercepts and Sinead had a clean game on the Wing D with no penalties called against her - well done! We had a tight third quarter scoring 6 goals to their 5, but Catie and Montana did some hard work through the mid court in the final quarter, delivering great passes into the shooters to ensure we came away with the win. Girl of the game this week is Emma, who had an absolute blinder, showing her fitness running as the centre and taking 17 (yes 17! I was counting!) intercepts during the game. A Big Thanks to our Umpire, Tayla McElhinney, who is doing an awesome job and all the supporters.....for their support, see you Saturday! Marianne

Butterflies Newsletter No. 5… pg 4 Butterflies Blurbs – Rnd 1 Butterflies U14’s What a courages effort by all. With most of the girls playing up an age, this team is really performing well. We are not getting the points on the board however we are getting to know each other. I (Jenny) am still trying to figure out the best position for each girl to play - Once this is sort I know that the wins will happen. The girls have been fantastic going in new positions (some have not played there before) to help their team mates out. The thing that has stood out with this team, is that they are playing for each other and as I have always said to teams that I coach, 'A Champion team will always beat a team of Champions' this really applies to this team; they will win soon because they are playing as a team. The other impressive thing is that we are the talk of the 14' - Division 1 the other coaches of this grade are telling me that it is a good grade with everyone matching everyone - every game is a contest - and they are looking forward to playing us - they know that when we get it together we will be hard to beat ! - Well done girls, keep your chin up things are about to happen! - Believe me! Jenny M

Butterflies Inters – Purple The Inters team were up against some tough opposition right at the start of the match. Randwick Rugby were strong from start to finish but the Butterflies had them rattled and were up by two goals at the end of the second quarter ( 8-6 ). Amy, Holly and Kate played fast, furious and formidable netball in defence in the goal area – they just have to ensure that 3 feet is 3 feet! Sometimes the umpire was with us and other times there was a bit of controversy!! All part of the game!!! Grace and Elli were also instrumental in gaining some ground for the team – there are only two words in their vocab: fast and fast!!! It seems to have rubbed off on the rest of the team too, as sometimes the play was ridiculously fast and we were back to the centre pass before you could blink!!! Alex and Brenna proved a winning combination in the goal ring but Randwick’s defence was very strong…and very tall!!! Jaci was the additional “petrol in the tank” that the team needed – she proved to be a most valuable centre, running all over the place and regaining a lot of ground for the team! Great work Jaci – you are our Player of the Match this week! Congratulations! Randwick defeated the Butterflies 27-18. Unfortunately, one of our key players, Holly Gooch, went over on her ankle in the last quarter and sustained torn ligaments. She played with such gusto and we wish Holly a speedy recovery! Girls, you are looking like a real well-oiled machine out there on the court – it is very exciting to watch you play together and we look forward to your next game on 30th April ( there is a forfeit this week ). See you courtside. Annette Mazzeri

Butterflies Inters Blue – Inters Blue had a really great start to their season with a great win over Randwick Rugby 15, 37 to 5. If not for the wind the score would have been a lot higher. With that said, all the shooters know to put in some more practise to counter the playing conditions. Most of the players have played together at same stage over the years & found it very easy to slot into a rhythm without too much trouble. The players tend to organise themselves with their own idea of who should go where & why. As a consequence the Blues managed to keep their opponents to only one goal in the second half. A credit to their own intuition & enthusiasm. Well done girls and keep it up.
