DISCOVERY CENTRE HERRING ISLAND MELBOURNE, VICTORIA
Herring Island is a surprising patch of bushland in the middle of the Yarra River within very close proximity to the Melbourne CBD. The small island has evolved over many years from a build-up of silt in the river. It’s been re-vegetated with indigenous flora, visited by much fauna and is the site of the Summer Arts Festival. Currently on the island, there’s a picnic area and an old scout’s hall, used as an art gallery and function centre. The island is accessable via Parks Victoria Punt on the weeks, which leaves from Como Landing on Alexandra Parade. There are currently nine permanent sculptures across the island. The most recent (from 2001) is a sculpture called Falling Fence by John Gollings & Samantha Slicer, which is a line of bare wood planks tilted gradually in the manner of the red sticks along the Tullamarine freeway, and designed to merge in with its surrounding landscape once it’s engulfed by the surrounding vegetation. The purpose of the Discovery Centre is to create a place for cultural exchange. The Discovery Centre located on the Southern End of the island, is situated near the southern pier and compromises of four ‘discovery’ spaces that reveal the contrasting histories of placemaking in Melbourne’s pre-colonial and early colonial settlement, a place of apology to the indigenous Australians and a place of contemporary cultural exchange in the form of an amphitheatre.
