Editors Letter Message Welcome

This edition of Women’s Biz Magazine June 2024 is a special one. Technically, every issue is special to me, because we choose to feature people who are choosing to take the plunge in business, to discover success, happiness and impact. I remain in awe of the people I meet and connect with via Women’s Biz Global and I am so grateful to everyone who has championed me, as much as I have championed them.

We truly are all in this together.

And because we are an amazing collective of powerhouses, featuring as our cover and newly signed author with Women’s Biz Publishing is Fran Wilson. I connected with Fran a number of years ago when I appeared as a guest on his virtual event, and instantly I knew I was in the presence of a talented, purposeful and inspiring man.

Now we are in the exciting process of bringing his debut memoir to life through our publishing house. Not only is Fran our first signed solo author with Women’s Biz Global, but he is also our first male author too!

As a career CEO who has

always supported women in business, it may seem against the brand to be championing men… but really, it’s got nothing to do with gender, because it is our role to support all those who want to make a difference in the world. When I first read Fran’s book proposal, I was instantly enamoured by his raw honesty and desire to share his life with the world.

Fran’s story is a powerful one - where he talks about being adopted as a baby, his fears of abandonment and rejection, and how he discovered light in the darkest of moments of his life, that could have collapsed his entire world. But he didn’t collapse - he went on to write his book and spark a conversation around men’s mental health, and how rejection and acceptance go hand-in-hand.

We are thrilled to be on this journey with Fran.

Perhaps you also have a story to tell?

Perhaps you have

experienced loss, isolation and stormy waters?

Perhaps there is a book in you, but you need the support and expertise in bringing it to life?

Women’s Biz Publishing consists of a dedicated and highly skilled team of writers, designers, editors and creatives - where every story is welcomed with open arms.

Not only are we heralding Fran, but we are also showcasing a number of other wonderful articles in this month’s magazine. We are determined to make the world a smaller place for those seeking a global community. We are determined to enhance the profiles of business owners and entrepreneurs eager to make a difference. We are determined to strive for excellence. We are determined to be the best cheer squad there is, so join us in celebrating the Women’s Biz community. Happy reading.

What inspired you to write a book?

It wasn’t just one event that triggered the creation of my debut book, but an accumulation of many sad, and painful experiences in my life. However, my epiphany moment came at the end of a toxic relationship that I needed to step away from. One morning on my way to work, I somehow managed to engage in a profound conversation with myself. At the time, I had no car, so I was in an internal dialogue with myself on the number four bus on my way to work at six in the morning. I told myself that I had enough content around rejection and abandonment to share with the world. I couldn’t believe that I was having this conversation with myself, but without hesitation, I knew my calling was to write a book! By the time I got to work, I had drafted a chapter outline in the notes section on my smartphone. I felt (and continue to feel) that I was born to write

this book and on this one particular morning, sitting on a bus, the universe was delivering me a clear message that it was time to get my story out into the world. I didn’t just write this book for me, I wrote it for all those needing a positive impact in their lives, who are also experiencing trauma from rejection and abandonment, and how they can find true happiness.

Why your book, now?

I am not the only person who has faced traumatic experiences, whilst attempting to survive a painful journey. It can feel incredibly lonely navigating adversity and loss. So, I want to offer people a sense of hope and belief that they too can overcome this fear of rejection and find hope in the face of poor mental health and inner demons. It is the light within us that can shine brightly for those in the dark, acting as a beacon of hope for those who need it. If I did not act now to help other people, then

I wouldn’t be living with the integrity and purpose I know resides deep within my soul. I am a powerful, authentic, loving leader and I stand for growth, freedom, and transformation. Therefore, it is my duty to serve others with the support and respect they deserve.

What are the key milestones of your story, to the point of signing with Women's Biz Publishing?

Gosh, I feel as though I’ve experienced many milestones in my life, including family abandonment, adoption, failed intimate relationships, professional job losses, as well as poor mental health as a man, all of the stigma attached to these hurdles are highlighted within my book. In my story, I share moments where I felt at my lowest, experienced depression and anxiety, and at times, moments where I simply wanted to “give up.” Somehow, I found the strength deep within me to strive and survive.

Remarkably, I thought of only one place that could rescue me: Women’s Biz Publishing.

Alongside Annie Gibbins, founder Women’s Biz Publishing and their creative team, it felt like they could provide me the hope I craved, saving me from the dark place that I found myself in. In the judgement-free community, Women’s Biz Publishing recognised a potential that I didn’t completely see in my space, and through a safe space of incredible and unique people, my book (and me) found my literary home.

I have every faith and confidence in Women’s Biz Publishing. I know that with their guidance and support, my story will be shared with the world, and touch those who need it.

Women’s Biz Publishing believes in me, my journey, my story and I’m eternally grateful for their support. But most importantly, I now believe in myself and that’s pretty darn incredible!

Why is it important to highlight mental health as an ongoing conversation?

For me, mental health is something every human has to manage 24/7, 365 days a year. Having recently completed a mental health first aid training course, I am now aware of how serious this can be.

Mental health encompasses all types of health, it’s related to the way we think, feel and behave. We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. We can have good or poor mental health, or be diagnosed with a mental health condition (mental ill health), just as we can have good or poor physical health, or a physical medical condition.

Poor mental health is a state that has a negative impact on the way we think, feel and behave. Poor mental health can cause distress or inability in social, work, or family settings, and impact daily life, including how we relate and interact with those around us. It can even be as serious as having suicidal thoughts, which may lead to taking action on these thoughts. This is a state that I was trapped in for so long and I’m now a real advocate for supporting mental health campaigns and charity organisations. It is a silent killer, but as a mental health first-aider, we can be the first responders to seeing the signs in people. This knowledge can literally be a life-saver and what a privilege this is.

What can we learn from a male's perspective into toxic relationships?

This is a highly sensitive and important question, so I want to offer all those affected by abuse in relationships the respect, understanding and support they deserve.

However, I truly do believe we need to understand that men are not always the perpetrators and women are not always the victims. This gendered understanding is crucial in helping men who are victims of domestic abuse, including mental, physical and emotional abuse.

I

can honestly say that although I was in a toxic and abusive relationship for over five years, I gave it my everything to love and support my partner. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for her. The last thing I would ever do is to manipulate and control the person I love. However, there seems to be a stigma or misconception that men cannot be a victim of coercive control. This is certainly not the case. Yes, I agree that some men are truly selfish and act in a horrific way, but not all men are bad.

I don’t have a bad bone, let alone cell, in my body.

Maybe my traumatic life has taught me how to only show love, respect and kindness towards other people. This perhaps has been one of my problems in life; I can be too nice, and people may choose to take advantage of my vulnerability and insecurities. It is important to remember that women can behave in the very same way and that everyone deserves love, respect and kindness, regardless of gender.

When did you discover you'd been adopted? And, how did you deal with this news?

For as long as I can remember, I have always known I was adopted.

My adopted parents told me at really a young age that I was adopted, and it’s all I’ve ever known. I admire my parents for doing it this way, as I don’t know how I’d react if they announced it to me later in life when I was older. I accepted it for what it was. It felt “normal” to me and I never really questioned or examined my adoptive past, until perhaps writing this book. My parents have given me a beautiful life, and I am eternally grateful to them.

How has learning of your adoption shaped you as an inspirational role model?

I see adoption as a positive outcome for anyone. I was taken away from a toxic environment that I did not deserve to be in. It has given me the chance to write my own story, in a family where I am truly loved and cared for. It has enabled me to acknowledge and accept my entrance into this world and appreciate that life is not easy and straightforward. I have adapted and pivoted to a new identity, which has allowed me to embark on the most amazing self-discovery journey of healing, self-love and forgiveness. This is part of my mission in life; to give people the reassurance, belief and hope that life can be good and that we must remain positive, with gratitude in abundance.

What advice would you give people about mental health management?

Don’t ignore it. This is such

a huge part of your life and should be one of your priorities. Recognise and acknowledge how you’re feeling.

Listen to your emotions. Look out for one another and most importantly, be kind to yourself.

If someone had a book in them, what advice would you give them?

Go for it. Get it out there. Don’t allow limiting beliefs or other people’s opinions stop you from publishing your book. Your voice matters, you matter, and it’s important to share how you’re feeling. You and your story are worthy, and you do have a purpose in life.

How is your book going to change the world and why?

I don’t know if this will change the world, but I hope it does (humility really does go a long way!), But, I'd like to change the world in my own way, and this could be the book that every household will place on their bookshelves. I want this book to have a positive impact on everyone who reads it. Mental health and overcoming the fear of rejection are so important, and I’m writing this book because there are ways out there to heal, grief, and overcome pain.

For me, my solution is offering hope, support, and guidance in abundance.

IN RECENT YEARS, THE CONCEPT OF REMOTE WORK HAS TRANSFORMED FROM A LUXURY TO A NECESSITY, OPENING UP A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES FOR WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS. AS WE CONTINUE TO ADAPT TO THE NEW NORMAL, IT’S CLEAR THAT REMOTE WORK IS HERE TO STAY. BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR WOMEN IN BUSINESS, AND HOW CAN WE HARNESS ITS POTENTIAL TO DRIVE SUCCESS?

THE FUTURE OF REMOTE WORK FOR WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

Embracing the remote work revolution

The remote work revolution represents a fundamental shift in how we work. For many women entrepreneurs, it has levelled the playing field, offering greater flexibility, reduced commute times, and the ability to balance personal and professional responsibilities more effectively. But with these advantages come unique challenges that require thoughtful strategies and tools.

The benefits of remote work

Flexibility and work-life balance:

One of the most significant advantages of remote work is the flexibility it provides. Women can design their schedules around their personal lives, making it easier to juggle family commitments and business responsibilities. This flexibility often leads to a better work-life balance, reducing burnout and increasing overall job satisfaction.

Imagine attending your child’s school event without worrying about missing an important meeting. Remote work makes it possible to integrate personal and professional lives seamlessly. However, establishing clear boundaries to prevent work from spilling over into personal time is essential. Setting specific work hours and creating a dedicated

workspace can help maintain this balance.

Cost savings: Working remotely can significantly reduce overhead costs associated with running a physical office. For entrepreneurs, this means more resources can be allocated to growing the business, investing in technology, or expanding the team.

Consider the expenses that come with maintaining an office space - rent, utilities, office supplies, and commuting costs. By eliminating or reducing these expenses, you can reinvest that money into areas that directly contribute to business growth, such as marketing, product development, or hiring skilled professionals.

Access to a global talent pool: Remote work removes geographical barriers, allowing women entrepreneurs to hire talent from anywhere in the world. This access to a diverse talent pool can bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the business.

When you’re not limited by location, you can find the best person for the job, regardless of where they live. This can lead to a more diverse and dynamic team, often a source of creativity and innovation. Different cultural backgrounds and experiences can provide unique insights and approaches to problem-solving.

The challenges of remote work

Maintaining productivity: While the flexibility of remote work is a boon, it can also be a doubleedged sword. Distractions at home and the lack of a structured environment can impact productivity.

Have you ever found yourself working from the couch and getting distracted by household chores or family members? Creating a designated work area, free from distractions, can help you stay focused and productive. Additionally, setting specific work hours and sticking to them can create a routine that enhances efficiency.

Communication and collaboration: Remote work can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation and hinder effective communication. Utilising collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, and Trello can help bridge the gap, ensuring that team members stay connected and projects remain on track.

Regular check-ins, virtual meetings, and collaborative platforms can simulate the office environment and keep everyone aligned. Encouraging open communication and fostering a culture of transparency can also help mitigate the feelings of isolation that can come with remote work.

Setting boundaries: Without the physical separation between work and home, it’s easy to blur the lines and end up working longer hours. Setting clear boundaries and sticking to them is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

It’s tempting to keep working when your office is just a few steps away, but overworking can lead to burnout. Set specific times for starting and ending your workday, and resist the

urge to check emails or work on projects outside those hours. Communicate these boundaries to your family and team to ensure everyone respects your personal time.

Strategies for success

Leverage technology: Invest in reliable technology that supports remote work. This includes high-speed internet, project management software, communication tools, and cybersecurity measures. These tools will streamline operations and enhance productivity.

Reliable technology is the backbone of successful remote work. Ensure you have a stable internet connection, up-to-date hardware, and software that facilitates smooth communication and project management. Cybersecurity is also crucial to protect your business data from potential threats.

Prioritise self-care: Remote work can be demanding, so it’s important to prioritise selfcare. Schedule regular breaks, practice mindfulness, and engage in activities that rejuvenate you. Remember, a healthy entrepreneur is a successful entrepreneur.

Take breaks throughout the day to stretch, walk, or meditate. Engage in activities that help you relax and recharge, whether it’s reading a book, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing a hobby. A well-rested mind is more productive and creative.

Build a support network:

Connect with other women entrepreneurs who are navigating the remote work landscape. Join online communities, attend virtual networking events, and seek out mentorship opportunities. Building a support network can provide valuable insights, encouragement, and a

sense of camaraderie.

Networking is more important than ever in a remote work environment. Participate in online forums, attend webinars, and join groups that focus on women entrepreneurs. Sharing experiences, challenges, and successes with others in similar situations can provide valuable support and inspiration.

Embrace continuous learning: The remote work environment is constantly evolving. Stay ahead of the curve by investing in continuous learning. Take online courses, attend webinars, and read industry blogs to keep your skills and knowledge up to date.

The business world is always changing, and continuous learning is key to staying relevant. Explore new tools, techniques, and trends in your industry. Online courses and webinars offer convenient ways to enhance your skills and gain new insights without leaving your home.

Looking ahead: The future of remote work

As remote work continues to evolve, it’s crucial for women entrepreneurs to stay adaptable and proactive. Here are some predictions and trends to watch:

Hybrid work models: Many businesses are adopting hybrid work models, combining remote and in-office work. This approach offers the best of both worlds, providing flexibility while maintaining opportunities for face-to-face collaboration.

Hybrid models allow for a balance between the benefits of remote work and the advantages of inperson interaction. Companies may implement flexible schedules where employees can choose the best days to work from the office or home, depending on their tasks and preferences.

Increased focus on well-being: Companies are recognising the importance of employee well-being and are likely to invest more in mental health resources, wellness programs, and flexible work arrangements.

Well-being initiatives might include mental health days, access to counselling services, wellness workshops, and flexible working hours. By prioritising employee health, companies can enhance productivity and job satisfaction.

Advancements in technology:

Emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are set to revolutionise remote work, offering immersive collaboration experiences and enhancing productivity.

Imagine attending a virtual meeting in a 3D environment where it feels like you’re in the same room as your colleagues. Such advancements can make remote work more interactive and engaging, bridging the gap between remote and in-person interactions.

Sustainable work practices:

Remote work can contribute to sustainability efforts by reducing commuting and lowering carbon footprints. Entrepreneurs can leverage this trend by adopting eco-friendly practices and promoting sustainability within their businesses.

Encouraging remote work can significantly reduce carbon emissions from daily commutes.

Additionally, companies can implement green practices such as reducing paper usage, promoting digital communication, and supporting renewable energy initiatives.

Final thoughts

The future of remote work is bright, and for women entrepreneurs, it presents a unique opportunity to innovate, grow, and succeed. Remember, the key to thriving in remote work lies in staying adaptable, connected, and committed to continuous learning. Let’s embrace the future with confidence and create a thriving remote work environment that empowers us to achieve our dreams.

CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT ARE SERIOUS PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS THAT HAVE LONG TERM IMPACTS ON HEALTH, WELLBEING, AND LIFE OUTCOMES.

ACCORDING TO THE CENTRES FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC)1, AN ASTOUNDING ONE IN SEVEN CHILDREN ARE AFFECTED BY ABUSE AND NEGLECT, SO IT’S NO WONDER THERE’S BEEN AN EXPLOSION OF MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS ACROSS THE USA.

FAMILY EXPLORES HOW TO MOVE ON FROM ABUSE TO LIVE A FULFILLED LIFE NEW BOOK THE QUEST FOR

Common types of abuse include physical, sexual, emotional, neglect, and religious – all of which were experienced by Jessica Clancy, who recently published a book entitled The Quest For Family which outlines her life experiences, and how she has been able to move beyond the pain and suffering of childhood mistreatment, to a fulfilled life of love and happiness and the creation of a new family unit.

The book explores her struggles from childhood to adulthood, with her life severely impacted by the actions of her negligent mother who remarried several times and moved her around the USA, where she was exposed to physical, emotional and sexual abuse, as well as neglect and domestic violence.

As she says, “Our lives can often feel like shattered glass, and once it breaks, it is impossible to put back together on our own. We try to pick up the pieces, but just hurt ourselves more, often feeling hopeless and helpless.”

However, with sheer grit, and a strong faith in

God, she was able to find peace and redemption to break the chains of her past to become firstly a cosmetologist, then a registered dietitian, with a master’s degree in nutrition and a business minor. She is now a specialist dialysis dietitian, and a published author.

One of her proudest achievements has been to create a happy family with her husband, and their two children aged 12 and eight.

“I believe our past does not define us. It is only part of the journey if we allow it to stretch and grow. I am not defined by the things that happened to me,” she says.

“Just as your past does not define you, remember to love others and not make judgements on their past or mishaps. You don’t have to stay hiding in the darkness of your past. You can step into the light to be exposed and redeemed.

“Family may not be inclusive of genealogy and genetic ancestors. It can have many different and implausible shapes and sizes. We all have kindred hearts drawn to each other and community, as we are not made to be alone.”

20 Tips for Healing and Redemption

1. Find faith and pray. Prayer changes things.

2. Learn to read and strive to learn; teach your kids to read.

3. Seek mentors and wise counsel. Find those who are successful in their own lives. Welcome constructive criticism.

4. Don’t be afraid to dream; set big goals and work hard.

5. Travel. Focus on simple things; nature, and the beauty around you. Seek to learn about other families and their cultures.

6. Don’t be afraid to talk about your experiences, good and bad. It is healing and helps you understand them better. If you are able to, speak to a professional counsellor or someone you trust.

7. Exercise, or be active, and focus on eating healthy foods.

“From my own life experience, I wish to encourage others who have been affected by childhood abuse to know that they can move beyond the trauma to live the life they were meant to live,” says Jessica.

If you or someone you know has suffered from abuse, this book can help heal past hurts and

Research shows exercise can be like medicine for our minds and may help treat depression and sadness.

8. Accept your body. Don’t depend on weight loss gimmicks like pills, drinks, and unrealistic diet cycles. If it came in a pill and worked, everyone would be thin.

9. Journal about the experiences that impact you deeply.

10. Don’t let others define you, especially through social media.

11. Forgive. This will release you from much pain and help you receive your blessings.

GREAT PERSONAL BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY EMPOWERING WOMEN IN BUSINESS THROUGH

No matter what business you are in, creating a great first impression is crucial to attracting and impressing your potential customers.

With much of our business communications these days taking place digitally, it is important that we greet our audience with a strong online presence. Think of it as a virtual handshake or greeting. By being personal and approachable on our digital platforms, our presence and personal brand inspire confidence and invite our audience to explore a potential business relationship with us.

Great visuals that grab attention not only reduce the likelihood of your audience continuing to scroll past your content, but also present you in the best light and speak volumes about your professionalism.

Since all of this contributes to the overall success of your business, I highly encourage all business owners and entrepreneurs to invest in great personal branding photos.

What is personal branding photography?

Personal branding photography is a genre of portrait photography that focuses on capturing authentic, storytelling images that tell others who you are, as well as visually representing your personal brand, values, and professional identity.

Is personal branding photos worth it?

The value of personal branding photos lies in their ability to authentically represent the individual's brand and resonate with their target audience. These photos can enhance perceived professionalism, build trust and connect with the audience, and help you to differentiate yourself from your competitors, as well as increase brand visibility and recognition.

As a professional portrait and personal branding photographer, I have also experienced the benefits of developing my brand through professional imagery. Sharing portraits of myself, as well as those I create for my clients, has opened doors and helped to grow my business.

As well as showcasing my work and offerings online, I also share with my audience how I work and what it is like working with me. I establish my brand and vision as a professional photographer through social media engagement, client testimonials, media features, international awards, in-person events and the like. They help my potential clients to recognise and trust me. Needless to say, my branding activities are supported by my branding photos, often taken as self-portraits!

Key attributes of personal branding photos

You may want to bear in mind the following key attributes regarding the development of your personal branding photos:

1. Authenticity

Personal branding photos should highlight your personality, passions, values and strengths in a relatable manner. This is crucial in building trust and connecting with your customers on a deeper level.

2. Storytelling

Effective branding photography tells stories about you and your journey. They become your visual narratives to humanise the brand.

3. Consistency

Personal branding photography ensures that the images align with the brand's aesthetic and messaging. This consistency helps you reinforce the brand identity of your business and makes it more recognisable across various marketing channels.

4. Versatility

By capturing a wide variety of consistent-looking images, whether they be polished portraits, lifestyle moments, behind-the-scenes footage or action shots, they can be used for multiple and varied marketing channels.

What if I don’t look great in photos?

If you hesitate to put yourself out there as your brand because you are camera shy or believe you are not photogenic, please do not think that you are alone. I dislike

having

my photos taken too, believe it or not!

It is true that we do not always look the same in photos as we do in real life, and that’s because photography compacts threedimensional subjects into twodimensional images. Our physical features become compressed. However, this does not mean that it is not possible to achieve great portrait photos.

As I developed my portrait photography skills over the past decades, I noticed that various technical elements could help restore or enhance how we look in photos. These elements (or tricks) include posing, angles, lighting, use of best and appropriate photographic equipment. Styling and the setting for the photoshoot are important too!

When you work with an experienced professional portrait or personal branding photographer, who knows how to get the best possible photographs of you, you will come away with many images of yourself that you like and feel excited to share with your online audience.

Empowering women through portrait photography

Being a woman myself, I understand completely that how we look affects our confidence. When we look good, we feel good. We have the self-belief to achieve our dreams. That is why, in more recent years, I have chosen to focus on photographing females and specialising in portraits of women.

By dispelling the myth that some of us can never look great in photos, I aspire to empower and reinstate the inner

confidence in women through portrait photography. This is especially important for women in business. After all, your sparks of confidence inspire confidence in others about your products and services.

It is also of the utmost importance to me that my clients feel best represented as who they are professionally, as well as personally, which is why each portrait session is bespoke and tailored to the individual. We spend time planning all aspects of the photoshoot to ensure that the resulting images truly reflect who they are, both in business and in real life.

Strong visuals and personal branding photos truly can make all the difference to how your brand is perceived by potential clients and the extent to which they come to trust you and consider you suitable as a supplier or partner in business. Can you afford not to invest in personal brand photography?

OVERCOMING CREATIVE BLOCK:

UNLEASH YOUR INNER INSPIRATION

Creative block is a common challenge that many individuals face when trying to come up with new ideas or creative solutions. It can feel like hitting a wall, with thoughts and inspiration drying up unexpectedly. This mental roadblock can be frustrating and overwhelming, leaving you feeling stuck and unable to move forward with your creative projects.

Embracing the creative process

One effective way to combat creative block is to embrace the creative process as a journey rather than a destination. By shifting your perspective and focusing on the process of creation rather than the end result, you can free yourself from the pressure of perfection and allow your creativity to flow more naturally.

Finding inspiration in everyday life

Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places. By paying attention to the world around you and staying open to new experiences, you can find inspiration in everyday moments. Whether it's a conversation with a friend, a walk in nature, or a piece of art, there are endless sources of inspiration waiting to

be discovered.

Experimenting and trying new things

A strong personal brand can set you apart from the competition, attract your ideal clients, and build trust and credibility in your industry. In today’s digital landscape, where first impressions are often made online, having a well-defined personal brand is essential.

Defining your personal brand

Know yourself: Start by understanding who you are and what you want to represent. What are your core values? What are your passions and strengths? What makes you unique? Reflecting on these questions will help you define the foundation of your personal brand.

Building your online presence

Create a professional website: Your website is the hub of your online presence. It should be visually appealing, easy to navigate, and reflective of your brand identity. Include a blog to share valuable content, an about page that tells your story, and a portfolio showcasing your work.

IN THE WORKPLACE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, diversity and inclusion (D&I) have become critical factors for success. For women leaders, fostering an inclusive culture not only drives innovation and growth but also reflects a commitment to equity and fairness. In this article, we’ll explore the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and provide actionable strategies for promoting an inclusive environment in your business.

Why diversity and inclusion matter

Enhanced creativity and innovation: Diverse teams bring different perspectives and ideas to the table, leading to more creative and innovative solutions. When people from varied backgrounds collaborate, they can approach problems from unique angles, fostering a culture of innovation.

Improved employee engagement: Inclusive workplaces make employees feel valued and respected, leading to higher job satisfaction and engagement. When employees see that their differences are appreciated, they are more likely to be motivated and committed to their work.

Better decision making: Diversity in the workplace leads to better decision-making processes. Diverse teams are more likely to consider a wider range of options and viewpoints, leading to more informed and effective decisions.

Attracting top talent: Companies known for their commitment to diversity and inclusion are more attractive to top talent. In today’s job market, many candidates prioritise employers who demonstrate a genuine commitment to D&I.

Positive reputation and brand image: Embracing diversity and inclusion enhances a company’s reputation and brand image. Customers and clients are increasingly conscious of D&I practices and prefer to support businesses that reflect their values.

Strategies for promoting diversity and inclusion

Develop a D&I policy: Start by creating a comprehensive diversity and inclusion policy that outlines your company’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment. This policy should include clear definitions, goals, and actionable steps.

Leadership commitment: For D&I initiatives to be successful, they must be supported by leadership. As a woman leader, lead by example and demonstrate your commitment to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of your business.

Inclusive hiring practices: Review your hiring practices to ensure they are inclusive. Use diverse recruitment channels, implement blind hiring techniques to reduce bias, and create diverse interview panels.

Provide D&I training: Offer regular training sessions on diversity, equity, and inclusion for all employees. These sessions should cover topics such as unconscious bias, cultural competency, and inclusive communication.

Create employee resource groups: Support the formation of employee resource groups (ERGs) where employees with similar backgrounds or interests can connect, share experiences, and advocate for inclusive practices within the company.

Foster an inclusive culture: Encourage open and respectful communication, and create a culture where all voices are heard and valued. Promote inclusivity in everyday interactions and decisionmaking processes.

Implement mentorship programs: Establish mentorship programs that pair employees from diverse backgrounds with experienced mentors. This can help underrepresented employees develop their skills and advance their careers.

Conduct regular assessments: Regularly assess your company’s D&I efforts to identify areas for improvement. Use surveys, feedback sessions, and diversity audits to gather data and make informed decisions.

Overcoming challenges in D&I implementation

Addressing resistance: Resistance to D&I initiatives can come from various quarters. Address this resistance through open dialogue, education, and demonstrating the tangible benefits of a diverse and inclusive workplace.

Managing unconscious bias: Unconscious bias can undermine D&I efforts. Implement training programs to raise awareness about biases and provide tools to mitigate their impact on hiring, promotions, and everyday interactions.

Ensuring accountability: Hold leaders and employees accountable for fostering an inclusive environment. Include D&I goals in performance reviews and reward those who actively contribute to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace.

Balancing diversity and inclusion: While diversity focuses on representation, inclusion ensures that all employees feel valued and integrated into the workplace. Balance your efforts to promote both diversity and inclusion simultaneously.

Success Stories: Women Leaders Driving D&I

Sophia’s Initiative: Sophia, the CEO of a tech startup, recognised the lack of diversity in her industry and took proactive steps to change it. She implemented inclusive hiring practices, created ERGs, and provided regular D&I training. Her efforts resulted in a more

diverse workforce, higher employee satisfaction, and increased innovation within her company.

Lena’s Leadership: Lena, a marketing executive, made diversity and inclusion a core part of her company’s culture. She launched a mentorship program for women and underrepresented groups, which not only helped develop talent but also fostered a sense of community and belonging. Lena’s leadership in D&I has been instrumental in her company’s growth and success.

Creating an inclusive environment

Celebrate differences: Celebrate the diverse backgrounds and cultures of your employees. Host cultural events, encourage sharing of traditions, and recognise the unique contributions of each team member.

Promote work-life balance:

Understand that employees have different needs and responsibilities. Offer flexible work arrangements and support work-life balance to accommodate diverse lifestyles and family structures.

Encourage feedback: Create channels for employees to provide feedback on D&I initiatives. Actively listen to their concerns and suggestions, and involve them in the decisionmaking process.

Annie Gibbins

JOYFUL WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT CULTIVATING A

Creating a positive company culture

These days, fostering a happy work culture is more critical than ever. A positive work environment not only enhances employee satisfaction but also boosts productivity and overall company success. So, how can organisations effectively cultivate a joyful workplace atmosphere?

Lead by example

One of the most impactful ways to build a happy work culture is through leadership by example. When leaders exhibit positivity, empathy, and respect towards

their team members, it sets the tone for the entire organisation. Employees are more likely to feel valued and motivated when they see their leaders embodying the values of the company.

Encouraging open communication

Transparent and open communication is key to creating a positive work culture. Employees should feel comfortable expressing their ideas, concerns, and feedback without fear of judgement or reprisal. By fostering an environment where communication flows freely,

organisations can build trust and strengthen relationships among team members.

Embracing work-life balance

Another crucial aspect of a happy work culture is promoting a healthy worklife balance. Encouraging employees to prioritise self-care, relaxation, and personal time outside of work hours can lead to increased job satisfaction and reduced burnout. Organisations that value their employees' wellbeing are more likely to retain top talent and foster a positive workplace environment.

Recognising and rewarding achievements

Acknowledging and celebrating employees' achievements is essential for boosting morale and motivation. Recognition can come in various forms, such as verbal praise, awards, bonuses, or promotions. By highlighting individual and team successes, organisations can reinforce positive behaviour and create a culture of appreciation and encouragement.

Nurturing a Sense of Belonging

Finally, building a happy work culture involves nurturing a sense of belonging and community among employees. Encouraging collaboration, teamwork, and social activities can help foster strong relationships and create a supportive work environment. When employees feel connected to their colleagues and the company as a whole, they are more likely to be

engaged and committed to their work.

Cultivating a joyful workplace environment requires a concerted effort from both leadership and employees, but ultimately, investing in a happy work environment is not just good for employees' wellbeing, but is also beneficial for the overall success and sustainability of the organisation.

HARNESSING THE POWER OF NETWORKING FOR BUSINESS GROWTH

In the world of entrepreneurship, networking is a vital strategy for business growth and success. For women entrepreneurs, building a strong network can open doors to new opportunities, partnerships and resources and is not only about exchanging business cards, but is also about building meaningful relationships that can support and elevate your business journey. Let’s explore the importance of networking and some actionable tips to help you harness its power effectively.

The importance of networking

Access to opportunities:

Networking provides access to opportunities that you might not find otherwise. These can include potential clients, partnerships, collaborations, and even investors. The more people you connect with, the more opportunities you can create for your business.

Knowledge and insights:

Engaging with a diverse network allows you to gain valuable insights and knowledge from different perspectives. Whether it’s industry trends, business strategies, or problem-solving techniques, learning from others can help you make informed decisions.

Support and mentorship:

Building a network of like-minded individuals can provide a support system and mentorship. Experienced entrepreneurs can offer guidance, share their experiences, and help you navigate challenges. Having a mentor can be invaluable for personal and professional growth.

Increased visibility: Networking helps increase your visibility and brand awareness. By participating in events, joining groups, and being active in your community, you can position yourself as a thought leader and attract attention to your business.

Strategies for effective networking

Identify your goals: Before diving into networking, identify what you want to achieve. Are you looking for new clients, seeking mentorship, or hoping to collaborate with others? Having clear goals will help you focus your efforts and make the most of your networking activities.

Be authentic: Authenticity is key to building genuine relationships. Be yourself and show a genuine interest in others. People are more likely to connect with you if they feel you are authentic and sincere.

Leverage online platforms: In today’s digital age, online networking is just as important as in-person networking. Utilise platforms like LinkedIn, industry forums, and social media to connect with others. Join groups, participate in discussions, and share valuable content to build your online presence.

Attend industry events: Attend conferences, seminars, workshops, and networking events relevant to your industry. These events provide opportunities to meet new people, learn from experts, and stay updated on industry trends. Don’t forget to follow up with the contacts you make.

Join professional associations: Joining professional associations and organisations can help you connect with peers in your industry. These groups often offer networking events, resources, and support that can benefit your business.

Building meaningful connections

Listen and engage: Effective networking is not just about talking; it’s also about listening. Show genuine interest in others by asking questions and actively listening to their responses. Engagement is key to building meaningful connections.

Offer value: Think about how you can provide value to others. Whether it’s sharing your expertise, offering help, or connecting someone with a useful contact, being helpful and supportive can strengthen your relationships.

Follow up: After meeting someone new, make sure to follow up. Send a personalised message or email to express your appreciation for the

conversation and suggest ways to stay in touch. Consistent follow-up helps keep the connection alive.

Stay connected: Maintain your relationships by staying in touch regularly. This could be through emails, social media interactions, or occasional meetings. Building a strong network requires ongoing effort and engagement.

Overcoming networking challenges

Networking for introverts: Networking can be daunting for introverts. If you’re an introvert, start by attending smaller events or joining online groups where you can interact at your own pace. Focus on quality over quantity and build deeper connections with a few people.

Dealing with rejection: Not every networking attempt will be successful, and that’s okay. Don’t take rejection personally. Keep a positive attitude and continue to put yourself out there. Each interaction is a learning experience.

Managing time: Networking can be time-consuming, so it’s important to manage your time effectively. Prioritise your networking activities based on your goals and allocate specific times for networking. This will help you stay focused and make the most of your efforts.

Tips for networking success

Be prepared: Before attending networking events, do some research. Know who will be there, what the event is about, and prepare some talking points or questions. Being prepared can help you feel more confident and make meaningful connections.

Use business cards wisely: While business cards are useful, don’t rely solely on them. Focus on making genuine connections rather than just handing out cards. When you exchange cards, take a moment to write a note on the back about your conversation to personalise your follow-up.

Practice your elevator pitch: Have a clear and concise elevator pitch ready. This should briefly explain who you are, what you do, and what you’re looking for. A well-crafted pitch can make a strong first impression and spark interest.

Be consistent: Networking is not a one-time activity. Be consistent in your efforts and make networking a regular part of your business strategy. Consistency helps build longterm relationships and keeps you top of mind.

Final thoughts

Harnessing the power of networking is essential for business growth and success. For women entrepreneurs, building a strong network can provide access to opportunities, support, and valuable insights. By being authentic, engaging genuinely, and offering value to others, you can create meaningful connections that benefit both your personal and professional life.

Remember, networking is about building relationships, not just making contacts. Approach networking with an open mind and a willingness to help others, and you will find that it can be one of the most rewarding aspects of your entrepreneurial journey.

MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS

In the entrepreneurial journey, maintaining mental health and wellness is as crucial as achieving business milestones. For women entrepreneurs, juggling multiple roles and responsibilities can often lead to stress and burnout. It’s vital to prioritise mental health to sustain long-term success and happiness. Let’s delve into the importance of mental health and wellness for female entrepreneurs and explore effective strategies to nurture both.

Understanding mental health challenges

Running a business comes with its set of unique challenges, and for women, these can be compounded by societal expectations and personal responsibilities. Some common mental health challenges faced by women entrepreneurs include the following.

Stress and burnout: The pressure to succeed, meet deadlines, and manage finances can lead to chronic stress and burnout. It’s essential

to recognise the signs early and take proactive steps to address them.

Work-life balance: Balancing work and personal life is a common struggle. The line between professional and personal time often blurs, leading to overwork and neglect of personal well-being.

Imposter syndrome: Many women entrepreneurs experience imposter syndrome, doubting their abilities and fearing they’ll be exposed as frauds. This can undermine confidence and hinder progress.

Isolation: Entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey. The lack of a support system and the constant hustle can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Prioritising mental health

Set realistic goals: While ambition is important, setting realistic and achievable goals can prevent overwhelm. Break down big tasks into smaller, manageable steps and celebrate your progress along the way.

Establish boundaries: Create clear boundaries between work and personal life. Set specific working hours and stick to them. Ensure you take regular breaks and disconnect from work during personal time.

Practice self-care: Self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Engage in activities that rejuvenate you, whether it’s reading, exercising, meditating, or spending time with loved ones. Prioritise self-care routines to recharge your mind and body.

Seek professional help: There’s no shame in seeking help from a mental health professional. Therapy or counselling can provide valuable tools and strategies to manage stress and improve mental well-being.

Mindfulness and stress management

Mindfulness practices: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness exercises can help reduce stress and increase focus.

Time management: Effective time management can alleviate stress. Use tools like calendars, to-do lists, and time-blocking to organise your tasks and prioritise important activities.

Physical activity: Regular physical activity is a powerful stress reliever. Whether it’s a daily walk, yoga, or a workout session, exercise can boost your mood and energy levels.

Healthy nutrition: A balanced diet plays a crucial role in mental health. Ensure you’re fuelling your body with nutritious foods that support overall well-being.

Building a support system

Network with peers: Connect with other women entrepreneurs who understand your journey. Join networking groups, attend industry events, and participate in online communities. Sharing experiences and advice can provide a sense of camaraderie and support.

Mentorship: Seek out mentors who can provide guidance and perspective. A mentor can help you navigate challenges, offer insights, and support your personal and professional growth.

Delegation: Don’t hesitate to delegate tasks. Building a reliable team and outsourcing tasks can reduce your workload and free up time for self-care and strategic thinking.

Family and friends: Lean on your family and friends for support. Communicate openly about your challenges and successes. Their encouragement and

understanding can be a source of strength.

Creating a positive work environment as a leader

Flexible work arrangements: Offer flexible work arrangements for yourself and your team. Flexibility can enhance productivity and reduce stress, fostering a healthier work environment.

Positive workplace culture: Cultivate a positive and inclusive workplace culture. Encourage open communication, recognise achievements, and provide opportunities for growth and development.

Mental health resources:

Provide access to mental health resources and support within your organisation. This could include workshops, counselling services, and wellness programs.

Final thoughts

Mental health and wellness are integral to the success of any entrepreneur, especially women who often juggle multiple roles. Remember, taking care of your mental health is not a sign of weakness but a powerful step towards being the best version of yourself. Embrace the journey, seek support when needed, and continue to thrive both personally and professionally.
