Editors Letter

Welcome

Message

Have you ever pinched yourself, in the middle of New York city, clutching more awards than you can barely carry, and ask “did this really just happen?” Well, this was me, just a few short days ago. It's with immense gratitude and excitement that I share the news that I just won the Grand Stevie Award, at the International Stevie Awards 2023 for Women in Business in New York My grandmother taught me that financial independence is the key to unlocking limitless possibilities for women. Through Women's Biz Global, I'm on a mission to empower one million women globally to achieve that freedom. I took a big gamble leaving my full-time CEO role. I was an established and recognised leader within the Australian business and charity sector, but I knew my passion was required elsewhere. I knew that my desire to connect women globally was where my drive was leading me. I knew that I had to give my new business, Women’s Biz Global my all. So, that is exactly what I did. Joined by one of my darling daughters, Chelsea, we jumped on a plane headed for the ‘Big Apple’. Not long after we touched down, I was glamming up for the prestigious

International Stevie Awards 2023. Wearing my head to floor royal blue dress, I felt a milliondollars, and that was before the event had even started. I was rubbing shoulders, smiling with, and introducing myself to some of the world’s most formidable women – and I was one of them! I created Women’s Biz Global, because I want all women globally to succeed at whatever they turn their hand to. I want women to thrive in success. I want girls to feel that they can achieve whatever they desire. I want women everywhere to feel as special as I did at the Stevie Awards. But wait, it gets better; much, much better. It is with immense gratitude and excitement that I want to announce that I won the Grand Stevie Award at the International Stevie Awards 2023 for Women in Business. Winning this Stevie Award recognises the collective strength of thousands of women breaking through both visible and invisible barriers. And then, this happened. I also won:

GOLD for 'Maverick of the Year' SILVER for Women Helping Women – Business and and Female Thought Leader of the Year - Consumer Services BRONZE for Best Female Entrepreneur – Business Services –10 or Less Employees, Most Innovative Woman of the Year - Advertising, Marketing & Public Relations and Social Change Maker of the Year – Gender. I am beyond thrilled and grateful for being recognised as a woman to watch, and I just know that the future for women is so bright. So, Women’s Biz Magazine December 2023 edition is my award to the women who are committed to business, female empowerment, and inspiring all women everywhere to reach for the stars, no matter what. And finally, before you turn the pages of this amazing magazine issue, I want to leave you with this: My grandmother's wisdom: “There's no glass ceiling.” WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 3

THE SPEECH I WANT THE WORLD TO HEAR 6 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

December 2023

THERE ARE TIMES IN LIFE WHEN YOU MUST TAKE A GAMBLE, TRUST THE RISK, BACK YOURSELF AND TAKE THE LEAP. THERE ARE WOMEN IN THIS WORLD WHO ARE DRIVEN BY A KIND OF SOULFUL ADRENALINE TO EXPERIENCE THE UNIQUE MOMENT, WHERE EVERY GOAL FALLS INTO PLACE. THAT’S NOT TO SAY ANY LEAP OF FAITH COMES EASY – BECAUSE RARELY DO DREAMS BECOME A REALITY WITHOUT GRIT, FEAR, GUTSY INTUITION, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, A CHEER SQUAD OF WOMEN APPLAUDING THEM FROM THE STANDS.

A

s the Founder and CEO of Women’s Biz Global, I have been acknowledged as one of these women. Remarkably, I am no stranger to juggling babies and milliondollar budgets. After marrying my childhood sweetheart at 20 years old, just three short years later, I gave birth to twin boys and 26 months later another set of twins! By 32-years-old, as we welcomed our fifth child, our family was complete. However, despite household numbers stacking up, I wanted more and I was certain I could achieve this. Holding ambition close to my heart, between nighttime feeds and wrestling daycare schedules, I decided to head back to university. Growing up, I, like many young women, had been conditioned to believe that being a mother and a wife was plentiful; that our purpose in life had been met – but not for me. As a tenacious, driven, and intelligent woman, I decided to challenge convention and believe that I could indeed, ‘have it all’. This passion became my purpose and I’ve been in business for over 30 years. It’s because of my career in leadership, that I decided that my next role would be to lead my very own company from

scratch, Women’s Biz Global. After leaving a prestigious role for a leading Australian charity, I decided to take my own helm and spearhead an international organisation, dedicated to girls and women across the globe.

Now, I am fiercely committed to business, female empowerment, and inspiring all women everywhere to reach for the stars, no matter what. As a true Renaissance woman, I’ve accomplished so much, in every facet of the business world. From being an acclaimed TV and podcast host, #1 best-selling author, keynote speaker, publisher, magazine creator, and business mentor, I have

become one of the most recognised voices for women in business. Despite my numerous accomplishments, my story is one of resilience and infectious empowerment. And I say this without a bursting ego – because deep down, I am humble and honoured to have been recognised for numerous awards at the 2023 Stevie Awards. Through Women's Biz Global, I have mentored thousands of women from around the world, helping them to achieve their goals and reach their full potential by calling out limiting beliefs, clarifying purpose, and developing strong business practices. Through my uplifting and captivating journey, I now spend countless hours inspiring women everywhere, to break down barriers and achieve their wildest dreams. As CEO of Women's Biz Global, I am on a mission to unleash the full potential of women in business. WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 7

Women's Biz Magazine In this edition of Women’s Business Magazine, I want to share with you a snippet of my acceptance speech from the Stevie Awards. Feeling a million dollars and staring into the sea of women’s faces smiling back at me, I felt that so much hard work (and fear facing) was paying off. I felt proud, special, and accomplished; after all, isn’t that how we’d all hope to feel throughout our careers? I was so excited writing this speech (which I was never guaranteed to use), so I hope you find reading it equally exciting and inspiring. So, it goes a little something like this (with a few added extras that I just feel the need to share with you hot off the digital printing press). “Alarmingly, women are born to access 100% of available opportunities, 50% of the time. But far too often they are limited by visible and invisible barriers, some self-imposed and some inflicted by societal convention. This award is dedicated to every woman who has dared to dream, to lead, and to change the world. It's for those who have faced adversity with unwavering strength and determination. It's for the women who inspire us with their resilience and tenacity. Essentially, women need women. Women need to feel heard, seen, and supported. Women do not need to be shamed for being too ambitious, too results driven, too confident, too outspoken, too opinionated, or too emotional. Women are complex and that’s what is brilliant about women. As multi-dimensional humans, we do it all. We care, we educate, we nurture, we give, we lead, we comfort, we teach, we heal, we build, we speak, we listen, we inspire, and 8 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

we learn. There is nothing ‘too’ much about us.

regardless of her background or circumstance, feels protected and valued in her pursuits.

This award is a tribute to women’s courage and an acknowledgment of their invaluable contributions. Together, we celebrate the indomitable spirit and boundless potential within every woman. It is imperative to recognise that for women to truly thrive, they must have the freedom to pursue their dreams.

Only then can she fearlessly step into her potential, unburdened by limitations. Opportunities are the gateway to abundance. By opening doors and breaking down barriers, we create a world where women can pursue their passions and ambitions without reservation. This abundance isn't limited to material wealth; it encompasses a rich, fulfilling life defined by purpose and joy.

Without freedom, their potential is severely limited. They deserve more than mere existence; they deserve safety, security, and the boundless opportunities to unapologetically live lives that attract abundance.

This speech is not just a speech, but a pledge; a promise to do more for women globally. This speech is a mission statement and a declaration that I want every woman to hold me accountable to. This speech is a thank you to all those who have supported me, and coaxed my potential out of me, in my moments of fear or uncertainty. This speech is for my children – your children, to see women in business is not just one part of life – but a necessary anchor for women to hold onto. It’s not even just about business, it’s a timely reminder that equality must always remain on our social agenda. That any gender gap, be it financial, health, education, or mental health, needs to be lessened.

Our mission at Women’s Biz Global is rooted in this belief. We strive to empower one million women worldwide, providing them with the tools, resources, and support to achieve financial independence. This empowerment grants women the freedom they need to shape their own destinies. Safety and security are not privileges; they are essential rights. It is our duty to ensure that every woman,

Together, we are working towards a future where every woman can boldly claim her space and be free to live a life of her choosing. This award serves as a symbol of our collective dedication to this cause, and it is a testament to the unwavering power of women. Thank you, and let us continue to champion the freedom, safety, and opportunities that every woman deserves. Together, we will build a world where abundance knows no bounds.

December 2023 And my gratitude for women spills over here. Standing page by page with the wonderful writers, journalists, trail blazers and entrepreneurs in this magazine issue, signifies the brilliance among us. In this modern-day world, where image and persona is everything, I want to remove society’s expectation of what a woman ‘should’ be doing, and encourage women to do anything they set their minds to. It’s not easy stepping into the unknown, when our very imposters tackle our confidence at most turns. However, we need to mute the voices who don’t want the best for us and amplify the voices that do. Please allow me to be a voice that you can crank up on your self-worth headphones as I say, “Do it. Do anything you want. Build anything you’ve always wanted to build. Launch the podcast, write the book, create a family, lead a business, speak from a stand, tick off your dream list, and embrace the women around you.” We can’t do it alone. We’re not meant to do this life alone. So, if you are ready to start achieving phenomenal success on a global stage, we invite you immerse yourself in Women’s Biz Global. When I was asked who has been my inspiration, my instant reply was my grandmother and in her words, “Annie, there is no such thing as a glass ceiling, for any woman, anywhere.”

HOW I NAVIGATED THE COMPETITIVE

SKINCARE INDUSTRY WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE By Amelia Goff STARTING A SKINCARE BRAND WASN'T EASY, ESPECIALLY WHEN THIS INDUSTRY IS A SATURATED ONE, WITH A LOT OF COMPETITION. BUT AS SOMEONE WHO HAS STRUGGLED TO GET MY OWN SKIN UNDER CONTROL, WHILE BECOMING AWARE OF JUST HOW DETRIMENTAL SYNTHETIC AND TOXIC INGREDIENTS CAN BE TO THE SKIN AND OUR OVERALL HEALTH, I SAW THE NEED FOR A SKINCARE BRAND THAT WAS 100% NATURAL AND TOXIC FREE, YET WAS ALSO EFFECTIVE AND AFFORDABLE MAKING IT EASY FOR THOSE WANTING TO IMPROVE THEIR SKIN’S HEALTH, SEE REAL RESULTS AND BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN THESE SKIN RESULTS, LONG TERM. 12 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

M

y name is Amelia and I am the founder of Fresh Face Skin and these are the key points of my approach to growing my business with passion and purpose.

Overcome anything: Using passion as a driving force My passion is a driving force that has fuelled my journey into the skincare industry and the development and success of Fresh Face Skin. My love of skincare and my understanding of natural ingredients and their effects on the skin, is what led me to create Fresh Face Skin in the first place. It's also what has driven me to innovate my skincare brand to stand out in this crowded industry. I'd say that when you're starting out in a market as saturated as skincare, you need passion and perseverance to keep you going, and the confidence and selfbelief that your brand can and will stand out from the rest.

Build a brand with purpose: Filling a gap in the market I started my brand because of my own skincare experiences. Skin care is overwhelming and it can be hard to understand which products are right for your skin and its individual needs. When you have a skin concern that is affecting your mental health, often we run for the quick fixes out of desperation. Personally, I have tried over-the-counter products that contain harsh ingredients, with the aim to clear my surface concern quickly, but unfortunately, this has only led to long term skin sensitivity and reactiveness as often, these quick-fix products lead to a weakened skin barrier. These past experiences made me realise the importance of offering a skincare range that has a focus on honesty in its claims, simplicity in its approach and a focus on long term overall health - in the quality of ingredients it uses for the skin and its functions.

December 2023

When I looked for existing products on the market that embodied these principles, I simply couldn't find one that met all of my needs and because of this, I realised that there was a gap in the skin care industry that I wanted to fill, and that is how Fresh Face Skin came about! Fresh Face Skin is more than a skincare range. It’s a community that empowers you to understand your skin, what it’s saying and what it needs. It’s also a community that guides you as to how to take care of it, long term. We are committed to using 100% natural ingredients derived from plants and fruit, ingredients that are gentle on the skin and provide long term results. My goal initially and ongoing, is for our skincare range to focus on maintaining the skin's lipid barrier; that is, bringing balance back to the skin and its functions, while educating our customers on the importance of addressing the root causes of skin problems, for long term skin results. Our purpose is to empower our customers to wear the skin they’re in, with confidence. We want you to feel proud of the skin staring back at you and to be comfortable and confident going makeup free. We do that via the skin education that we express and by offering a results-driven, natural skincare range, that has been carefully created and easily fits into different lifestyles, ensuring that this purpose is achieved!

Brand culture: Build a team that embodies your brand Starting a business from scratch was definitely a steep learning curve. I'd be lying if I said it

hasn’t been challenging but I wanted to turn my passion into a skincare brand that others with the same desires as me, could enjoy. I wanted this to apply to not only our customers, but also, those that work for Fresh Face Skin. One of my biggest challenges has been finding a team that aligns with Fresh Face Skin’s business purpose, values and vision. It's never easy to let someone go, but it's a decision that's necessary to maintain the culture and success of your business. It's important to have a team that supports the business’ end goal and how to get there! When you start a business out of pure passion and purpose and as a solo individual, growing a team can come as an initial shock, as leading a team is a job in itself and requires complete dedication. However, if you prioritise your self-growth and the power of self-reflection along the way, you will quickly learn from the challenges you have faced, as well as how to grow and adapt for the future. Your team is what will help build your business, so get it right, then treat them right!

Outsource: The role of experts in making the dream a reality As I said, I had no experience making products prior to creating my skincare brand, so finding the right experts within the field who shared my goals and vision for Fresh Face Skin and then trusting these experts was, and still is, crucial to the success of my business. For example, I work with a product chemist/formulator who specialises in natural

product formulation, who has also helped bring Fresh Face Skin and the vision that I had for this brand, to life. They help ensure that every ingredient that I want within our product range, is stable and effective, safe for human use and able to withstand temperature changes, without bacterial growth.

My manufacturer also plays a vital role in creating our products in bulk and filling them into our packaging. In addition, my brand designer has helped create a strong visual identity for Fresh Face Skin to stand out in the marketplace. Keep on your toes: Constant work, research, and development As well as the trials and tribulations of creating the brand, I also have to face the constant trial of staying relevant in this saturated skincare industry. To do this, it is essential to continuously research and develop. Personally, being a skincare lover myself, I regularly research competitors, trends and newly released ingredients and their claims to ensure Fresh Face Skin remains relevant and needed within this industry.

WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 13

Women's Biz Magazine

Initially, we started with just three key products within our range, that were designed to work as both a serum and moisturiser in one. This innovative approach to skincare, attracted customers to our new brand and allowed us to build a customer base that wanted a simplified approach to skincare, while experiencing real skin results. As we expanded our range, we have listened to the needs of our customers, to continue to deliver a skincare range that meets all needs, lifestyles and budgets and that continues to deliver long term skin results.

Looking ahead: The future of fresh face skin The future of Fresh Face Skin is full of opportunities and we have much planned for our continued growth within this industry!. We aim 14 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

to become the most trusted natural skincare brand in the marketplace and expand our reach to more countries. Our product range will continue to grow and evolve to meet the specific needs of our customers and we will continue to dedicate ourselves to making real changes to the skin of our users, with the aim for you to wear the skin you’re in, with confidence! We have also recently refreshed our branding and packaging, making it more environmentally friendly and user-friendly and this new packaging will be launched in the next few weeks. In addition, we are focusing on improving our skin education initiatives to ensure that our customers are equipped with the knowledge they need for their skin journey, allowing you to make the right choices when it comes to your skin's long term

health. My path in the skincare industry has been quite a journey so far, driven by my passion, dedication and a simple goal: to provide high quality, effective, natural and affordable skincare that is accessible and sustainable to all wanting to improve their skin! Fresh Face Skin was born out of my desire to help people feel good in the skin they’re in and to empower people to make educated choices when it comes to not only their skin, but also their overall health and well-being long term. I'm excited about what the future holds for Fresh Face Skin and will continue to view challenges as opportunities for further growth and development. I look forward to all that the future holds for this much loved brand.

UNLEASHING LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL:

WOMEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF CHANGE

By Annie Gibbins

L

et's talk about breaking barriers and rewriting the rules of leadership. In today's fast-paced business world, women aren't just claiming their seats at the table—they're driving innovation, shaking things up, and proving that effective leadership knows no gender bounds. This article is your roadmap, your secret weapon, your go-to guide for unleashing your full-blown leadership potential. We're talking about cultivating unshakable confidence, tackling challenges head-on, and leaving a legacy that's uniquely yours.

Fuelling the Fire: Cultivating Confidence and Assertiveness Picture this: unbreakable confidence radiating from every move you make. It's not about arrogance, it's about knowing your worth and owning it. Dive into the journey of recognising your strengths, learning from your setbacks, and projecting an assertive presence that commands respect. When you believe in yourself, you're not just leading a team—you're leading a movement. Consider the story of Michelle Chen, a rising star in the finance industry. Michelle's journey wasn't paved with silver spoons;

she worked her way up, facing doubts and challenges along the way. Yet, her unyielding belief in her capabilities propelled her to lead a team of financial analysts, where her confidence inspires others to push boundaries and achieve new heights. Michelle's story is a testament to the transformative power of self-belief and assertiveness.

Authenticity is Your Superpower: Embracing Your Unique Leadership Style Here's the thing: there's no one-size-fits-all in leadership. It's about embracing who you are, quirks and all. Whether you lead with heart, with decisiveness, or a mix of both, authenticity is your secret sauce. It's what builds trust, what inspires loyalty, and what sets you apart as a leader who's not afraid to be real. Meet Aisha Khan, a seasoned entrepreneur known for her authentic leadership style. Aisha's team doesn't just follow her because she's the boss; they follow her because they genuinely believe in her vision and approach. Her candidness creates an environment where team members feel valued and empowered, ultimately

driving productivity and innovation. Aisha 's leadership demonstrates that being true to yourself isn't just a strength—it's a strategic advantage.

Speak Up, Stand Out: Mastering the Art of Communication Imagine your words cutting through the noise, landing with impact and precision. That's the power of effective communication. It's about not just talking, but truly connecting. It's about understanding your team, giving feedback that matters, and listening with intent. When your communication game is strong, your leadership game is unstoppable. Think of Sarah Martinez, a seasoned project manager with a reputation for exceptional communication skills. Sarah doesn't just relay information; she ensures that every message is clear, concise, and tailored to the recipient. This level of communication mastery not only ensures that projects run smoothly but also fosters a culture of open dialogue and collaboration within her team. Sarah's example highlights how effective communication is the cornerstone of impactful leadership.

Strength in Diversity: Building a Team that Thrives In leadership, it's not just about the individual—it's about the collective strength of the team. Championing diversity isn't a checkbox—it's a game-changer. By fostering an inclusive environment, you're not just inviting different perspectives; you're inviting innovation, creativity, and a dynamic that propels your organisation forward. Consider the case of Amara Nwachukwu, a forward-thinking CEO who understands the power of diverse perspectives. Amara actively seeks out team members from various backgrounds and experiences, knowing that this diversity is the catalyst for groundbreaking ideas and solutions. Through Amara’s leadership, the organisation has not only thrived but also set new industry standards for inclusivity and innovation.

Decision-Making Mastery: Navigating the Tough Calls Leadership throws curveballs, but you? You're ready to knock 'em out of the park. It's about strategic thinking, data-backed decisions, and a healthy dose of intuition. You're not just making choices; you're making gamechanging moves that shape the future. Meet Rachel Williams, a seasoned executive known for her exceptional decisionmaking skills. Rachel doesn't shy away from tough calls; she embraces them as opportunities to steer her organisation towards success. Her ability to blend analytical insights with gut instincts has led to a track record of strategic wins. Rachel's story

16 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

underscores the importance of confident and calculated decision-making in leadership.

Passing the Torch: Mentorship and Empowerment Leadership isn't a solo act. It's about lifting others up, sharing wisdom, and being a beacon of support. Seek out mentors who've walked the path and, when the time comes, pay it forward. It's a cycle of empowerment that doesn't just strengthen individuals; it fortifies a culture of growth. Consider the journey of Maria Rodriguez, a seasoned executive who understands the impact of mentorship. Maria credits much of her success to the guidance she received from a mentor early in her career. Now, she's made it her mission to provide that same support to emerging leaders within her organisation. Maria's commitment to mentorship has not only empowered individuals but has also created a culture of learning and development.

Overcoming Obstacles: The Grit to Persevere Let's face it: the road to leadership isn't always a smooth one. There might be hurdles, biases, or naysayers. But guess what? You've got the grit, the determination, and the unwavering spirit to face them head-on. Connect with fellow trailblazers, adopt a growth mindset, and seek opportunities for growth. You're not just overcoming obstacles; you're turning them into stepping stones. Consider the story of Lina Ahmed, a tenacious entrepreneur who faced numerous challenges while building her start-up from the ground up. From funding hurdles to scepticism about her

vision, Lina encountered it all. But her unwavering belief in her mission, coupled with her ability to adapt and persevere, led to the eventual success of her company. Lina's journey exemplifies the power of grit and determination in the face of adversity.

Eternal Learner: The Thriving Leader's Mantra Leadership is a journey, not a destination. Stay hungry for knowledge, stay in the loop, and stay ahead of the curve. When you're committed to continuous learning, you're not just keeping pace; you're leading the charge in a world of change. Look no further than the story of Jenny Harrison, a seasoned executive who understands the value of lifelong learning. James doesn't rest on past accomplishments; she's always seeking out the latest trends, technologies, and strategies to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving business landscape. This dedication to ongoing education has not only kept her at the forefront of his field but has also positioned her as a visionary leader in his organisation.

Leaving Your Imprint on Leadership Women in leadership aren't just making waves; they're creating a tidal shift. This isn't about breaking glass ceilings; it's about soaring to new heights, leaving a legacy that's uniquely yours. Through empowerment, unwavering support, and the sheer determination to thrive, you're not just a leader; you're a force of nature. So go on, rewrite the rules, shatter the norms, and let the world see what true leadership looks like. It looks like you. Embrace it, own it, and lead the way.

EVERY BUSINESS HAS A SILVER LINING!:

LAUNCHING A BRAND IN THE TIME OF A PANDEMIC By Ang Domagala

For over a decade as a skin aesthetician, skincare and people care have been my passion, and I’ve been fortunate enough to combine these two elements with owning the award-winning Lekeyah Skin Rejuvenation Centre in Traralgon (regional Victoria), and the development and production of Omorfi Active Skincare.

H

owever, I’ve always ensured that my focus in both businesses hasn’t been about driving sales, but instead, has been about changing lives and through this holistic approach to skincare, we’ve become industry leaders. For me, caring about people and putting clients first, has been our driving force. In a business ownership role in the beauty and personal care industries, I’ve come to recognise our customer needs are as diverse as our customers themselves, ranging from ageing skin to pigmentation, rosacea and scarring, teenage skin, and from minor cosmetic to more involved periprocedural treatments. And it’s not all aesthetic – some clients’ needs are centred around personal comfort or quality of life. I’ve also recognised that you need to cultivate a team that is just as passionate as you are - they are imperative to the continued sustainability and evolution of your businesses. This, in particular, was SO important when the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic hit, especially in Victoria, but there was a silver lining behind it when it came to the R&D of Omorfi Active Skincare. In 2020, when we found ourselves facing lockdown after lockdown in Victoria – which we all know was particularly impactful on the

hair and beauty industries - this silver lining during COVID was the drive to not only stay in business, but also keep my team employed. After all, they are the business! Faced with days and weeks of wondering if we would ever deliver a facial, haircut or mani/ pedi again any time soon, I revisited my frustration with the lack of medical-grade skin products available from previous suppliers – particularly without toxic and ineffective filler ingredients – and decided now was the time for Omorfi to be born! I rallied my team, and, motivated by one another and a commitment to bring this dream of creating my own skincare range to life, we went into action! Together we conducted research, applied for a local council grant

(which we received), debated names (Omorfi means beautiful in Greek - perfect!), and along with a team of pharmacists, tested the ingredients and devised formulations. My team and I carried out further testing, marketing was undertaken (mainly online) and together, we birthed Omorfi! Simply put, Omorfi has been the culmination of a dream for me – knowing what works in skincare and what is just a waste of time. Having worked with every skin type available, Omorfi has been a natural progression into channeling our collective passion and producing a skincare range that actually does what it says! Throughout this journey of running Lekeyah simultaneously with Omorfi, there have been many learning curves which you could name ‘Setting Goals and Challenges!’

Women's Biz Magazine I believe you can never stop learning – it’s so important to continually upskill and educate yourself – and one of the best decisions for me was to connect with Business Coach, Faye Murray. Working with Faye has assisted in fine-tuning all the business expertise knowledge that was needed, so I could deliver on Omorfi ‘promises’ and ensure we continue to have a profitable product line. Having goals ensures you are accountable – in business and to your team. We had three key goals to achieve in the last 12 months and I am happy to say, we have blown them out of the water! They included the following. 1. Exceptional results with Omorfi changing the integrity of clients’ skin. This has also led to improving self-esteem and confidence; what is on the

outside is reflected on the inside, and vice versa! 2. We have introduced a total of six new products to the range (Five retail and one professionaluse only). 3. We have successfully detached Omorfi from Lekeyah (as Lekeyah was our launchpad) and now have a dedicated website, social media team and publicist on board, to help share the Omorfi story. Recognising our challenges and overcoming them with successful and positive outcomes has also been integral to our growth. These have included: 1. Trust and belief in the quality of the products from our team. We had to believe they were better than any of the ‘big name’ brands. Road testing for each individuals’ skin type meant

they soon fell in love with the products – so we knew we had an authentic range. 2. Ingredient sourcing during the pandemic was problematic, however we managed to source different ingredients locally and continue production without halting our progress. 3. I needed to understand how to invest into marketing/social media, PR and advertising, yet ensure cash flow was results were being generated. I have found companies who understand our budgets, our brand and our message, and slowly we are making a name for Omorfi. I am so incredibly proud of the brand, and now, the reputation we have established for Omorfi. I’m also proud I’ve created a successful business for myself, my team and our community to enjoy and be a part of.

About Ang Domagala Omorfi means ‘beautiful’ in Greek, and is the culmination of a dream, created by Ang Domagala, clinical aesthetician and owner of esteemed, award-winning skin rejuvenation clinic, Lekeyah, in regional Victoria. Ang has harnessed years of experience, alongside a little bit of science and a whole lot of passion, to bring Omorfi to life. Influenced by more than a decade of treating clients genuinely suffering with severe skin conditions (and a global pandemic), Ang developed Omorfi Active Skin Care as an honest skin care range, with no lies or false promises surrounding it.

EMPOWERING WOMEN IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP By Annie Gibbins

From Idea to Impact: Empowering Women in Entrepreneurship

unwavering belief in her vision and her willingness to tackle obstacles head-on exemplify the entrepreneurial mindset.

I suggest you buckle up because we're diving into the world of entrepreneurship, and I promise you, it's going to be a ride worth every step. We're not just talking theories here, we're getting down to the nitty-gritty of turning your idea into a thriving business. Get ready to unleash your inner entrepreneur.

Market Research and Identifying a Niche: Your Roadmap to Success

Nurturing an Entrepreneurial Mindset: The Core of Success To kick things off, let's talk about mindset. It's the backbone of every successful entrepreneur. We're not just talking about thinking outside the box; we're talking about throwing the box out altogether. It's about being open to possibilities, taking calculated risks, and believing in your vision even when others might not. Meet Lisa, a serial entrepreneur who's never been afraid to think big. When she came up with the idea for her sustainable fashion startup, she knew she was onto something revolutionary. She embraced the challenges that came her way, whether it was sourcing eco-friendly materials or building a network of like-minded suppliers. Her

Understanding your market is like having a secret weapon. It's not just about what you want to sell; it's about what the market needs. Start by asking questions: Who are your potential customers? What problems are they facing? How can you solve them better than anyone else? This is where you lay the foundation for a business that not only survives but thrives. Take Maria, for instance, a tech enthusiast who noticed a gap in the market for user-friendly productivity software. She didn't just dive in headfirst; she meticulously researched the competition, identified the pain points of potential users, and designed a solution that addressed their needs. Her market research formed the backbone of her successful startup, and she continues to adapt her products to meet evolving market demands.

Creating a Robust Business Plan: Your Blueprint for Success Think of a business plan as

your roadmap, guiding you through the twists and turns of entrepreneurship. It's not just a document; it's your business's North Star. It outlines your goals, target market, financial projections, and marketing strategies. This isn't just about attracting investors; it's about giving you a clear path to success. Meet Jessica, a strategic planner who's never launched a business without a meticulous plan in place. Her business plans are not just comprehensive; they're living documents that evolve with her business. When she started her organic skincare line, her initial business plan set out her vision and strategies. But as the market changed and customer preferences evolved, Jessica updated her plan to stay ahead of the curve.

Building a Strong Support Network: Your Safety Net in the Entrepreneurial Journey Entrepreneurship can be a rollercoaster, and you'll need a support network to ride it out. Surround yourself with mentors, fellow entrepreneurs, and advisors. These are the people who'll provide guidance, offer fresh perspectives, and be there to celebrate your wins and help you through your challenges.

WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 19

Women's Biz Magazine Think of Sarah, a first-time entrepreneur who realised the importance of a support network when she faced challenges in scaling her e-commerce business. She reached out to a mentor, a seasoned entrepreneur who had faced similar issues in the past. With their guidance, she not only overcame the obstacles but also formed valuable connections in the industry. The support network she built became a cornerstone of her entrepreneurial journey.

Securing Funding and Resources: Turning Dreams into Reality Now, let's talk about the money. Funding your startup isn't just about seeking investors; it's about finding the right kind of capital for your business. Whether it's bootstrapping, seeking angel investors, exploring venture capital, or harnessing the power of crowdfunding, each avenue comes with its own set of opportunities and challenges. Consider Pooja, who founded a technology startup and knew she needed significant capital to bring her innovative product to market. She explored various funding options, including pitching her idea to angel investors and venture capitalists. Pooja’s ability to adapt her pitch to different audiences and her tenacity in securing funding allowed her to transform her dream into a thriving business.

Developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP): Your First Step into the Market Launching your product doesn't mean it has to be perfect from 20 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

the get-go. In fact, it's better if it's not. Enter the MVP—a stripped-down version of your product that allows you to test the waters, gather feedback, and refine your offering based on real-world insights. It's not about getting it right immediately; it's about getting it going. Meet Amina, a software developer who understands the importance of user feedback in product development. When she launched her project management software, she started with a basic version to get it into the hands of early users. Their feedback helped her identify key features and improvements, shaping the final product into a market leader. Her willingness to iterate and improve based on real-world usage made all the difference.

Marketing and Branding Strategies: Getting Your Message Out There You've got a product, now it's time to let the world know. Marketing isn't just about advertising; it's about crafting a story that resonates with your audience. From digital marketing to social media strategies, it's about creating a brand identity that stands out in a crowded market. Adriana, a marketing maven, knows that storytelling is at the heart of effective branding. When she launched her ecofriendly home goods store, she didn't just promote products; she shared the journey of sourcing sustainable materials and the positive impact of every purchase on the environment. Her ability to create a narrative that connected with her customers turned her startup into a recognised brand in

the eco-conscious consumer market.

Adapting to Change and Embracing Innovation: Staying Ahead of the Curve The business landscape is constantly evolving. As an entrepreneur, you need to be nimble, ready to adapt to new technologies, trends, and opportunities. It's not just about keeping up; it's about leading the way in innovation. Meet Rachel, a tech-savvy entrepreneur who doesn't just follow trends; she sets them. Her e-learning platform embraced emerging technologies and provided innovative solutions to the evolving needs of learners. Rachel's ability to pivot her business in response to changing market dynamics and her commitment to staying ahead of the curve positioned her as a leader in her industry.

Sustainability and LongTerm Growth: Leaving a Lasting Legacy Now, let's talk about the big picture. Sustainability isn't just a buzzword; it's a commitment to creating a business that not only thrives financially but also leaves a positive impact on the world. It's about making decisions that benefit not only your bottom line but also your community and the environment. Consider Jaya, an entrepreneur who's passionate about environmental sustainability. When she founded her online marketplace for eco-friendly products, she made it a mission to support local artisans and reduce carbon footprints.

December 2023

Her business practices not only resonated with environmentally conscious consumers but also set a standard for ethical and sustainable entrepreneurship. Empowering women in entrepreneurship isn't just about starting businesses; it's about starting a movement. As women continue to redefine the entrepreneurial landscape, they're not just driving economic progress; they're shaping a more inclusive, innovative, and dynamic business world. Their resilience, creativity, and unwavering determination are breaking down barriers and inspiring generations to come. By nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset, conducting thorough market research, and crafting

robust business plans, women are turning their ideas into impactful ventures. With strong support networks, access to funding, and the development of Minimum Viable Products, they're not only entering the market but making a splash. Through effective marketing, adaptability, and a commitment to sustainability, women entrepreneurs are leaving a legacy that extends beyond profit margins. In this journey from idea to impact, each woman brings her unique story, perspective, and expertise to the table. Their successes are not just individual victories, but triumphs for the collective progress of women in the world

of entrepreneurship. As we celebrate their achievements, let us also recognise that the path forward requires continued support, mentorship, and opportunities for aspiring female entrepreneurs. Together, we're not just witnessing the rise of women in entrepreneurship; we're actively contributing to a future where the entrepreneurial landscape knows no bounds, and every woman with a vision has the tools and resources to turn it into reality. It's not just about levelling the playing field; it's about reshaping it entirely. So, let's keep the momentum going, because the next ground-breaking start up might just be one idea away. Embrace it, own it, and lead the way. WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 21

HOW I CRAFTED MY WAY TO A

SUCCESSFUL SIDE-HUSTLE! By Debbie Hatumale-Uy

W

hen we think ‘craft’ we immediately think knitting, quilting, scrapbooking or something we do with our kids to entertain them during school holidays or for a school project, right?

Craft was mentioned as being in the top five of side-hustles alongside drop-shopping, service-based businesses and delivery driving, earning an average of $20,000 annually of additional income, according to ABS’ 2023 census data.

I am Debbie Hatumale-Uy, the Founder of Only The Sweet Stuff (OTSS), and considered by many the Queen of Crafts, not that you’d ever hear me calling myself that!

How amazing is that? I believe that today, crafters are the youngest they’ve ever been and the crafting community is breaking stereotypes left right and centre.

The crafting industry is changing for the better and right now, there are major opportunities within it. There was a really trending story that floated around a little while ago about a person who went to a coffee shop and was surprised to see a bunch of gen Z’ers knitting together at a table, while having their morning coffee. They were surprised because their impression of the crafting community was that young people didn’t participate in crafts like that. No longer is craft only traditional activities, like knitting, it’s so much more than that. It’s also now made up of all ages. These days, we are seeing personalised crafts on the 22 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

rise, so say the 20,000 strong community in the OTSS fam! Lockdown was the trigger for many people globally to stop and think about what they wanted from their career and maybe find something they were passionate about. Myself included. I now specialise in personalised crafts and sourcing quality craft items for other crafters across Australia! With the introduction of precision-cutting machines such as cricut, silhouette and others, we’re now seeing a new wave of consumers adopt personalisation crafts as a hobby, or using it to start a side hustle from home.

The demographics of the personalisation crafting community include young mums, brides and grooms-tobe, Gen Z’s and interestingly millennials, are by far the most active. There are a number of reasons for this. It could be because crafting doesn’t cost too much to get started, but it could also be the fact that crafting is a creative outlet, one you might not have in your day-to-day life. I was a mum and pregnant when I started and just needed a distraction from the nausea. I watched hours of how-to videos and as my skills increased, so did the demand for selling what I was making.

December 2023 I then founded Only The Sweet Stuff and in my first year made well over 30K revenue and in the second year, I quadrupled what I made in the first. I was receiving requests every day from customers on where I sourced my items - the products you personalise with your machine, as well as requests for ongoing how-to content. It was then I realised the crafting community needed a new resource.

finished product.

Only The Sweet Stuff’s offering changed to sourcing highquality crafting items with complementary how-to content, in addition to offering an invitation to join a huge online crafting community. We have a place for everyone, from beginners who have never turned on their machine, to crafters who now run their own businesses.

With a minimal investment to get started, could personalisation crafting take over as the most popular sidehustle for Australians? Could the rise of personalisation craft and the ages getting involved give craft a new life?Definitely.

I started learning with nothing but videos, blogs and time. Now I am proud to say, anyone who is wanting to do something creative in their spare time, maybe make some extra

A lot of people make the mistake of only showing the finished product and telling everyone to ‘buy now’ or ‘order now’ - this is real old school marketing. No longer do people want to be forced into a sale, they want a connection to something or someone, and will buy from whoever they have this connection with.

income and is considering personalisation crafting, has everything they could need under the Only The Sweet Stuff banner. My advice for anyone who wants to start is to let it happen organically. Start posting what you’re making on your socials and showing what goes on behind the scenes. This is important - show your process, and what you need to go through, to end up with a

Only the Sweet Stuff is the supplier of choice for quality craft items for Australia’s top crafting influencers and I am on a mission to continue growing my community of crafters across the globe. For more information about me or Only The Sweet Stuff, visit www.onlythesweetstuff.com.au.

Q&A WITH

EMILY CIARDIELLO

CO-FOUNDER, CO-OWNER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF FOIL ME

F

orming a strong base in relationship building through various roles in sales and the service industry, along with a four year career as a secondary school teacher, a chance visit and discussion with her hairdresser best friend about hair foils, catapulted Emily Ciaridello (and husband, Iliano) into the hairdressing industry with the evolution of Foil Me. For the past decade, Emily has juggled being a mum to two boys, alongside her roles as CEO and Creative Director of Foil Me, and its offshoot, home. by Foil Me.

Inspiration in business comes in different forms One of the things that inspires me most in our business is how wonderful it is to watch our team grow and change, whilst thriving in their roles. As a business owner, I am privileged to witness the evolution of progression as the business expands and as our creativity soars. It’s truly inspirational. As our business services are one of the most creative industries, it’s been an absolute delight to see our Foil Me ‘Movers’ loving their colour work with our foils, yet also loving what we do and what we provide for them. Changing businesses/careers and the challenges within this… and the positive outcomes!

As the R&D with Foil Me began, we were only selling to Adelaide salons, so it wasn’t hugely overwhelming in the beginning. I was visiting salons personally, getting to know the individual hairdresser, their techniques and what they loved about the foils. I would then use this information with other salons, telling them about the benefits of the foil, so it was more of a flow-on effect. The one challenge to overcome moving into a different industry was knowledge based. I was a great listener to the salons that provided feedback, and I also joined Facebook groups, forums, and Periscope (Twitter’s

old version of live videos like the ones on Instagram), seeking feedback. Another challenge was ordering – knowing how much to order and how much investment we could make, without taking food out of our children’s mouths. We ran out of stock a lot in the early days and sometimes we still do, but we are much better at predicting and estimating how much we need. We have also been pioneers in educating hairdressers how to create with pre-cut embossed foils. Before we introduced Foil Me, pre-cut foils did exist, but they were smooth, thick, narrow and short in size. We have created so many of the sizes that many of the pre-cut foils are now – The Wide, The Long-Wide and The Extra Wide. We’ve been entrepreneurial in developing beautiful and on-trend colours, and later on along the journey, hand drawn designs, to custom design for businesses and salons (we have done collaborations with Redken and Joico and the UK’s Green Salon Collective), across the globe. The challenge of changing very ingrained mindsets was overcome by slowly educating hairdressers that our foils were more efficient and nicer to create with.

Women's Biz Magazine

Filling your cup in business I love it when my team is so brilliant and self-sufficient that when I ask them to do something, they have already done it, or they come up with a great idea that really builds on or elevates an existing concept. Seeing my team learn from my guidance and leadership, which then improves the profits and success of the business, also really fills my cup!

Being a leader in business involves many moving parts Now, with home. by Foil Me, we are challenged again with trying to change the mindset of consumers that they can use an alternative to cling wrap, ziplock bags and plastic containers. Considering we only really launched in February this year, we are progressing faster than we did with Foil Me, with steady sales every month.

The work/life balance perspective I don’t actually believe in work/ life balance. One part of your life is always going to have a larger or smaller portion of your time and energy, according to the needs and importance at the time. I think we need to know how to ‘blend’ – knowing when to lean in and when to lean out. Practicing blend follows these key factors (for me, anyway!): B – Bend – to know when to bend towards family and when to bend towards work. L – Love – you have to love what you do and your family. E – Exercise – both for the mind by reading and listening to podcasts, and the body by 28 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

getting the endorphins going. N – Nurture – you have to nurture yourself, your family, your business and your team. D – Defy – stay true to yourself and your vision. Defy those that say no it can’t be done and go and be excellent - and yourself!

Learnings from running your own business Good: the relationships you develop, the appreciation you have for other business owners, the ability to choose when you work, seeing your vision come to life, being able to provide people with a living and seeing their growth, seeing the products and services we provide, gives our Movers so much happiness and make their lives easier. Bad/Ugly: Cash flow issues, staff turnover and leading a team when some days you aren’t physically or mentally ‘healthy’, but you have to push through it. In our business, there are betrayals, copycats, dealing with Movers who don’t pay on time, shipping delays, running out of stock, and competitors controlling your distribution.

Knowing when to lean in and lean out as a leader is imperative – if you are there all the time on your team’s back telling them what to do, it instills a lack of confidence which then affects their performance and ultimately, the revenue and profit in the long run. However, if you let them decide or provide you with their ideas or resolutions, giving them opportunities to demonstrate they can thrive without you holding their hands, they will grow exponentially and make you feel so proud to be their leader. Managing and leading are very different and if I was to hire a leadership role again, it would be based on their ability to inspire and motivate, as well as ensure the team feels equipped, skillset wise, to perform their role efficiently and enthusiastically. When a person feels good about their skills and abilities, they want to do well and this, ultimately, is what a person in leadership should do – help their team feel good about what they are contributing in their role to achieve the vision and mission of the business.

December 2023

When your life partner becomes your business partner Ili and I have been working together for almost 18 years. Granted, with our other two businesses, I wasn’t playing a leading role in the businesses, but we were still working together in terms of discussing business decisions like marketing, branding, pricing, customer service, operations and everything in between. However, Ili and I have been working together as directors for Foil Me for close to 10 years and it is only in the last six months that we have decided to not speak

about work at home as much as realistically possible. To do this, we: 1. Ensure we have weekly meetings at the office together. 2. Agree that as soon as we arrive home, we don’t talk business.

5. Advise our stakeholders, manufacturers and other people or businesses directly involved with Foil Me that we are on holiday, via an email and automatic response.

3. Respect each other’s right to not discuss business by asking if we can talk about it first.

What is the one piece of advice you would impart to someone thinking about starting their own business, or someone who has just started their own business?

4. Ensure we have measures in place and excellent preparation with the team before going on holiday, so we can relax together as husband, wife, and parents instead of co-owners/directors/ co-founders of Foil Me and home. by Foil Me.

Ensure you have your WHY sorted before you begin, because this will help you form your core values and then your vision and mission. Once you have the above elements created, they should guide you in the decisions you will need to make.

About Emily Ciardiello Emily Ciardiello, a former secondary school teacher, has risen to prominence as the Co- Founder and CEO of Foil Me and home. by Foil Me. With innovative, artistic and sustainable beauty products, she revolutionised the hairdressing industry. Her achievements include multiple Business Awards and finalist recognitions, showcasing her leadership and business acumen. Beyond her business success, Emily is a dedicated philanthropist, contributing over $250,000 alongside the Foil Me Movement to various charitable causes through her businesses. Her remarkable journey f rom education to entrepreneurship, coupled with her commitment to giving back, serves as an inspiring example of passion and purpose.

UNLEASHING LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL:

WOMEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF CHANGE By Annie Gibbins

L

et's talk about breaking barriers and rewriting the rules of leadership. In today's fast-paced business world, women aren't just claiming their seats at the table—they're driving innovation, shaking things up, and proving that effective leadership knows no gender bounds. This article is your roadmap, your secret weapon, your go-to guide for unleashing your full-blown leadership potential. We're talking about cultivating unshakable confidence, tackling challenges head-on, and leaving

a legacy that's uniquely yours.

Fuelling the Fire: Cultivating Confidence and Assertiveness Picture this: unbreakable confidence radiating from every move you make. It's not about arrogance, it's about knowing your worth and owning it. Dive into the journey of recognising your strengths, learning from your setbacks, and projecting an assertive presence that commands respect. When you believe in yourself, you're not just

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER:

THREE KEY LESSONS I LEARNED STARTING A BUSINESS AT 59 YEARS OLD By Jenna Chan In 2017, my journey to launch Hair and Skin Science began with just $100,000 and the tenacity I had cultivated over the years as a single mother of two. It wasn't an easy commitment to provide for my family while pursuing my own dreams, but it was a balancing act that I tried to embrace wholeheartedly. Lesson One: Be resilient and keep moving forward

making my family proud and giving our clients the confidence to face the world with rejuvenated hair and skin.

Despite my extensive experience of over two decades in the industry, working with some of the world's most well-known brands, the idea of starting my own clinic at the age of 59 felt daunting. My vision was to make worldclass treatments affordable for everyone, but realising this vision took time, effort and finances that I didn't have.

Although I look back fondly on those days, navigating the ups and downs of business ownership was no easy task. My age and children added an extra layer of complexity to it. Even though I knew the impact this business could have on my children and how our treatments had the potential to redefine skin and hair care in Australia, I still struggled. At that time in my life, I had to learn to be resilient and carry on no matter what. It's a lesson I still practise today.

However, I was still determined to start my own clinic, as I wanted to be able to provide more for my children as they grew older. This, combined with my passion for making premium skin and hair treatments accessible, really pushed me to launch my own clinic. It was never about the numbers for me; it was about

34 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

Lesson Two: Trust your gut When I started my first clinics, they weren't overnight successes. But their turning

point came with a surge in demand following the Covid-19 pandemic, which ushered in an exponential period of growth. It was this pivotal moment when I had to decide whether to expand my business or not. Trusting my gut, I took the plunge and it's a decision that has ultimately made Hair and Skin Science what it is today. While it took me two years to open my first three clinics, I opened twelve more in just 14 months after the stabilisation of the Covid-19 pandemic. And now – at the time of writing – I have 25 locations across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide. This is how I learnt my second key lesson in business ownership, which I pass onto new entrepreneurs: Trust your instincts and go with your gut when making decisions.

December 2023 To this day, I still trust my instincts when faced with important decisions, and many of my most successful hires have been made through this intuitive process. I believe this is what has kept the integrity of Hair and Skin Science intact over the years.

Lesson Three: Keep growing Since the launch of Hair and Skin Science in 2017, I have never ceased my efforts to expand our business in terms of the treatments we offer, our locations and the innovations we pursue. From the very beginning, Hair and Skin Science has remained committed to providing affordable and effective hair loss and skin treatments performed by medical professionals. Our clinics have not only consistently delivered on this promise, they have consistently exceeded it. With treatments performed by

doctors and nurses, we have performed over 100,000 PRP hair loss treatments and 30,000 PRP skin treatments. These aren't just statistics; they are living testimonials to lives transformed and confidence restored. On the skincare front, Hair and Skin Science has also become the premier destination for the famous Vampire Facial. Favoured by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, this groundbreaking technique rejuvenates the skin by harnessing the body's natural resources, leaving clients with a fresh and youthful appearance. I believe our drive to grow has helped establish Hair and Skin Science as a pioneer in the industry. As well as being my personal success story, Hair and Skin Science has become a family business, as I've partnered with my son Royce. He has played a pivotal role in marketing and branding, contributing to the

continued growth and success of Hair and Skin Science. Throughout my years of work in various small cosmetic clinics, I could never have foreseen where I am today. It was the encouragement of loyal clients and friends that inspired me to take the plunge and open my own clinic, and their unwavering support paved the way for my journey. Opening my first clinic at the age of 59 was proof that it's never too late to follow your dreams. My journey has been far from straightforward, but I am deeply grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. At 65, I am proud to say that both my business and I are thriving, and I hope to continue to provide innovative and affordable skin and hair loss treatments across Australia. Today, my clinics symbolise a commitment to excellence. It's not just about numbers; it's about giving our clients the confidence to face the world with revitalised skin and hair.

IMPOSTER SYNDROME:

THE DOUBLE EDGED SWORD. HOW TO EMBRACE IT FOR ULTIMATE CAREER SUCCESS By Kirsten Forgione

E

ver find yourself questioning your abilities? Fearing that your colleagues will ‘see through’ you? That eventually they’ll realise that you’re not as skilled as they think you are? Perhaps you wonder whether your success has been by chance, or luck? That what you’ve accomplished has been a fluke, rather than talent and hard work. You are not alone. There are many of us who feel this way. In fact, it’s something that often torments high-achievers, silently haunting their work-life. Imposter syndrome - it’s that nagging voice of self-doubt and fear. The: ◆ Killer of Confidence that makes you question your decisions and ability, or undervalue your ideas and contributions. Maybe you’ve just been promoted, but when people call you by your new title, you feel like you’re not deserving of the new position and increased responsibility. ◆ Queen of Procrastination -

36 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

that makes you set unrealistic expectations, so you’re hesitant to start or finish tasks for fear of not being perfect. You’ve identified an opportunity to continue working with an important client. But because you’ve only got experience doing exactly this work with one other client, you delay submitting a proposal until you up-skill in this area.

◆ Master of Avoidance - that makes you pass up opportunities you’re completely capable of seizing, or sabotage your own success. Perhaps you’ve started a new business and you’re avoiding business development because you feel like you have much less experience than your competitors… Why bother?!

December 2023 ◆ Seed of Turmoil - that makes you self monitor, inviting emotions like sadness and anxiety to the party. You’ve just received a companywide acknowledgement for your work, or perhaps a business award. You think, “I can’t believe this. The others seem much more successful than me. What if they discover that I’m in fact not as good as this accolade suggests?” The reasons it happens are many and varied, and include: 1. Early experiences: Growing up with parents or other significant figures who (over) emphasised achievement, or who may have been overly critical. Maybe there was a pressure to excel, to be the ‘best’ or the ‘smartest’. 2. Personality: There are some traits that are simply associated with a tendency to internalise, ruminate and experience feelings of worry and stress - like introversion and neuroticism. 3. Social pressures: Being part of a group where approval or worth seemed to be explicitly connected to achievement. For instance, professional associations or ‘high potential’ programs. 4. Comparisons: Constantly comparing oneself to others, especially those perceived as more intelligent or successful. There’s no question - imposter syndrome can take a toll on your work-life. Yet, despite the (often) bad-news story, there are some unexpected upsides to imposter syndrome. And there are ways that it can work in your favour. Imposter syndrome can: 1. Drive excellence: Worrying

about being ‘found out’ means you’re likely to work hard. 2. Encourage learning: Doubting your abilities makes you more likely to recognise your limitations and be proactive in your development. 3. Make you more like-able: There’s research that shows that having these types of thoughts can actually improve interpersonal performance at work. Apparently, it makes us want to ‘prove ourselves’ to others, and because of this, we become more attuned to their feelings. So how can you harness imposter syndrome for your best self? Here are ten suggestions: 1. Acknowledge and validate it. Notice when it’s there, recognise it’s okay, and make a decision to move forward. 2. Reframe your thoughts. Instead of seeing it as a character flaw, reframe it as a sign that you care about your work and want to do your best. Use it as motivation to work harder and smarter.

3. Reconnect with your values. Instead of focusing on outward signs of success and achievement, remind yourself of what you’re working towards, and what really matters to you. 4. Talk about it. Share your feelings with a mentor, trusted colleagues or perhaps a psychologist. It’ll help you get out of your head and gain some perspective. ( Demonstrating vulnerability and authenticity will also likely be appreciated and admired by those around you). 5. Practice self compassion. Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself with the same care and understanding that you would offer to a friend facing similar feelings. 6. Keep a record of your achievements. When imposter syndrome strikes, revisit this list to remind yourself of what you’re capable of! 7. Practice mindfulness. Instead of worrying about what has happened, or what might happen, try focusing on the present moment. And use the opportunity just to pause and reset. WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 37

Women's Biz Magazine 8. Seek regular feedback. Make a practice of getting feedback from those you trust and respect; this way you’ll get a well-rounded view of how you’re being perceived. 9. Anticipate the feeling. Knowing your imposter ‘triggers’ can help you reduce the (negative) effects. 10. Celebrate your wins. Sometimes, the best way to manage imposter syndrome

is to face it head on! So, the next time you feel like you conquered it, honour your efforts!

it - it’s a shared experience among many accomplished individuals.

Imposter syndrome, though frustrating, challenging, and (often) debilitating, can be harnessed for good. If you can embrace the fear and self-doubt as a sign that you care deeply about what you do, it’s likely to propel you forward. Remember, you’re not alone in experiencing

HOW TO HANDLE

FEMALE BULLIES

By Lynn Power, Co-Founder & CEO of MASAMI & Conscious Beauty Collective

I WE ALL WANT TO SUPPORT STRONG WOMEN, BUT SOMETIMES, WOMEN AREN’T STRONG, THEY ARE BULLIES.

spent 30 years in the advertising industry, a career I loved, but it was steeped in “Mad Men” behavior when I joined. Although it has become more gender balanced in recent years and while I’ve seen many women leaders step up into leadership roles, many people would still argue there’s room to improve. One of the challenges I saw in advertising and now in my life as an entrepreneur dealing with loads of other female founders, is that some women are just mean. They are bullies. I know it’s not popular to call other women out on their bad behaviour. We are supposed to be a tribe of women supporting women. And for the most part, that’s very true. I’ve always been a huge advocate of women in advertising – hiring, promoting, championing them, even when they wouldn’t champion themselves. But I’ve also run into a few bad apples. Women whose behavior is so aggressive

and mean that other people don’t want to work with them. They carry on because they have mastered one particular valuable skill set or client relationship, so the company (and employees) endure their bad behaviour. If you find yourself in a position where you are dealing with a mean girl, here’s some of my advice. In my experience, most ‘bullies’’ have not had much coaching, feedback or mentorship. They are mirroring behaviour they see around them (mostly by men) thinking that it will help them get ahead. Sometimes people have become afraid to tell them anything negative for fear of their response. Or they couch feedback in ‘positives’ because they don’t want to hurt their feelings. Or they’ve been like this so long that they are deemed a lost cause. So people walk around them on eggshells or worse, they just badmouth them behind their back.

WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 39

Women's Biz Magazine One of the best things you can do with women like this is to be honest with them, which I know is easier said than done. If you are a peer or someone more senior, you can let them know how their behaviour is making people feel, but do it with kindness. Give them tangible examples and deliver this rationally, not emotionally. Know that they are unlikely to be aware of how bad their reputation is. I’ve seen despised women completely turn it around to become amazing leaders once they realised how they were negatively impacting others. Most people would never want to be perceived as a bully. If you are junior to the bully, then have a conversation with HR or if you’re up to it, with your boss. Focus on how to get your best out of you (not on what they are doing wrong). If you’re not comfortable with that, find a senior leader you trust and ask for advice on how to manage the situation. If it is truly terrible, ask to be moved to a different group. I’ve seen so many people quit out of exasperation over a bad female boss, which isn’t necessary. There are bad bosses everywhere, of every gender, so leaving may be a temporary fix. There’s a difference between someone being a strong woman and being a bully. Strong women can handle feedback, can push back without insulting someone else, can voice their opinions without

putting down other people and can take charge of a situation without ordering people around. Another challenge with bullies is that they hide behind the “I’m just a strong woman” argument. Meaning, when they do get the feedback, they reject it as unfair. Unfortunately, women have had to deal with being called difficult when they are doing the same things as men, like asking for a raise. Or be called argumentative for having a strong opinion. Many times, they are right – it was unwarranted and gender biased feedback. But sometimes, it’s not wrong. So if you receive feedback like this, ask for specific examples. You deserve to understand why this is being said. Then, you can evaluate if the issue is with whoever gave the

feedback, or with you. A little self-reflection also never hurts. But also understand you can’t make everyone happy. Not everyone will like you, and that’s okay. The trick is knowing and understanding when the feedback is reflective of a bigger issue and then taking steps to address it. When people see that you are trying to change or improve, they will often turn into your biggest supporters. If you make the effort to lead with empathy (no matter where you are in your career), that usually goes a long way to solve bad behaviour. People generally want to feel understood, appreciated and heard. Women are strong leaders and will continue to prove that we are excellent bosses, decisionmakers and growth- drivers, for businesses of all sizes.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? By Pooja Bhatia

W

hat's in a name? I would say, absolutely everything. It is the tool that distinguishes existing businesses, products, and services from yours. But just having a unique name isn’t enough. Protection of your business name is critical to ensure the long-term success of your e-commerce business. How is this possible? Through trademarks. A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol, or design used to identify and distinguish your goods or services from those of others. When you register a trademark, you have the exclusive right to use that trademark in commerce. This means that no one else can use it without your permission. There are various forms of trademarks, some of these are

as follows: 1. Word Marks: These are trademarks consisting only of words, letters, or numbers. For example, "Inoberry" for Consulting. 2. Design Marks (or Logo Marks): These are trademarks that consist of a stylised design, logo, or symbol. For example, the Nike swoosh. 3. Combination Marks: These trademarks incorporate both words and a design element. For example, the McDonald's golden arches with the word "McDonald's" written beside it. 4. Slogan (Tagline) Marks: These trademarks are used to protect catch phrases or slogans associated with a brand. For example, Nike's "Just Do It." 5. Colour Marks: These are trademarks based on specific

colours or combinations of colours. For example, the distinctive red colour of CocaCola. 6. Sound Marks: These trademarks are based on distinctive sounds associated with a product or service. For example, the NBC chimes. 7. Shape Marks: These trademarks relate to the shape of a product or its packaging. For example, the distinctive shape of the Coca-Cola bottle. 8. Motion Marks: These are trademarks associated with a moving image or animation. For example, the Intel Inside jingle. 9. Certification Marks: These marks are used to show that a product or service complies with a specific set of standards. For example, the "Fair Trade Certified" logo.

Women's Biz Magazine

10. Collective Marks: These marks are used by members of a group or organisation to identify themselves with a particular quality, origin, or other characteristic. Woolmark is one such example. 11. Non-Traditional Marks: These include marks that don't fit into the conventional categories, like holograms, scents, tastes, or textures. 12. Service Marks: They are used to identify and protect services, rather than products. As you can see there are many different types of trademarks, however, there are few aspects that should be considered when establishing a trademark for an e-commerce business. 1. Name: Choose a unique and distinctive name for your e-commerce business. Make sure it's not already in use by another company in a similar industry. 42 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

2. Logo: If applicable, create a unique and distinctive logo that represents your brand. This can be an important visual element associated with your e-commerce business. 3. Tagline (if applicable): If you have a memorable tagline or slogan associated with your business, you might want to consider trademarking it as well. 4. Domain Name: While not a traditional trademark, your website domain is a crucial part of your online presence. Ensure it aligns with your brand and if possible, consider protecting it. 5. Product/Service Description: Clearly define the goods or services your e-commerce business provides. This helps in classifying your trademark within specific categories. 6. Trademark Search: Conduct a thorough search to ensure the name, logo, or tagline you've chosen is not already in use

or trademarked by another business, in a similar industry. 7. Trademark Registration: Once you're confident that your chosen elements are unique, you can apply for trademark registration through the appropriate governmental agency. 8. International Protection (if applicable): If your e-commerce business operates internationally, consider registering your trademark in other countries where you conduct business. 9. Renewal and Maintenance: Remember to renew your trademark when necessary and ensure that you're using it properly to maintain its protection. 10. Consistent Use: You need to use your trademark consistently. This means using it in the same way, on all marketing materials.

December 2023 Here are five suggestions that you can use to create unique names: 1. Make it catchy 2. Avoid dual-meaning words. 3. Ensure it is non-infringing. 4. Make it unique and distinctive. 5. Avoid using acronyms. Some of the benefits of registering a trademark for your e-commerce business include: 1. Prevents others from using your brand: When you register a trademark, you have the exclusive right to use that trademark in commerce. This means that no one else can use your trademark to sell their goods or services. 2. Builds brand awareness: A registered trademark can help build brand awareness and recognition among your

customers. This can lead to increased sales and profits. 3. Protects your intellectual property: A registered trademark is considered intellectual property. This means that it is protected by law from being copied, or used without your permission. 4. Enhances customer confidence: When customers see that your trademark is registered, they are more likely to trust your business and buy your products or services. As you can see, protecting your logo, taglines, trade or service name is essential to the ongoing success of your business. I am Pooja Bhatia, the Chief Executive Officer of Inoberry LLC. I am currently building three platforms. Dhvaani is one of the platforms which showcases inspiring stories

ANNOYING CHATTERBOXES STRIKE OUT THE FUN OF BASEBALL By Zane Carson Carruth

A

nd not only to the person sitting next to you, but everyone within hearing distance. And that usually includes people at the next table or in the rows below or above you. I am oftentimes an unfortunate witness to such a loud person, who bores their companion and everyone within hearing distance with their constant chatter.

YOU MIGHT THINK YOU’RE WITTY, FUNNY, ENTERTAINING AND THE POOR SOULS BESIDE YOU ARE HAVING THE TIME OF THEIR LIFE LISTENING TO YOU, ENJOYING YOUR PERFORMANCE, BUT THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE YOU ARE JUST PLAIN ANNOYING. 46 | WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

I was subjected to such a person the other night at the Houston Astros baseball playoff game. Let me set the scene - the stadium was absolutely packed, so this was not just another Sunday night baseball game. Despite this, chatterbox didn’t cease his relentless monologue the entire game. I felt sorry for the guy who was sitting next to the chatterbox, because guess what? That poor guy may have really wanted to watch and enjoy the game and not just catch it on instant replay. It was obvious Mr. Chatterbox had no interest in the game and robbed the other spectator of any joy (or frustration for that matter) of watching a live baseball playoff game. Here’s some advice - next time you are in public and feel like what you have to say is riveting and the other person is lucky to have your input, opinion, or description of whatever, I would highly encourage you to stop and read the social cues. Are you having a monologue or a dialogue? There are a number of ways to tell what kind of conversation you’re having. A monologue is a conversation where only one person does all the talking or sharing. The others are merely sounding blocks for your relentless chatter. There is a difference between a real monologue and a delayed reaction conversation. A real monologue only includes what one person has to say; and no questions are asked about the other person’s experience, or for their input. A delayed conversation includes the other person’s thoughts on the topic and begins after you ask them to join in the conversation via opinion, or shared experience. However, the monologue usually picks up after that person has said a few sentences and stopped to take a breath.

December 2023 The dialogue is completely different. It is a conversation between folks sharing ideas and experiences. It’s asking the other person questions regarding the said topic. It is mutually enjoyed by everyone involved.

How do I know so much about monologues vs dialogues? I have caught myself on numerous occasions being the big talker (chatterbox) in the group. That overwhelming chatterbox where no one leaves the social circle enriched, or has an enjoyable time -except me. I have found my own ways to combat my chatter tendencies and open conversation to others. Since my husband is more reserved and reticence than I am, I often turn to him and say “why don’t you tell them about the time…” and then he joins the conversation. He is far more humourous and enjoyable to listen to than I am,

and everyone loves his take on stories or situations. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.

It is socially welcoming to be mindful of the quiet or new person in the group and ask them questions to draw them out. We all have so much to learn by listening and paying attention to our fellow acquaintances or friends. I have been in restaurants on many occasions, with the quintessential chatterbox sitting at the adjacent table talking nonstop. This talker has no idea what they could learn from their dinner companion on any given subject, as they never include them in their diatribe. If you find yourself in the role of the resident chatterbox and start questioning if anyone is really listening. I encourage you to stop talking mid-sentence. If no one notices, then, drop the subject and stop talking all together. Or ask someone else in the group a question and then, be quiet and let them talk.

not only include good listening skills, but also polite and balanced conversation skills. I think we have all been grilled on how to be an active listener, but so often, how to be a good conversationalist, is forgotten about. We have all read the opinion of a highly regarded individual and do you notice you never read praise that the person “talked a lot”. No, you read, “They made me feel like the only person in the room by looking into my eyes and listening to everything I had to say. They made me feel special”. How does one achieve that balance of active listening and relaying an energetic story? First, you observe the social cues being given to you. If you are being asked questions, if people are nodding to what you are saying, then you have their attention. However, don’t take advantage of their attention or their time. Include them in the conversation and practice active listening. By practicing active listening and balanced conversation skills, you will gain friends and make the ones you have feel very special.

A socially mature and decent person makes every effort to draw out, include and ask questions to everyone in their social group. Good manners
