Let me start off by saying how honored I am to be serving as your president this year. We as a club have accomplished so much this last year, and I would like to do even more. I know with your help this can be done. It’s been an outstanding year, and I would like to say thank you to everyone, members and officers. I wish a happy farewell to our seniors, for they will go on to do great things. Also, don’t forget that we remain active over the summer! Remember, key club has been opening doors for everyone with its key members (that’s y’all! you are the key/keys, get it?). Can’t wait for another extraordinary year! Don’t forget to check out the awesome website created by Melanie Louv! http://summitkc.wix.com/2013-‐2014

Relay for Life

This month, Key Club was given the pleasure to join in on the walk to fundraise the research to curing cancer! Many people showed and joined in on the celebration on May 18, 2013 at Legacy High School. This event was from 6 P.M. to 6 A.M., a total of 12 hours of fundraising and strenuous efforts to work toward helping support new research and medicine in preventing a wide variety of cancers. Even before 6 P.M., people of different schools and organizations were building their area with a mixture of booths and activities. This year, the event was located on Legacy High School’s track and football field. Small white bags with one letter centered on the front were placed around the track. The purpose of these bags was soon revealed later to show a person who currently has cancer. The person’s name and a small picture representing the person were printed onto the bag. These bags were located on the rims of the oval that made up the track. On the straight sides, there were the different schools and organizations. We began Relay for Life with an event called the “Opening Lap”. All the people with a school or organization joined together and held up a sign as they walked down the track. Everyone completed one lap and displayed the organization they were from by a poster board. After this, everyone returned to their area and started advertising their booths. Our area’s booth included henna, nail and face painting, and truffles. The Key Club group worked hard to show their spirit and sell as many goods as they possibly could. We would also like to thank Elizabeth Hang, Annie Ledezma, Kristy Joseph, and Junior Sanchez for their contribution into making the booths possible. After advertising and selling for two hours, all the organizations were called from their booths to join in the middle to have a small Luminaria ceremony. A Luminaria Ceremony is a candlelight vigil that remembers those who have lost their lives in their battle against cancer. A survivor spoke of her story with cancer and we walked one final lap around the track in complete silence and darkness. We were supposed to think of those who had lost their lives in their battle. Although some of the Key Club members weren’t able to stay the whole time, I would like to give a hand to Alex Hui who stayed there the entire 12 hours. Relay for Life was very exciting and a new eye-opening experience. For those of you who have missed it this year, please think about joining in on the fun next year!

Play Date

The Mansfield Arlington Tennis Association, or MATA, recently hosted another play date for the youth of the Mansfield and Arlington area. There were many activities for the children to engage themselves in. These children, ages 4-‐10, were part taking in activities such as ball balancing, ball bouncing, throwing, mini tennis, and for the little experts, long tennis!

“Overall, MATA play date was a great learning experience for both me, and the children there. I'm definitely going again!”
