ann lomshek. watercolor portfolio

this portfolio is a compilation of selected watercolor paintings created during the course of study at Kansas State University in Manhattan Kansas. I aimed to capture the sense of place through color, light, shadow, and contrast. Many of these brought opportunity to play with the flow of the process, therefore capturing quite different scenes from day to day.

the relaxed attitude of a graphite or watercolor stroke developed with time as the artist relaxed and opened their observative eye.

The serene scene envisions a family owned grain mill production. Contrast to the study sketches which in actuality is adjacent to a busy intersection.

FLUIDITY

heavy outlining is natural to drawing large forms. breaking free from that restriction allowed the lines to be implied, varied and delicate to make up the detail between forms.

TIMELESS MORNING

sunrise hues create a somber color pallate- an atmosphere reminisce of church bells, fountains running, isolated footsteps on the porous streets.

PANTHEON

the essence of what shading with pencil can do is missing as a result of the juxtaposition of two secondary colors. contrast was fitting as the guiding principle because it is a familiar sentiment to the historical building that has contrasted through the test of time and destruction.

PROCESS

.

the value of being able to draw relative textures similar to reality is expressed more gracefully with varied line strokes and weight. the practice of observation on site supports the artist’s desire to capture expression, mood, or movement of the subject.

hard edges of overlapping color are softened, leaving a very interpretive painting result. iterating the diversity of color but having a different scheme results in a more pleasing palate. patience to create hard edges between colors challenged the development of the artist and painting.
