Digiplexis ‘Illumination Flame’ This PERENNIAL “Foxglove” has thrilled us to no end in our first trial, and, in fact, won “Best in Show” at the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show. A fascinating hybrid (thought to be impossible) 6 years in the making by Charles Valin, it’s a cross between common garden foxglove Digitalis purpurea and its perennial Canary Island cousin Isoplexis canariensis. As a sterile hybrid, it doesn’t make any seed, instead putting all its energy into blooming continuously from Spring thru Fall! And even though it’s sterile, it still attracts butterflies and bees. Multiple, magnificent, huge, non-stop, 3’ tall bloom spikes hold rich Fuschia-pink blooms that face graciously outwards, the better to show off those spotted, golden throats. A bit tropicalesque in color and feel, they’re fantastically staged above the dark green foliar mound to 24” across. Easy to grow, do give it good, loamy soil with compost added to see what it can do! AND it’s adaptable to full sun thru bright shade – just think of the possibilities! We grew it with Fuchsia ‘Galfrey Lye’ (p. 41) and Brugmansia ‘Charles Grimaldi’ (p. 33) – quite nice! With its endless blooming, it makes a terrific choice for a large pot at least 20” x 20”. Sun/ Bright shade. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 8-10. #4167 $9.95 3+ $9.50

How to have a

Fabby Garden We’ve all seen those mixed plant containers, so often offered up as “easy” and “ideal” in so many home and garden magazines, how-to videos and blogs over the last decade. Chock full of plants, they look really cool – don’t you want to make some just like it (of course you do!)? They look really cool until, well, they start growing! I always imagine what they’ll look like in a few months. Look closer at the photos next time and you’ll likely see a mix-mosh of plants with widely divergent requirements. Some will want sun, others shade – you know, like those Coleus-succulent combination pots. Crazy – I know! We realize this may never work out, but they’re so darn pretty! Another big problem I almost always see is that there is usually one plant used that is naturally a large and/or rapid grower that will soon completely overwhelm and smother its fellow pot-mates. Final result: Large plant = 1,

pot mates = 0. Which brings me to the main problem I see with these container gardens, they’re just crammed too full of plants. None of the plants will be very happy. The competition for growing space, root space and nutrients is vicious, and no one in the pot will ever realize their full glorious potential. It becomes fairly obvious, these photo perfect plantings are just that – perfect for a photo taken right after they’re put together. Now, if you’ve ever visited our nursery, you’ll have seen our huge displays of mixed container arrangements and boy, are they healthy and gorgeous! Here’s what I’ve learned over years of trying to make beautiful container displays. Plant multiple containers with 1 plant if it’s going to get large, or several plants of one variety per container. For instance, you would plant one large plant, say, a tall grass, sunflower or Ceanothus in 1 large pot. If they’re smaller growers or annuals, you can plant several of the same variety, so that the pot will look full and fabulous when it reaches full bloom. Each planting is allowed to attain its full glory and you can arrange them to suit your eye by height, color, shape or texture. The beauty of multiple container arrangements is that they will last much longer, because when one container is finished blooming – be it annual or perennial – it can be whisked out of sight to be refreshed by cutting back (perenni-

Alonsoa meridionalis ‘Red’ This South American bloom machine will always remain on my list of Top 10 Faves. Blooms lasting 3 months or more will impress you as much as me. als) or replanted by season (annuals). You’ll get an exciting, ever-changing display, much more interesting and fun to play with. Finally, take note of a few important container growing tips: Use the right size pot to provide PLENTY OF ROOT SPACE and to keep the soil from heating up and drying out too fast – 10-15 gallons and up, especially for larger plants (we use 25 gal). And very important, if you are buying soil, use a good quality “planting mix” not “potting soil”, which is really designed for houseplants and dries out too fast. Fertilize soon after planting with a 1” top-dress of good compost or a good quality slow release fertilizer like Osmocote. Fertilize again whenever you cut back or whenever foliage begins to yellow. Water according to need, and you’ll love your beautiful container arrangements!

Anchusa capensis ‘Blue Angel’ Smothering itself in richest royal blueness, EASY and deer resistant 15” x 15” Anchusa capensis creates a quick explosion of captivating color with its foliage obliterating super dense clusters on sturdy, branching stems. Happiest with plenty of sun – right up in front of your garden or in a container, I love it combined with reds and yellows. Blooms for about a 1.5 months, then cut it back to 3” for a second blast of color. Tolerates some dryness and clay but best in rich, well drained soil. Adored by bees and butterflies, self-sows! Sun. Avg./Low water. Short lived perennial USDA zones 9-10, annual elsewhere. #45 $4.95 3+ $4.50

Orostachys iwarenge “Chinese Dunce Cap” One of our favorite rarities, it’s like growing 3 plants in one! Starting as a low, dense spreading mat (to 12” across) of lovely small blue-grey rosettes, it soon forms a multitude of totally cool, pinkish conical spires inspiring one to imagine a little elfin cityscape. Late Summer thru Fall, the spires reach 6” tall, blossoming with pink and white frilly flowers much like a miniature Echium ‘Tower of Jewels’ (p. 53). Charming! Ideal for containers, rock gardens and fairy gardens! Will die after flowering, but it self-sows and makes side rosettes to repeat its magic every year! Sun/Bright shade. Avg./Low water. Monocarpic USDA zones 5a-10. #2620 $7.95 3+ $7.50

Puya raimondii LIMITED & EXCLUSIVE! Extremely rare and endangered, this ancient marvel, common name “Queen of the Andes,” is the largest bromeliad in the world. Plant geeks from near and far made the pilgrimage to see one of these wonders going into bloom at Berkeley’s UC Botanical Garden last Spring. In its 24th year, the 10’ x 8’ Yucca-like base of radial, slender foliage birthed its spectacular bloom spike, which can reach 30’ in height! 10,000+, 2” white flowers appear in progression up the stalk from June to September. A true phenoma of the natural world, this native of the highlands of Bolivia and Peru blooms only at maturity, after which the plant will die, yielding up a million or more seeds for (hopefully) future generations. Hardy to 20° F, it’s as easy as any other Puya in temperate climates, but do provide very good drainage. Google this rare offering to learn so many more fun facts and ogle the images! Deer resistant! Sun. Low/Avg. water. Monocarpic succulent USDA zone 9b -10. #4442 $24.95 3+ $24.50

Puya alpestris Not a creation of Photoshop! The huge blooming spike above is a 3 year-old in our Spring garden. I call it our “personal-sized” Puya, reaching only 3-4’ tall. The stout spikes amazed visitors who asked “Is it real?” Unearthly, metallic-turquoise blooms 2” across are highlighted with bright orange anthers. Nectar-seeking hummers perch on sterile stems that jut out between flowers. The low-growing, silvery-green mound of sharply hooked leaves keep the deer way. EASY in well drained soil, can be grown in a large container. Hardy to 15-20° F. Occasional Summer water for best appearance. Sun. Low water. Perennial USDA zones 8b -11. #1956 $12.95 3+ $12.50

Old Fashioned

Carnations Meet John Barrington of Somerset, England – the sweetest of gentlemen and the world’s most sincere Carnation devotee.

Passionate about recapturing the long-stemmed Carnations of old, John has made it his life’s work to bring the romance and intense fragrance back to his favorite heirloom.

Dianthus ‘Cheshire Cat’ “Perpetual Carnation” Like a blast from the past, wild and wondrous ‘Cheshire Cat’ was reincarnated by John Barrington to resemble similar “Bizarre” varieties grown in the 1800’s. Large, richly clove-scented blooms (to 4” across) sport pink base petals flecked and streaked with deep, cherry crimson. To 30” x 30” with long, sturdy, arching stems – just imagine the cut flowers! Stick one in your chest pocket to draw the comments! Carnations, like all Dianthus, love drainage, so grow on the edge of a bed for extra vigor and best show. Side-dress with compost several times a year and cut back to 6” anytime to refresh. Sun. Avg. water. Perenial USDA zones 6-10a. #4152 $12.95 3+ $12.50

Find out more about John (in a video!) on our blog!

NEW! Dianthus caryophyllus ‘Chomley Farran’ The only remnant available in the U.S. of the Carnations beloved by plant breeders of the 1700s and 1800s. Sadly, there used to be over 200 of these striped varieties – called “Bizarres” – now lost to cultivation. We’re happy to help preserve this fantastic purple and rose bi-color, bearing 2.5” scented flowers. Branching, footlong stems are perfect for hanging baskets. Cut flowers to die for! Rich, well-drained soil. Sun/Part sun. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 6-10a. #2214 #12.95 3+ $12.50

Dianthus ‘White Rabbit’ “Perpetual Carnation” THE favorite of our wonderful, long-time marketing manager and catalog co-creator Elayne Takemoto, ‘White Rabbit’ takes the prize for best and most swoonworthy fragrance of all our old-fashioned Carnations: sweet, softly clove-scented – not too spicy – with fruity notes, sez Elayne! Pure white and 3.5” across, we love the unusual, curled petals. Held atop arching stems to 18” tall, like all Perpetual Carnations, flowers appear almost year-round if you cut spent blooms. Side-dress with compost twice a year for maximum blooms. Cut back to 6” anytime to refresh. Another from John Barrington. Sun. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 6-10a. #4153 $12.95 3+ $12.50

Luscious frilly double scarlet 4” blooms on long branching stems – perfect for cutting – appear mid-Spring thru Fall and the more you cut, the more you get for bouquets or for melting hearts! To 20” x 20”, it’s best to grow them on the edge of a bed or in a large container (10+ gal). Provide rich, well-drained soil and side dress with compost once or twice a year for maximum bloom. Zaluzianskya capensis “Midnight Candy” Beware – the heavenly fragrance of this rare South African perennial may be highly addictive! As the sun goes down, maroon buds open into a profusion of innocent looking white pinwheels. If you’re in proximity, the fragrance is powerfully delicious, like sweet cake fresh from the oven. Lobelia aguana Extremely rare and wonderful! And a generous gift from our friend Mark Delepine, who acquired this extremely rare Lobelia at a SF Botanical Garden sale.
