Pollinator posse By now most of us gardeners have read about the decrease of insects that is occurring on our planet. Scientists looking at data collected here in the U.S. and in other countries, including nature preserves, are sounding the alarm: over the past 20 years, depending on area, there has been between a 50% and 80% decline in insects. With habitat loss, intensive monoculture, the use of pollinator-toxic neonicotinoids and glyphosate, we are drastically affecting the relationship between plants and insects. There is positive news though. Today I read that France is the first country in Europe to ban all pesticides that kill bees and more than 25 countries have restricted or banned glyphosate. We gardeners are legion, 40-50% of the U.S. population, and there is much we can do: we can manage our own little piece of the earth – rejecting pesticides and herbicides and planting pollinator-friendly plants, no matter our garden style. Each little bit we all do really does make a difference, especially for our local pollinator population. In some cities, bees are healthier and maintaining their population numbers better than in the countryside due to gardeners. We can also begin to ask our cities and

counties to set aside land as designated and managed pollinator plots and join pollinator/invertebrate conservation societies like the Xerces Society. Let’s do it! If this is your first Annie’s catalog – we want you to know that what you’ll see here is a tiny sampling of the more than 2,000 varieties we’re passionate about. Discover the rest, plus useful tips, videos and slideshows on our website. If you’ve never ordered from us, we’d like you to know we grow our plants the old-fashioned way – without greenhouses, in the wind, rain and sun, so they are hardened off when they arrive at your door. We do not use harmful neonicotinoids, herbicides or growth-regulating hormones (that extend shelf life, but often lead to disappointing results in your garden). We provide some of the best packing in the biz and our plants arrive with a chubby root ball and healthy foliage, carefully packed in 4” pots. Now, make Annie Hayes, yourself nice and comfy, have a cup Gardener of tea – and enjoy another year of garden inspiration!

Alyogyne huegelii "Blue Hibiscus" From Western Australia comes this extraordinary DROUGHT TOLERANT and EVERGREEN member of the Mallow family that seems to have grown scarce in the nursery trade over the past few years. Grown from cuttings, our plants display plentiful, luminous and huge rich lavender blooms 4-5” across from Spring thru Fall. Able to reach a multi-branching 8’ x 8’ with deep green fuzzy lacy foliage – we think it’s best to keep it tip-pinched to 4-5’ tall to maintain a nice bushy form (or let the deer do it for you!). Keep it extra happy and healthy with a twice-a-year light side-dress of compost or organic fertilizer like fish emulsion. Can be grown in a large container and overwintered indoors in colder climates. Bees and hummers! Pest-free and hardy to 25-30°F. Sun/Mostly sun. Moderate/Low water. Asclepias fascicularis Adaptable to high and low water, heat and any garden soil – including CLAY – this is possibly the easiest CA native Milkweed you can grow. Many branching stems and long narrow leaves make a bushy 3’ x 3’ form topped with plentiful and pretty 2” creamy-pink flower clusters from June to Sept its 1st year. An important host plant for Monarch butterfly caterpillars and nectar source for other butterflies as well. Gets bigger and better every year and can spread to form small colonies. Deer resistant! Sun/ Part sun. Avg./No Summer water. Perennial USDA zones 6-10. May ship dormant. #2779 $8.95 3+ $8.50

Marvelous Milkweeds

Asclepias speciosa “Showy Milkweed” Much like ‘Davis’ (below left), this is the straight species native to much of the western half of the US. Just as stunning in bloom and pinker in color, the fragrant starry bloom clusters, 4” across, top upright thick 3’ stems. Big smooth green oval leaves instead of silvery ones. Will bring Monarchs and their stunning caterpillars and chrysalises. Needs very little to no Summer water once established, tolerating most soils including clayish. If happy, will form spreading clumps over time. Deer resistant! Sun/Part sun. Avg./ Low water. Perennial USDA zones 4-10. May ship dormant. #125 $10.95 3+ $10.50

Asclepias physocarpa “Family Jewels Tree” Have you grown “Family Jewels Tree”? Oh! But you must! This easy, fastgrowing Milkweed reaches 5-6’ tall with a bushy branching small-tree habit in a couple of months. Sweetly scented pendulant clusters of violet and white starry flowers are followed by intriguingly squishable inflated and hairy lime green seed pods to 3” across. Plentifully displayed against small linear leaves, the pods last for 3 or more months (in our mild climate), creating an arresting display! A host for Monarch butterflies, you get the most, shall we say, distinctive cut branches, luscious in a vase. DROUGHT TOLERANT and DEER RESISTANT. Well-drained soil with some fertility for best, um, show. Self-sows! Sun. Avg./Low water. Short-lived perennial USDA zones 7-10, annual elsewhere. Available in April. #122 $8.95 3+ $8.50

Asclepias speciosa ‘Davis’ Undeniably gorgeous in leaf and bloom, everyone who can should grow our native perennial “Showy Milkweeds” as they are the favorite host for western Monarch butterflies. With distinctinctive silvery downy foliage on upright 3’ stems, it thrives in poor dry well-drained soil as well as clayish and regular garden soil. Bold, FRAGRANT flower clusters 4-5” across of velvety pink and white star-flowers appear from late Spring to late Summer, after which it goes deciduous. But don’t worry, it will return next Spring with more stems. IMPORTANT: May look terrible in a 4”pot and ships dormant until June. Water it a bit the first year and don’t fret if it disappears. It may take several years to settle in and you’ll be delighted with the fruits of your patience. Deer resistant, drought tolerant! Sun/Part sun. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 4-10. #3811 $10.95 3+ $10.50

Cynoglossum amabile ‘Blue Showers’ I’m such a fan of TALL cottage garden flowers. It’s nearly impossible to find the old-fashioned 3’ tall version of Chinese “Forget-Me-Nots” that bear divine French blue 3⁄4” flowers on branching stems. An essential for those who melt for blue blooms – it can be cut back for a second go ’round and self-sows continually here in USDA zones 9-10 for an almost constant production of bloom. Average/Rich soil. Sun/ Half day sun. Avg./Low water. Short-lived perennial/Annual. #302 $5.95 3+ $5.50

Aquilegia caerulea “Rocky Mountain Columbine” Glorious “Rocky Mountain Columbine” boasts one of the largest flowers in the genus AND a much longer bloom season – from Spring thru Summer, with a 2nd flowering late Summer/Fall if you cut it back to 1” tall after bloom. Highly bloomiferous with 2.5” sweetly scented blooms it’s long-lived, EASY and grows to a proper 3’ x 2’. Do give Columbines regular water and composty soil and you’ll never ever see a leaf miner! NEW! Alstroemeria hybrid ‘Tricolor’ Gifted to us years ago by Master Gardener Liz Youngflesh, this is by far my favorite tough, looong-lived and EASY to grow Alstroemeria! First off, it blooms for an incredibly long time – from May thru Fall here in the Bay Area – offering up an endless supply of long-lasting cut flowers. Second, the blooms are extra-large – at least 2.5” across and delectably spotted and striped in pink, white, cherry and gold. Most of all, I prefer these taller-stemmed Alstroemerias, which are not easy to find nowadays (replaced by dwarf varieties) and are much more outstanding in a garden and, of course, more becoming in a vase. Spreading by rhizomes to make a dense patch 3’ tall and 3-4’ across, grow in composty soil for most audacious show. Super in big containers, too. Deciduous, does not self-sow. Sun/Part sun (hotter areas). Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 7-10. #2892 $16.95 3+ $16.50

When planting your garden, it’s a good idea to think

about edging plants. Edgers and trailers deliver a prettier “finished” appearance to the edges of a garden bed. They can cover up less than attractive random rocks, tilting boards or just plain bare soil. Trailers spilling over the edge of a bed can also provide exciting colorful highlights or a solid monochrome foreground against which your colorful bloomers will “pop” more clearly into view. And if you don’t have raised beds, plantings along the edge keep excess water from running out of your garden and onto the pathway – taking your compost or soil with it which, hey, is messy, right? Now, for some folks the front edge of their garden bed may be the only area that has some drainage and “drainage” is very important. Drainage means that water sinks into the soil pretty quickly without pooling on the top. It also means that there are air pockets in your soil so that roots can get oxygen. Yes, roots need oxygen! It helps the roots absorb water and nutrients and also keeps the soil’s important microorganisms healthy, so they can deliver nutrients to

NEW! Cotula lineariloba ‘Big Yellow Moon’ Ultra-fun, amusing and easy to grow! Spreading quickly to create a low, dense matting groundcover to 6” tall and 2’ across, you’ll love the soft, tactile, miniature ferny texture and large (1”) prolific golden dome-like “button” flowers held atop 4” upright wiry stems. Blooms like crazy Spring thru Summer and is superbly suited for trailing over the edge of a bed, over and around rocks or growing out of an old washing machine. Evergreen, but I think it’s best to cut it back to 6-8” across to maintain that tight matting appearance next season. Best in rich, well-drained soil. Adorable cut flowers! Deer resistant! Sun (coast)/Part sun (hotter areas). Avg. (best)/Low water. Perennial USDA zones 7-10. #1907 $7.95 3+ $7.50

Mounding to 1’ tall with trailing stems spreading to 30” across. Super EASY and long-lived. Best in rich, loamy soil. Cut back 6”in Fall. AM sun/Bright shade. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 4-10. #4652 $7.95 3+ $7.50

Dianthus ‘Pinball Wizard’ Just SO beautiful! Like vintage-style carnations but much easier to grow and much more vigorous with upright, less floppy stems! Très romantique 2-3” super double light pink clove-scented blooms are heavily striped and flecked in bright cherry-pink – long lasting and delightful for cut flowers. To 12” x 12”, bloom time begins in mid-Spring and will last until Fall if you snip back spent stems. Handsome blue-green foliage forms a dense, weed-suppressing mat. Enchanting combined with annual Lobelia erinus ‘Fountain White’ (online). Hardy and long-lived if grown on the edge of a bed in well-drained soil or container (3+ gal). Cut back to 4” tall in Fall. Deer resistant! Sun/Part sun (hotter areas). Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 5a-9b. #4983 $7.95 3+ $7.50

how to have a

the roots. What’s more, roots want to be able to grow out into your soil without too much resistance – they don’t want to be squeezed or hit a wall of hard clay. When most plants are stuffed into hard-pan clay they’ll “fail to thrive” and look hungry and stunted. (If you live in an area where heavy clay is most common, do make sure to add some organic material like compost, planting mix – or gravel or lava rock, which creates nice air pockets, until your soil is only ½ heavy clay to start). If you don’t have perfectly drained soil and want to grow plants that need “well-drained” soil, the edge of a bed (especially a raised bed) is a swell place to plant them. Containers and slopes offer another solution if you’re bummed about a mostly clay garden. Many plants, as you’ll read in this catalog, are happiest with good to excellent drainage. Dianthus are famous for requiring plenty of sun and well-drained soil. Since many garden Dianthus/Carnations originate from rocky-slope habitats they’ll “fail to thrive” without these two requirements. So, they only thrive on the edge of a bed (or in a rock garden with very good drainage). On the bright side, they’re right up front where you can easily enjoy their scent and where they’re so handy for cut flowers! Visit our website for videos and more important gardening tips on my “How to Have a Fabby Garden” page!

Sisyrinchium hybrid ‘Devon Skies’ Oh lordy, we are everso-impressed with this amazing hybrid! With flowers like our native “Blue Eyed Grass” but LARGER, this baby bloomed Spring till end of Summer and spread to at least 1’ across. Only 6” tall, it’s EASY and perfect for edging. Doesn’t make seed, so it’s non-invasive, but can be divided to share with friends. Deer, heat, humidity and drought resistant! Sun/Part sun. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 5-10. #2647 $8.95 3+ $8.50

Dianthus plumarius ‘Rose de Mai’ A wild and crazy bloomer. Quickly spreading into a dense, blue-gray mat, 30” across, it bursts into an amazing Springtime display. 100’s of double soft pink, deliciously clovescented 2” blooms continue for a month or two. Cut back to 5” after blooming and side-dress with compost for another round of bloom. Cut back again in Fall. Ideal for draping over the edge of a bed. Well-drained soil a must. Long lived! To 18” tall. Sun. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 3-11. #1420 $7.95 3+ $7.50

Helichrysum argyrophyllum “Golden Guinea Everlasting” Add a fantastic contrastic highlight to your drier garden! Awesome for spilling over rocks, walls or for edging and containers, the small, glistening, almost metallic ever-silvery leaves and stems of this South African native construct a solid, trailing and ground-hugging mat. Perennial USDA zones 5-10. #3283 $14.95 3+ $14.50 Helleborus orientalis ‘Sparkling Diamond’ Ignore them, neglect them — even abuse them — heroic Hellebores are unbreakable, returning every year in late Winter and early Spring despite clay, snails, heat, cold, deer and drought. ‘Sparkling Diamond’ is one of the heaviest bloomers – I counted 41 simultaneous blooms on a single plant last season. Double green-eyed lotuslike 3” blooms. Compost yearly. 20” x 30”. Part Sun/Shade. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 5-10. #4219 $14.95 3+ $14.50

Papaver species “Greek Poppy” My favorite red poppy! “Greek Poppy” just gives off “wildfloweryness” more than any other with its multitude of slender stems and profusion of brightest black-throated, truest red 2.5” flowers over a long period.
