that it may take years to see my ideas made real. The wait is a journey to savor, no need to rush. This is not TV.

GARDENING i

One of my favorite quotes about gardening comes from Tony Avent, renowned owner of Plant Delights Nursery, who said “you don’t know a plant until you have killed it three times.” Though funny, I think what Tony is saying is that to pursue gardening over the long haul requires perseverance and patience. That there aren’t really any gardening “mistakes”, just trials and errors specific to our own local soil and climate from which we learn, each year, how to make a garden that pleases us, brings us wonder, beauty and joy. Patience and perseverance surely aid in our ability to wait … not just to “plant and forget” that slower growing shrub or tree, but to watch and nurture it for several years until we’re rewarded with its full-on glory. Unlike TV shows that pretend to reinvent a front yard in a week(!), we do-it-yourself home gardeners have time to create, discover, and see what really works and what doesn’t. I love to wander around my garden, it’s a wonderful time and place to slow down and just look around. To notice the wildlife, to love my flowers and, like all gardeners, to wait for ideas to percolate on how I can make it better. In a world where everything seems to be moving faster and faster and we’ve got so much instant gratification at our fingertips, I know and love NEW!

NEW!

Salvia gesneriiflora 'Mole Poblano' We received this Salvia a few years ago as ‘Mole Poblano’, though some now say it is indistinguishable from S. gesneriiflora ‘Tequila’. All I can tell you is this GORGEOUS Salvia has BLOOMED LIKE CRAZY and NON-STOP here at the nursery (in bright dappled shade) since Fall 2017! Absolutely stunning brilliant fire-engine red tubular blooms to 3”-long emerging from contrastic black calyces on 8” spikes are AMAZING! Black stems, too! Large emerald heart-shaped leaves. To 7’ x 6’ but can be easily pruned shorter. Rich soil. Deer resistant! Part sun/Bright shade. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zone 8-11. #4907 $8.95 3+ $8.50

Salvia 'Elk Blue Note' My favorite new plant for 2019! You’ll just love the color of the plentiful blooms! Not blue, not purple, but a beautiful royal bluepurple quite unlike any other Salvia. TOUGH EASY and FAST to form a dense compact mound of small olive foliage, it’s loaded with upright wiry stems holding the small S. gregiilike flowers that wave gently in the breeze. Heat tolerant and deer resistant, it’s best in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Shear back occasionally for best habit and rebloom. Hummers! Full sun. Avg./Low water. NEW & LIMITED! Echeveria cante Like a ghostly lotus flower for the dry garden, the exquisite, solitary, stemless and symmetrical rosettes of this rare Mexican succulent can grow to 1’ tall and up to 2’ across. With a line of pink edging, the silvery blue-white leaves display a powdery coating. Summertime brings attractive small coral flaring tubular blooms above upright 18” stems. Requires fastdraining soil. I like to plant them on a slight tilt to avoid water pooling between leaves. Great on garden edges and containers. Hardy to 25°F but prettiest if protected from hard frosts. Deer resistant. Sun/Part sun. Low water/No Summer water. Perennial USDA zones 9-11. #5103 $12.95 3+ $12.50

Darmera peltata “Umbrella Plant” Native to moist woodlands and streamsides of Northern California NEW! and Oregon, “Umbrella Plant” makes a magnificent bold design feature with its enormous leaves 12-18” across. Shade and moisture-loving, it’s adaptable to most soils as long as it doesn’t dry out and is often grown beside water features, under redwoods, in containers (20+ gal) or in a consistently moist area of a garden. In early-mid Spring, delightfully showy clusters of pink flowers appear atop stout upright stems, usually before the foliage emerges – though here at our coastal USDA zone 10a nursery we get foliage and flowers simultaneously. Tough and long-lived, it spreads slowly to 4’ x 4’, so do provide this beauty room to shine. Lovely combined with ferns. Leaves turn red in the Fall! Deciduous. Deer resistant. Dislikes high heat, high humidity and desert conditions. AM sun/Bright shade. Moist. Perennial USDA zones 5-9. May ship dormant. #3356 $9.95 3+ $9.50

NEW! Impatiens tinctoria Rare! Gorgeous! PERENNIAL and deliciously fragrant, many a gardener would do just about anything to get their paws on this legendary Impatiens native to high elevation Central Africa. HARDY TO ZONE 7, it’ll easily reach 5’ x 3’ with upright multi-branching bamboo-like stems. And those flowers! Purest white and 3” across, they’re hooded and beautifully marked in crimson red, appearing from late Spring thru Fall. The fragrance! Like Plumeria, especially in the morning and evening. Deciduous with hard frosts but returns reliably due to its tuberous roots! Easily grown in a large container (20+ gal). Prefers cool Summers – dislikes extreme heat and humidity. Rich, composty soil. Not a seedling thug. AM Sun/Bright shade. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 7-10. #1227 $9.95 3+ $9.50

How We Ship

Lonicera x americana One of the very best honeysuckles you can grow! So rewarding, this prolific bloomer almost smothers its deep blue-green foliage with a mass of flowers in late Spring, with lesser continuous bloom till Fall. Emerging from pink buds, superb large whorls of 2”-long creamy white-blushed pink flowers fade to soft peachy-yellow for a most lovely tricolor effect. Deliciously fragrant even from a distance – like clove perfume! To 12’ x 12’, give it a sturdy support to latch onto and prune back every year or so to refresh. Not fussy about soil. Semi-deciduous. Hummers! Deer resistant! Sun/Part sun. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 6-10a. #5090 $9.95 3+ $9.50

We offer well-established plants in fat, 4” square pots. Our plants are hand-selected and secured by our custom-made, exclusive packaging. We prefer our larger size pot to some of the long, thin containers commonly used by mailorder nurseries. Those

slimmer pots conserve nursery space and reduce shipping costs, but may result in slower plant recovery and growth after transplanting. With a more natural, spreading root pattern, our plants will thrive and delight you with their high success rate!

NEW!

Aster novae-angliae 'Harrington's Pink' This newer variety of the hardy classic “Michaelmas Daisy” was introduced in 1943, so I wonder where it’s been all this time? Profuse clusters of charming 1” finely rayed soft pink blooms brightened by a cherry ring and golden-yellow center captivate the late season on well-branched sprays from mid-late Summer thru Fall. To 4-6’ tall and 3’ NEW! across with mostly upright stems, it’s a good idea to pinch it back in June for a bushier habit. Tough, mildew resistant and long-lived, it’s also tolerant of CLAYISH soil and salt conditions. Combines tastefully with other Asters and is very much the enduring hero in butterfly and cottage gardens. Best in rich soil. Awesome cut flowers and deer and rabbit resistant! Sun. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 4-10a. #5083 $7.95 3+ $7.50

Aster oblongifolius “Aromatic Aster” I LOVE this Aster! Such an easy, astonishing performer and maybe the bloomiest of all Asters! I love the rounded, densely bushy shrub-like habit that looks great in the garden long before it blooms. But oh, come August, you get an ABSOLUTE MASS of 1.25” yellow-eyed lavender “daisies” that practically cover the foliage until November – just when the rest of your garden is winding down! Indestructible, robust and long–lived, it’s also cold hardy and adaptable to rocky, CLAY and sandy soils and coastal conditions. Fairly fast to 30” x 3’. An incredible habitat plant – in bloom it’s always buzzing with bees and butterflies. What else could you want? Deer resistant and drought tolerant? Yes and yes! Sun/Afternoon sun. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 3-10a. #2780 $7.95 3+ $7.50

Eschscholzia californica ‘Apricot Chiffon’ With glorious 2.5” semi-double, apricotblushed-peach blooms over several months, you must try this heart-stopping California poppy. Pair it with sky blue Penstemon ‘Margarita BOP' (left) for my most cherished Springtime combo – they really glow together! Pretty and feathery 14” x 14” dense mid-green foliage. Cut it back to 2” for repeat bloom. Attracts bees and butterflies! Deer resistant! Full sun. Avg./Low water. Short-lived perennial (if kept dry) USDA zones 9-10, annual otherwise. #153 $5.95 3+ $5.50

Nicotiana alata ‘Lime Green’ Easy, versatile and exceptionally long-blooming, I use this plant more than any other in my gardens because it harmonizes so well with everything! This is the old-fashioned, 3’ tall variety, not the awful modern 6” hybrid. Quick-growing to a bushy 30” across, it glows with 1.5” lime-chartreuse starry flowers. Cut back to 6” when it’s finished, side-dress with 1” of compost and it’ll go back into bloom. Rich soil. Butterflies. Deer resistant! Selfsows! Sun (coast)/Bright shade. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 8-10, annual elsewhere. #724 $6.95 3+ $6.50

Penstemon heterophyllus ‘Margarita BOP’ Discovered as a chance seedling by the late Bert Wilson of Las Pilitas Nursery, this hybrid is longer blooming, longer lived and noted for its better adaptability to clay soil. Luminous true sky blue 1.5” snapdragon-like flowers appear in profusion on 18” stems Spring thru midSummer, fading to rosy-lavender as they age. Glossy blue-green linear foliage creates an evergreen mat to 2’ across. Unbeatable blue color for the dry, well-drained garden, rock gardens and containers. Deadhead to prolong bloom. Hummers! Deer resistant! Hardy to 10°F. Sun. Low/No Summer water. Perennial USDA zones 6-10. #4611 $8.95 3+ $8.50

Extra large 4-5” pure white lacecap flower heads appear in profusion floating atop lush ferny emerald green foliage. To 3’ x 2’, you’ll get months of bloom, especially when you deadhead – so pretty in bouquets! Tough, easy, fast and a swell rest stop for butterflies and other pollinators. Self-sows = free plants! Not fussy, but best in rich, welldrained soil. This is not “Queen Anne’s Lace”. Sun/Part Sun. Avg./Low water. Annual. All zones. #1261 $5.95 3+ $5.50

Dahlia ‘Dark Side of the Sun’ Not one of those dwarf “gas station” Dahlias so common nowadays, but a wonderfully rewarding, garden-appropriate Keith Hammett variety that grows 3-4’ tall and 3-4’ across and blooms for months Summer thru Fall, especially with deadheading. A thing of beauty in the garden (or in a large container, 25+ gal.) with luscious chocolate-black foliage in exquisite contrast to the single golden yellow 4” blooms brushed with apricot. Rich, loamy soil. Deciduous. Top dress with 1-2” of compost in Spring for best show. Bees! Cut flowers! Full sun. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 9-10. NEW!

Alyogyne huegelii "Blue Hibiscus" From Western Australia comes this extraordinary DROUGHT TOLERANT and EVERGREEN member of the Mallow family that seems to have grown scarce in the nursery trade over the past few years. Grown from cuttings, our plants display plentiful, luminous and huge rich lavender blooms 4-5” across from Spring thru Fall. Able to reach a multi-branching 8’ x 8’ with deep green fuzzy lacy foliage – we think it’s best to keep it tip-pinched to 4-5’ tall to maintain a nice bushy form (or let the deer do it for you!). Growing in sandy soils in its native habitat, it’ll thrive best in welldrained soil that’s allowed to dry out a for a bit between waterings. Keep it extra happy and healthy with a twice-a-year light side-dress of compost or organic fertilizer like fish emulsion. Can be grown in a large container and overwintered indoors in colder climates. Bees and hummers! Pest-free and hardy to 25-30°F. Sun/Mostly sun. Moderate/Low water. NEW! Alstroemeria hybrid ‘Tricolor’ Gifted to us years ago by Master Gardener Liz Youngflesh, this is by far my favorite tough, looong-lived and EASY to grow Alstroemeria! First off, it blooms for an incredibly long time – from May thru Fall here in the Bay Area – offering up an endless supply of long-lasting cut flowers. Second, the blooms are extra-large – at least 2.5” across and delectably spotted and striped in pink, white, cherry and gold. Most of all, I prefer these taller-stemmed Alstroemerias, which are not easy to find nowadays (replaced by dwarf varieties) and are much more outstanding in a garden and, of course, more becoming in a vase. Spreading by rhizomes to make a dense patch 3’ tall and 3-4’ across, grow in composty soil for most audacious show. Super in big containers, too. Deciduous, does not self-sow. Sun/Part sun (hotter areas). Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 7-10. #2892 $16.95 3+ $16.50

Though it looks like and is often touted as drought tolerant, here in our mild climate gardens we found it thrived happily in rich, well-drained soil with regular water. It tended to wilt in less fertile, drier gardens. Deer resistant. Sun. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 8-10, annual elsewhere. #5036 $8.95 3+ $8.50

As the sun goes down, maroon buds open into a profusion of innocent-looking white pinwheels. If you’re in proximity, the fragrance is powerfully delicious, like sweet cake fresh from the oven. Best and longer-lived in a container, it’ll reach 12” x 12” and flower over a long period. Cut back to 4” tall for a second round of bloom. Sun. Avg./Low water. Short-lived Perennial USDA 9-11, annual elsewhere. 1135 $7.95 3+ $7.50

Brugmansia ‘Pink Velvet’ Perhaps the richest pink of all “Angel’s Trumpets”, we appreciate the flowering habit as the blooms hang straight down, not at an ungainly angle like other pink varieties. A strong grower and heavy bloomer, long-lasting 8-10” scented flowers keep coming Spring thru Fall, perfuming the evening garden like nothing else! Hummers! Fertilize or side-dress with compost several times a year to keep foliage green. Protect from strong winds. 6-8’ tall. Deer resistant! Sun/Bright shade. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones (deciduous 8) 9-10b. #4605 $10.95 3+ $10.50

S weet Temptations

Rosa ‘Grandmother’s Hat’ Our most popular rose! Of mysterious origin and hard to come by, this rose was found in an abandoned garden by the late treasured Bay Area rosarian Barbara Worl. ‘Grandmother’s Hat’ delights with one of the most delicious, old-fashioned spicy scents in the rose world. Healthy, and vigorous to 8’ x 6’ and so floriferous, she’ll flower early Spring (if not pruned too hard), all the way thru Fall with 4-5” fully double pink blooms. Picked fairly tight, they’ll last up to 5 days in a vase. Side-dress with compost twice a year for maximum bloom. Grown on its own rootstock. Full sun. Avg./ Low water. Perennial USDA zones 5-10. #1589 $14.95 3+ $14.50 Viola odorata ‘Duchesse De Parme’ Fragrance delicio! Easy, yet hard to find, these most fragrant of all Violets hail from mysterious origins and are unknown in the wild. Once grown by Empress Josephine at Malmaison, the petite lavender double blooms are intensely scented, inflaming Parma Passion with a single sniff! Blooms in Spring (with lesser Summer bloom) atop a dense, slowly spreading mound of shiny heartshaped leaves to 6” tall and up to 16” across. Use under shrubs or as shade edging, we love them potted up for easy scentual access! Best in rich soil. Can be overwintered indoors in colder climates. AM sun/Bright shade. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 7 -9. #3750 $7.95 3+ $7.50

Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ “Mock Orange” You’ll love hanging out in your garden when this EASY and rewarding heirloom shrub is in bloom! Prized for its heady orange blossom fragrance that carries through the garden, it blooms late Spring thru Summer with a multitude of charming old-fashioned 2.5” single white blossoms held on elegant arching stems. Easy and quick to establish, place it mid to back of bed or somewhere you can enjoy the fragrance! Moderately fertile soil. To 7’ x 6’, cut flowering stems back 1/3 after flowering. Part shade in hottest areas. Sun/Part shade. Avg./Low water. Perennial shrub USDA zones 5-10. #2727 $10.95 3+ $10.50

Fabby Garden Living

e e d h t g e n o

When planting your garden, it’s a good idea to think

about edging plants. Edgers and trailers deliver a prettier “finished” appearance to the edges of a garden bed. They can cover up less than attractive random rocks, tilting boards or just plain bare soil. Trailers spilling over the edge of a bed can also provide exciting colorful highlights or a solid monochrome foreground against which your colorful bloomers will “pop” more clearly into view. And if you don’t have raised beds, plantings along the edge keep excess water from running out of your garden and onto the pathway – taking your compost or soil with it which, hey, is messy, right? Now, for some folks the front edge of their garden bed may be the only area that has some drainage and “drainage” is very important. Drainage means that water sinks into the soil pretty quickly without pooling on the top. It also means that there are air pockets in your soil so that roots can get oxygen. Yes, roots need oxygen! It helps the roots absorb water and nutrients and also keeps the soil’s important microorganisms healthy, so they can deliver nutrients to

the roots. What’s more, roots want to be able to grow out into your soil without too much resistance – they don’t want to be squeezed or hit a wall of hard clay. When most plants are stuffed into hard-pan clay they’ll “fail to thrive” and look hungry and stunted. (If you live in an area where heavy clay is most common, do make sure to add some organic material like compost, planting mix – or gravel or lava rock, which creates nice air pockets, until your soil is only ½ heavy clay to start). If you don’t have perfectly drained soil and want to grow plants that need “well-drained” soil, the edge of a bed (especially a raised bed) is a swell place to plant them. Containers and slopes offer another solution if you’re bummed about a mostly clay garden. Many plants, as you’ll read in this catalog, are happiest with good to excellent drainage. Dianthus are famous for requiring plenty of sun and well-drained soil. Since many garden Dianthus/Carnations originate from rocky-slope habitats they’ll “fail to thrive” without these two requirements. So, they only thrive on the edge of a bed (or in a rock garden with very good drainage). On the bright side, they’re right up front where you can easily enjoy their scent and where they’re so handy for cut flowers! Salvia oxyphora A favorite here at the nursery and named “Elmo’s Sage” by our propagation folks, this rare Salvia from the Andean foothills of Bolivia boasts, shall we say, the “cutest” clusters of super fuzzy vibrant magenta tubular flowers, 1.5” long with a fat lower lip. Held in dramatic eye-catching chunky calyces, the blooms appear 10-15 on each upright 4-5” spike atop numerous erect stems with pretty, glossy and quilted deep green heart-shaped foliage. Blooming mid-Summer thru Fall, it grows to a multi-branching 4’ x 3’. Gently prune to promote dense, strong branching and stems. Rich soil a must. Nice in large containers (20+ gal). Helleborus orientalis ‘Sparkling Diamond’ Ignore them, neglect them — even abuse them — heroic Hellebores are unbreakable, returning every year in late Winter and early Spring despite clay, snails, heat, cold, deer and drought. ‘Sparkling Diamond’ is one of the heaviest bloomers – I counted 41 simultaneous blooms on a single plant last season. Double, green-eyed lotus-like 3” blooms. Compost yearly. 20” x 30”. Part Sun/Shade. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 5-10. #4219 $14.95 3+ $14.50

Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 5-10. #3314 $14.95 3+ $14.50
