President’s Message

Dear Members, Well, the show for 2014 is now history in more ways than one.

It was our first year with Barn Hunt which

had an awesome turnout and was great fun, even as a spectator! Obedience and Rally also had a great entry and astoundingly good dogs, again a sheer pleasure to watch. The Greet & Groom on Thursday was well attended, educational and fun.

Finally the show, with a great entry this year and so many beautiful

dogs. I think we have managed to incorporate new events and gain interest from a wider base for our breed without compromising the history and integrity of the Club's purpose. As a member I always enjoyed the show and have always felt this was the best show anywhere. As a board member I realized that a lot of work went into making the show a success. But, now as President, I'm awed at the amount of work and time that go into making this show the stellar weekend that it is. Kudos to all committees and members whose work and time make this show so great for all of the attendees. Anyone interested in volunteering or who would like to assist on a committee, let me know. I'm sure we can find a job for you! As the show for 2014 was in progress, plans for 2015 were underway with expectations of another great year!

First I want to thank the club for asking me to judge the futurity. I thought the quality and temperament over all was good. The dog I put best had good substance and bone. His neck and shoulders fit well. I felt a few dogs lacked the substance to do what they were bred to do. A few also lacked good under jaw. Over all they were well presented and a credit to the breed. Again thanks for having me judge and your hospitality is great. A well run weekend. George Gordon 4

Judge’s Critique Sweepstakes Judge, Debi Breiter

It was quite an honor to be selected by my peers to judge 68th Sweepstakes for WFTCCS 2014. I want to thank the membership for entrusting me to judge this most prestigious event for our breed. It was a thrill for me. I wanted each exhibitor to feel at ease and have ample time to show and truly present, move, and have fun showing their wire to me, as I would of liked to be judged at a show. I feel that judges need to take note on this for us exhibitors. It takes a lot of time and dedication to get these wires ready for the ring. Which I appreciate as a owner handler myself. Weather during the weekend was forecast to be most erratic and it was. It was a challenge for me coming from the West Coast. Delayed flights and the loss of my luggage for two days. Well, it all worked out for the best thankfully and stars were all in line once again. Speaking of stars there are some up and coming stars in the wire ring over the weekend. The wires presented overall met above and beyond and showed true wire characteristics. They were presented, conditioned very well. In my book they were all winners, but my selection for Best of Sweepstakes was Foxhaus Skyfall At Foxhollow. He was well presented and conditioned. He had attitude and moved well, nice headpiece, dark eye, short body. My type of wire is all male and he caught my eye right from the start when he came in the ring. My selection for Best Of Opposite Sweepstakes was Foxhaus Wyrlake Witchcraft. She was well presented and conditioned also. My type of wire, also very feminine. Typey, beautiful ears and headpiece. Congratulations to all the winners this year. Again, thank you to the exhibitors for showing to me your future winners. It was a thrill for me which I will not forget . Sincerely, Debi Breiter Breitwire

Judge’s Critique by Dr. Jerry Klein, DVM Being asked to judge any specialty is an honor, but when I was asked to judge the 68th Specialty show of The Wire Fox Terrier Club of the Central States, it kind of floored me. This club and its show has had a major impact on me, especially when I was younger. Before I had a car, I would "hitch" down from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio to watch the show, then held at The Lyceum in Glendale, Ohio, Eventually I showed there as well. It was, and still is, one of the premier showcase for my first breed, the wonderful Wire Fox Terrier. This year, I was to be a part of a brilliant idea for owners and fanciers to partake: the Club incorporated Conformation and Sweepstakes classes with Obedience AND Rally Trails! All things Wire Fox! Who wouldn't like that?? I would like to personally thank President Shellie Magraw and the entire club for this honor, and also single out the works of Show Chair Altha Graham and my partner in crime Ring Steward, Carol Beattie. The Club deserves the highest accolades for forward thinking, which, if our sport is to survive, must evolve with these changing times. Bravo! I was looking for Wires that were one piece dogs, that didn't disappoint on appearance on the floor, on exam on the table, and finally on the move. As the Standard states: "Movement is the crucial test of conformation." I must have forelimbs moving like the pendulum of the clock, not breaking in the carpus (wrist), and rear limbs driving with thrust from the hocks. Unfortunately, there were some that did not move properly in the front and others having overdone rears with hocks not flexing (sickle). Some of these came with upright shoulders, ruining any sort of correct balance. I also feel that a great Wire must be sound. Yes, they should have "type", but type is the Standard, and the Standard clearly states the way the forelimbs and the rear quarters should move on the down and back. There is no reason to have to settle for less. Through my judging years, I have learned that I gravitate to proper necks and neck sets onto good shoulder, backs that are short and hard with no slackness, finished with correct tail sets. This to me makes the outline of a Wire Fox Terrier. There were more than a few with upright necks placed awkwardly onto the front, lacking in that beautiful crest, and a few more with tails coming out of their "rears." Some of the younger Wires were a bit out of balance...." in no way leggy" per the Standard, with some being just too long. I hope that with maturity, these issues will resolve, but getting Wires "in balance" has historically been an issue, as in the past, too tall, too long in leg, too long in body, too long in second thigh, too long in hock were secondary problems associated with breeding for longer heads. As for size, I really think the breeders have does a great job. So many more are in the correct zone. Heads were, for the most part pleasing. Ears varied: very few, if any, houndy big ears, but some were placed on the sides of the head, and some not so neatly folding. Coats were fair to great, and presentation was amazing. It is a lot of HARD work to get a Wire Fox ring ready, and my hat's off to all the exhibitors for a job well done. This should not be a hair styling contest, but the coat is an integral part of the breed and of conformation competition. If I had any words of advice to novice exhibitors, it would be that longer furnishings do not make for better if they are loose and fluffy. Look at the successful handlers: they keep it tight and crisp. My Winners Dog was a stallion of a dog, high stationed but with perfect balance of bone and body. Great ears, coat, and, when he got going in one direction, amazing from the side. My Winners Bitch was feminine but with beautiful bone and body, sound, beautifully headed and coated. If dog shows are for the selection of breeding stock, I would place a large bet on her. The final duo of my Best of Breed and Best Opposite Sex were the kind that draw you in with their beauty, and keep your attention with their quality. The breed winner has an incredible head, not just long, but with perfect planes. eyes and ears set perfectly, giving you "that expression." Long, strong neck set onto fine shoulders. Feminine, but strong. The male was beautifully balanced and quite the mover from the side. Presented in perfect condition, he is of the type that I so admire. They were thrilling to see together, but I had to make a choice. Again, thanks to all for making it a great show, and to all the exhibitors for their good sportsmanship and camaraderie.

WFTCCS SHOW CHAIR REPORT – MAY 8TH – MAY 10TH, 2014 The Wire Fox Terrier Club of the Central States celebrated its 68 th Annual Specialty Show at the Eukanuba Hall, Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio. Three days of events have enriched our show and provided activities for all members and spectators. The facilities are excellent and the new activities were great fun! New outdoor rings for Barn Hunt and the addition of Rally and Obedience Trials made an already great show even better! We ironed out a few wrinkles at the Eukanuba Hall and provided a better, more-organized way of photographing the traditional in-ring Class Win photos and Class Placement photos as well as the major win photos at an improved photo set up. Krista Droop, our show photographer, quickly posted the photos on her website for everyone to view and purchase. Jef Adams from Show Dog Video Pros made videos of our show and the DVDs are available for purchase from Elise Singer. Thank you, Elise, for handling yet another job! There are still a few changes in the works for next year, but you will have to come to see just how lovely this new, expanded show is! The Roberts Centre staff was even more organized and helpful than ever. Asst. Show Chair, Carole Beattie, and I met with the heads of each department that dealt with our show in a PreConference meeting and we went over all of the plans for every activity, every room, every audio visual need, every food and refreshment item planned for the entire weekend, just to be sure that we were all on the same page. There were only a few minor glitches from among the literally thousands of details that go into putting together this show. The Roberts Centre staff is a wonderfully organized, friendly and cooperative group of people to work with. I can’t say enough about their contributions to making such a great event. Eukanuba representatives, Vicki Seiler and Jason Taylor, welcomed us with biscuit treat for our dogs and information, and this year added an Instagram Photo Booth where we could take photos of our friends and post them to Instagram, Facebook or chat rooms. The beautiful bronze statue of the Eukanuba Hall Specialty Best in Show winners was located in a place of honor in the lobby for all to see and admire little Sky among the other winners. This year more people must have complied with the deadlines posted regarding the date our block of rooms closed, because no one told me that they had to pay for standard room rate because of booking past the closing of the block. Aren’t we fortunate to have such spacious, beautiful rooms at such a reasonable rate? Thursday’s Barn Hunt was one of the high points for many who attended this year’s show. It was so well planned and executed by a hard-working committee headed by Karen Passow, Gloria Thomas and Donna Johnson, and the Wires and spectators loved it! The outdoor fenced area, the two smaller fenced areas for practice and the large tent to protect from the heat of the day were perfect! Thanks to this event, a sizeable amount of money was added to the WFTCCS Treasury! Thirty-one Wires participated in the Barn Hunt. A special thanks goes to Becky Heiner for judging the Barn Hunt Trial and presenting the Barn Hunt Seminar. Thank you all for making this such a great addition to our show! Following the Barn Hunt the activities moved indoors with Education Committee head, Cara Campbell, hosting the Greet and Groom casual grooming session in the grooming area of the Eukanuba Hall. This is such a great 15

opportunity to share knowledge and to learn grooming techniques. It showed in the performance and conformation rings, as all of the dogs looked their best and were nicely trimmed. Special thanks to Cara and Mike, too, for providing the refreshments for this fun education program. Friday turned out to be a jam-packed day! After the early Board Meeting, Cara again hosted a Breeders’ Forum, where breeders with all levels of experience could ask questions and share experience and laughs on a wide range of topics. The day left little time for a lunch break, as the Rally and Obedience Trials began in the Ring immediately after the Education program. With 41 Wire Fox entries and a lot of interest, the trials showed an abundance of talented dogs and exhibitors. Kathleen Cook did an excellent job as Judge and huge thanks go to Donna Johnson, our Obedience, Rally and Barn Hunt Chair! You do it all, Donna! Thank you, too, for the many volunteers who helped with the Trials! Because of the large entry in the performance Trials, our Futurity and Veteran Sweepstakes started a bit later than the posted time, but it was worth the wait! What a lovely event to honor Wire breeders and the future of our breed. We were very fortunate to have AKC judge, George Gordon, step in and judge our Futurity and Veteran Sweepstakes. Thanks to Elise Singer, MerriLee Henderson and Shellie Magraw, our Futurity was well planned and went flawlessly, followed by the annual Champagne Toast. After dinner on our own, we all celebrated being together with a Welcoming Party in the grand hotel atrium lobby, featuring hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, snacks and a cash bar. We appreciate all of the work that Janice and Joe Wavra and Vince and Sally McConville put into planning this special event. We all had nametags and it was so good to see long-time members go up to and welcome first-time attendees. That just reminded me of the kindness and welcoming spirit of the late Robin Pensinger, who loved a party and showed a genuine interest in getting to know the new folks. Thank you all for a great evening! Our Hospitality Suite in the 5th floor Montgomery Board Room provided a great time to relax, visit, laugh and even catch a bit of the NHL playoffs! Thank you to Greg and MerriLee Henderson and the Board for allowing this change to take place. Early at Saturday’s Show everyone was all abuzz, with Dr. David Weaver and Patrica Fina Weaver’s Catalog Sales and Linda Albrecht and Jackie Thatcher’s Merchandise doing a big business. Everyone enjoyed the pastries, fresh fruit and the coffee bar, as exhibitors busily prepared their dogs for the show. After welcoming everyone to our show and remembering Dan Musser and Joe Goddard, members who had passed away in the preceding year, we had a moment of silence for them and dedicated the show to them. The first event on Saturday was the Puppy Sweepstakes. Puppy Sweepstakes Judge, Debi Breiter, had a nice entry of puppies and managed her ring flawlessly, narrowing the field down to one Best in Sweeps winner. Thank you, Debi! Job well done! After Sweeps we had our annual meeting, conducted by President, Shellie Magraw. Following lunch Mari Morrisey gave an excellent Introduction to the Dog Show for our new spectators and exhibitors. We were so lucky this year to have Carole Beattie, Asst. Show Chair, take on the job of Ring Steward. We are certainly blessed to have this lovely, kind lady step in to help wherever help is needed! 16

This year’s Regular Class Judge, Dr. Jerry Klein, confidently and efficiently handled his ring, giving each entry the same consideration, and afterward made his choices from a lovely entry of beautiful Wires. We were honored to have Dr. Klein judge our Specialty and I am sure he enjoyed his task. Show Secretary, Arden Shaw, is a treasure and I could absolutely not get along without her. Arden spends countless working on our show and is always there to help in case of a question. It is a real pleasure to work with Arden and her assistant, Pat Holmes. I can’t thank the Committees, the Board and the volunteers enough for helping plan and carry out this enormously complicated show. Everyone pitched in. Paul Pruitt was everywhere and the trophies never before looked as good! Thank you everyone. Special thanks go to our fantastic Catalog Coordinator, Martha Smith! The Banquet reservations were in on time and thanks to Dot and Fred Salzberg for making sure the delicious buffet and door prizes were perfect. How thankful we are to have Joe and Janice Wavra and Vince and Sally McConville handling the silent auction and club raffle! Our members bring wonderful Wire things and the Wavras and McConvilles display, raffle and auction them, bringing in thousands of dollars to help pay for our show. They make it all fun and entertaining at the same time. Thank you for your great contribution to the funding, and especially for the fun! New sponsorship of parts of our show, including trophies, medallions, prizes, rosettes, refreshments and catalog printing all helped to underwrite the show expenses. On behalf of all who participate in and enjoy our show, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The trophies, the banquet, the hospitality, the in-ring assistance, the rosettes and ribbons, the catalog, the merchandise, the fun of fundraising at the party and the banquet all contributed greatly to make this one spectacular show! I know there are others whom I have forgotten to mention, because, believe me, “It takes a village.” to put on our show! So, it is with sincere appreciation that I applaud and thank each of you! I welcome your comments and suggestions and look forward to working with you next year. Show dates are May 7-9, 2015. Altha Graham, Show Chair

WFTCCS RECOGNITION FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS Carole has been active in purebred dogs since 1980, when she purchased a Wire Fox Terrier puppy that was the grandson of two famous Wires, Ch. Ayre Dominator and Sunnybrook Spot On. As soon as the puppy was six months old and she saw him, in the ring, Carole was hooked for good. Since then, she has finished over 35 Wire Fox and 50 Welsh Terriers. Her homebreds have had a total of eight Welsh Best In Shows, and two Wire Fox Best in Shows. The Welsh have had both Obedience and Working titles, and one Champion had both a UD and a Tracking Degree. As a hobby and serious breeder, under the name of "SUNSPRYTE", she has had a total of over 90 Welsh and or/ Wire Fox litters. She is the breeder of the only multiple Best In Show littermates, in the history, of the Welsh breed. Those littermates went BOB and Group IV, and BOS, in the 1991 Westminster Show. In 1999, at the Westminster Show, her homebred Welsh won the Terrier Group. She is in the Wire Fox Terrier Club of Central States Breeders Hall of Fame. She is a two-term Past President of both the Welsh Terrier Club of America, and the Greater Venice Florida Dog Club. Other memberships include the Tampa Bay Terrier Club(1981 Charter Member), Welsh Terrier Club of Southern California, Wire Fox Terrier Club of Central States, American Fox Terrier Club, and Greater Atlanta Fox Terrier Club. She is the Chairman of the Judges Education and Judges Mentoring for The Welsh Terrier Club of America. She is also an active member, in two professional Judges Organizations - American Dog Judges, and Senior Conformations Judges. Until retiring in 2006, she was a Professional Member of the American Institute of Interior Designers, and licensed, by the state of Florida, to practice Interior Design, and owned an Interior Design Studio, in Sarasota, FL, since 1969. First granted approval by the AKC, in 1991, to Judge Terriers, Carole is now approved to judge Terrier, Toy, and Sporting Groups, all Poodles, Boston Terriers, Chows and Best In Show. Her International judging assignments include Germany, Finland, Colombia, Venezuela, China, and Bermuda. But we know Carole best as an enthusiastic, passionate member of our wonderful club. Carole has been our show chair for many years and is on top of all aspects of our show. Her devotion to the breed and our club is evident in the time she spends making our show the absolute best. Carole has a knack for organization and we all benefit from her natural talents. Carole and her Sunspryte wires are in our breeders and 30 year members Hall of Fame and in 2005 was inducted into the prestigious Dr. Frank Booth Distinguished Service Award. We couldn’t be more pleased that Carole has been an active and extremely important member of the WFTCCS and we thank her for her devotion and hard work. We are eternally grateful!

A Look Back ~ The Glendale Lyceum Elizabeth and Thomas Carruthers, of the famous Hetherington Kennels, were the reason that our annual show was located in Ohio, and specifically, at the Glendale Lyceum which was a private tennis club. It was located close to their estate in the tree shaded, beautiful village of Glendale, Ohio. In 1985, the last show was held at the Lyceum. This was the 39th Annual Show, and the Carruthers were the hosts of the Wire Fox Terrier Club of the Central States there for 32 years! To attend the Wire Show in that atmosphere was a very unique experience. The building was built in 1891 and is a National Historic Landmark. The show was held in the ballroom which was an elegant room with a stage on one end, French doors, chandeliers, and lots of windows. The after show dinner was always held there on the adjacent light filled porch which overlooked the tennis grounds. The dinner was always elegant, too, with linen tablecloths, silver, and a menu to match. (I remember being served Cornish game hens.) There was a cocktail party before the dinner hosted by the Carruthers at the Lyceum. In earlier days, they hosted the cocktail party at their home. At that point in time, it was difficult to find a place in Glendale to stay overnight, so they called on their neighbors to take in some of their guests for the night! On the Sunday morning following the show, some exhibitors were invited to a private tour of Hetherington Kennels. It was a step back into the dog show world as it was in the 1930’s and 40’s. I was at the last show there in 1985 and took photos, as it felt as if an irreplaceable era was coming to an end. I visited the Carruthers estate and took photos, too. They were famous not only for Wire Fox Terriers, but famous for their herd of Jersey cattle, home of the original “Elsie the (Borden) Cow”. The estate was an Lshaped ranch house, burgundy with white trim. The kennels were attached to the main house on the right, and a screened porch was in between the kennel and the main house on the left. It had a circular drive in front. You entered the kennel through the screen door on the far right. To the left of the house were the barn, garages, fenced pastures, and pond. One of the buildings had a huge portrait of two Jersey cow heads painted on an outside wall similar to the painting of the wire head we use as our logo, which was given to the Club by the Carruthers. In 1985, Nancy Lee Wolf did the sweepstakes and Mrs. Thomas Gately the regular classes. The sweeps winner was Chriswire Curtain Call, and Ch. Albany Cyclone won the breed. I have submitted some photos from that last Lyceum show to illustrate what it was like to show there. There are many familiar faces in the crowd: Wayne and Janie Bousek, Ros Kraus, Bill Voss, Marty Booth, Eve Ballich, Jim Sybor, Jo Hubbs, Hal and Carol Wainwright, Peggy Beisel, George Ward, Tommy and Sue Yates, Ray and Virginia Splawn, Al Pertuit, Joanie Wahl, Pearl Abrahms, Carlotta Howard, Judy Thill, Helen Danish, Mari Morrisey, Irene Rhodes, Virginia Matanic, among many others. Joanie Wahl put a tribute to the “Golden Years” in the show catalog that year, and I have included it in this article. It does sum up the aura that always surrounded the WFTCCS shows that were held at the Glendale Lyceum. (Photos from the show and this article will be in an album in the hospitality room for a Club record of the last year at the Lyceum.) ~ Thank you, Diane Moorman for providing us with this feature & Martha H. Smith for the submission ~ 22

Our Versatile Wires... “Bella" Ch Hiwire Act at Hexham BN CD RE SE CA RATO CGC RL1X CD-C CG Doggie star of Moonrise Kingdom and Animal Planet's Dogs 101 told me about a year ago that she was losing interest in extracurricular activities and was happy to wave me goodbye from the front door so we cut back a bit with our activities. Low and behold this Spring she started looking at me with those "I'm ready to play again" eyes and sure enough she was. She recently earned her Coursing Ability Title which I think is amazing as she will be 13 in September. She ran the last of her 3 qualifying legs for her title covering 400 yards in 23 seconds, to best many of the sight hounds that day. She was a crowd favorite and absolutely a horse of a different color at that trial! She is back to loving Earthdog and earned her 16th qualifying leg at the Senior level this Summer. It takes 3 legs to get the SE title but why end the fun there. At the Senior level the dog has to leave the rat den with a reliable recall to the handler. Bless her little terrier heart for recalling to me and then we celebrate with a run to the car for cookies. She told me she wanted to play the obedience game again so back into the AKC ring we went this Summer and she easily earned her Beginner Novice title with head's up attention heeling, smiles and a wagging tail to the delight of those who were watching. She wants more so we are practicing for Open. Then of course there is Barn Hunt and hoping for two more legs at the Senior level. She love Coursing so we are signed up for more Coursing Trials this Fall. Amazingly her hard coat and color have come back so I might try for her UKC breed title this Fall. After a nasty bout with mass cell cancer in 2012 I have been blessed to be given more time with this amazing dog who brightens my every day and it is an absolute stroke of luck that we have been able to share our life's journey together. ~ Lucia Hackett

What an exciting year this has been for Central States to have their first show with Performance Events. People came from all over the country and it was so nice to meet people who shared my passion for training the Wire Fox Terrier. Big thanks to Altha Graham for coordinating all the events. Also thanks to Karen Passow, Gloria Thomas, Mike & Donna Johnson for taking on this new venue of Barn Hunt, Obedience & Rally. We were all thrilled by it and our 71 entries to support it proved it. This is only our first year. Hopefully as time goes on & the word gets out we'll have more Wires competing in the Performance Events. James Bond was entered in the Open Barn Hunt class. He had just received his Novice Barn Hunt title in March. Unable to get into the 2 Open practice classes being held in NJ, we went in unaware of how he would do. I thought if nothing else we would gain some practice. Much to my surprise he got 2 Open legs. Luckily I found out the next day that our time for the first test was 2 minutes 28 seconds. You have to find the 2 rats in 2 ½ minutes. Because he never had to find 2 rats before it took him a bit longer to figure it out. We had a much faster time on the second test. We got first place in both classes, but we had no competition. Hopefully next year we’ll have more in this class. I also entered him in the Veteran Dog classes. My grooming skills are only for keeping a Wire looking tidy. Thanks to Michael Waters, his brother & Stan Thatcher they trimmed James Bond up to look like the Champion that he is. I got a lot more grooming knowledge by watching them. James Bond came in second in the Veteran’s Sweepstakes & first in the Veteran Dog Breed class. He was the only dog in the Breed ring with titles on both sides of his name Ch. J-Lyn’s Shaken, Not Stirred RN JE RATN. Hopefully with Performance Events coming to Central States this year we’ll see more Wires with Performance titles like James Bond in the future. ~ Patricia Greaves

From the Membership Chairman Dear Club Members, I wanted to write to you about the membership application process. If you have someone interested in joining the club let me know and I can email or mail the application. If you are sponsoring an applicant it is important to know something about them before you agree to sponsor. Yes, we want new members, but we also want new members who will support and help both the breed and the club. Sometimes I have received applications with no real information about the applicant. Incomplete applications either missing information or correct fees will not be voted on. It is up to you and the applicant to make sure they are complete and received before the board meeting. Congratulations to the new members and I hope everyone had a good time at the show!

From The Treasurer August 1, 2014

This year has been a good year for the Club financially. Income for 2013-2014 increased by almost $10,000. The addition of a Barn Hunt and donations received to support various show events contributed $3,000.00 of this increase. Trophy donations and silent auction/raffle proceeds totaled over $7,000.00. Thanks to Karen Passow, Janice Wavra, Lynn Sobin-Comstock, Debi Brieter and their committees for their efforts in insuring the success of these events. Thanks also to our club members that continue to support all of the clubs activities.

Due to the outstanding efforts of our show chair Altha Graham and her committee, club expenses increased only slightly, leaving the club with a $350 net loss. This is a great improvement over the three to four thousand dollar loses the club has experienced over the last few years.

This year, the club will begin delivering our newsletter electronically. This will save the club over $1,000 in printing and postage. I also know that our show chairman is working on additional ways to reduce expenses related to our show. We are moving in the right direction!

Thank you in advance for being willing to support your club as we work to continue our great traditions.

Regards,

Linda Albrecht, Treasurer
