CHAPTER 1 | INTRODUCTION
DESIGN THINKING Start to create solutions by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping
Creating many ideas in ideation sessions
Understand the human needs
STAGE 1 Empathize
Re-framing & defining the problem in human-centric ways
STAGE 2 Define
STAGE 3 Ideate
STAGE 4 Prototype
STAGE 5 Test
Try out the Solutions
“Design thinking refers to the cognitive, strategic and practical processes by which design concepts (proposals for new products, buildings, machines, etc.) are developed. Many of the key concepts and aspects of design thinking have been identified through studies, across different design domains, of design cognition and design activity in both laboratory and natural contexts Source : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hasso_Plattner_Institute_of_Design
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROCESS Identify the problems and find the solution
Reflect on the obtained feedback & refine the solution
Collect information as sketches, photographs & gather data
Gather feedback and comments through presentation of the idea
Sketching & study to understand the use of information and data gathered.
Develop solution
“The Design Process is an approach for breaking down a large project into manageable chunks. Architects, engineers, scientists, and other thinkers use the design process to solve a variety of problems. Source : https://discoverdesign.org/handbook
DESIGN PROCESS EXAMPLE Reflect on the obtained feedback & refine the solution Eg : To introduce self standing shelf & make a bigger pot
Identify the problems and find the solution Eg : No space for gardening
Collect information as sketches, photographs & gather data Eg : Propose area, type of plants, space required Gather feedback and comments through presentation of the idea Eg : Received comments on mounting bracket difficulties and pot too small for plant
Sketching & study to understand the use of information and data gathered. Eg : Sketches on urban planting pot to minimise space usage
Develop solution Eg : Modelling on planting pot rack
