Anova Books The independent publisher with heritage Anova Books are marking the key 2012 anniversaries with a programme of exciting new books. Elizabeth: Reigning in Style (Jane Eastoe) and the Royal Jubilee Postcards (Martin Parr) are published to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year. Meanwhile, Doctor for Friend & Foe (Rick Jolly) is a gripping account of the 1982 Falklands War conflict thirty years ago, and Titanic: A Passenger’s Guide (John Blake) marks the hundred year anniversary of the sinking of the world’s most famous ship. And not forgetting a summer of London Olympics, our London and Olympic-themed books are just the ticket for celebrating this unique event. Looking ahead to the autumn, highlights include our favourite food artisans back with their third book Feasts with Bompas & Parr. BBC2’s Gennaro Contaldo shows us how to cook authentic Italian recipes to suit every occasion, and Sybil Kapoor, one of Britain’s most respected food writers, brings us the beautiful National Trust Book of Simply Baking.

Our forthcoming children’s edition of one of the most popular plays ever written, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, features new illustrations by today’s most-loved children’s artist Quentin Blake. And if you’re looking for quirky gift books just in time for Christmas, we’re launching the new ‘CRAZY’ series with Ukele Crazy as well as rediscovering a slice of British television history with Clangers: Make your own Clanger planet. Anova launched its first digital books in 2011 – one of its early successes was Bradshaw’s Railway Handbook 1866: Volume 1 London and its Environs – and 2012 sees the rollout of an extensive eBook programme available through all good online retailers. As always, a big thank you to our authors, customers and publishing partners for their continued support.

• “a wonderful collaboration – a faithful record of the instinctive cooking that goes on in a typical Indian household” – Vivek Singh, Executive chef at The Cinnamon Club • Shortlisted for the Guild of Food Writers Awards 2009 Cookery Book of the Year

• “Shows how to make delicious recipes inspired by the glorious markets of spain.“ – Food & Travel Magazine

When keen, self-taught home cook Simon Daley tasted his future mother-in-law Roshan's chicken curry for the first time, he was smitten. Simon asked Roshan to teach him her vast personal collection of recipes and now, in their kitchen, a special friendship flourishes. This unique book draws on the extensive repertoire of an exceptional home cook, including traditional dishes passed down from mother to daughter over centuries, from the family's Gujerati roots in India to modern adaptations for life in England today. This is real Indian home cooking with simple recipes and authentic results.

Simon Daley has worked as a designer and art director specialising in cookery books for more than ten years. He is an excellent home cook with a keen interest in the traditions and culture of food. His main aim in this book is to continue the centuries-long process of passing down accumulated wisdom from one generation to the next, by recording his mother-in-law's family recipes.

With more and more of us wishing to eat a varied and healthy diet, this illustrated cookbook and reference combines this demand with Spain's ever-increasing popularity. Jenny Chandler has divided the book by the stalls of the local market: Shellfish and Fresh Fish, Poultry and Game, Meat and Offal, Cereals and Legumes, Olives and Spices, Vegetables, Fruit, Dried Fruits. Each section includes quick tapas, smaller dishes and main meals. Beautiful reportage shots bring the vitality of the market to life and accessible text ensures that even novice cooks can make mouth-watering dishes. Jenny Chandler studied Spanish and Catalan at Bristol and Barcelona Universities. Jenny currently runs the Plum Cooking school in Bristol and teaches regularly in London. She has made television appearances for BBC, HTV and Carlton Food Network. Jenny has also written The Food of Northern Spain. Published in 2005, it was short-listed for the prestigious Andre Simon Food and Drink Book Awards.

■■■■■■■■■■

Stunning modern photography of Simon and Roshan cooking at home, with step-by-step sequences to illustrate the more unique techniques, complements the lively personal text. Over 100 recipes included.

From the famous Boqueria in Barcelona to the tiny village markets of rural Spain, market life and fresh regional products are at the heart of Spanish life and cuisine. The Real Taste of Spain focuses on basic ingredients and core principles to offer simple and delicious Spanish recipes.

In a melding of the fun style of the 'Style Me Vintage' series with a classic cookery book, Vintage Tea Parties is a vintage and thematic take on a traditional afternoon tea book. The current trend for retro-styled events and afternoon tea parties is as much about styling as it is about food and drink and this book will show you just how to achieve your own perfect event. Split into themed tea parties, it will show how to create your tea party: dress your table, decorate your room, do your invitations, costume suggestions, and offer key recipes for food and drink within each theme. Themes include: a Victorian tea party (lace aplenty and dainty cakes), a 1920s speakeasy (cocktails in tea cups and recipes for jazz babies), a 1930s country house party (silk, tweed, high tea with elegance), a 1940s tea dance (for those who like some swing with their tea), a 1950s street party (bunting and finger sandwiches), and a Famous Five-style picnic (ripping ginger beer anyone?). With advice on scaling up into a tea party for many – or down to an intimate tea for two, you can't go wrong.

A lone polar bear decides that he can no longer stay in the arctic as the ice is melting around him and he is hungry. He builds a boat and sails across the oceans picking up other endangered creatures along his way; an orangutan who is surrounded only by the stumps of chopped-down trees; an elephant who is trying to out-run a poacher and a panda without a home. Finally, the boat full of creatures reaches an island that can only be described as paradise. A dodo greets them and assures them that there is enough food and shelter for them all, for eternity. The delighted animals celebrate and dance the night away with all the other island’s inhabitants including the wooly mammoth and saber-toothed tiger. A beautiful book, full of things to talk about and with a very strong environmental message.

Simply Baking Sybil Kapoor 9781907892325 | £25 | September | HB 200 colour photographs | 320 pages | 246 x 189 mm

• An exciting new National Trust baking book with beautiful, atmospheric photography • An inspiring collection of simple, modern recipes using seasonal ingredients from our kitchen gardens, larders, hedgerows and orchards • Sybil Kapoor is one of Britain's foremost cookery writers Baking is one of life's great pleasures and in this beautiful new National Trust cookery book Sybil Kapoor brings together an inspiring collection of baking recipes, both sweet and savoury. She delves into our kitchen gardens, larders, hedgerows and orchards to illustrate different aspects of modern British baking. She shows how key ingredients such as produce from the orchard, grain from the mill or butter from the dairy have shaped British baking and led to a delicious and deservedly famous repertoire of cakes, pastries, savoury bakes and bread. Seville orange crunch cake and blackcurrant meringue pie are just a few of the simple cakes and tarts that can be prepared with fresh dairy ingredients, while pastry and breads from the mill provide a wholesome basis for homemade peach slices and olive and onion scones. Harvest sumptuous apricots, cherries, pears and plums from the orchard for apricot creams and chocolate pear cake, or use the natural abundance of wild herbs, mushrooms and nuts of the hedgerow to produce delicious almond blackberry cake or soft hazelnut macaroons. Sybil's interests in nature and the use of seasonal and local produce reflect the National Trust's current food policy, and combine to make this a unique and exciting baking book for our times.

The Manor Reborn

Britain’s countryside is liberally sprinkled with follies – eccentric, original buildings built for fun by landowners and aristocrats over the centuries. They include prospect towers, ornamental temples, rustic hermits’ cottages, faux prehistoric stone circles, and some buildings that don’t seem to have had any purpose at all!

Celebrated quilt artist Sandra Meech's last book, Connecting Art to Stitch, explored the ways in which fine-art concepts can be taken into stitch to make outstanding pieces of quilt art. In this exciting new title, the author turns her attention to the rules of design, and how they can be harnessed – and broken – to inform your quilt-art work. You will learn how to recognise good design, and the immutable rules all designers need to know. The author's signature practical workshops and exercises help you translate these rules into your own textile work, stimulating your creativity and encouraging you to explore new textures, materials, techniques and compositions. Detailed analyses of textile artists' work provide a breakdown of how design rules can be applied.

A stunning survey of modern illustration that uses older styles of artistic expression to evoke a sense of another time and place. These vintage-style illustrations play with the past, subvert it on occasion, but always feel fresh. Organised into chapters by historical or cultural period, the book features hundreds of the best examples of modern retro illustration. From the ornamentation of Victorian fonts, the stylised angles of Art Deco, the lines of soviet poster art, the influence of Saul Bass and Blue Note record sleeves, to the new slant on photorealism, and the renaissance of punk and comic art.

In Elizabeth’s Sea Dogs Hugh Bicheno turns his attention to a neglected subject to investigate the rise and fall of a unique group of adventurers – men like Francis Drake, John Hawkins, Martin Frobisher and Walter Raleigh. Seen by the English as heroes but by the Spanish as pirates, they were expert seafarers and controversial characters. This riveting new account reveals them for what they were: extremely tough men in extremely hard times. They sailed, fought, looted and whored their way across the globe; in the process, they established a lasting British presence in the Americas, defeated the Spanish Armada, and made Elizabeth I very wealthy, if seldom grateful.

• Compact new paperback edition of the Sunday Times bestseller • Expands on the themes raised in Dan Snow’s hugely popular BBC2 series • A timely reassessment of the Royal Navy’s impact on Britain and its empire

The fourth edition of a new, full-colour annual focusing on all facets of ‘scratch-built’ model shipbuilding, as well as related articles on restoration, archaeology, historical research and marine art. Twenty articles written by a panel of distinguished contributors describe, explain, inform and inspire. Shipwright is an essential volume for any ship modeller or maritime enthusiast.

Empire of the Seas explores the navy’s rise over four centuries from victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588 up to the Battle of Jutland during the First World War. In that time much of Britain’s wealth and power was derived from the oceans. This book tells the story of the navy’s complex expansion, explaining how it laid the foundations of the civil service and the economy, and analysing its enduring impact on our culture, our national identity and our democracy.

John Bowen is the author of several acclaimed titles for Conway and has been at the helm of Shipwright since 1972 when the original quarterly journal Model Shipwright was launched. His editorial experience and depth of knowledge have been key to its ongoing success. Also available

• A fascinating new history of the airship, following the protracted and often fractious development of lighter-than-air technology • Superbly illustrated and featuring a panoply of daredevil characters, whose courage and ingenuity fuelled a succession of ambitious projects • With visceral accounts of triumphant flights and tragic disasters that convey the majesty and danger of these leviathans of the skies Airship charts the history of lighter-than-air craft and examines the construction of the major commercial and military airships of the twentieth century. These include early successes, ill-fated projects such as the twin British behemoths R100 and R101, and tragic losses like the USS Akron and LZ129 Hindenburg – disasters that ultimately heralded the end of large-scale airship production. The book examines the development of German Zeppelins and British efforts to set up an Imperial Airship scheme. It also looks in detail at airship projects initiated by all the major powers, developed for myriad purposes including luxury travel, polar exploration or as aerial aircraft carriers. A result of rigorous historical research, Airship is a new and important work that is simultaneously readable and entertaining.

A Life on the Lines illuminates the world of Britain’s railways during the Age of Steam, seen through the eyes of railwayman Richard Harry Norman Hardy. During much of his early career, from 1944 through to the early 1960s, Richard took hundreds of pictures of life on the railways and the men he worked with, on his Brownie 620 box camera. These unique and largely unpublished images are an evocative reminder of the age of the ‘Big Four’ (particularly the LNER) and of the early days of British Railways. Many pictures capture the railways in wartime, while others feature great personalities such as the poet John Betjeman, providing a nostalgic tribute to Britain’s steam railways.

The Avro Lancaster was the RAF’s most famous heavy bomber of the Second World War. Its success was testament both to the rugged, reliable qualities of this amazing aircraft and the bravery and skill of the pilots, navigators, bombardiers, flight engineers and gunners who crewed it. They relied on their training and experience, supplemented by various pamphlets and manuals that were produced throughout the war. This fascinating pocket manual collates such period literature to provide a unique guide to this awe-inspiring aircraft. The Commandos were created by Winston Churchill in 1940 as a ‘butcher and bolt’ raiding unit to destroy vital targets in German occupied Europe. Recruits had to be extremely fit and demonstrate initiative and toughness. Training courses were developed to cultivate these qualities and to simulate real battle experiences, which included the use of live ammunition. This pocket-book draws on authentic training manuals, lecture notes, course literature and other material from the Commando schools to give a real insight into unit combat operations as raiding parties and later assault infantry. Sections of the book cover survival and fieldcraft skills; night operations; assaulting obstacles; use of equipment; and weapons training, including the Thompson submachine gun, the Bren gun, and the famous emblem of the commandos – the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife. Christopher Westhorp is an experienced editor, writer and researcher with a special interest in military history and aviation. He is the author of numerous works including VJ Day in Photographs, Spirits in the Sky: Classic Aircraft of World War II and The World’s Armies.

• Notorious NME scribe Johnny Cigarettes (neé Sharp) follows up his hilarious 2009 bestseller, Crap Lyrics • A riotous rant through the utter ridiculousness of Rock and Roll • Contains raucous commentary on bad album reviews, dodgy advice in songs, rock star lies, the nonsense of hype and hyperbole, pretentious quotes and music’s most enduring, and hilarious, urban myths Popular music has always attracted the kind of morally bankrupt individuals who are too unhinged to hold down a proper job. And that’s just as well. After all, if your local fishmonger told you he’d just snorted his father’s ashes, you might think twice about doing business with him. But when Keith Richards says it, you think ‘Nice one, Keef!’ and have a flick through your iPod to find ‘Honky Tonk Women’. Mind The Bollocks collects some of the finest stools of wisdom ever to fall from the foul, ill-educated mouths of rock stars. It digs beneath the culture of nonsense surrounding popular music and answers pertinent question such as: Are the X-Factor auditions all they appear to be? Is there really a musical frequency that can make you soil yourself? And which world-renowned rock guitarist sliced his own penis off?

Shit London: Number 2 Patrick Dalton 9781907554735 | £8.99 | October | HB 115 colour photographs | 112 pages | 148 x 194 mm

• After a whole year of a London love-in brought on by the 2012 Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee, Shit London: Number 2 delivers another hilarious dose of what Londoners have to actually put up with every single day • The follow-up to 2011’s bestselling, and utterly hilarious, Shit London • Visit www.shitlondon.co.uk for more hilarity or join Shit London’s 10,000 members on Facebook ‘Nobody is healthy in London. Nobody can be.’ Jane Austen Once all the hype, hyperbole and hysteria of the 2012 Olympics has been discarded in the nostalgia bin, Londoners will be left with all the actual tidying up. But once all that tidying up has been done, Londoners will then be left with the crushing memory that their streets, shops, architecture, culture and heritage was in a brutal state of dereliction. The truth is, no matter what Lord Coe, his PR team and the rest of the world think, the fact remains: London is still shit.

Patrick Dalton was born in London and has lived in London his entire life (not including holidays). Professionally, he is a radio producer who worked for many years at the BBC and later at the London radio station LBC producing a variety of news and entertainment programmes. Unprofessionally, he likes taking photographs. Patrick now works as a freelance radio producer by day and the creator/visionary of www.shitlondon.co.uk by night. As of 2012, Patrick is a regular contributor to Time Out London magazine.

365 Silver Linings

Richard Happer

Stan McMurtry

9781907554681 | £7.99 | September | HB

9781907554612 | £9.99 | October | HB

25 black & white illustrations | 224 pages | 160 x 125 mm

Over 125 black & white cartoons | 128 pages | 180 x 245 mm

• The follow up to the truimphant 365 Reasons to be Cheerful and 365 Reasons to be Proud to be British, • A trip through history’s mistakes turned good – because every cloud has a silver lining! • Contains a happy ending for every day of the year – a perfect present for as well as eternal optimists!

• From the Daily Mail’s perennially popular resident cartoonist, MAC • A hilarious collection of MAC’s best cartoons from 2012 • Following on from the bestselling The Best of MAC 2011, also available from Portico

365 Silver Linings is a book so full of stupid mistakes that you’d think the world would have given up and stopped turning. But, as the saying goes, for every cloud there is a silver lining, and 365 Silver Linings has one for every day of the year on the day it happened. This brilliantly quirky and entertaining book demonstrates that while the old adage of ‘everyone makes mistakes’ may be true, some mistakes are so life-changing that they will be remembered until the end of time – and can even end up making life much, much better for everyone else! Richard Happer is the bestselling author of 2010’s 365 Reasons to be Cheerful (9781906032968) and 2011’s 365 Reasons to be Proud to be British (9781907554391), also available from Portico.

MAC’s annuals have been delighting Daily Mail readers, and his loyal MAC fans, for the past decade, tickling their funny parts with his famous cultural sideswipes and hilarious stabs at the coalition government, international events celebrity shenanigans and the world in general. In 2012, even though the world has changed considerably, with lots of events to celebrate and ridicule, MAC continues unabated in his quest for satirical gold stars, poking gentle fun at all the year’s hilarious headlines, characters and wicked news stories. What will be in this year's book? You'll have to buy it to find out! Stan McMurtry (MAC) has been a social and political cartoonist for the Daily Mail since 1970. He has recently been honoured with an MBE.
