• Ties in to a fantastic new four-part BBC series from the makers of the hit television series Victorian Farm • Shows how many products still on sale in our high street chemists can trace their origins back to nineteenth-century formulations • Full of fascinating facts, remedies and recipes to try at home This is the story of consumer medicine – how high street healthcare emerged in just 50 years and how we still rely on hundreds of formulations and products that can trace their origins back to the nineteenth century. Sun cream, treatments for insomnia, dandruff or warts, perfumes and soaps are all as important today as they were 100 years ago and are still stocked by the local chemist. Accompanying a major new BBC series, this book takes a look at which products were on offer, whether they were effective, and how we can still make use of them today. Providing hints, tips, recipes, remedies and fascinating historical background, this book shows that while the names of products on the chemist’s shelf have changed over time, our hopes and aspirations as consumers remain much the same as our Victorian predecessors.

Pigs have been domesticated in Europe since ancient times, resulting in a variety of magnificent meat products with a fascinating history. The Romans used sausages as a nutritious portable food for their marching legions (centuries later Louis XIV and Napoleon were also known to be fans), while Ardennes ham was praised by the ancient Greeks for its flavour and texture.

Take a bite of a chocolate bar. Besides the pleasure it gives, the bar leads the consumer on a journey from a simple cacao bean on a far away plantation to the final designer bar, but also on a more complex one through history, society, politics and economics. For nearly all its 3000-year history, chocolate was celebrated as a precious healthgiving drink but during the 20th century sweetened chocolate confectionery and bars replaced 'real' chocolate. Today, however, fine chocolate is part of the current food movement, with small artisan chocolatiers and big producers seeking out top quality beans from specific origins.

Private gardens are often places for experimentation, either with untried plants, novel construction techniques or innovative ways of handling space. Some designers use their gardens as ‘gallery spaces’ – perfect representations of the heart and soul of their work. Others may be radically different to a designer’s commissioned projects. That private gardens are the site for experimentation, suggests that a peek through the garden gate will be a privileged look into the future.

Holly Golightly was undoubtedly the role that made Audrey Hepburn a movie icon. Dressed by Hubert de Givenchy and holding the infamous cigarette holder, she played her most memorable part in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Adapted from the Truman Capote novella of the same name, the inspired cast took the screenplay and fashioned it into the touching comedy of a young woman finding her way in the world. 2011 is the 50th anniversary of the release of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and this lavish book pays tribute to its ongoing popularity. The only official companion to be published in association with Paramount Pictures and the Audrey Hepburn Estate, it includes favourite images from the film as well as unpublished behind the scenes footage from the Paramount archives, stories from the set, and a history of the screenplay since the hugely popular film. A celebration of a timeless classic, this is the perfect book for any fan of Hepburn or 1960s film-making.

In this fascinating book, art historian James Hamilton examines the work and life of the illustrator Arthur Rackham. Rackham’s illustrations for works such as Rip Van Winkle, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, Alice in Wonderland and A Midsummer Night’s Dream have attained the classic status of the writings themselves – indeed, in some cases they have become synonymous with them. Rackham himself, however, has previously remained a shadowy figure. As well as featuring exquisite illustrations and sketches, extracts from Rackham’s correspondence and insightful commentary from James Hamilton shed new light on this much collected illustrator.

Hoffmann filled his book with dazzling and gruesome stories and pictures designed to teach children important lessons for life. Heinrich Hoffmann (1809–1894), a doctor in his native Frankfurt (where there is a museum devoted to his work), often told funny stories to put his young patients at ease.

• A wonderful celebration of trees native to Britain and Ireland, from oaks to willows • Each tree portrait has botanical, historical, folklore and tree use details • Richly illustrated with the most beautiful trees in Britain
A celebration of British birds and their songs, from the celebrated artist Madeleine Floyd. Some 50 of her exquisite drawings of birds, along with their eggs, are captured here for fans of her work and wildlife enthusiasts. It includes details of the songs and sounds made by each of the birds, from sparrows and tits, to the lyrical nightingale. The latter has up to 250 different phrases in his song and each performance is a unique composition. Madeleine Floyd is one of Britain’s best-loved artists. She works from her studio in London and is widely commissioned around the world. Madeleine’s creative talent is one of remarkable depth and diversity. She paints, she draws, she writes and she illustrates. This versatility allows Madeleine to produce hugely successful exhibitions and write and illustrate her own books. She has a particular passion for wildlife.
A wonderful celebration and reference book on the native trees of Britain and an insight into trees worldwide, including tree facts, crafts and lore. The beautiful ash, beech, lime, oak, pine, yew, holly, cherry rowan and white beam are just some of the British and Irish trees included. For each portrait the botanical and identification details are complemented by rich historical and folklore details plus the uses of each tree. And, of course, this section is illustrated with some of the most beautiful trees in Britain, particularly those that can be seen at National Trust properties. The overall history of our native trees is also given along with details on ancient trees, rare trees and managing trees. Edward Milner is an environmental consultant and also a filmmaker. He was the filmmaker for the Channel 4 series on trees, The Spirit of Trees.

• 22 unique and baby-specific designs • Suitable for all skill levels from beginners upward • Fully illustrated with 40 colour photographs The birth of a baby is a celebration, and Special Knits is based on our need to create lovingly-made items for new little people, in soft yarns that are gentle against delicate skin. Each stitch is invested with affection and care by the knitter. Some of the designs in this book are simple to make - their special quality lies in the softness of the fabric, usually a cashmere mix. There are other projects where the uniqueness of the design comes from a scattering of beads, a velvet bow, or an organza ribbon that frames the gentle curve of a baby's cheek. In an age of the throwaway, these are garments that will become modern classics, knits to cherish and will be handed down through generations. Debbie Bliss is knitwear designer and hugely successful author. She has contributed knitwear designs to numerous magazines and has made several television appearances during her career. She has her own exclusive range of luxury yarns, which she has used to create the brand new designs in this delightful book of family knits.

Three-Dimensional Textiles with Coils, Plaits, Loops and Nets Ruth Lee 9781906388645 | £19.99 | August | HB 120 Illustrations | 128 pages | 276 x 216 mm
• Innovative techniques with coils, plaits, loops, knots and nets for textile artists • Create two-and three-dimensional structures with simple techniques • Stunning samples and finished textile pieces with embellished stitched work An important book for textile artists looking for new ways of working in two- and three-dimensions, using the techniques of interweaving, looping, twining, knotting, netting and coiling. Traditionally used in basketry and net-making, these simple techniques – which need no machinery and no looms – are perfect for textile artists looking for fresh ideas. A range of tactile materials can be used in these techniques, from yarns to hemp, nettle string, leather, fabric strips and fine rattan to polythene tubing and plastic packaging tape. The author introduces ways to embellish these structures. Each chapter takes the reader through the basics of the construction process with clear how-to illustrations and diagrams in addition to samples and stunning finished pieces. Ruth Lee is a textile artist and knit designer. She has taught knit and non-loom weaving-based techniques for over 20 years. She writes regularly for Knitting magazine and her work is on show at the V&A, London and the Crafts Council in the UK. She is the author of Contemporary Knitting, also by Batsford.
The Found Object in Textile Art Cas Holmes 9781906388461 | £19.99 | September | HB 110 illustrations | 128 pages | 276 x 216 mm
• Taps into one of the most popular textile trends today: the use of the found object • Written by one of the UK’s leading textile artists • Contains a wealth of techniques and inspiration Textile artists have always used found objects, both for decoration and to give their work extra meaning and resonance, and recently the practice has become even more popular. Cas Holmes is renowned for her use of ‘the found’, and her many-layered, atmospheric pieces have been shown around the world. The practice differs from recycling in that the objects often remain ‘themselves’ when they are incorporated into the work. The work is often conceived and built around the found object. The definition ‘found object’ can include a wide range of objects, from natural materials such as driftwood and leaves to old bits of machinery and vintage fabrics. Mundane objects such as CD cases can be used to create stunning pieces of art, or more sentimental items, such as old jewellery, can lend deep meaning to a work. This book contains a wealth of techniques and inspiration for incorporating found objects into your textile work. Cas Holmes is one of UK’s most talented textile artists. She exhibits widely and runs courses at West Dean College. She has written for magazines including The Quilter.

Whether they work with traditional pencils, crayons and watercolours or with a digital pen, fashion illustrators today will find inspiration from these 200 images. This volume collates the best fashion illustration that was captured in the pages of the iconic Harper’s Bazaar magazine from the 1930s to 1970. The publication has been at the forefront of fashion since the 19th century and it is no surprise that it published the best work in this art form. From the mannered shapes of Leon Benigni of the 1930s to the looser outlines of the late 1960s, the book is a beautiful resource for all illustrators.

• A celebration of 3000 years at sea – featuring 360 of the most famous ships in history and fiction • A sumptuously produced art book and work of reference • Contributors include Phil Dawson, Peter Goodwin, Jean Hood, Geoff Hunt, Karl Heinz Marquardt, Colin Jones, John Jordan, Huw Lewis-Jones, Bruce Peter, Martin Robson and James Taylor
Ship brings together 360 of the most celebrated ships in history and fiction in one stylishly produced volume. Each has its unique and fascinating tale to tell, the stories so dramatic that they have been immortalised in evocative artworks and captured in startling photography. Themes include exploration and scientific discovery; shipwreck and cannibalism; mutiny and piracy; human endurance and survival. Ships that excelled in battle or were lost in devastating circumstances are represented, along with those that were the first of their kind – larger, stronger, more powerful, or faster. International in its scope, the ships are organised in alphabetical order, using an artwork, graphic image or photograph as a starting point, with 200 words of text to recall the unique event that marks the ship out for inclusion. The entry is rounded-off with full vessel specification details. Experts in the fields of sailing warships, battleships, ancient and medieval vessels, expeditionary ships, liners and cruise ships, leisure craft and famous literary ships have all contributed to a remarkable volume that is both a scholarly achievement and a visual marvel.

• Examines the changing architecture of passenger ships in the twentieth century • Explores the technical and design inspiration behind some of the twentieth century’s iconic passenger ships, including Île de France, United States, Rotterdam, Canberra, QE2 and Andrea Doria • Extensively illustrated to include many previously unpublished lavish decks and interior photographs Nautical design inspired a great deal of innovative architecture on terra firma in the early twentieth century. The 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs made a broad range of eclectic modern styles fashionable – particularly in the commercial world, whereas Modernism with a capital M, (already the design aesthetic of the pre-Stalinist Soviet Union) was associated with social reform, internationalism and a Marxist ideology. In passenger ship design, however, the picture was complicated by a variety of factors. According to Orwell, ships were seen to represent utopian visions of future paradises, and so represented the ideals of Modernism perhaps more effectively than any structure on dry land ever could. On the other hand they were equally powerful statements of imperialism and of commercial pride. This book examines the development of the Modern Movement in passenger ship design and architecture in the twentieth century, ranging from small excursion vessels, to liners, cruise ships, ferries, and where necessary, freight vessels.

• Explores the seaman’s skills, daily routine, living conditions, tradition, training and role in battle • Brian Lavery’s follow-up to the bestselling titles Empire of the Seas, In Which They Served and the classic volume Nelson’s Navy • Presented in accomplished anecdote-led style based on first-hand accounts, primary documents and a careful examination of naval practice and regulation Brian Lavery, the pre-eminent historian of the Royal Navy, turns his acute and wide-ranging analytical eye on to its ‘lower deck’ – the world of the seamen as distinct from the officers of the ‘quarterdeck’. If not totally overlooked in the grand narratives of the Senior Service the lower deck is often only noticed when it is a problem. Seamen are difficult to recruit, sometimes they mutiny on board ship, they are liable to drunkenness or venereal disease, they tend to desert, or to behave in a feckless manner.
Empire of the Seas 9781844861095 | HB | £20
For the first time in a dedicated volume The Royal Tars of Old England presents the authentic voice, life and social history of the lower deck, how it asserted its independence of authority and as part of this, established a strong and vivid culture with its own scale of values, language and rituals. The volume seeks to convey the character of the seaman, from the early medieval navy through to the post-Trafalgar long peace, his skills and daily routine, his attitudes to those set over him and the regulations they made, and the experience of and contribution to battle as seen from the gundeck or the fighting top.

• Timely publication for the 150th anniversary year of the launch of HMS Warrior • Specially commissioned photography detailing all aspects of the restored ship • Volume includes a brand new set of ship plans together with a superlative collection of original photographs providing an incredible insight into the workings of the Victorian navy
• A celebration of Britain’s most famous railways and locomotives, from the age of steam to modern electric trains • Fully illustrated, in B&W and colour, featuring historical photographs and artworks • Also includes an essential guide to all of Britain’s steam preservation railways
December 2010 marks the 150th anniversary of the launch of HMS Warrior. Built to underline Victorian Britain’s supremacy at sea, she was the world’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship. In 1979 she was rescued from ignominy as an oil jetty in Milford Haven to become the subject of an ambitious restoration programme, and for the last twenty years has been open to the public at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The story of her revolutionary design, career history, and the strange twists of fate that enabled her to survive into an age when her significance in naval architecture would be fully recognised, is described in detail together with the meticulous research that went into faithfully restoring every aspect of the ship. Complete with archival illustrations and photographs, specially commissioned photography, lines plans and diagrams, this is a comprehensive and elegantly produced commemorative volume of a remarkable ship. Andrew Lambert is Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London.
This lavish new volume explores Britain’s most celebrated standard and narrow-gauge railways, offering a comprehensive history of their construction, use and subsequent preservation. It also examines the nation’s most famous locomotives from the earliest days of steam to the modern post-electrification age. Examples include Stephenson’s Rocket of 1829, Sir Nigel Gresley’s ‘Mallard’ and ‘Flying Scotsman’, the ‘Evening Star’ (the last steam engine built by British Railways in 1960), the ‘Duchess of Hamilton’ Coronation class loco, and even today’s high-speed Eurostar and Pendolino trains. Chris Ellis has been a model railway enthusiast since his school days. He has been a magazine editor since the early 1960s, starting out as editor of Airfix. In 1980 he founded Model Trains, which he continues to edit today, now called Model Trains International. Chris Ellis has also written Practical Model Railways, Starting in Model Railways, Model Trains: The Collector’s Guide and The Hornby Book of Model Railways.

• Churchill in his own words from childhood to glorious old age • Collated by a family friend, who had frequent access to his social as well as public life • This is the definitive collection of Churchill's wit and wisdom at an incredible price
• A timely publication that provides a remarkable insight into wartime Britain • An intriguing look at the propaganda poster and appeal of Fougasse’s style • Examines other key aspects of his work, including the London Underground posters, Punch cartoons and public information illustrations
Undoubtedly one of the great orators of the twentiethcentury, Sir Winston Churchill is an iconic figure and Britain’s most famous statesman. This new edition of a classic work records his remarkable military and political career and his extraordinary life (both private and public), mainly in his own words, providing an invaluable record of Sir Winston’s thoughts, opinions, wit and wisdom. This includes the little-known aside that perhaps best sums up his indefatigable character and wry sense of humour, which followed his rallying speech after the evacuation of the BEF at Dunkirk: ‘We will fight them with the butt end of broken bottles because that’s bloody well all we’ve got!’ Kay Murphy Halle was an American writer, journalist, socialite and political campaigner. An intimate Churchill family friend, regular visitor to Chartwell, and favourite of Sir Winston, she spent more than 30 years in frequent company with him. She is credited with persuading Congress to award Churchill honorary U.S. citizenship, an accolade that he considered his most prized public tribute. Kay Halle died in 1997 aged 93. ‘A book to brighten the dullest moments’

Cyril Kenneth Bird, aka Fougasse, was one of the most popular cartoonists and illustrators of the first half of the twentieth century. The images and captions to his Second World War propaganda posters ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives’ are remembered fondly today by the millions who experienced life on the Home Front. Millions of his posters were printed in the early years of the war as part of the anti-rumour/gossip campaign orchestrated by the Ministry of Information, and were displayed in tearooms and restaurants, barber shops and hairdressers, buses, trams, trains, factories and dockyards. This book examines the appeal and impact of his posters, in context with others produced during the war, while also discussing his other work and editorship of Punch Magazine. James Taylor is an art consultant, exhibition organizer and author. He is a lecturer for the National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies and has lectured to audiences worldwide. He is the author of Yachts on Canvas and The Voyage of the Beagle.

• Compiled from authentic leaflets distributed to the British public during WWII • Timely publication for the anniversary year of the Battle of Britain and invasion threat • A revealing and charming addition to Conway’s bestselling quarter-bound pocket-book series
• Compiled from authentic manuals for WWII pilots and ground crew • The text is supplemented with illustrative plans, diagrams and photographs, giving a real insight into the design and operation of this classic fighter • Published in an attractive and authentic wartime format
In June 1940, following the scrambled flight from Dunkirk, the Second World War was brought home to Britain. As the Luftwaffe initiated their bombing campaigns and the threat of invasion grew daily, civilians were urged to play their part in the war effort, and take responsibility for their own survival. Many pamphlets and leaflets were issued with information and advice on a diverse range of subjects, from how to put on a gas mask, how to build a bomb shelter and what to do in the event of an air raid, as Britain braced herself for a protracted conflict, literally on the frontline, fighting alone. The literature drawn together for this evocative pocket-book captures the reality of civilian life during the Battle of Britain. Brain Lavery is one of Britain’s leading naval historians and a prolific author. He is a Curator Emeritus at The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and is a renowned expert on the Royal Navy of the age of sail and during the Second World War.
Developed in 1938 from a Schneider trophy-winning design by the aeronautical engineer and designer R.J Mitchell, the Supermarine Spitfire went on to become the definitive Allied fighter of the Second World War, and ranks amongst the most famous aircraft of all time. Numerous manuals were produced for pilots and ground crew, dealing with all aspects of the Spitfire from engine specs to cockpit layout. This handbook collects together the most useful of these publications, reproducing them as they would have appeared when originally issued to officers of the RAF and other Allied air forces. It is split into key sections including a general history of Supermarine and the Spitfire type and variants, pilot’s notes, flying instructions, emergencies and fighting tactics. Martin Robson is a distinguished military, naval and maritime historian. He completed his PhD at King’s College London, and is a former Caird Senior Research Fellow at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. His published work includes The Battle of Trafalgar and, with Malyn Newitt, British Intervention in Portugal, 1807-1820.

James May’s Lego House provides a complete photographic record of this stunning creation which now proudly holds the Guinness World Record for the largest free-standing LEGO structure. However, this is not a simple recreation of a childhood vision of a house but is fully informed by the ‘simple complexity’ of LEGO’s design philosophy centring around the basic ‘eighter’ brick. Indeed, 3.3 million LEGO elements were used exclusively to create the two-storey house and its incredible fixtures and fittings that range from a washing machine, fully functioning shower and toilet, tables and chairs, baby grand piano and chess set, bed and slippers.

• The perfect gift for frustrated and grumpy golfers! • All golfing life - from golf club car parks to the 19th hole - is ruthlessly exposed to the famous Grump wit
• From the man who brings us such TV delights as Have I Got News From You and Never Mind the Buzzcocks • The hilarious antidote to all those worthy 101 Things You Must Do Before You Die books • Now in a brilliant new format, Can't Be Arsed is the perfect toilet time companion
Following in the curmudgeonly footsteps of One Grump or Two and The Grumpy Driver’s Handbook, The Grumpy Golfer’s Handbook is a compilation of all things miserable about playing golf. Mark Twain famously said, “golf is a good walk spoiled,” but actually it’s a lot worse than that. Golf can be a good life spoiled after you become enraged with the behaviour of a Stableford competitor and bury a sand wedge in a place where it’s impossible to get relief. All the evils of golf are included: the slice, the hook, the snap-hook, the shank, the first tee duff and the yips. There are also sections on annoying hazards, such as lakes, streams, trees, deep bunkers, greenkeepers, dog walkers and bringing along the girlfriend. There are the usual tirades against a variety of golf-themed items: clubhouses, two-tier driving ranges, golf gloves, ladies tees, pitch and putt, the 1-iron, geriatric fourballs, golf magazines, scorecard pencils, Peter Allis, links courses, bizarre putters, metal drivers and winter rules. All in all, a great book for grumps. Ivor Grump has been attempting golf since the tender age of 14. He was the Worcestershire Golf Club’s junior champion in 1976 and has been going downhill ever since. His nadir was losing 13 golf balls at Royal Sandwich and failing to complete the course. Grump is one of the founding members of the PGA (Professional Grumps Association).

Books, television shows and websites are forever ordering us around – 100 things to do before you're 30; 50 albums you must own; this year's must-have handbag; change your life in two weeks. Why – is this an increasingly desperate search for happiness? Perhaps you can, in fact, obtain happiness not by going anywhere or doing anything but instead by reducing your ambitions. This is the philosophy behind 101 Things Not To Do Before You Die. Each chapter begins with a diatribe, followed by a detailed look at the alternative side of the 101 most frequently cited must do's, revealing ugly details not mentioned in existing guidebooks and giving off-putting facts and statistics to quote at holier-than-thou thrillseekers. Here, at last, is the timely antidote to the plethora of ‘101 things’ books so beloved by vaunting adventurers. After all, why must we swim with dolphins? Or read Kafka in Prague? Or go paintballing? Wish-fulfillment lists take heed... 'Not just funny, but right'

• A painfully funny guide to classic playground pursuits that parodies the classic 1970s series Know the Game • Hilarious illustrations and nostalgic comic writing make this a great gift book • Games include: playground football, GBH biking, snowballing, conkers and even some girly games like skipping
Playground Games introduces readers to the essential rules and tactics of centuries-old schoolboy (and schoolgirl) pursuits, which have evolved into complex traditions and customs unintelligible to the casual observer. This hilarious gift book explains the proud and noble history of playground games, taking the reader through the basics - the kit, the rules, the tactics, the training and the moves – so that you can truly rule the playground. Playground Games is a nostalgic treasuretrove and a hilarious spoof of the much-loved sports books that the PE teachers give out to earnest young Olympians. Harry has written a humorous weekly sports column in the Guardian since 1998 and is the author of six books including The Far Corner (runner-up for the William Hill Sports Book Award), Racing Pigs and Giant Marrows (runner-up for the Thomas Cook/Daily Telegraph Travel Book of the Year) and Dribble! An Unbelievable Encyclopedia of Football.

For the first time, this volume of his political cartoons draws from over ten years of MAC’s memorable drawings. Relive the most controversial and memorable news stories from the past few years with MAC's unmistakeable style and incisive, acerbic wit. Bound to raise many laughs, The Best of MAC: The Political Years captures highlights such as George Dubya's 'War on Terror', the credit crunch and, of course, all the old chestnuts – financial irregularity, failing schools and hospitals, sex scandals and that business with expenses. Stan McMurtry (MAC) has been a social and political cartoonist for the Daily Mail since 1970 and has recently been honoured with an MBE.

• A book to send shivers down the spine of any parent who has spent years protecting their children from the slightest bump and bash • A glorious romp though some of the most reckless photos from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s, tagged with side-splitting captions Ah, the past. A time when children could play in the snow without a helmet, crampons and a risk assessment report; when footballs were made from rhino hide and cricket was played with one pad, if you were lucky. When I Were a Lad... looks at the glorious-yet-risky childhoods of yesteryear before the health and safety officers told us we couldn’t do everything because it was too dangerous. It reflects on a time when children were allowed in with the animals at London Zoo; a time before the car seatbelt was invented (let alone used); and a time when you were allowed to dress up endangered species in goalkeeping kit and take penalties against them. The authors have trawled through the major historic archives to find some glorious photo opportunities where the safety angle of the participants was the last thing anyone thought of. Children perch happily on lethal, limb-mangling machinery, stand allsmiles on live crocodiles, feed brown bears with their hands and get scooped from the street by passing tram conductors! These truly were the days that health and safety forgot, back when I were a lad...

• A rich, fulfilling compendium of weather facts, fun and trivia • Perfect for reading on the beach read or a rainy day • The weather is always topical, even if its never tropical! Weather. There’s no escaping it. Good, bad, glorious or indifferent, it’s always there, looking down on us. When two Englishmen meet it’s the first thing they discuss. When two Americans meet the first thing they discuss is how bad the English weather is. And when two Hawaiians meet they are usually too busy sunbathing to talk about the weather. In these days of climate change and concerns over the long-term effects of pollution, we can rapidly see how global weather systems are changing for the worse not only for human beings, but for every creature and micro-organism under the sun. We are all affected by weather.
Campbell's Weather Compendium is an entertaining, informative and fact-filled trivia miscellany of the sun, the moon, the ocean, the atmosphere and anything else that plays an important role in planet Earth’s weather management.

• Discover the truth behind some of rock and pop's classic songs • With profiles of the bands, performers and the girls who were real-life inspirations for some of the 20th century's most famous music and lyrics
• The perfect 'dad rock' gift • With a foreword by former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman
The Girl in the Song tells the stories of 50 women who have inspired classic rock songs. Who was Emily in Pink Floyd's ‘See Emily Play’? What happened to Suzanne Verdal, immortalised in Leonard Cohen's ‘Suzanne’? Did life change for Prudence Farrow after John Lennon penned ‘Dear Prudence’? And whatever happened to 'the girl with mousy hair', an ex-girlfriend Bowie sings about in ‘Life on Mars’? This fascinating book explains how each song came about, when it was released, the impact it had on the charts and then gives a minibiography of the song's muse. Other examples include: ‘Under My Thumb’ - The Rolling Stones (Chrissie Shrimpton), She's Leaving Home’ - The Beatles, ‘Layla’ - Derek and the Dominoes (Patti Boyd), Peggy-Sue - Buddy Holly (‘Peggy-Sue’ Gerron), ‘Maggie May’ - Rod Stewart.
Stars & Guitars combines the best facets of a Who's Who of rock guitarists with a What's What of rock guitars. Featuring more than 200 of the world's greatest and best-known guitarists, it details their instrument of choice, the classic albums and singles the guitar was played on, plus any custom elements that were unique to the model. The book features all of the world's most popular guitars, including the finest creations of Messrs Fender, Gibson and Les Paul. The history of the guitar and the star's relationship with his precious axe are explained, as well as some of the most famous riffs and licks that it produced. Featuring the guitars of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler, Paul McCartney, Carlos Santana, Brian May, Slash, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Tommy Bolin, Ritchie Blackmore, Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughan and many more. Michael Heatley has contributed to many rock music encyclopedias, including the Virgin Encyclopedia of Rock (1996), and music biographies, including Eminem (2001) and Deep Purple (2007). He has written for magazines including Music Week, Billboard and Record Collector.
