• An ‘on-trend' lifestyle guide, full of tips and advice on how to have a lovely home, cook yummy food and look stylish at the same time • Will appeal to anyone who aspires to be a domestic goddess without having to work too hard at it • The Domestic Sluttery website is enjoying great success: 2,000,000 total page views; 11,000 unique users a month; 80,000 page views a month (Google Analytics)

• Now published in a new hardback edition, updated to coincide with the author’s More 4 film documentary based on the book • A major landmark in film book publishing • Traces the history of the medium from 1888 to the digital age

Many women would love to have the domestic goddess thing nailed, to waft around vintage fairs and antique markets for collectable items to furnish their houses with, and to be able to spend all day preparing the ultimate dinner party. But quite frankly women are too busy – working, going out and having fun – to make their lives ‘just so’. But that doesn’t mean that their homes aren’t important; their homes are as precious as their time. The word ‘sluttery’ goes back to the traditional use of the word ‘slut’ – being slovenly, a little messy – which can be a very good thing; it’s freeing. This isn’t a lifestyle guide for Stepford Wives, those kind of aspirations aren’t realistic any more. Instead, Domestic Sluttery offers an aspiration to live life to the full but with permission to make mistakes, to accept that you’re not perfect. Instead of compromising on fun, Siân Meades and her domestic sluts will teach you the quick and easy ways to do domestication on the hop. And will reveal how to make a damn good cocktail!

This new edition of The Story of Film, published to coincide with the fascinating 15-hour film documentary airing in September 2011, updates the most accessible and compelling history of the medium yet published. In this book, film critic, producer and presenter Mark Cousins shows how film-makers are influenced both by the historical events of their times, and by each other. He demonstrates, for example, how Douglas Sirk’s Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s influenced Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s despairing visions of 1970s Germany; and how George Lucas’ Star Wars epics grew out of Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress. Featuring a new introduction by the author, a new generation of film enthusiasts can discover Mark’s fascinating exploration of the unfolding story of film.

• Highly fashionable in the eighteenth century and a foil for discreet eroticism, the faery has fascinated mankind of thousands of years • Accompanied by a wide selection of bewitching paintings and engravings • Beatrice Phillpotts follows the image and influences of faeries, from ancient mythology to modern manifestations of faery stories From folk mythology and classical theatre to contemporary film and dance, the mischievous and playful faery has fascinated mankind for thousands of years. These intriguing and ethereal creatures, with the myths and legends that surround them, have never ceased to inspire artists and illustrators. Although based on earlier myths and traditions, Shakespeare’s ‘A Mid Summer Night’s Dream’ was a huge influence on the fantasies of generations of artists. Highly fashionable in the eighteenth century, faery paintings were a foil for discreet eroticism in a time of prudity, and captured the spirit of national pride in their portrayal of an idealised English landscape. With the invention of photographic techniques came the opportunity to create realistic ‘spirit’ photographs and elaborate hoaxes, which captivated many respected figures. Accompanying the wide selection of bewitching paintings and engravings, Beatrice Phillpotts follows the image and influences of faeries, from ancient mythology, through Shakespeare and Victorian art, to modern manifestations of faery stories.

• Beautiful illustrations from new artist talent Alice Shirley • A wonderful tale of an unlikely friendship • Perfect for young children

• An endearing message about friendship and helping others • Stunning illustrations by up-and-coming new illustrator • A charming gift book for children

A plucky young owlet decides to try and find his own dinner one day and so flies from the safety of his nest into the unknown world surrounding him. Little does he know that his nest is in a tree in the middle of the zoo – and he quickly finds himself face-to-face with a lion. Yet, instead of being eaten, the baby owl and lion become friends. As the zookeeper tries in vain to rescue the owl, the owl comes up with a plan to help the lion escape too. Based on a true story that happened at Paignton Zoo and with stunning illustrations throughout from Alice Shirley. Alice is a graduate of the Byam Shaw School of Art (now part of the London Institute). Her previous book, also published by Pavilion, is Aesop’s Fables. Also available

Isaac is a hedgehog who has only ever been alone – and that is the way he likes it. One day an apple falls from a tree and sticks to the spines on his back. He wiggles and jiggles, but cannot get it off. As he struggles to remove the apple, help comes in the unexpected form of a donkey who cannot reach the apples which fall outside of his paddock. Isaac learns that it is better to have a friend and to be helpful than to be on your own all of the time. Rosie Wellesley was born in London but grew up in Morocco, Pakistan and the West Country. She studied as an undergraduate at L’ecole des Beaux Arts in Aix en Provence and at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford. Last year she graduated from the postgraduate diploma at Prince’s School of Drawing in London. She now lives and works in East London.

The Golden Age of the Country House By Elizabeth Drury and Francesca Scoones 9781907892257 | £14.99 | July | HB 250 black and white photographs | 192 pages | 190 x 225 mm

• Over 250 fascinating archive photographs of life in Britain’s historic homes between 1860–1940 • Accompanied by a lively and anecdotal commentary • A unique photographic insight into the lives of the people who lived and worked in stately homes An intriguing look at the life that was led in the stately homes now cared for by the National Trust in the period between the 1860s to the end of World War II. Over 250 wonderfully evocative photographs from the archives of the various properties tell intriguing tales of the owners and their families, their guests, and the men and women employed in the house and on the estate, what they looked like and what they did day to day. Some of the photographs are records of special events, such as a visit by a member of the royal family, or the coming of age of the son and heir; others give a picture of a normal day in the workings of the household. The book captures unique moments such as the Duke and Duchess of York on their honeymoon at Polesden Lacey and is accompanied by a fascinating commentary from social historian Elizabeth Drury. The book gives a wonderful glimpse into life in the great English country houses. Elizabeth Drury is an art historian, writer and editor. She has contributed to several books on the Victorian period, including The Encyclopedia of Victoriana. She is the author of The Butler’s Pantry Book and co-authored The Victorian Garden Album. She has written Kitchen Memories (National Trust) and Forgotten London: A Picture of Life in the 1920s (Batsford) with Philippa Lewis.

• Her Ladyship, star of Her Ladyship’s Guide to the Queen’s English and Her Ladyship’s Guide to Modern Manners, turns her attention to another tricky area of modern life: how to run a home • She gives you the low-down on burning domestic issues ranging from everyday housework and how to behave around house guests to dealing with cleaners and childminders The perfect gift for anyone who wants to run their home ‘properly’ but practically Ever wondered how to fit the ironing into an already overcrowded schedule? Or needed advice on how to deal with house guests whose political opinions you abhor? In this charming follow-up to the popular Her Ladyship’s Guide to the Queen’s English, Her Ladyship dons the mantle of a modern Mrs Beeton to provide the answers to these pressing domestic questions, and many more. In her trademark lightly humorous but always elegant style, she discusses important issues such as day-to-day housekeeping and routines (exactly how clean do you need to keep your house?), dealing effectively but graciously with ‘staff’ (cleaners, au pairs, gardeners), how to avoid committing social faux pas when entertaining, and useful ideas for getting the children to help with the housework. The book is not aimed at people who live in large country houses, like Her Ladyship, but at anyone who feels in need of a bit of gentle guidance on running a home properly, whatever its size or type, while still coping with the demands of work, childcare and all the other perils of modern life.

• Peek behind the garden door at some of Britain’s grandest estates to discover the traditional crafts of growing, cooking and self-sufficiency from past masters. • From ‘growing your own’ and cooking with herbs to harvesting honey and keeping chickens, there is plenty here to inspire the modern gardener. • Stunning historical walled gardens, orchards, dovecotes, fishponds, deerparks and vineyards across the country give a fascinating insight into how Britain’s landscape has evolved over the centuries. Britain’s great estates and country house gardens offer a wealth of inspiration to the modern gardener. Traditional methods have been used in kitchen garden estates since medieval times and have much to teach anyone who wishes to make their own outdoor space a model of self-sufficiency. Covering fruit and vegetables, herbs, orchards, beekeeping, fish ponds, dovecotes and poultry, dairy and the farmyard, the deer park and game, hops and vineyards, Kitchen Garden Estate will encourage and inspire everyone, whether you have acres of land, an allotment or are simply growing herbs on your windowsill.

• Discover the extraordinary beauty of Britain’s magnificent countryside and coastline. • Three leading British landscape photographers celebrate the diversity of Britain’s natural heritage – from the fells and lakes of Cumbria and the wilderness wetlands of the Fens to the granite columns of Giant’s Causeway and the spectacular Cornish coast. • This dramatic voyage around fields, forests, rolling hills, hidden harbours and rocky cliffs, captures the unique and remarkable beauty of the British coast and countryside.

• Make some garden friends – an array of plants, animals, insects, birds and other wildlife that will help you maintain a happy, healthy outdoor space. • Practical advice on which garden friends to encourage – from slug-munching toads to aphidrepelling marigolds – and the small changes needed to your garden to keep them there. • Whether you want companion planting, pest control or simply need some plants to do the work for you, gardening in harmony with nature has never been easier.

Over a hundred years ago, the National Trust was founded to preserve places of historic interest and natural beauty in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Today it protects around 252,000 hectares (623,000 acres) of land and over 700 miles (1126km) of coastline. This exquisite collection of photographs reveals the true beauty of Britain’s countryside and coastal heritage. The variety is unmatched – from the fells and lakes of Cumbria and the wilderness wetlands of the Fens to the granite columns of Giant’s Causeway and the spectacular beaches of the the Cornish Coast. This collection is not just a celebration of Britain’s diverse and extraordinary beauty but also the photographer’s art. Three leading British landscape photographers capture unforgettable images of Britain’s remarkable natural heritage, and encourage the preservation of our unique countryside and coastline for future generations.

Introducing helpful wildlife into your garden will help to control pests, maintain a natural chemical-free balance and encourage your garden to bloom, whether you have a large garden, an allotment or a simple window box. Some plants are great ‘friends’ and are endlessly useful – sweetpeas are good for regenerating tired soil, for example, while marigolds repel pesky greenfly away from your prized cabbages. Hedgehogs, bats and frogs are also renowned pest-munchers, while bees, butterflies and other insects will happily pollinate your flowers, fruit and vegetables. This practical guide describes the wonderful wildlife that is helpful to have in your garden and how to spot them. Packed with hints and tips on how to encourage the critters into your space and make sure they stick around, this guide is a must-have for any gardener. Ed Ikin is the Head Gardener at Nymans (the National Trust garden). He is one of their most innovative and energetic gardeners. He is passionate about gardening with nature and was a contributor to the bestselling Gardening Secrets (National Trust Books).

BATSFORD BRITAIN

Harold Briercliffe (1910–94) was the Rochdale-born author of this series of cycle touring guides, which were spin-offs from the magazine Cycling. These lightweight books, easy to keep in saddlebags, helped open up the countryside to postwar cyclists. Mark Jarman was the cycling consultant on Britain by Bike and was the National Planning Officer with the Cyclists' Touring Club and in more recent years has been working with the engineering charity, Sustrans.

£9.99 | June | PB | 20 Line drawings and maps | 160 pages | 180 x 120 mm

9781849940382 | PB | £9.99

Fully revised and updated editions of the classic cycling guides by Harold Briercliffe. Used as the inspiration for the Britain by Bike television series and a vital part of the award-winning Britain by Bike book by Jane Eastoe, the original books have been updated and are being released for today’s growing cycling community.

This edition covers cycle routes in The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales, and the North East Coast, plus shorter tours around the Ribble Valley, Forest of Bowland, around Pendle Hill, Bronte Country, Lancashire Coast, Lunedale and the Pennine Link. It also covers shorter trips around the Plain of York, and from Pool to Richmond.

Harold Briercliffe was the Alfred Wainwright of cycling and his books provide great insight into cycling in various parts of the UK. His routes have been reworked by cycling expert Mark Jarman for today’s cyclists but much of his original insight into the experience of cycling are still on the page, as are his thoughts on Britain’s towns, villages and landscape at the end of the 1940s. The books include the original photographs taken by Harold Briercliffe and the original illustrations. Simple but clear line maps are also provided.

• New compact edition of the award-nominated Brian Cook’s Landscapes of Britain The illustrations of Brian Cook from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s have become iconic. His use of heightened colour, in a flat colour poster style, is much imitated, but never surpassed. His jacket covers for the Batsford series of books that celebrated British life are now very collectable. This collection of his best work is a beautiful publication that should be enjoyed not only by collectors but all lovers of good design and illustration. Brian Cook describes his working processes, the printing process – innovative at the time – that allowed him to pioneer his characteristic bold colours, and the design principles and practical methods of his craft. A stunning book for designers. Brian Cook is the nephew of the late Harry Batsford, chairman of the family publishing firm from 1917 to 1952. He himself became chairman of the company in 1952. His design work, almost exclusively for Batsford, was pioneering and timeless.

• A fascinating A–Z tour of England that brings to life all the places – in life and in fiction – associated with Charles Dickens • Fully illustrated with evocative line drawings and photographs of surviving locations • Published to coincide with the 2012 Dickens bicentenary celebrations Dickens’s England details the towns, villages, streets and buildings with connections to Dickens’s life, and explores the fascinating landscape of his imagination, that mixture of fact and fantasy inhabited by the memorable characters in his novels. Arranged as a gazeteer, the book explores a world that is largely hidden or demolished, but still leaves traces today. Quoting liberally from the novels themselves, it brings to life Mr Pickwick’s Bath, David Copperfield’s Yarmouth, Nicholas Nickelby’s Yorkshire, the Kent of Great Expectations and the London of Oliver Twist and Bill Sikes. The book is illustrated with images contemporary to the time and more up-to-date photographs that reveal a Dickensian atmosphere still lingering in the 21st century. The book also covers the places associated with Dickens himself, including his birthplace in Portsmouth and the site of the blacking factory where he famously worked as a child. There are over 200 entries, taking us from London to Liverpool, from Bath to Birmingham, plus a chronology of Dickens’s life and maps. Endlessly fascinating, Dickens’s England is the perfect companion for Dickens fans, tourists and armchair travellers alike.

• A beautifully assembled Manchester United history using the successful Then and Now format • Features the houses, the stadia, the training grounds, the fans, the players and the dramatic changes to old Trafford over 100 years Manchester United Then and Now takes a nostalgic look at the way football’s most charismatic club has changed over more than a century. Starting with its earliest form, Newton Heath LY&R, the book traces United’s railwaymen roots, visiting the previous stadia in Manchester where they played before the move to Old Trafford in 1910. Scenes of past triumphs and tragedy are revisited and photographed as they look today. From the FA cup celebrations of 1948 to the dark days of Munich in 1958, historic photos are given a new context. Archive pictures of old training grounds, long forgotten digs, players’ favourite bowling rinks, even their old cars are featured alongside their modern-day counterparts. There are short histories of the four United legends, Sir Matt Busby and the trinity of Law, Best and Charlton. Plus there is a comprehensive visual history of the evolution of Old Trafford from the 1920s with a single stand to its present-day majesty. Manchester United Then and Now gives a unique insight into the history and heritage of the most successful English Premiership club. Michael Heatley is the former editor of The Footballer and Matchday magazines. He has also written for national publications, including 4-4-2 and the Radio Times. He is the author of Football Grounds Then and Now, A History of Football, Football Club Origins and Nicknames, Lost Football League Grounds and The Football Grounds Factbook. He has interviewed many players and managers over the years, including George Best and Edwin van der Sar.

• One of Britain's most-loved cities celebrated in the bestselling Then and Now series • Charming contrast of old and new photographs of Liverpool's landmarks and some unknown gems • From Albert Dock to Birkenhead, Goodison Park to Southport, a photographic tour of the city past and present Liverpool Then and Now takes the reader on a journey through a city once considered the ‘second city of empire’. So great was the volume of commerce flowing through the port of Liverpool in the nineteenth century that it sometimes eclipsed London. Some 70 historic photographs of Liverpool’s past are paired with specially commissioned contemporary views taken from the same vantage point. You can see the same streets and buildings as they were 'then' and as they are 'now'. It includes Lord Street, Albert Dock, Speke Airport, Goodison, Anfield, Lime Street Station, the Mersey Tunnel, plus the ferry across the Mersey and the place where it was famously celebrated in song, The Cavern. There are also some of Liverpool’s closest neighbours, Birkenhead, New Brighton, Bootle, Port Sunlight and the glorious Victorian promenades of Southport. Part of the bestselling Then and Now series, this charming contrast of old and new photographs highlights the stunning changes – and enduring character – of one of the most loved cities in Britain, Jonathan Schofield has been a North West Blue Badge Guide since 1996, showing off LIverpool with enthusiasm and passion. As a guide he has brought fifty different nationalities to the city on tours and through study programmes. He's written and broadcast extensively about the city across the North West.

• Advice on how to paint attractive, loose and spontaneous watercolours. • Practical step-by-step demonstrations show how to make your paintings full of light and movement. • Jake Winkle is an up-and-coming artist who is building a big following among amateur painters

• New in paperback • Advice from leading British painter on how to work quickly and ‘capture the moment’ in oils • Illustrated with the author’s atmospheric, accomplished paintings

Jake Winkle’s paintings are full of light and movement, and a key feature of his technique is that he doesn’t work in the traditional way of light to dark but by placing the darks first. In Light and Movement in Watercolour, his first book, he demonstrates how to paint watercolours in a loose, direct way by step-by-step demonstrations and practical projects. Watercolours are often spoiled by a desire to be entirely truthful to the subject matter, which can lead to overworked and tight paintings. Jake’s loose approach avoids those problems. He looks at subject simplification and shows how to focus on shapes rather than objects and demonstrates how to capture the essence of the scene with freshness and clarity. The main topics in this book are: Understanding Watercolour; Building Confidence; What to Paint; Shapes, Tones and Colours; Dark to Light; and Freshness and Clarity. Jake Winkle’s work is exhibited widely, notably at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Society of Equestrian Artists. Jake has undertaken commissions for organisations like the National Trust, Waitrose and town councils. He is a popular tutor and writes regularly for The Artist magazine. This is his first book. Robin Capon is a freelance art journalist and author. He writes regularly for The Artist and Leisure Painter magazines and is author of more than 30 books on practical art.

One of the attractions of painting outdoors is the challenge of capturing the spirit of a place – changing light, weather and transient conditions demand particular painting skills if they are to be interpreted effectively. Oil paint is as good for painting on site as it is for painting in the studio; it is remarkably responsive; can be applied in many different ways; and it allows time to assess and modify work in progress. In this fascinating book, David Curtis shows how he achieves such expressive and original results using drawings, paintings and stage-bystage examples. He gives detailed explanations of his two main working methods – for plein-air paintings and for studio compositions – as well as helpful guidance and advice on choosing materials, exploring techniques, selecting ideas, composition, colour and tone and associated topics. Drawing skills and interpreting the qualities of light are other key issues that he deals with, while his evocative landscapes, coastal scenes, interiors and figure compositions provide much inspiration. David Curtis is one of the country’s best-known painters, with a number of prestigious art awards. His work is widely exhibited and he is the author of the bestselling Light and Mood in Watercolours. Robin Capon is an experienced author and art journalist, having written several books, including Light and Mood in Watercolour with David Curtis and Abstract and Colour Techniques with Claire Harrigan.

CONWAY MILITARY HISTORY Dig WW2

Jean Hood is a writer and historian. Her most recent title is War Correspondent, the exhibition tie-in currently running at the IWM North, before it moves to the London site in 2012. She is also the author of Carrier (2010) and Submarine (2008), two anthologies of first-hand combat accounts. Her other titles include Marked for Misfortune (2003) and Wreck (2008).

Jean Hood ISBN 9781844861507 | £25 | February | HB 150 photographs | 272 pages | 246 x 189 mm

• Fantastic TV tie-in accompanying the series presented by Dan Snow • Delves into the world of military archaeology presenting a ‘hands on’ history and tracing critical events of the Second World War from what has been left behind • Features all the key ‘digs’ and ‘dives’ from the series and conveys the excitement of uncovering the past • Full ‘Dig WW2’ Twitter and Facebook campaigns Military archaeology is amongst the newest academic disciplines and is also one of the fastest growing. The BBC TV series Dig WW2 will be using this discipline to examine some of the most compelling stories of the Battle of the Atlantic, the Battle of Britain and the Battle for Europe to provide fresh insights and understanding into our dramatic fight for survival. There will be perilous dives onto a tank graveyard and a sunken U-boat; the recovery of a crashed Spitfire from a Northern Irish bog; and an exploration of the tunnels and bunkers on a D-Day beach. Each story has personal testimony from veterans who were there. The series is made by the same team who made Dig 1940 for BBC1, which achieved nearly 5 million viewers for its opening episode. Author Jean Hood looks into all these stories, revealing the scientific breakthroughs, such as DNA profiling that has allowed families to identify loved ones, as well as the dangers inherent in diving to 130 metres and digging in a peat bog, while providing broader discussion on the themes in the programmes within a wider framework of the war in Europe. This is not just a book about the Second World War: it allows us to engage fully in our history. Illustrated with special photography from the series, as well as archival images and artefacts.

Praise for Submarine ‘It is the sheer volume and breadth of information that will appeal both to the naval history buff as well as the genealogist.’ BBC Who Do You Think You Are?

• Official tie-in to the Imperial War Museum’s lead 2012 exhibition • Engaging social history that brings wartime Britain to life • Centres on the experiences of one large London family Family in War provides genuine insight into life on the Home Front between 1939 and 1945. Drawing on the first-hand accounts and archives of the Allpresses, a typical large London family, the book covers key themes of evacuation and conscription, air-raids and rationing, as well as the work of the Women’s Voluntary Service, the transport network, factory work, and public health services during wartime. Morale-boosting campaigns and popular films, entertainers and songs all feature, evoking the spirit of the 1940s. Finally the book examines the often-overlooked aftershocks of war, such as the difficulties for couples reunited after years of separation, the residual effects of female independence, and the lowering of children’s literacy during the period of evacuation.

The British Home Guard Pocket Book 9781844861064 | £7.99 | HB

The book will resonate with modern families, and the Allpress experience is a testament to the strong ties of many British families during those traumatic war years.

Empire of the Seas

All Hands: The Lower Deck of the Royal Navy since 1939

Brian Lavery 9781844861323 | £9.99 | July | PB

Brian Lavery

60 illustrations | 336 pages | 198 x 129 mm

• New edition of the Sunday Times bestseller • Expands on all the themes raised in Dan Snow’s hit BBC2 TV series • A timely reassessment of the Royal Navy’s role in the cultural life of Britain from one of the nation’s leading naval historians • Excellent selection for trade ‘summer reading’ promotions Empire of the Seas tells the story of the Royal Navy’s expansion to become the most complex industrial enterprise on earth; explaining how the need to organise it laid the foundations of the British civil service and economy; and how it transformed our culture, our sense of national identity and our democracy. Re-issued in trade paperback format, Brian Lavery’s acclaimed narrative explores the Navy’s rise over four centuries; propelling Britain to its place as the world’s most powerful nation at the close of the nineteenth century. The book then assesses the key turning point of Jutland and the First World War. A compelling read, Empire of the Seas was described as ‘fascinating, action-packed history’ (Sunday Express) and ‘an excellent book; readable yet informed and underpinned by Brian Lavery’s expertise as one of the best naval historians in Britain, if not the world’ (BBC History). Brian Lavery is one of Britain’s leading naval historians and a prolific author. A Curator Emeritus at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and a renowned expert on the Royal Navy, in 2007 he won the prestigious Desmond Wettern Maritime Media Award. His naval writing was further honoured in 2008 with the Society of Nautical Research’s Anderson Medal. His recent titles include Royal Tars (2010), and Able Seamen (2011).

ISBN 9781844861552 | £25 | May | HB 40 illustrations | 384 pages | 234 x 156 mm

• The final volume in Brian Lavery’s ground-breaking history of the Royal Navy’s lower deck, following Royal Tars and Able Seamen • From the author of the bestselling Empire of the Seas, In Which They Served and the classic volume of the senior service; Nelson’s Navy • Presented in accomplished anecdote-led style based on first-hand accounts, primary documents and a careful examination of naval practice Brian Lavery, perhaps the pre-eminent historian of the Royal Navy, returns with the third volume of his engaging social history of the Royal Navy’s ‘lower deck’ – analysing the world of the seamen as distinct from the officers of the ‘quarterdeck’. He examines the world of the sailor from the outbreak of war in 1939 through more than 70 years of change up to his place in the modern Royal Navy. The author illuminates the inherent adaptability of the professional seaman, as new technologies demanded increased professionalism, specialisation and training. He also focuses on the changing social structure of the Navy, and the periods of expansion as the service coped with great demands made through the outbreak of the Second World War. Finally he examines the modern Navy and how its manpower is trained to deal with a wealth of challenges, including strategic operations, humanitarian crises and hostile situations across the globe.

ISBN 9781844861538 | £7.99 | June | HB

25 illustrations | 128 pages | 180 x 120 mm

• Development, operation and service history of the original Routemaster bus • Charming nostalgia feel in the highly successful Conway Pocket-Book series • Technical specifications, original technical drawings, and engine diagrams

• Compiled from a wealth of authentic period sources, including pilot’s notes and other Air Ministry publications • Supplemented with illustrative plans and diagrams • Gives a unique insight into the wartime operation of this famous aircraft

Nothing encapsulates the essence of London quite like the red double-decker Routemaster bus. Its iconic design, since its 1956 inception, has become as much a symbol of the capital as St Paul’s or Tower Bridge. Immortalised in the classic TV series, On the Buses, the wealth of memorabilia devoted to it across London alone is testament to its status and longevity. Yet from humble, localised origins, its influence has extended across the world, seeing service in Alaska, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The design was revolutionary, drawing largely on the many innovative technological advances brought about by the development of aircraft during the Second World War. Boasting a lightweight, aluminium chassis, independent front suspension, an automatic gearbox, power-hydraulic braking and power-steering, this truly modern machine was like nothing seen before in public transport. Cherished by the public and tourists alike, this book is a delightful celebration of the Routemaster, using authentic material covering its exterior and interior design, technical aspects and operation, and illustrated with diagrams and line drawings throughout. As the ‘new’ Routemaster takes to the road it is a timely reminder of just how great the original was.

The Avro Lancaster was the RAF’s most famous and successful heavy bomber of the Second World War. Used predominantly at night, Lancasters dropped 608,612 tons of bombs in 156,000 sorties in the period 1942-45. Some of these missions were incredibly daring – notably 617 squadron’s ‘dambusters’ raid on the Ruhr valley dams in May 1943. The success of such operations was testament both to the rugged, reliable qualities of this amazing aircraft and the bravery and skill of its pilots, navigators, bombardiers, flight engineers and gunners. They relied on their training and experience, supplemented by various pamphlets and manuals that were produced throughout the war. This fascinating pocket manual collates such period literature to provide a unique guide to this awe-inspiring aircraft. Martin Robson is a distinguished military, naval and maritime historian. He completed his PhD at King’s College London, and is a former Caird Senior Research Fellow at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. He compiled the Spitfire Pocket Manual (2010). Martin currently lectures at the Joint Services Command and Staff College.

Bradshaw’s Railway Handbook Volume I: London and its Environs Volume II: Tours in North and South Wales

CONWAY TRANSPORT HISTORY

George Bradshaw (1801–1853) was an English cartographer, printer and publisher. He is most famous for developing a series of railway timetables and guides. The books became synonymous with its publisher so that, for Victorians and Edwardians a railway timetable was ‘a Bradshaw’. • ‘Hard to put down ... truthful and opinionated, often funny but never predictable ... the finest travelling companion.’ – Michael Portillo on Bradshaw • A superb and wonderfully illustrated guide to Britain’s villages, towns and connecting railways, dating from 1866 • Unavailable for many years and much sought after, this classic guidebook is now faithfully reissued for a new generation Bradshaw’s Railway Handbook was originally published in 1866 under the title Bradshaw’s Handbook for Tourists in Great Britain and Ireland. It appeared in four volumes as a comprehensive handbook for domestic tourists, and includes beautiful steel engravings of English cathedrals, castles and other views along with maps, period advertisements and nostalgic descriptions of English life, all set in charming Victorian typefaces. Conway is proud to announce the reissue of the first two volumes of this series. These rare and much-sought-after tomes are the same books that Michael Portillo carried and referred to throughout his Great British Railway Journeys TV series. Now available to a new generation of readers, they will appeal to railway, steam and transport enthusiasts, local historians, and anyone with an interest in British heritage, the Victorian period, or the nation’s industrial past.

• Poised for publication in time for NME’s 60th birthday • Behind-the-stories that kept readers coming back week after week – the office brawls, the former staff that became household names and the bands who owe their international success to the magazine • An insider’s study of the music and the magazine that rocked generations Since it was founded in 1952, the New Musical Express has played a central part in the British love affair with pop music. Snotty, confrontational, enthusiastic, sarcastic: the NME landing on the doormat every Wednesday was the high point of any music fan’s week, whether they were listening to The Beatles, Bowie or Blur. The Sex Pistols sang about it, Nick Hornby claims he regrets not working for it and a whole host of household names started their career writing for it. This authoritative history, written by former assistant editor, Pat Long, is an insider’s account of the high times and low lives of the world’s most famous, and most influential, music magazine. The fights, the bands, the brawls, the haircuts, the egos and much more. This is the definitive – and first – book about the infamous NME.

• London as you have never, ever seen it before! • A perfect gift for cheeky Londoners on Valentine’s Day • Crude and lewd – Rude London is not for prudes!

• 50 real-life stories that have become pop classics. • Songs from artists including: Joan Baez (Bob Dylan), Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Carly Simon (Warren Beatty), Laura Marling, Chrissie Hynde (Ray Davies), Dolly Parton, Carole King, Courtney Love (Kurt Cobain), Alison Moyet (Vince Clarke), Stevie Nicks, P.J. Harvey (Jeff Buckley), Joni Mitchell (Graham Nash), Rufus Wainwright, Paul McCartney, Lou Reed and Elton John.

Following hot on the hilarious heels of Shit London comes the naughty, but very funny, Rude London. The book is 130 of the funniest, rudest and real photographs of London caught with its proverbial pants down. From hilarious real street signs to real pub names to an assortment of weird, wonderful and rude shop names, as well as unexpected comedy on every street corner. Rude London is a great gift for that special someone who loves the London vibe and pace of life, and is also a perfect leaving present for one of the 23 million people who fly to London for its attractions each year. Not forgetting the 8 million people who live, work and commute to the dirty city every day. Patrick Dalton was born in London. Professionally, he worked at the BBC and later at the London radio station LBC. Unprofessionally, he likes taking photographs of rude things. Patrick is the creator of shitlondon.co.uk.

The Boy in the Song follows up 2010’s The Girl in the Song. It features the real-life stories that inspired some classic pop songs about the male of the species. Filled with songs about unrequited love and a number of other emotions you’ll get to know the boy in the song. There are songs motivated by love and hate, there are tributes and there are biographical tales. Each song is featured on with a small biography of the artist along with the story of how and why the song was written, and, most intriguingly, what happened after the song became a hit. Michael Heatley has contributed to many rock music encyclopedias, including the Virgin Encyclopedia of Rock(1996), and music biographies, including Eminem (2001) and Deep Purple (2007). He has written for magazines including Music Week, Billboard and Record Collector. His most recent titles for Anova include Music That Shook The World (2008), Stars and Guitars (2010) and The Girl in The Song (2010).

• From the same team behind When I Were A Lad... and When I Were A Nipper... • Jam-packed with photos from a time when little girls were made of sugar and spice. Except sugar was rationed so it was more likely to be beetroot. • Includes scary dolls, miserable trips to the seaside and that essential fashion item, the gym knicker

• Uses the best-selling format established for the 100,000 selling When I Were A Lad... • From the same author/photographer combination as When Cats Assassinate, The Thoughts of Chairman Miaow and Gnomes of the Silver Screen • Capitalises on the BIG LOVE for meerkats first generated by the BBC series Meerkat Manor

When I Were A Lass... looks back through rose-tinted NHS spectacles (held together with an old plaster) to a time when the world was a simpler place. A girl’s view of the 1930s, 40s and 50s is revealed through a series of vintage photos. From a time when radio and gramophones were the only distraction and toys were few and far between, a doll was a thing to be treasured and a trip to the seaside was a grand adventure. The book takes a nostalgic and offbeat look at the photos of a distant childhood.

When I Were A Meerkat is an extension of the 100,000 selling Portico title When I Were A Lad... Instead of ragged-trousered children scrabbling around the streets, getting put in perilous positions the north of England is populated with a small number of meerkats. They do their best to escape the grinding poverty and poor schooling to make a better life for themselves. Meerkats get put to work down the mines, go to Blackpool for their holidays and mess about on trams.

Joan Bradshawe grew up in Settle, North Yorkshire. A former Butlin’s Redcoat at the Filey holiday camp, she went on to work in the camp administration office until the site closed in 1983. A keen amateur historian, she spends her leisure time trawling through car boot sales and junkshops on the lookout for vintage photos. She has four children, two grandchildren and this is her first book.

Andrew Davies has written a variety of humour books for Anova including When I Were A Lad... (with sales now in excess of 100,000), When I Were A School Lad (2010) and When I Were A Nipper (2011). He is also the ghost writer for Ivor Grump, in the Grumpy Handbook series and sometimes doubles as Captain William Featherstone-Dawes, author of Those Were The Days: Golf and Football.

So, your government urges you: take this amazing travel guide with you with you when abroad, read it, learn from it and if you happen to meet a foreign traveller on your travels (which will be inevitable) remember what you’ve learnt and, please, please, please be on your best behaviour.

PORTICO HUMOUR The VERY Embarrassing Book of DAD Jokes

Ian Allen

Andrew Davies

9781907554537 | £9.99 | May | HB

9781907554513 | £9.99 | March | HB

Over 15 photographs | 224 pages | 198 x 129 mm

Over 20 illustrations | 160 pages | 198 x 129 mm

• A collection of ‘side-splitting’ dad jokes from around the world • All dads think they are bloody hilarious. This book will appeal to them • 1000+ jokes to tell at parties, weddings, and – knowing your dad – funerals and any other awkward moments he can think of!

• A book to appeal to the ten million shed owners in the UK and two million in Australia • Sheddism is a growing phenomenon. Cuprinol now sponsor the UK “Shed of the Year” competition. In Australia there is a Men’s Shed Association and in 2009 there was a three-day Men and Sheds conference in Hobart attended by 297 delegates. • A humorous miscellany of shed facts, shed humour, shed features, shed design, shed maintenance and more. The Joy of Sheds is a shed miscellany that chronicles man’s need for a small space on his own. It’s a humorous look at every aspect of the shed experience, mixed with shed facts and some practical information too. Many famous people have created in sheds. Inventor Trevor Baylis thought up the clockwork radio in a shed, George Bernard Shaw wrote Pygmalian in one and Dylan Thomas would compose poetry in his. The average UK male does not tend to devote his shed to poetry, though.

Why did the banana go to the doctors? Because he wasn’t peeling very well! Proving the age-old maxim that ‘it’s in the way that you tell them’, Dads – for the best part of forever – have always been renowned for being truly godawful joke tellers. Whether it’s telling them at the wrong moment, misremembering the punchline or it just simply being one of those jokes that were terrible to begin with, Dads are an embarrassment to the whole family when it comes to trying to be funny. The VERY Embarrassing Book of DAD Jokes is full to the brim with jokes that only your dear old Dad would dare say – jokes that will make you groan, sigh … and then probably make you groan again. Ian Allen is a father of three teenagers and a funny man indeed. He has been a freelance editor from Staffordshire – recently voted England’s least amusing county – for the past 15 years and during that time Ian has worked on dozens of joke books, a handful of which were even intended to be comical. Ian is qualified to degree-level in Data Processing, which is also hilarious.

Along with chapters on how to customize your shed into an exotic creation, “ there are “Shed Facts”: almost a fifth of men have had an accident in a shed, it’s the single most dangerous place in the home after the kitchen. Other chapters include “Shed Vision”, on the typical items stored in sheds, and “Shed Experience” pulls in shed stories from around the world, but particularly Australia, and there are also tales of the “Euro-Shed”. Andrew Davies is the author of many bestselling Portico titles including The Grumpy Driver’s Handbook, When I Were A Lad, When I Were A Nipper and Grumpy Moments.

An entertaining, eclectic and serendipitious collection that will delight and surprise in equal measure, England, My England is a real treasure house of pleasing patriotism to savour and share. A former chairman of the Polite Society/Campaign for Courtesy for over 12 years, Gerry Hanson has been a regular TV and radio broadcaster, with appearances on the BBC and LBC Radio. Dubbed by Michael Winner as ‘the rudest man I’ve ever met’ after a heated debate on BBC2’s ‘Newsnight’, Gerry is an authority on Christmas carols and a regular orator and guest speaker of the Queen’s English Society on a number of occasions.

Following on from the bestselling Strangest title London’s Strangest Tales comes Kent’s Strangest Tales – a book devoted to the weird and wonderful side of the home country many people believe is the ‘The Garden of England’. Located on the bottom of the Old Man of England’s bottom, Kent is a county with more strangeness than you can shake a strange stick at. Home to historically-rich towns such as Canterbury, Rochester, Maidstone and, of course, Essex, Kent can lay claim to some very strange goings-on indeed. From Chaucer’s legendary tales of debauchery and naughtiness to Mick and Keith’s very first meeting on a rocking ‘n’ rolling Dartford train. Kent has it all – coast, ghosts, castles, treasures, pirates, Britain’s oldest highway and, lest could we forget, the old ladies who tricked the Luftwaffe. Kent’s Strangest Tales is a treasure trove of the hilarious, the odd and the baffling – an alternative travel guide to some of the county’s best-kept secrets that date back many thousands of years. Read on, if you dare! Dr Martin Latham, 56, has a PhD in history from London University and was a lecturer at Hertfordshire University before becoming a bookseller. He has managed Waterstones bookshop in Canterbury for 21 years, hosting scores of talks about Kent and witnessing ghostly activity in the shop. He is proud of ordering the excavation of the Roman Bath-House floor at his bookshop.
