In Elizabeth’s Sea Dogs Hugh Bicheno turns his attention to a neglected subject to investigate the rise and fall of a unique group of adventurers – men like Francis Drake, John Hawkins, Martin Frobisher and Walter Raleigh. Seen by the English as heroes but by the Spanish as pirates, they were expert seafarers and controversial characters. This riveting new account reveals them for what they were: extremely tough men in extremely hard times. They sailed, fought, looted and whored their way across the globe; in the process, they established a lasting British presence in the Americas, defeated the Spanish Armada, and made Elizabeth I very wealthy, if seldom grateful.

• Compact new paperback edition of the Sunday Times bestseller • Expands on the themes raised in Dan Snow’s hugely popular BBC2 series • A timely reassessment of the Royal Navy’s impact on Britain and its empire

The fourth edition of a new, full-colour annual focusing on all facets of ‘scratch-built’ model shipbuilding, as well as related articles on restoration, archaeology, historical research and marine art. Twenty articles written by a panel of distinguished contributors describe, explain, inform and inspire. Shipwright is an essential volume for any ship modeller or maritime enthusiast.

Empire of the Seas explores the navy’s rise over four centuries from victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588 up to the Battle of Jutland during the First World War. In that time much of Britain’s wealth and power was derived from the oceans. This book tells the story of the navy’s complex expansion, explaining how it laid the foundations of the civil service and the economy, and analysing its enduring impact on our culture, our national identity and our democracy.

John Bowen is the author of several acclaimed titles for Conway and has been at the helm of Shipwright since 1972 when the original quarterly journal Model Shipwright was launched. His editorial experience and depth of knowledge have been key to its ongoing success. Also available

• A fascinating new history of the airship, following the protracted and often fractious development of lighter-than-air technology • Superbly illustrated and featuring a panoply of daredevil characters, whose courage and ingenuity fuelled a succession of ambitious projects • With visceral accounts of triumphant flights and tragic disasters that convey the majesty and danger of these leviathans of the skies Airship charts the history of lighter-than-air craft and examines the construction of the major commercial and military airships of the twentieth century. These include early successes, ill-fated projects such as the twin British behemoths R100 and R101, and tragic losses like the USS Akron and LZ129 Hindenburg – disasters that ultimately heralded the end of large-scale airship production. The book examines the development of German Zeppelins and British efforts to set up an Imperial Airship scheme. It also looks in detail at airship projects initiated by all the major powers, developed for myriad purposes including luxury travel, polar exploration or as aerial aircraft carriers. A result of rigorous historical research, Airship is a new and important work that is simultaneously readable and entertaining.

A Life on the Lines illuminates the world of Britain’s railways during the Age of Steam, seen through the eyes of railwayman Richard Harry Norman Hardy. During much of his early career, from 1944 through to the early 1960s, Richard took hundreds of pictures of life on the railways and the men he worked with, on his Brownie 620 box camera. These unique and largely unpublished images are an evocative reminder of the age of the ‘Big Four’ (particularly the LNER) and of the early days of British Railways. Many pictures capture the railways in wartime, while others feature great personalities such as the poet John Betjeman, providing a nostalgic tribute to Britain’s steam railways.

The Avro Lancaster was the RAF’s most famous heavy bomber of the Second World War. Its success was testament both to the rugged, reliable qualities of this amazing aircraft and the bravery and skill of the pilots, navigators, bombardiers, flight engineers and gunners who crewed it. They relied on their training and experience, supplemented by various pamphlets and manuals that were produced throughout the war. This fascinating pocket manual collates such period literature to provide a unique guide to this awe-inspiring aircraft. Dr Martin Robson is a Lecturer at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham. He is the author of The Spitfire Pocket Manual (2011). Also available

The Commandos were created by Winston Churchill in 1940 as a ‘butcher and bolt’ raiding unit to destroy vital targets in German occupied Europe. Recruits had to be extremely fit and demonstrate initiative and toughness. Training courses were developed to cultivate these qualities and to simulate real battle experiences, which included the use of live ammunition. This pocket-book draws on authentic training manuals, lecture notes, course literature and other material from the Commando schools to give a real insight into unit combat operations as raiding parties and later assault infantry. Sections of the book cover survival and fieldcraft skills; night operations; assaulting obstacles; use of equipment; and weapons training, including the Thompson submachine gun, the Bren gun, and the famous emblem of the commandos – the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife. Christopher Westhorp is an experienced editor, writer and researcher with a special interest in military history and aviation. He is the author of numerous works including VJ Day in Photographs, Spirits in the Sky: Classic Aircraft of World War II and The World’s Armies.
