Broaden your horizons
As a publisher with a reputation for thoughtful, timely and well-researched history books it comes as a bit of a shock to have one of Conway’s lead Autumn titles very much set in the present. Nigel Millard’s The Lifeboat: Courage on our Coasts is a spectacular visual tribute to one of Britain’s most essential and proud maritime organisations. It has been truly thrilling to look on over the last three years as the stunning photographs for this book have emerged from Nigel’s many days out on boats, on shouts, on helicopters or simply photographing those who dedicate their life to fundraising. Huw Lewis-Jones concludes his introduction to The Lifeboat with the observation ‘They are heroes all’. Whilst unquestionably true of the RNLI’s voluntary crewmen, landcrew, lifeguards and fundraisers, it could also apply to many of those featured in more traditional history titles that make up the rest of Conway’s 2013 list. Ranging from Nelson’s ‘band of brothers’ and seamen celebrated
in our National Maritime Museum gallery tie-in Nelson, Navy & Nation (itself written by today’s leading writers on the Georgian navy), to the pioneering explorers, mountaineers and alpinists of Himalaya – those individual heroes who ultimately conquered the famed peaks, including Annapurna, Everest, Nanga Parbat, K2 and Kanchenchunga, of the world’s greatest mountain range. This year we also salute those who served in the First World War, be it the opposing generals and officers, whose annotations you can see right across the fascinating maps reproduced in Mapping the First World War, or those contributors to The Wipers Times, the extraordinary satirical trench newspaper edited by Captain F.J. ‘Fred’ Roberts and Lieutenant J.H. ‘Jack’ Pearson. Such heroic editors are often unsung. Equally, in John Jordan and John Bowen we have two of the very finest, and longest-standing, working on Conway’s two annuals. John Lee, Publisher – Conway

NELSON, NAVY & NATION
The Royal Navy and the British People, 1688-1815 Introduced by N.A. M. Rodger Edited by Quintin Colville and James Davey Britain’s rich naval heritage has long been understood through the life of one man – Admiral Lord Nelson. This book captures the immense interest that he continues to generate as a leader and a symbol of national identity. However, it also places him in a wider context that makes sense of his dazzling celebrity. In doing so, it shows that the story of the Royal Navy is also the story of the fears and ambitions of the British people. Published to accompany a long-term gallery in the National Maritime Museum, entitled ‘Nelson, Navy, Nation’, the book is beautifully illustrated throughout and highlights many key objects from the gallery. It presents contributions from the world’s finest Nelson authorities including Roger Knight, Andrew Lambert, Brian Lavery, Dan Snow, Roland Pietsch and Edward Vallance. HB • 246 x 189 mm • 240 pages • £20.00 250 colour illustrations

From its longrunning cartoon pun (‘Are We Being Offensive Enough?’) to its brilliantly subversive column ‘Things We Want to Know’ (‘Whether certain officers have taken shares in the Hôtel Faucon, and what’s the attraction?’), and its hilarious spoof ads, this complete facsimile edition of The Wipers Times is a historical masterpiece that enables us to sample the real spirit of the trenches . . . from the peacetime comfort and safety of our armchairs.
