A gorgeous reissue of this classic tale, originally published in 1945
This reissue of the 1952 classic Treasure on Earth is a heart-warming Christmas story from a bygone era. Phyllis Sandeman, who was brought up at Lyme, recalls the celebrations, the theatricals, the relationships between family and servants, and her own childhood hopes and fears. Containing hand-drawn illustrations from Phyllis herself, it shows opulent scenes of the house’s architecture, the bustling kitchen during Christmas, as well as sketches of its inhabitants, including the family dog.
Adapted from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the story follows Titania, the Fairy Queen, and Oberon, King of the Fairies, who fall into a quarrel about who should have charge of a little changeling boy. Oberon and his servant, Puck, cast a spell that causes Titania to fall magically in love with a weaver who has been given the head of a donkey. But Oberon sees the error of his ways and seeks a way to reverse the spell and restore harmony. Bringing the magic of Shakespeare to very young children, this tale is wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated throughout. Phyllis Bray was a member of the London Group, and is celebrated for her murals at the People’s Palace in Mile End. She was an integral part of the lost history of one of the major artistic movements to come out of the East End in the last century.
Phyllis Sandeman was the daughter of the second Lord Newton. She wrote Treasure on Earth in 1952. Lyme, Cheshire, where Phyllis was brought up, was acquired by the National Trust in the 1990s.
Jo Manton is also the author of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, The Second Mrs. Hardy and Dorothy Wordsworth.

Every thing You Know about Science is Wrong Matt Brown Batsford | 9781849944021 | £9.99 | February 2017 | HB 50 illustrations | 176 pages | 192 x 136 mm
A highly entertaining, myth-busting read for anyone with an interest in science Hot on the heels of Everything You Know About London is Wrong, this next book in the series, written by author Matt Brown in his trademark humorous style, debunks the scientific myths we all take for granted. Does nothing travel faster than the speed of light? Well, in certain circumstances, a winded tortoise can go faster. Are there actually seven colours in a rainbow? Think again. And our author merrily explains why our hair and nails don’t keep growing after we die and why chemicals in our diet might not be the toxic threats we are led to believe. Covering everything from pseudoscience to phenomena of physics, scandals of space and scientific misquotes, Everything You Know About Science is Wrong shatters a range of illusions we have accepted unquestioningly and demystifies this most puzzling of subjects. Matt Brown has worked as a scientific editor, writer and event host. He served as the Royal Institution’s quizmaster for three years. As well as making contributions to several popular science books, Matt has written extensively about London and is the author of London Night and Day and Everything You Know About London is Wrong. He remains Editor-at-Large of Londonist.com.

A new version of the classic fairy tale set in the 1950s and the 2950s
The story of a boy, a grandmother, a big bad wolf, and a keg of fizzy ginger beer
In a time not too long ago there lived a beautiful young girl called Annabel. Annabel loved science fiction and spent hours dreaming of what the future would be like. However, little did she know that she was living under an evil spell that could mean she had no future at all.
Young Thomas is known as Little Red. He lives with his parents in a cosy inn, famous for its sweet and fizzy ginger beer. Every week, Little Red visits his grandmother with food and a keg of the ginger drink. But on this visit, Grandma doesn’t quite look herself. Can Little Red save Grandma, and himself, from the big bad wolf? Set in the late 18th century – a time of big wigs, satin gowns, and wicked highwaymen – this is a beautifully and imaginatively retold fairy tale.
So begins the story of Sleeping Beauty, a girl cursed by an evil witch. Young Annabel lives in the 1950s and dreams of a future with jetpacks, flying cars and robots. When the curse is fulfilled on her 16th birthday, she falls asleep for 1000 years. In the future, a young explorer called Zoe discovers Annabel’s story. Will she be in time to save Annabel and show her the future for real?
