JAGUAR THE CARS THAT MADE THE MARQUE

Colin Salter Collins & Brown | 9781911216070 | £30.00 | November 2016 HB | Colour photographs throughout | 240 pages | 330 x 255 mm

A beautifully photographed guide to the best and most iconic Jaguars of the last 80 years Featuring specially commissioned photography, this comprehensive book is arranged in chronological order, starting with Sir William Lyons’ nascent marque of the 1930s. It was only after the war, when the work of aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer created the beautiful curves of the XK120, that the company became a world beater. The D-type brought the company sporting success at Le Mans, leading to a car that became emblematic of London in the Swinging Sixties: the E-type Jaguar. Production increased in the 1960s with the Mark I and Mark II saloons, latterly adopted by Inspector Morse. In recent years the company has gone on to release more much-admired premium sportscars and prestige saloons. This book offers a lavishly illustrated guide to these objects of desire, right up to the 2016 models. Colin Salter has written several books on engineering and science, including Men on the Moon: A History of Space Exploration and Everything You Need to Know About Inventions. In putting together this, his first history of the Jaguar marque, he has been assisted by Paul Walton, editor of Jaguar World magazine.

A new edition of Margery Fish’s classic work on creating a cottage garden

A new edition of a classic book on flowers for the British cottage garden

First published in 1956, We Made a Garden has been hailed as everything from a blueprint for the creation of a modern cottage garden to a feminist manifesto. It tells the story of how Margery Fish, the leading gardener of the 1960s, and her husband transformed an acre of wilderness into a stunning cottage garden. In this timeless work, Fish recounts the trails and tribulations of her venture with ease and humour. Her good sense, practical knowledge and imaginative ideas will encourage and inspire gardeners everywhere.

In this classic gardening book from the 1960s, Margery Fish guides the reader through techniques for creating and maintaining a cottage garden. In her imaginative adaptation of the traditional cottage garden style that was then in decline, Fish brought together oldfashioned and contemporary plants – a style that is still on trend today. Featured are plants that grow easily and naturally in British soil, including adaptable bulbs, perennials and shrubs. No longer in danger of being forgotten, these traditional flowering plants have reestablished their place at the heart of garden design.

Margery Fish was one of Britain’s leading gardeners. She was a regular contributor to Amateur Gardening and The Field, and wrote several gardening books. Thousands of visitors come to her Somerset garden, East Lambrook Manor, which is maintained as it was during her lifetime.

EVERY THING YOU KNOW ABOUT LONDON IS WRONG Matt Brown Batsford | 9781849943604 | £9.99 | July 2016 | HB 50 illustrations | 160 pages | 192 x 136 mm

The first in a new series of highly entertaining myth-busting books A book that takes the reader on a great ride through London’s history, exploding a range of myths from the ridiculously short distances between some London tube stations to the lamp on Carting (or ‘Farting’) Lane that runs on gas from the city’s sewers. Think that the tower that holds Big Ben is called St Stephen’s Tower? Wrong – it was called the Clock Tower until 2012, when it was renamed the Elizabeth Tower. Think that the Union Flag flying over Buckingham Palace means the Queen is home? Wrong – it means that she’s elsewhere, doing other Queenish things. Myths regarding London’s arts, entertainment, food, kings and queens, traditions and politics are all covered, giving a fascinating insight into the true capital. Matt Brown is probably the most London-obsessed person in the world, reaching parts of the capital others can’t reach, while mixing up slogans from beer commercials. In the cause of exploring London, he has waded along the buried River Fleet, spent the night in a haunted plague pit, caught a lung infection by climbing Soho’s tallest steeple, and walked along the tracks beneath Leicester Square at 2am.

By the award-winning author of The Journey Home

A new board book version of this popular picture book

A group of children find a sloth snoring away in a tree in their garden. Not knowing what it is, they set off to find out. While the two older children dream up increasingly outrageous possibilities, from an astronaut to a pirate, the youngest little girl investigates books and a globe and discovers what it really is and where it lives. But how can the children help the sloth to get home if it won’t wake up?

Everyone knows that once a lemur takes a fancy to you there is not much that can be done about it. While being followed by lemurs one day, a boy tries hiding up a tree (without luck), disguising himself (without success) and even tries to sail off in a boat to get away from them – only to discover the lemurs snorkelling behind him. Finally he thinks that he has lost them. Or has he...? Frann Preston-Gannon is a London-based illustrator who graduated from Kingston University in 2010. In 2011 she was the UK’s first recipient of a Sendak Fellowship and spent a month in residence working with the great Maurice Sendak.
