history & heritage books 2017 We are delighted to announce that Pitkin is now part of the award-winning publisher Pavilion Books. This new partnership will mean that we can publish books across a wider range of areas, including books for children. We have an array of new titles to offer you for the 2017 season, as well as our popular backlist titles and new editions. We hope that you enjoy them. Commemorate the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death with our brand-new title, Jane Austen: Inside Her Novels. Jane’s distinction of being one of the country’s most popular novelists means our new publication is much-anticipated: it is written from an alternative angle to our existing books on Jane, and features a never-beforepublished portrait of her. Delve into the fascinating world of Alan Turing with our new book, The Life of a Genius. Authoritatively written by Turing’s nephew, Sir Dermot Turing, it looks at Alan’s codebreaking, computer and biology work – and reveals that he was also an Olympic-standard athlete! With the upcoming society wedding of Pippa Middleton, all our royalist readers can indulge themselves with the updated edition of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. And don’t forget the continuation of our other series: Victorian Secrets & Scandals and Animals in the Second World War. The teams at Pitkin and Pavilion hope you enjoy our books and we look forward to working with you in 2017.

EVACUEES of the Second World War
pitkin
Jane austen was born in the late 18th century during the reign of king George iii. Despite being a woman, and considered inferior, she had a flair for satire, possessed a keen wit, and wrote perceptively on the society and traditions of her time. She had six of her main novels published and they remain as popular as ever.the year 2017 marks the 200th anniversary of Jane’s death, and to honour her legacy we present our new title, Inside Her Novels.

Royal Navy SubmaRiNe muSeum A striking symbol of submarine history, HMS Alliance served the Royal Navy for over 28 years and stands as a memorial to the 5,300 British submariners who have lost their lives in service. Ó The crew of HMS Alliance.
Launched in 1945, Alliance was one of 14 A-class longrange submarines built for service in the Far East. In 1958 she was modified for Cold War duties. Her low conning tower and anti-aircraft guns were replaced with a fin that completely covered her periscopes making her faster and quieter.
The torpedo tubes were sometimes used for keeping the crew’s beer cold!
Home to 65 officers and men, the guided tour offers a taste of their lives at sea. Visitors see their cramped accommodation and control room spaces, before squeezing past the galley to the aft torpedo compartment. Portsmouth Harbour can even be viewed through working periscopes.
The densely packed control room of HMS Alliance, with the periscope in the foreground and the chart table behind.

HMS Alliance forms the centrepiece of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, along with Holland I (Britain’s first submarine) and X24 (the only surviving British midget submarine from the Second World War). The museum’s unique collection also contains thousands of photographs, ship plans and artefacts telling the story of the submarine service. ro yal Navy sub mar iNe m useum
