EDITOR’S LETTER Social media has breached the walls of cyberspace and created a language that crosses into all mediums. Hashtags have become so much more than just a simple pound sign; they have evolved into a connection of easily accessed information. Unfortunately like a lot of things in the American society, things are taken to an extreme and therefore become excessive. The name of the brand is “Hashtag-Hashtag” and it is a brand that works as a social media satire and the culture of hashtags. In a sense, hashtags have become their very own language that people overuse for organizational purposes but also descriptive aids. Through a series of experiments, I have learned a great deal about a person’s mentality when they consider what they choose to share. In general, people to their identity which allows for a sort of social experiment that gives insight into the modern age and the population that creates it. Hashtags act as a powerful vessel in which people can communicate and simplify their own perspective of who they want to be perceived which molds their virtual identity. Which can result in general language hashtags. Hashtag-Hashtag magazine is a publication that puts the purpose back into hashtags. The magazine discuses important real world topics and puts emphasis on the key words. The user can participate in the story by using the hashtags provided, working to take back the hashtag.

CHINA TAKES ON BIG RISKS IN ITS PUSH FOR SHALE GAS KEITH BRADSHER

JIAOSHIZHEN, China — Residents of this isolated mountain valley of terraced cornfields were just going to sleep last April when they were jolted by an enormous roar, followed by a tower of flames. A shock wave rolled across the valley, rattling windows in farmhouses and village shops, and a mysterious, pungent gas swiftly

“It was so scary — everyone who had a car fled the village and the rest of us without cars just stayed and waited to die,” said Zhang Mengsu, a hardware store owner. All too quickly, residents realized the source of the midnight fireball: a shale gas drilling rig in their tiny rural hamlet. This verdant valley represents the latest frontier in the worldwide hunt for shale gas retrievable by the technology of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. It is a drilling boom that has upended the energy industry and spurred billions of dollars of investment. Like the United States and Europe, China wants to wean itself from its dependence on energy imports — and in Jiaoshizhen, the Chinese energy giant Sinopec says it has made the country’s first commercially viable shale gas discovery. Its efforts could also help address another urgent issue, as Beijing looks to curb an overwhelming reliance on coal that has blackened skies and made China the largest contributor to global warming.

Climate Efforts Falling Short, U.N. Panel Says JUSTIN GILLIS

BERLIN — Delivering the latest stark news about climate change on Sunday, a United Nations panel warned that governments are not doing enough to avert profound risks in coming decades. But the experts found a silver lining: Not only is there still time to head off the worst, but the political will to do so seems to be rising

In a report unveiled here, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that decades of foot-dragging by political leaders had propelled humanity into a situation, with greenhouse emissions rising faster than ever. Though it remains technically possible to keep planetary warming to a tolerable level, only an intensive push over the next 15 years to bring those emissions under control can achieve the goal, the committee found. “We cannot afford to lose another decade,” said Ottmar Edenhofer, a German economist and co-chairman of the committee that wrote the report. “If we lose another decade, it becomes extremely costly to achieve climate stabilization.” The good news is that ambitious action is becoming more affordable, the committee found. It is increasingly clear that measures like tougher building codes and efficiency standards for cars and trucks can save energy and reduce emissions without harming people’s quality of life, the panel found. And the costs of renewable energy like wind and solar power are falling so fast that its deployment on a large scale is becoming practical, the report said.

Ukraine Forces Storm a Town, Defying Russia ANDREW E. KRAMER AND ANDREW HIGGINS

SLOVYANSK, Ukraine — The Ukrainian government on Sunday for the first time sent its security services to confront armed pro-Russian militants in the country’s east, defying warnings from Russia. Commandos engaged in gunfights with men who had set up roadblocks and stormed a Ukrainian police station in Slovyansk, and at least one officer was killed, Ukrainian officials said.

Russian news media and residents here disputed that account, saying the Ukrainian forces had only briefly engaged one checkpoint. In either case, the central government in Kiev has turned to force to try to restore its authority in the east, a course of action that the Russian government has repeatedly warned against With tens of thousands of Russian troops massed along Ukraine’s eastern border near Donetsk, Western leaders have worried that Moscow might use unrest in Ukraine’s mainly Russian--speaking areas as a pretext for an invasion. Both governments intensified their statements on Sunday. Ukraine’s interim president, Oleksandr V. Turchynov, issued another ultimatum, saying separatists should vacate occupied buildings by Monday or face a “large-scale antiterrorist operation” that would include the Ukrainian military.. And Russia claimed that the Ukrainian government was cracking down at the behest of American and European officials.

Several officers were injured in the operation, as were four locals, the officials said.
