This was the big moment for me, when I realized human life had changed for good, that technology had leaked into my soul and corrupted my view of nature, and that I could no longer blame everything on Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch.

I was out in L.A. with friends hiking through Rustic Canyon on a Saturday morning. We were high in the hills, looking for this legendary house we'd heard Murdoch or some other gazillionaire had built by razing the top of a mountain until it was as at as a helipad. Views for miles. This is how you get exercise in L.A. You go hunting for the vistas of celebrities you despise.

It was a stunning day and a steep climb, and soon we forgot about Casa Murdoch. Nature was all around us, rolled out like a carpet, a coquettish sun peeking out of the clouds. We climbed up a ridge that suddenly afforded an unguarded view of all of Santa Monica. And there they were: views for miles. That's when the sun broke out in a single ecstatic jolt, and the four of us stood there and stared out at the Pacific Ocean in complete and utter awe."Oh man, I wish I had my iPhone with me so I could experience this!"

Ha I said it as a comic bleat, a sort of soft, sarcastic belching of the soul. It's true: I'd left Siri in the car. (She'd been acting up.) And I was kidding! I didn't need to take photos or slightly improve the Pacific Ocean by way of Hipstamatic. I was with my best friends, soaking up the moment, existing in the general vicinity of now. But I sure missed my phone.

I kept thinking back to that moment all summer, the joke that was not a joke, as I noticed more and more New Yorkers, myself included, walking to work while holding our iPhones in front of us, the way you might clutch an alien scanner on an unfriendly planet. When the iPhone first came out, you could trust that if you saw someone squinting into his gadget while walking, he was a disoriented tourist, GPS'ing his way to the nearest Quiznos. But now we were all reading Gawker and Facebook and "Paul Ryan's Top Ten Workout Fantasies" and feeling remarkably well-informed by the time we got to Seventh Avenue.

Some mornings I'll look up from my own self-captivating device and spot them coming down the block, my clumsy peeps. They walk carefully, one step at a time, like unsteady waiters burdened by goblets, and their eyes are amazing: They dart, take in data alerts from the street, and yet never fully leave the screen.

The other day I saw one of 'em almost get bus-crushed in the middle of 23rd Street, but the guy kept going, never skipping a page view.

Strange, too, because I had just been reading City Boy, Edmund White's pretty fantastic memoir of living in New York as a writer, scholar, thinker, and horny gay dude in the 1960s and '70s. He actually felt the historical need to describe how men met each other on the street back then, using the ancient art of cruising.

(It involved a lot of looking back at guys you liked and seeing if they stopped at windows. "You'd pretend to scan the contents of a shop window. He'd do the same thing twenty yards down. You'd keep exchanging reciprocated glances at an ever-increasing rate.") It sounded complicated, the days when you were required to look at people in order to have sex with them. No wonder Steve Jobs invented anonymous sex and the whole app system for finding it.

he coming year plays out like the Katy Perry song: It's a cosmic growth hormone, and we're adolescents morphing into the new people we're going to be.

This growth spurt for humankind bonds us together like a high school class, all going through it together. The changes may be small, but there are so many of them that, by this time next year, some of us will be unrecognizable from the people we are right now!

It starts right at the top of the year. There's a heavenly Happy New Year card in the form of the Quadrantids meteor shower the first week of January, ushering in the truly unusual 12 months to come. For starters, it's extremely rare to have four solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses in the span of a single year. This is the first time it will happen this century, and it will only occur five more times in the next 100 years.

The solar eclipses will be like exams; the lunar eclipses, like homecoming games. In both cases, circumstances will call for us to put ourselves on the line, show what we know, push our skills to the limit and take full responsibility for the results. It will be like this for everyone ... but if the eclipse happens in your sign, you'll feel the effects even more acutely.

Jupiter continues the theme of rapid-fire change when it spends time in three different signs this year: Pisces, Aries and Taurus. Jupiter usually spends about 13 months in a given sign, but this year it's on a mission to make its presence felt in a bigger way, touching many areas of life.

This planet of luck, abundance and augmentation will be in Pisces, the sign of spirit, until January 23, at which point it will move into Aries, the realm of the warrior. On June 5, Jupiter explores Taurus, where it will invigorate our financial picture for the rest of the year.

On March 12, rebellious Uranus marches from Pisces into Aries. This will speed up the action and raise the stakes on a personal and global level.

Astrology  is  not  a  modern  invention  dating  back  only  a  few  years,  decades  or  even  centuries.  Astrology  has  been  studied  for  millennia,  and  it  dates  back  as  far  as  recorded  history.  The  original  astrolo-­� gers  were  priests  and  scholars,  aWnd  they  were  looked  up  to  as  doctors  and  learned  men.  According  to  modern  specula-­� tion,  the  Three  Wise  Men  of  Christian  belief  were  astrolo-­� gers!  At  that  time,  astrol-­� ogy  was  the  same  science  as  astronomy  and  psychology,  whose  modern  descendants  arose  from  astrology.  In  ancient  times,  the  Greeks  and  Romans  based  their  system  of  gods  on  what  they  believed  was  up  in  the  sky.  Zeus,  who  equates  to  Jupiter  in  Roman  myth,  and  the  other  gods  and  goddesses  were  based  on  the  planets  visible  to  the  ancients.  Astrology  was  similarly  popu-­� lar  in  Babylon  and  Egypt,  and  it  also  rose  in  the  Middle  East,  India  and  China.
