Carnival and Cricket are two of the best events to experience the rich culture of this twin island nation. During these two festivities, all social, economic and cultural barriers are erased as the entire country comes together to celebrate. This year's celebration was unique, as Carnival and Cricket festivities dovetailed, extending and intensifying the partying and cultural appeal of the destination.

It was a Carnival like atmosphere, with calypso music and dancers, as A & B's tourism product was highlighted at the 20th Annual World Travel Awards Caribbean & North America Gala. The event was hosted by the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority and Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa. Described as the "Oscars" of the Travel Industry, the Award ceremony celebrates companies, organizations and brands that push the boundaries of industry excellence in product and service.

Antigua & Barbuda was in "The Winners Circle" and captured the prestigious Award of "Caribbean's Leading Honeymoon Destination."

Among the local A & B winners: Hermitage Bay Resort captured the

Caribbean's leading Boutique Hotel Award.

Curtain Bluff Resort captured the Award for the Caribbean's Greenest Hotel and Best Spa Resort Nearly 400 top hospitality industry insiders were in attendance at the Gala that featured a local and international line-up of stars, from co-hosts Walt Wiley and Samoya Kirby, to legendary band A & B Band The Burning Flames, as well as dance group Passion de Dance.

Antigua's Carnival, the Caribbean's Most Colorful Summer Festival is a "once in a lifetime" party experience that should be on any traveler's "bucket list." Here is some advice on how to make your/your client's Carnival celebration fun, safe, and healthy.

1. PLAN EARLY: Hotel and air travel should be booked as far in advance as possible to ensure availability and best pricing. To "play" mas with a Carnival "band," costumes must also be booked well in advance, usually in January.

2. START YOUR WORK OUT REGIMEN: Carnival veterans hit the gym well in advance so they look fabulous in their costumes. There are practical considerations, too: Carnival calls for two days and nights of dancing, fetes and concerts. So you need to build up your strength and stamina!

3. STAY CLOSE OR ACCESSIBLE TO THE CARNIVAL ACTION: Everyone converges in one location for Carnival and you can get stuck in traffic. Book a hotel as close to the parade route as possible.

4. GET TICKETS EARLY: Popular Carnival events like Antigua's Soca Monarch and Panorama concerts sell out early. Tourists also can join in private parties, such as the popular Breakfast Fete on the beach on Carnival Sunday. Your hotel concierge can help you get tickets.

5. SHOP FOR SUPPLIES IN ADVANCE: Carnival Monday and Tuesday are public holidays. Many stores, restaurants and attractions close during Carnival, so make sure you stock up on supplies like batteries, disposable cameras, pharmaceuticals, etc.

6. COME PREPARED: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring lots of water, especially if you are planning to drink alcohol. Sunblock is a must, especially considering the skimpy costumes you'll likely be wearing under the blazing sun.

7. DRINK RESPONSIBLY: Watch your alcohol consumption and use of other mind-altering substances. It's devilishly easy to lose track of how much you are drinking. Dehydration is a real risk under the hot Caribbean sun and toilets are few and far between.

8. PACE YOURSELF: Carnival means lots of latenight concerts and partying, including a middle-ofthe-night road march for J'Ouvert followed by more parading on Carnival Monday. Don't count on getting too much sleep back in your hotel unless you bring earplugs. Follow the locals' lead and build in some down time at the beach.

9. PRACTICE SAFE SEX: Hooking up is definitely a big part of the Carnival celebration, and all the drinking certainly does nothing to discourage casual flings with strangers.

Carnival survival kits supplied by bands often include condoms. Use them.

10. TAKE SECURITY SERIOUSLY: Don't wander off alone or drunk from the parade route.

Leave fancy jewelry home, and carry only enough "road money" needed to buy drinks or food. Marching with an established Carnival "band" like Myst has the added benefit of an extensive security staff. Follow their directions closely at all times.

TIPS

1. Don't wear your full Carnival costume on Monday. Save it for Judging of the Bands on Tuesday.

2. "Whinin'" is the booty-bumping dance of Carnival. Don't be surprised if you are the recipient of a sudden, grinding experience. Take it in the spirit intended and you will feel the vibe.

3. Most bands provide breakfast on the morning of Carnival, typically including traditional fungee and saltfish, Antigua's national dish. Fill up on the tasty local delicacies that are excellent absorption food ahead of a day of drinking.

4. Carnival costumes -- especially those for women -- don't usually have pockets. Bring a small fanny pack to carry your road supplies.

Raynell Carroll is crowned Queen of Carnival and is the reigning Ms. Antigua. She a student at the Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute and will likely embark on a budding career in Hospitality.

Ranee Laronde was crowned Queen of Carnival. Ranee is employed at Jolly Beach Resort and Spa as an entertainment coordinator. As part of the dynamic entertainment team, Ranee uses her title and talents to warm the hearts of many guests.

Ruth Horsford was crowned Queen of Carnival. Ruth currently works at Nonsuch Bay and has a seasoned career in Hospitality having been previously employed at Sandals and other hotels in Antigua.

Jazelle Kelsick was crowned Queen of Carnival. Jazelle currently oversees the operations at the VIP Lounge at VC Bird International Airport welcoming many Heads of State, Diplomats and celebrities to the beautiful shores of Antigua and Barbuda.

We talked to a few former title holders who are currently employed in tourism to get their perspective on how they have leveraged their titles and stage presence as stewards of hospitality in A & B.

1. What year were you crowned Queen of Carnival? 1981 2. Where were you employed at the time when you were crowned? Government of Antigua and Barbuda - Office of Elections 3. How long have you been employed in the hospitality industry and has this been a longstanding career goal or aspiration? I started in October of 1983 in St. Croix USVI at the Grapetree Beach Resort now Divi Carina Beach and Casino.. So this is my thirtieth year!!!! Coming from a family of hospitality professionals this was definitely an aspiration that led to my career of choice.

4. Tell us about some of the most memorable experiences during your reign as Queen of Carnival and how has this prepared you for the tourism industry? I do believe that the most memorable experiences were the ones where I travelled as QOC (Miss Antigua) 1981 to St. Kitts for their Carnival celebrations together with all the other contestants from the show and some committee members and my prized trip to Canada the same year.

On both occasions, I was afforded the opportunity to represent Antigua &Barbuda and saw myself not only as a representative of Sun, Sea and Sand but also as a representative of the newest Nation in the world.

5. What have been some of the most rewarding aspects of your career in hospitality? Some of my most rewarding aspects are : a: The fact that I have contributed in showcasing my country to tourists that keep returning each year. b: Knowing that I have contributed to molding young individual's fresh out of high school into industry professionals. c: The long lasting friendship formed with both co-workers and tourist s alike.

6. How can current and future Queens of Carnival leverage their titles as stewards of hospitality? The fact that you are a title holder; this makes you a role model and an ambassador so Represent! Represent!

Represent! Know your country, be knowledgeable and confident in representing and seek every opportunity to showcase your country and its uniqueness.

2. Where were you employed at the time when you were crowned? I was employed at LIAT 1974 Ltd. 3. How long have you been employed in the hospitality industry and has this been a longstanding career goal or aspiration? I have been employed in the hospitality industry for forty plus years which is a statement of my love, passion and commitment for the industry.

4. Tell us about some of the most memorable experiences during your reign as Queen of Carnival and how has this prepared you for the tourism industry? Besides the fact that I got married, one of my most memorable experiences was my prize trip to Toronto and the warm and loving reception I received. This gave a me such a wonderful feeling which made me want to bestow that same love and reception onto others. This acted as a stepping stone toward my career in hospitality.

5. What have been some of the most rewarding aspects of your career in hospitality? Some of the most rewarding aspects of my career in hospitality is the opportunity to meet and serve heads of Governments, Diplomats, Judges, Government officials and even celebrities. Meeting these people really gives me the opportunity to showcase Antigua's hospitality.

6. How can current and future Queens of Carnival leverage their titles as stewards of hospitality? Current and future Queens of Carnival can leverage their titles as stewards of hospitality by being good ambassadors for their country and being a good role model for our children.

The atmosphere at the 2012 Sports Fishing Tournament was one of "good natured familyorientated fun" with lots of sporting action at sea and on land. We weren't just there taking pictures!

We were part of the excitement with our groovy Caribbean-styled Grab n Go Food Stall. The stall decorated with palm leaves and an exhibition of recipes from the "tablemanners" cookbook and guide also had its own mascot boat painted with the Antgua Barbuda flag.

Indigo Bar at Carlisle Bay is an open-sided bar beside the beach with simple rattan chairs and sofas where guests gather at any hour for cocktails, fruit punches and drinks. The Coconut Grove, which is located next door, is a pretty swathe of shaded sand behind the main beach where chairs and loungers offer couples a quiet place to hang out with a drink.

In the Caribbeans the Roti is used to wrap either beef, chicken or shrimp curry! The Roti King's Rotis were juicy and tasty, full of spices and very satisfying. I only wish I could have tried all three flavors and not just the chicken. But if I did, I would have to change my name to The Fat Giraffe!!! If you find yourself in St. John, Antigua and if you want something other than the touristy restaurants, go and try this local fare out. You will not be disappointed!

Dance travel is growing in popularity and requires flexibility of mind, since dance can instantly connect visitors with the local culture. Differences between people on a dance floor or on the streets during Antigua's Carnival are bridged without need of common language. Similarities are quickly brought into the spotlight. Expressing one's self and cooperating together in celebration through dance is an enormously fulfilling experience. Dancing helps visitors meet people in their happiest moments, learn about customs, cultural rites of passage, celebrations and history.

The memories you take with you from these experiences will far outlast any trinkets you take home in your suitcase. . Here is a great example of how visitors connect with the culture through Dance.

Antigua's carnival, dubbed the Caribbean's greatest summer festival, got an unexpected marketing boost after a soca-loving British couple posted a music video on Youtube. com, which has since gone viral.

In the near four-minute video, 45-year-old, caucasian Iain Vale, sings about his clumsy dancing ability; while his partner 50-yearold Sian Jackson, "tick tocked" and "pushed back" in her two piece Carnival costume with the Antigua & Barbuda flag in hand.

To date the video, titled Don't Let Me Wine Like a White Man, has over xx, 000 views and xx comments from the region and the UK, among other countries.

Although their song doesn't meet the criteria for Road March, based on its popularity, dozemany locals hope it is a contender for the title and they hope to see the couple perform the song for Carnival.

ANTIGUA CARNIVAL 2013 DONT LET ME WINE LIKE A WHITE MAN (Antigua Soca 2013)

Click Here - British couple Iain Vale and Sian Jackson posted a music video on Youtube.com, pleading with locals to let them join a band and teach them how to wine.

In an exclusive interview with local media, the couple said they were not expecting such "exciting" feedback.

"I really only expected a couple of people to watch it and say "yeah there's a band you could join". That's all we wanted. We sent a link to the Antigua carnival committee and from then, it went crazy. As I'm talking to you emails are dropping in," Vale said.

Those emails, Vale said, contained invitations to parties and other offers with various bands during Carnival here.

"People are asking us "can you cut a CD?"I don't know how to do that. We just want a band and to be in a section and be part of the action," the UK resident said.

Speaking of the inspiration behind the song in which he pleads for dancing lessons, Vale said he wanted to do something funny, catchy and which "was honest." Vale, a car mechanic, said he has no prior experience making music.

The couple, who has two children ages 22 and 25, said nothing gives them the thrill that Carnival does. Having gone to their first Carnival in St Lucia in 2010, they said they haven't missed one since.

Upon their arrival for Antigua's Carnival, the couple were welcomed by tourism officials. They reckon this would be their best Carnival yet.

Dance Travel is a growing trend that connects visitors with the local culture through dance and music. Tell us about an experience where you or a client connected with the locals through music and/or dance.

Answer of the Month Having attended two destination weddings, one in Antigua and the other in Jamaica, I highly recommend this format for couples who want an exotic experience and have guests that love to travel. Both were seaside weddings and the views, aromas and sounds of the ocean helped to create the ultimate setting for romance. I also enjoyed the way the local culture was infused in the wedding theme. For example, steel drum music was used throughout the ceremony and reception, and in Antigua, we received bottles of Susie's Hot Sauce as wedding favors. This really added a nice touch, allowing us to bring back a "taste of the island" and some wonderful memories with us.
