Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association Holds 75th Conference

Kim Douglass Awarded Auctioneer Of The Year Honors

This year marked 75 years for the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA). From Jan. 10 to 13, the group held its annual Conference and Trade Show. The PAA is one of the largest auctioneer associations in the country, meeting once a year in Harrisburg, with local chapters meeting multiple times a year, to host educational seminars, an auctioneer competition, advertising and marketing contest, and a fun auction. The PAA is dedicated to making the auction industry stronger. The membership of the PAA is made up of auctioneers, trade members and other auction professionals who are passionate about the auction industry and the auction method of selling.

Focusing on educating the auction professional, the PAA provides continuing education points to the many auctioneers who maintain advanced auctioneer certifications or auctioneer licenses held in other states that require ongoing education. The educational events allow the attendees to better serve their buyers, sellers and the industry as a whole. Over 200 auction professionals were in attendance, including auctioneers, apprentices, auction students, support personnel, vendors and presenters.

There were 18 presenters from around the country offering a wealth of information. Some of the presenters this year were from the PAA membership, including past Auctioneer Competition champions Matt Hostetter, J. Meryl Stoltzfus, and John Stauffer, who led a “Bid Calling Workshop,” where auctioneers could bid call and get some pointers. Virginia auctioneer Josh Barfield spoke about decoys and oyster cans; Ken Byler of Higher Ground Consulting Group LLC of Souderton,

Pa., spoke of managing time and the power of listening. Members Mike Calvert and Mike Keller led a roundtable discussion about digital marketing, and Bob Dann spoke on marketing and selling real estate online. The association’s own legal counsel, attorney Anthony Cox Jr., discussed and answered questions during a session on various current happenings affecting the auction industry. Lancaster County attorneys Patrick Deibler and Sam Goodley spoke on the importance of utilizing an attorney when selling real estate at auction. The group heard from the PAA’s Governmental Affairs consultants David Feidt and Jessica Kemmerer of McNees Strategic Solutions Group several times throughout the event, learning about current legislation and how it affects the industry as well as the importance and reason

Short on days but long on romance, the month of February is always associated with hearts, flowers, and Valentine’s Day. At the Haddon Heights Antiques Center, finding a vintage Valentine decoration or a lovely and thoughtful vintage gift is easy. And shoppers will find lots of inspiration in the artistically arranged special sales display, a themed monthly display of special items on sale.

This month, hearts, flowers, and vintage Valentine cards will be interspersed among pink and red glass and china. Beautiful jewelry, antique perfume bottles, and romantic prints can also be found in the display and throughout the store.

Winter is a wonderful time to go antique shopping, and the Haddon Heights Antiques Center makes it easy. This multi-dealer, two-story shop is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Friday. It is conveniently located near major highways I-295 and the White Horse Pike.

For GPS purposes, use 531 Clements Bridge Road, Barrington, N.J., or call 856-546-0555 for directions and more information.

The Antiques at the Barn PopUp Show is returning and will be a one-day outdoor antiques show on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Twelve quality antiques dealers will be set up under tents on the grounds of the Brickerville Antiques Barn, located at 2 E. 28th Division Highway, Lititz, Pa. (the intersection of routes 501 and 322 behind the Brickerville Family Restaurant). The event will be held rain or shine.

The public is invited to check out this fun and free outdoor pop-up antiques show, stay for lunch at the Brickerville Family Restaurant, grab some ice cream at the adjacent ice cream shop, and stroll through the other specialty stores and the multi-dealer antiques shop.

For further information, call the Brickerville Antiques Barn during regular business hours at 717-626-0786.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics

I often enjoy sharing my opinions about various forms of media devoted to the antiques and collectibles trade. With the rise in popularity of antiques and collectibles as an alternate asset class, along with the adoption of online streaming services, there are several documentaries geared toward specific segments of the trade. During the pandemic, one documentary that caught my eye on Netflix and was

“Made You Look: A True Story

About Fake Art.” The documentary should be required viewing for anyone attempting to invest in not only art, but also any kind of antique or collectible. For the uninitiated, investment grade art is one of the most sophisticated markets in the entire antiques and collectibles trade. It is far more sophisticated than coins, which, while sophisticated in their own right, at least have

the benefit of established third-party grading. Even antique furniture, glass, and firearms don’t rank as high as art does when it comes to the level of knowledge required to assess priceless works that can be seen selling for millions of dollars. I have repeated this same mantra many times. Art is a market that is quite fickle in nature and also one that is easy for a novice to get taken advantage of. Even experts get it wrong. There is a reason as to why so many top tier art dealers, galleries, and auction houses in the art market are so well respected. That said, sometimes the lure of easy money can mean more than ethics and integrity. We have seen similar stories play out throughout the entire antiques and collectibles trade. The Tiffany vase that may have been repaired without being disclosed, the antique sports card that may have been trimmed down to make it appear better than it really is, or even the vintage action figure whose included accessory is an undisclosed reproduction instead of the real thing. Like it or not, fraud will always rear its ugly head in an unregulated market where money talks and emotions run wild.

Over the years, certain advancements in the trade were created and adopted to help prevent items from being

misrepresented, whether intentional or otherwise. The advent of third-party grading was a step in the right direction. It revolutionized a lot of collectible markets like coins, paper money, comic books, trading cards, and even toys. Still, third-party grading has its limits. Many decades after its introduction, only a fraction of markets still utilize it, and this is for good reason. Attempting to grade and encapsulate a Rookwood vase or an antique glass bottle in a sealed plastic case would not be practical and in most cases (pun intended) would be quite laughable. Still, there are other ways to certify something without encasing it in plastic. Art has always been one such example. Having a document signed by a top art expert, auction house, or gallery signifying the provenance of the piece in question can very well be worth its weight in gold. At least, that is what a lot of high profile dealers and collectors were once led to believe, and this leads to why watching “Made You Look: A True Story About Fake Art” is so important.

The documentary takes an inside look at the Knoedler Gallery, an exclusive art gallery in the heart of New York City that was founded in 1846. Up until the closing of the gallery in 2011 amid alleged reports of

Trove Of Artwork By Late Connecticut Painter Found In Central Pennsylvania Collection Going

George Luks, Ashle Gorky, and Kimon Nicolaids.

Arthur, from Stamford, Conn., was a well-established artist during the 1940s through the 1970s. He exhibited at prominent artist institutions and had showings at galleries across the northeast, including New York City. In 1945, one of his works, “The Green Pool,” was published in “Time Magazine” as critics choice.

A selection of the artist’s works will be offered at auction on Friday, Feb. 24, by Cordier Auctions in Harrisburg. Arthur’s work evolved in style, but he primarily worked in acrylic, oil,

and watercolor. He was considered an expressionist or abstractionist. Some of his work could be described as surrealistic.

Arthur’s early artistic education included the institutions Grand Central School of Art and the Artist Student League in New York City, as well as the George P. Ennis School in Eastport, Maine. By the 1940s he was studying art history at Columbia University. Like many artists, his education included working under more established artists. His influence and training came from the likes of

He was most prolific from the 1940s to the 1970s, exhibiting his work in both one-man and group shows. Some of the most notable venues included the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia, the Carnegie Museum of Fine Art in Pittsburgh, and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art. Several prominent museums have his works in their permanent collections, including The Brooklyn Museum in New York., The Delaware Museum of Art in Wilmington, the AKG Art Museum in Buffalo, N.Y., and The Walker Art Center in

Minneapolis, Minn.

During the 1940s and 1950s, Arthur’s works and style were also published in art and general publications including Time Magazine, Esquire, Art Digest, and American Artist.

Cordier Auctions discovered the collection when hired to sell the estate of Sandra Byham in State College. Since the 1970s, Byham had been working on placing the collection with an institution but was unsuccessful.

for Political Actions Committees. Also, Paul Gibson of Shipping Saint led a discussion on valuable shipping tips.

The PAA also hosted National Auctioneers Association President (and PAA member) Sherm Hostetter, who spoke on Auction Company Management and Growth. His NAA appointee Chris Rasmus of Virginia covered topics such as How to Build a Brand.

Member Jason Reed spoke on Marketing and Analytics, while

2022 President Jamie Shearer shared some valuable “tricks of the trade” regarding communications with potential and current clients.

Member Stephen Turner gave an informative presentation on a currently hot market category, MidCentury Modern items. Seltzer Smokehouse Meats supplied not only a presenter, who spoke about their family-run business, but also brought along sample products, including Lebanon Sweet Bologna.

Of course, this event would not be what it is without generous sponsors. The highest level sponsors included E. R. Munro & Company (Corporate Registration

Sponsor) and Platinum sponsors United Merchant Processing Association, Shipping Saint, Shearer Printing & Office Solutions, Sanford Alderfer Real Estate, Lancaster Farming, Bidsquare, and AuctionTime/ AuctionFlex. There were many other sponsors at various levels, all of which are listed on www.PAAuctioneers.org.

Several awards were given out to honor some of those who have dedicated their careers to the industry and who have made the industry better for all. Daniel A. Trace of Trace Auction Service in Meadville is the newest inductee into the PAA Hall of Fame. This award is given to an individual based on integrity, honesty, high moral character, acute fairness, and distinction and is bestowed on an auctioneer each year who, over the course of his or her profession, has committed him or herself to fostering excellence in the auction industry. Additionally, the title of Auctioneer of the Year is given to an auctioneer who has shown excellent leadership, high ethical standards, willingness to share with others, participation in community affairs, and outstanding contributions to the PAA and the auction profession.

recipient is Kimberly K. Douglass of Kimberly K Auction LLC in Boyertown.

Annually, the PAA hosts the Pennsylvania Auctioneer Competition Championship at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex coinciding with the PA Farm Show. This year, as always, there were hundreds in attendance and participating in the auction. The competition was held the evening of Jan. 11, highlighting the best auctioneers licensed in the state of Pennsylvania. Of the 17 contestants competing, Brian Burke II of Meshoppen was judged as the overall champion. The runner-up was Shawn Carbaugh of Spring

Grove, and the Rookie (licensed for less than two years) was Spencer Karns of Claysburg. The top female competitor was Dana Balsamo of Princeton, N.J.

This year also marked a significant year in that the PAA held a Champion of Champions Auctioneer Contest. This is a contest held once every five years consisting of past PA Auctioneer Competition Champions. Of the 10 contestants, coming out on top as the Champion of Champions was J. Meryl Stoltzfus of Newport, and runner-up was John Stauffer of Robesonia. In third place was Patrick Morgan of New Holland. Several auction companies

were given awards in the firstplace categories within the PAA Advertising and Marketing Contest, including Patrick Morgan Auction Services LLC; Alderfer Auction; Hurley Auctions; Les Longenecker; L & H Auctions; H.K. Keller; Lane Ryan Auctions; Pook and Pook Inc; Ken Geyer Real Estate Auctioneers and Hostetter Auctioneers. The “Best of Show” strictly a judges’ award, was bestowed on Hostetter Auctioneers, who also won the Advertising and Marketing award of “Auctioneer’s Choice,” which was judged and chosen by all auctioneers attending the conference.

Officers for the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association for 2023 include: President Lon Clemmer of Harleysville; President-Elect Thomas Saylor of Felton; Vice President Michael Calvert of Linesville; and Treasurer Robert A. Ensminger of Harrisburg. Jamie Shearer of Downingtown will serve on the PAA Board as the immediate Past President. Kimberly K. Douglass of Boyertown is the executive director for the association. Six Original Paintings By Canadian Folk Artist Maud Lewis Slated For Feb. 11 Auction

Strong Market For Lewis’s Work

Six original oil on board paintings by renowned Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (1903-70) are expected headliners in Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.’s online-only Canadiana and Folk Art Auction set for Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning at 9 a.m. Eastern time. Nearly 300 lots in a wide array of popular collecting categories will be offered.

Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. is no stranger to Maud Lewis. Her work has been featured in several past sales, including one held in October 2022, in which 11 paintings by the artist sailed past their high estimates to bring a combined $559,510.

The top lot was “Winter Sleigh Ride” (est. $20,000-$25,000); it finished at $100,300. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars.

Five of the paintings in the upcoming auction carry estimates of $25,000-$30,000 each.

The first, titled “Oxen in Winter,”is a 12-by-14-inch serial image that spans three decades. It depicts a pair of oxen, whose eyelashes open

directly at the viewer, flanked with conifers. The signed painting comes with an audio file of an interview with the original owner and purchaser. The second is another

serial image, titled “Horse Pulling Logs,” artist signed and large at 14.25-by-16.5 inches (sight, less frame). Maud embellishes a chocolate brown Clydesdale or Percheron, with

logs loaded onto a bobsled (a favorite subject of the artist), depicted on a cold winter day. This painting also comes with an audio file of an interview with the original owner.

Another, “The Three Black Cats,” a serial image only found in the mid-to-late 1960s, was likely painted in 1966. The happiness that Lewis conveys with this painting is immense. There

is no room for anything but a proud mother and her kittens, all with wide bright eyes, in a setting surmounted with cherry blossoms. The 12-by-12.5-inch

potential forgeries, the highend art market respected the Knoedler Gallery as a trusted source. Sadly, as the documentary begins to explore, not all is as it seems, and several highprofile collectors receive an unfortunate lesson on unregulated markets and the consequences of a lack of transparency in the overall market. I do not wish to spoil this documentary, as I truly believe viewing it can, at the very least, make any collector or investor operating in any market within the antiques and collectibles trade a better and more cautious collector.

I do recognize that this documentary will not be for everyone, and I do not expect every person to enjoy it as much as I did. I have mentioned this film in previous writings, and among those who watched it, the reviews were mixed. Most collectors have no interest in art,

and that may actually be a good thing. One of the interesting lessons that becomes apparent after watching is just how hard it can be to assess the authenticity of modern or even contemporary art. In certain instances it can be easier to authenticate a piece of art done by Monet or Van Gogh than that of someone like Jackson Pollock. If a viewer has even a passing interest in art, then this chilling lesson becomes even more important. As a huge fan of artists like Andy Warhol and Banksy, I am often terrified at the thought of just how many fakes are floating out there. This is one reason I own very few pieces of art in my personal collections. And even after having the privilege of handling several authenticated Andy Warhol pieces and a few Picasso sketches, I would never consider myself to be anywhere near an expert, let alone someone with an advanced knowledge of art.

I have once said that certain

markets in the antiques and collectibles trade should not be speculator friendly. Art is one of those markets, and after watching the documentary, I am confident you will agree with that sentiment. In some of my future articles I will be exploring several other documentaries surrounding the antiques and collectibles trade. I don’t want to give too much away, but prepare to read about the speculative nature of PEZ dispensers and Beanie Babies, as each of these collectibles also got the documentary treatment. It’s a great time to be a collector, that’s for sure!

composition “A Schooner Taking Shelter From the Storm.” The other is an oilon-canvas painting titled “The Lighthouse and Three Schooners,” with lobster boats and fishermen on shore.

Rounding out just some of the auction’s expected top performers is a rare and

early figural trade sign for the watchmaker George Hess (Zurich, Huron Cty., Ontario, ca. 1860), made from iron and wood, and a late 20th century paint and mud-on-board portrait of “Girl With Yellow Hat” by Louisiana Outsider Master Jimmy Lee Sudduth.

While this is an onlineonly auction, with no inperson event to attend, bidders can tune in to the live webcast to watch the lots close in real time.
