Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.

The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively

for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel

running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.

The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

This past weekend, I was out hitting the antiques malls looking for treasures. I saw prices were up on some things and others were still bargains. Nothing new here. There have always been treasures to be found if you open your mind a bit so you don’t need to open your wallet. My find for the Saturday afternoon of treasure-hunting was a collection of wood block planes that were marked by both the manufacturer and also the woodworker who had used them. I recognized the latter as a noted Carlisle carpenter/cabinetmaker who I had written about in my Masters’ thesis many years ago. The planes were also marked by the maker, which was neat, since several of the factories were located a few blocks from my present office in Philadelphia. And a small number were marked by the Carlisle retailer who sold the planes to the local carpenter a hundred years ago. I started to collect planes many years ago on the tip of a good friend of mine, Jim

by the different types of planes and soon we were matching rounds and beads on woodwork in the house. She asked if the planes were still useable, and I proceeded to dig out a piece of pine and demonstrate how to use them. The edges were still sharp and the planes quite useable. So, if you’re looking to interest that young collector, a sampling of wood planes and one of the standard reference guides is a great place to begin in collecting antiques. Collectors can then build upon that interest by acquiring planes from their home towns, unusual planes used for specific trades, or those made by interesting makers. All in all, a pretty cool topic to collect.

By Peter Seibert

Mitchell, who was curator of science and technology at the State Museum in Harrisburg. Jim noted that wooden planes were almost exclusively pre-1900 in age and were often crafted of some of the finest wood with real attention to detail that only came from craftsmanship. With that in mind, over the years, I have purchased interesting planes where I could find them. Emanuel Carpenter, the famed Lancaster plane maker, was always a target of interest for me when I was out. And, of course, there is the elusive retailer marker of Kelker Brothers from Harrisburg, which I have seen but never owned. The planes that I purchased were around $15-$17, which is exactly what I paid for my first plane nearly 30 years ago. Prices have moved down, and they remain at bargain levels. I am told that in the old days planes were so cheap and undervalued that they were often burned for firewood. Hopefully that is more apocryphal than true. Still, outside of the rare 18th-century makers and those elaborate boxwood and brass examples from gentlemen’s carpenter’s chests, wood planes have remained a real bargain. My wife was watching TV with me the other night while I was cataloging the planes. I am a big advocate for writing information down on antiques purchases, as memories fade fast. She became fascinated

Golden Age Comics Collection Keeps Its Promise With Earth-Shattering $7 Million Debut First Grouping Of 181 Comics From The Promise Collection Sold sold for a total of $7.1 million. That is a fraction of 5,000-plus comic books that make up the Promise Collection, which will be sold throughout this year and next. About 100 more books from the collection were sold day three. This report is not a recap of all three days. “We’re just blown away,” said Heritage Auctions Vice President Lon Allen moments after the morning session closed. “Every single book was over the top, and deservedly so.” But Batman met his match on day two, The Phantom Lady. There is no disputing that Matt Baker’s cover to Phantom Lady No. 17, from 1948, is considered

The copy found in the Promise Collection survived not only intact, but at CGC NM+ 9.6 is the highest graded. Bidding on Phantom Lady No. 17 opened at $95,000 during the live auction. Then back and forth the bidding went until it closed at $456,000. In fact, all 11 issues of Phantom Lady available were huge hits, chief among them the No. 14 graded CGC NM+ 9.6. That highest-graded copy opened the live auction at $7,000 and closed at $90,000.

at 11 a.m., Eastern time. Jack Rennert, president of Poster Auctions International Inc., said, “This auction features some of our strongest collections by the masters of the poster: Broders, Cappiello, Cassandre, Loupot, Mucha, Schnackenberg, and ToulouseLautrec. These include beloved posters as well as extremely rare prints and original works.” Leonetto Cappiello is widely considered to be the father of modern advertising for his innovative approach of using unusual imagery to create brand memorability. This sale features 26 of his rarest and most iconic works: the 1902 Mele (est. $5,000-$6,000), the 1905 Fleur des Neiges / Biscuits Pernot (est. $7,000$9,000), the circa 1907 Cognac Gautier Frères (est. $7,000$9,000), the 1921 Café Martin (est. $14,000-$17,000), and an extremely rare two-sheet printing of the famous 1903 Chocolat Klaus (est. $17,000$20,000). Two spectacular maquettes for an apéritif and wine will also be on offer (est. $10,000-$12,000 and $12,000$15,000). During the Belle Époque, Alphonse Mucha capitalized on the beauty of lithography, and 19 of his most sumptuous works will be at auction, including the large-format 1896 The Seasons (est.

In the Art Deco era, Roger Broders championed French travel posters, which often feature stylish vacationers in idyllic settings. Eight of his most magnificent designs will be up for bid, including the circa 1930 Monte-Carlo (est. $10,000-$12,000), the 1930 Antibes (est. $8,000-$10,000), and the 1929 Dunkerque (est. $17,000-$20,000). A. M. Cassandre was

Hunter works achieved the auction’s fifth- and seventh-highest bids; Rowe, the sixth- and 10th-highest bids. Slotin believes interest in the latter was boosted by “Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe,” the first major exhibition of the folk artist’s work in more than 20 years, opening at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art on Sept. 3. Speaking of growing bidder interest in Black folk artists from the South in general, Slotin said, “Because of the Black Lives Matter movement, we see a lot of attention being given to the pioneers, not just in the arts but across the African-American community. Outsider Art Market Showing Strength Overseas Two big names in the world of self-taught art., Martin Ramirez and Howard Finster, brought the biggest results in Slotin Folk Art Auction’s Spring Self-Taught Art Masterpiece Sale on April 24. Overall, the sale was a barn burner with total revenues of $1.36 million, marking it as one of the auction house’s most successful sales in its nearly three decades of operation, approaching the $1.48 million record from November 2020’s Fall Self-Taught Masterpiece Sale. But what was remarkable beyond the biggest numbers was the number of records shattered for works by selftaught artists not usually listed on the leader board at Slotin or elsewhere. That included world-record sales results for the late Florida artist Frog Smith (the painting “Dowling Camp Mill at Slater, FL” that went for $17,500), Atlanta artist Lorenzo Scott (“Baptism of Jesus” painting, $13,125), the late New York artist Daniel Pressley (carved wood relief plaque “Wait at the Water,” $11,875) and a work by the late New York artist Rex Clawson that realized $8,750. In all, works by at least a dozen artists commanded world record prices. All noted prices include a 25 percent buyer’s premium.
