Gehman Auctions To Sell Large Grouping Of Folk Art Buildings, Animals, And Figures
Gehman Auctions of Ephrata Pa., will hold an online-only Antique, Primitive and Collectibles Auction ending on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. at www.gehman auctions.hibid.com.
A fresh-to-market large and meticulously rendered collection of mid-late 19th-century wood-carved folk art buildings, animals, and figures ranks among the highlights. This intricate work features multiple structures, including a
sizable, well-decorated home with furnishings and a large iconic Pennsylvania barn with removable gable roof and prominent forebank, even an outhouse. There are multiple wagons and buggies including a Reading Dairy wagon.
The complete eye catching collection is a wonderful showcase of meticulous, thoughtful and detailed handwork with fully movable and working carts drawn by horses with detailed tack and complicated single and double yokes. Bright and original red and green paint adorn wagons and their harnesses. A closer look reveals that many of these pieces have been produced from cast-off items such as a cheese box, a cigar box lid, repurposed scraps of lace or a small section of an old ruler. There is so much character and life in this large
Of the approximately 34 paintings attributed to Johannes Vermeer, whose extraordinary art has captivated viewers since his rediscovery in the 19th century, wall maps and other cartographic objects are depicted in nine of them, including The Frick Collection’s renowned “Officer and Laughing Girl” and the artist’s masterpiece in Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, “The Art of Painting.” With stunning reproductions and incisive text, the Frick’s new publication, “Vermeer’s Maps,” is the most comprehensive study of the artist’s depiction of wall maps to date. Drawing on rare surviving
examples of the physical maps and other primary sources, author Rozemarijn Landsman examines this intriguing aspect of Vermeer’s work, greatly enriching and expanding our understanding of the art and life of the “Sphinx of Delft.”
As Landsman writes in the book’s introduction, “While scholars continue to remark on the prominence of maps in Vermeer’s art, these objects are rarely the center of attention. […] Questions about the maps in Vermeer’s paintings linger: What kinds of maps are they? How were they made? For whom were they produced? What were their func-
tions? Above all, the questions of what maps meant for Vermeer and his art and what may have motivated him to choose these specific objects to adorn his painted walls remain to be addressed.” A doctoral candidate at Columbia University, Landsman was the 2019–21 Anne L. Poulet Curatorial Fellow at The Frick Collection.
“Vermeer’s Maps” is being published October 2022 by The Frick Collection in association with DelMonico Books/D.A.P. New York. The 128-page hardcover volume includes 68 color images and 30 in black and white ($39.95,
Metropolitan Museum Of Art Announces
The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced that it has received a gift of a rare American weathervane from Michael and Patricia Del Castello. Produced by an unidentified maker between 1909 and 1913, it was likely commissioned for the Poland Spring House, Poland Spring, Maine, where it was installed on its rooftop by 1914 and remained on view until 1973. The commanding and distinctive weathervane joins The Met’s growing collection of American vernacular sculpture and is now on view in Gallery 732 in the American Wing.
“This weathervane is an extraordinary example of American vernacular sculpture,” stated Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French Director of The Met. “The gift marks an important development as the museum continues to evolve the breadth of its collecting, especially as the American Wing approaches its centennial year in 2024. We are deeply grateful to Michael and Patricia Del Castello for their generous gift of this unique work of art.”
Primarily used to indicate and measure wind direction, weathervanes represent an American sculptural tradition that dates back to the early 18th century. This weathervane was modeled after the Blériot Model XI Monoplane, a small plane that the French aviator and engineer Louis Blériot (1872–1936) flew across the English Channel on July 25, 1909, marking the first airplane flight across the channel, 25 miles from Calais to Dover. Blériot helped design the plane and put it into production, setting records for flying speed, altitude, and distance. The plane was popular in races in both Europe and the United States. The weathervane representing the monoplane presumably was made in response to races held between French and

The Frey Pottery: The Forgotten History Of An American Red Earthenware Manufacturer
A Closer Look At Colorful American Art Pottery
By Justin W. Thomas
Spanning from the 1870s through the 1950s, the evolution of American art pottery was associated with three different movements:
1) The Arts and Crafts Period, 1880-1910;
2) The Art Nouveau Period, 1890-1910;
3) The Art Deco Period, 1920s.
These movements drew inspiration from a variety of resources, such as the 1876
Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, which was a catalyst for the art pottery movement in the late 1870s and the early 1880s. American potters were inspired by ceramic displays from Great Britain, France and the Far East, and they were introduced to new forms, techniques and glazes.
Overall, art pottery was produced by over 200 studios and factories in America, although most were forced out of business due to cheaper mass-produced
wares made in the late 1800s and early 1900s, World War I and the Great Depression in the 1930s.
The forms associated with this movement range from tall vases to tiles, and the works featured original designs, simple shapes, and experimental glazes and painting techniques. This movement was prominent with potters throughout America, especially early on in places like Massachusetts and Ohio. These types of wares were even exported all over the country.

But not every American art potter is well documented today, whereas the history of some of these businesses have been somewhat forgotten through the years, which includes wares occasionally found in the antique trade today impressed on the base, “Frey.” The identity of this company has been a source of interpretation through the years, including associating production with red earthenware made by the Frey family in Pennsylvania, while there has even been a theory that these wares were made in France. I have even heard that these objects were made just outside of New York City in New Jersey.
Furthermore, the Frey family’s production began around 1810, when Henry Frey moved onto his father-in-law’s farm in a rural area of Washington Township, Pa. After Frey died in 1821, the farm was divided among his four sons. The pottery continued to be run by his sons, Henry Jr. and George, and during this period the area was renamed Freytown. After Henry Jr.’s death, George Frey maintained the pottery until his death in 1846.

nor is it responsible for errors in ads taken by phone. Advertisers submitting artwork and images for use in advertisements assume all liability in regards to trademark and copyright infringements.
The artware made from red earthenware marked “Frey” obviously dates from the 1900s, so there is no direct relationship to the wares made in Freytown before 1846. There is also no evidence in any of the local museums that suggest these wares were made in the area. However, these wares are certainly American made and should receive much more attention today, especially in consideration of the historical context

that they were made during the American art pottery movement.
The known forms include jars, vases, pitchers, banks and lamps. The glazes are usually extremely colorful and often just as impressive as some of the best glazes produced in America in the 1900s. Some of the pottery is also marked on the base with a number, which may be related to production or a reference to how many objects were made during a specific kiln firing, although it is possible the numbers may be related to a specific form, where other American art potters used numbers marked on the base that relate to an exact form in

a company catalog.
Among what can be considered the most prized glazes are the few known objects entirely decorated in cobalt, such as a large, handled jar owned by the American Folk Art Museum in Manhattan, N.Y., that was gifted to the museum by Maryann and Raymond Warakomski. In fact, the mere use of cobalt on red earthenware is extremely rare.
But the only evidence that I have found that may identify the origin of this pottery business is an advertisement published in the Nov. 26, 1926, issue of the of the Evening Star in Washington, D.C., for Woodward & Lothrop’s Department Store.
Woodward & Lothrop was a store chain headquartered
in Washington, D.C., that began as the capital’s first department store in 1887. “Woodies,” as it was often nicknamed, maintained stores in the Midatlantic region. Its flagship store was a fixture of Washington, D.C.’s, downtown shopping district, competing with Garfinckel’s and acquiring Palais Royal. The chain filed for bankruptcy in January 1994 and completed liquidation in November 1995, with most locations sold to either J.C. Penney or May Department Stores Company.
The advertisement includes a section describing lamp bases made at the “Vic Frey Pottery,” which ranged in price from $8 to $25 each. It includes an illustration of a

eBay Returns To Its Origins As The Collectibles Market Soars To New Heights
craze, vintage PEZ dispensers, certain 1990s action figures, Atari video games, and even comic books all benefited from the rise of eBay.
available in other markets.
By Shawn Surmick
An urban legend still circulating to this day incorrectly states that the online auction platform known as eBay was started when founder Pierre Omidyar wanted to get rid of his wife’s PEZ collection. This legend of the company’s founding has been disputed multiple times. Pierre actually started the company out of his home in September of 1995. The original name of the platform was Auction Web, but soon eBay would become the new moniker. The basic idea was to create a place where buyers and sellers could engage in an online marketplace. I was incredibly lucky at the time, as I was an early adopter to the platform and made a livelihood by buying and selling collectibles on the site. In fact, back in the 1990s and early to mid-2000s, eBay was synonymous with the antiques and collectibles trade, and at one time the company boasted having almost 30,000 categories devoted to the collectibles trade alone. eBay alone is credited with spawning multiple speculative bubbles within the trade. The Beanie Baby
Since eBay was highly regarded as the first online auction platform that was accepted by the masses, competition was a given. The rise of Yahoo Auctions in the late 1990s was supposed to deliver eBay a death blow, but it instead just became a secondary alternative that had looser restrictions and virtually no fees. True competition in the collectibles world would come when high-profile auction houses started to open online venues to attract bidders. It was at this time that almost every major company was attempting to transition to having an online presence. Antique and collectible dealers were not immune from the trend. I fondly remember doing business with wellrespected coin dealers as early as 2001 and, yes, most of these well-known dealers are still around today.
Much like most new companies with a new concept to explore, eBay wanted to expand. Collectibles were already providing a lot of revenue for eBay, but eBay wanted to attract major corporations to their site, thinking they could provide a good revenue stream by selling their own products. To be fair to eBay, this was a good strategy. A major manufacturer could potentially use the site to clear out surplus inventory or as an additional revenue stream to make their products
Unlike a small collectibles reseller who only had a limited amount of inventory, a major corporation could potentially list their entire inventory over and over again. Over time, eBay started to cater to these types of corporations at the expense of smaller sellers.
Continuously raising fees and adopting controversial policies ensured that smaller sellers were being placed second when compared to major corporations and larger sellers. By the late 2000s, it became quite clear that eBay was no longer the company it once was. By this time, collecting categories on the site were either discontinued altogether or combined into others.
Fast forward to the last few years, and suddenly the collectibles marketplace is on fire.
Numerous collecting categories are soaring to new heights, and with the advent of third-party grading affecting everything from comic books and toys to trading cards and video games, lots of collectibles can be easily sold sight unseen with little risk. Then the pandemic had millions of collectors inside on their computers; eBay, among other auction sites and collectible dealers, benefited during this time. This caused the company to move further into the collectibles marketplace with the advent of the eBay Vault. Now collectors of graded trading cards (from “Pokemon” to sports cards) could have eBay hold their treasures in a state of the art climate controlled storage facility. eBay was quickly starting to cater again to the same collectors who once flocked to their site in 1995, but even the advent of eBay Vault wasn’t the company’s biggest announcement. On Aug. 22, 2022, the company put out a press release stating they agreed to a $295 million acquisition of the collectible trading card platform TCGPlayer. TCGPlayer is an online marketplace that caters specifically to the buying and selling of collectible trading card games like “Magic: The Gathering,” “Pokemon,” and “YuGiOh.” When the announcement was made, it caused a lot of controversy among collectors operating in this segment of the collectibles market. TCGPlayer was always known as an alternative marketplace to eBay, and now that it is being gobbled up by a competitor, some enthusiasts are not happy.
Luckily, however, it appears that eBay is going to keep the company independent from eBay,com, so perhaps the outcry is overblown at present time. Acquisitions in the antiques and collectibles trade are nothing new, and that will be discussed in an upcoming article.
Personally, I consider eBay’s actions the last few years to be positive. As someone who stuck by the platform since the beginning, I always felt that eBay needed to return to its roots. That said, I am anything but naive and fully recognize that the company is doing this in response to the overall market conditions in the collectibles trade. Should we return to a time where the collectibles trade is not on fire like it is today, eBay may choose to go in another direction yet again. Make no mistake, however, these moves are a testament to just how hot the market for certain collectibles is at present time. Speculators, be warned!

The company that became Fulper Pottery was established in 1814 in Flemington, N.J., by Samuel Hill (1793-1858), a potter originally from New Brunswick, N.J. He manufactured a variety of utilitarian shapes and drainpipe from the local red earthenware clay. However, when Hill died in 1858, Abraham Fulper (181581) began purchasing the pottery from the estate, and by the 1860s, the company was known as the Fulper Pottery.
According to the book, “Woodward and Lothrop: A Store Worthy of the Nation’s Capital,” “Affectionately called Woodies’ by local Washingtonians, the beloved department store Woodward and Lothrop stood at the heart of downtown for over a century. Crowds flocked to the flagship store on the F Street shopping corridor to find better service and the season’s fashions. The store and its employees shared in the best moments in the lives of Washingtonians, from the elaborate holiday window displays to the Wedding Service department that helped countless brides choose their China patterns. For weary shoppers, the Bake Shop and seventh-floor Tea Room offered city favorites such as Wellesley Fudge Cupcakes and Chicken Pot Pie.”

Additionally, there is a red earthenware pitcher displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, N.Y., that may have been made at the Frey Pottery, although it lacks specific information about its production, other than described as being made in Pennsylvania. However, the pitcher was gifted to the museum by Robert
Nevertheless, the Frey Pottery of the 1900s may have been a short-lived enterprise, and that is why so little is known about the company today, although it appears that lamps account for many of the objects in existence. These wares are relatively rare to find today, even though during the time they were produced the company must have had a significant output. This may have also been a shortlived business venture that did not find a great amount of success because of the circumstances of the American economy caused by WWI and eventually the Great Depression. In some ways I also want to compare this production to Pennsylvania red earthenware made in the 1900s by Jacob Medinger (1857-1932) and the Stahl family, whereas these hand-thrown wares marked “Frey” are accomplished and should be held in high regard today, especially because of the aesthetically accomplished glazes that were produced.
This 20th-century red earthenware lamp base is marked “Frey.” The finial on the top is also made out of red earthenware. The known Frey lamps came in a variety of shapes and sizes, many of which are adorned in vibrant multi-colored glazes. Photo courtesy private collection.

Massive 1963 Belgian Dance Organ With Robot Musicians Brings $350,550
Owner Of Florida Toy Museum Buys Organ
A trio of robot musicians with a captivating, toe-tapping sound led the parade of mechanical music machines and automata at Morphy’s $2.3 million sale of the Henri Krijnen collection, and according to the buyer, the Space-Age combo’s next stop will be a museum or related attraction in Florida.
The Sept. 9 and 10 auction featured 541 lots of dance organs, orchestrions, slot machines and a myriad of other antique coin-operated novelties amassed over 50 years by the late Mr. Krijnen, a Dutch
businessman who made his fortune in the gambling and entertainment industry. The robot dance organ, created by Gebroeders Decap (Antwerp, Belgium) in 1963, was known to be one of Krijnen’s favorites. It is one of three that were made in a 105-key configuration, and was originally installed at the Hotel Eemland in Soest, Netherlands. Later in its lifetime, it was professionally restored to perfection by AC Pilmer Automatic Music of Ossett, England.
Members of the robot band are programmed to play drums, a
saxophone and brass horn, respectively, and the latter two even stand up for their “solos.” At one corner of the stage, a smaller robot of similar composition smiles and reminds patrons to tip the performers. Against an estimate of $100,000-$200,000, the robot dance organ attracted 31 bids before selling for an astonishing $350,550. The buyer is Ozzie Bilotta, whose private museum of vintage toys, arcade machines and related memorabilia, The Bilotta Collection, will open its doors this fall in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
“Being that the robot band was created in 1963, right in the heart of the classic sci-fi era, it fits right in with the museum’s theme of robots and space toys. However, the band is so large, nearly 12 feet wide, that I’m considering a few options. It might become the visual centerpiece at an affiliated business to be located near the museum. It needs plenty of room to ‘breathe.’ Hopefully, I’ll have things figured out by the time it arrives from its current location (in Oosterhout, the Netherlands). I’m excited to bring this wonderful

Thayer Tolles, Marica F. Vilcek Curator of American Painting and Sculpture. “The weathervane is distinctive not only for its commanding scale and complexity of assembly, but also its reference to a historical event.”

Brandywine River Museum Of Art Annouces New Wyeth Foundation Curator Of The Andrew And Betsy Wyeth Collection William L. Coleman, Ph.D., To Work In New Post
The Brandywine River Museum of Art announced today the appointment of William L. Coleman, Ph.D. as the Wyeth Foundation curator of the Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Collection and director of the Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Study Center. Coleman, an experienced curator, art historian and teacher, will assume this newly created senior position at the Brandywine on Oct. 17. Funded by the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, this role emerged from an innovative collections-sharing partnership between the Brandywine, the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Wyeth Foundation, which was announced earlier this spring.
“We are thrilled to welcome William to this new position,” said Thomas Padon, the James H. Duff Director of the Brandywine River Museum of Art. “His appointment is key to activating Betsy Wyeth’s estate plan in which her remarkable collection of Andrew Wyeth’s works would be accessible to the public and future generations of scholars in perpetuity. William’s in-depth knowledge of and experience in the field of American art make him the ideal person to bring fresh perspectives to Wyeth’s sevendecade career through exhibitions, long-term loans, public programs and publications.”
In his new role as the Wyeth Foundation curator, Coleman will be responsible
for stewarding the Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Collection, located jointly at the Brandywine in Chadds Ford, Pa., and at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, the two geographic regions where Andrew Wyeth lived and painted. Managed by Coleman under the auspices of the Brandywine, the collection is comprised of nearly 7,000 works from across Wyeth’s seven decades as a working artist, including rarely seen paintings, watercolors, sketches and sketchbooks. Based in Chadds Ford on the Brandywine’s campus, Coleman will work in both Pennsylvania and Maine and be supported by a staff of three full-time employees. Together they will plan and develop exhibitions, make works available for loan to other institutions, and foster new research and scholarship on the life and work of Andrew Wyeth, including producing the catalogue raisonné of the artist. Coleman will also be responsible for curating compelling displays of a broad range of Andrew Wyeth’s works for both the Brandywine’s and Farnsworth’s dedicated Wyeth galleries throughout the year.
“The collaborative artistic practice of Andrew and Betsy
Wyeth has been a lodestar throughout my life so it’s a thrill and an honor to be entrusted with the stewardship of their creative legacy in this unique new role,” said Coleman.
“I see Andrew Wyeth’s work as an essential manifestation of many divergent strains in the history of American art. Through the astonishing holdings of the Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Collection, we’ll be able to draw out these associations and dialogues as never before.”
Coleman comes to the Brandywine from The Olana Partnership, Hudson, N.Y, where he served as the Director of Collections and Exhibitions. Since 2019, Coleman has overseen the organization’s 90,000-item collection/archive, as well as the traveling loan exhibitions
program of the artist
Frederic Edwin Church’s 250-acre estate, a New York State Historic Site and National Historic Landmark. Coleman has particular expertise in 19th-century American landscape painting and has published a variety of related scholarship on the subject, as well as on architecture and music.
“My own diverse path in curatorial work, research, and teaching on historic and contemporary American art, including the challenges and opportunities of single-artist legacy collections, has given me a unique perspective on this powerful body of work that I greatly look forward to sharing with the Brandywine and Farnsworth audiences,” added Coleman. “On a personal level, I am excited to be based at Brandywine’s Chadds Ford campus. Some of my very earliest museum memories are of visits to the Brandywine while growing up in metro Philadelphia, so this will be a most welcome homecoming to an institution I love already. It will be a great pleasure to work with others who believe in the missions of the Brandywine and the Farnsworth as I do and to share my passion for American art and the Wyeths.”
Both the Brandywine and Farnsworth museums have longstanding relationships with the Wyeth family. Located in Chadds Ford, the Brandywine is focused on American art and has generated some of the most wellreceived exhibitions and
scholarship on three generations of Wyeth family artists.
In 2017, the Brandywine’s “Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect” exhibition presented more than 100 of the artist’s most important paintings and works on paper, along with a catalogue publishing new perspectives on his work and career. The Farnsworth, in Rockland, Maine, is also recognized for its close connections with and exhibitions of works by the Wyeth family. The artist spent his summers living and working in midcoastal Maine.
Its recent exhibition, “Andrew Wyeth: Maine Legacy,” highlighted the artist’s connections to the area. In both Pennsylvania and Maine, Wyeth was engaged by the landscapes and the people living there, finding inspiration for works that at once capture the majesty of nature and the everyday lives of the artists and their subjects.

Pleased As Punch: The Best Of Britain Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century
By Donald-Brian Johnson
“MAD” had gap-toothed goof Alfred E. Neuman. “The New Yorker” has top-hatted dandy Eustace Tilley. And “Punch,” Britain’s long-lived humor magazine, had...well... “Punch.”
This crook-nosed trickster was the cover boy for almost every issue of “Punch,” from its very first, in 1841, to its very last, in 1992. During that 150-year span, Mr. Punch (usually accompanied by his dog Toby), found himself in every sort of whimsical situation, from watering spring flowers with a set of bagpipes, to posing as Sherlock Holmes (with Toby as a nervous suspect). If the situations at times bordered on the cartoonish, so much the better. “Punch” was, after all, the publication that first embodied the term “cartoon.”
Founders Henry Mayhew and Ebenezer Landells, along with co-editor Mark Lemon, saw their magazine’s mission as offering humor laced with a healthy dose of satire. To get that point across, what better choice for a mascot
Here, Mr. Punch makes his entrance: “Introduction” illustration from the first issue of Punch, July 17, 1841.

than Mr. Punch? Even in 1841, he’d already been wreaking havoc for centuries, bringing his unique blend of comic anarchy to puppet shows around the world.
Although introduced in 15th century Italy as the commedia dell’arte figure “Punchinello,” Mr. Punch really came into his own in the mid-1600s, with his debut in England as a glove (hand) puppet. Aided by his wife Judy and a roster of colorful cohorts, Mr. Punch engaged in a variety of boisterous doings. A Punch-and-Judy show
Brandywine
The Collection of the Wyeth Foundation for American Art
The foundation’s collection is both broad and deep, and the majority of the works have never been exhibited publicly. Among the unusual elements are 70 of Wyeth’s oil paintings, very rare works, principally from the 1930s, when he experimented with the medium before adopting tempera and watercolor as his preferred mediums. These paintings, such as “Fox Grass Below Adams” (1934), currently on view at the Brandywine, reflect prevalent themes, yet their style and approach demonstrate his evolution as

was like an episode of “The Three Stooges” on steroids. Mr. Punch (think “Moe”) quarrels with everyone he encounters, his squawking kazoo-like voice courtesy of a mouth device (the “swazzle”) used by the puppeteer. Each short scene
usually concluded with “Punch” slapping his puppet co-star of the moment (think long-suffering “Larry” or “Curly”), with his ever-present stick (Yes, that’s right: his “slapstick”).
“Punch” (the puppet show) was fast-paced and episodic, so that passersby viewing street performances could come and go at will. “Punch”

an artist over his entire career.
Wyeth is best known for his tempera paintings, 48 of which are in the collection, including his 1966 tribute to his wife, Betsy, titled “Maga’s Daughter.” Also included are “Black Hunter” (1938), an early tempera, and Wyeth’s last major painting, “Goodbye” (2008), which has rarely been seen publicly. The collection features over 2,000 of Wyeth’s watercolors, for which he is renowned, many rendered using the “dry brush” technique.
The largest part of the collection are the more than 4,000 drawings: some are finished drawings, some are
preparatory drawings and sketches, and some are study pieces for works he would later paint in tempera or watercolor, and many are still in their original sketchbooks.
From the fully rendered work in pencil, “My Sister” (1967), to a casual portrait of his father, “Pa Writing at His Desk” (1942), to tempera studies for major paintings such as “That Gentleman Study” (1961), these drawings will provide a vast trove of information that reveal Wyeth’s thought process and experimentation with how to stage or represent different scenes.

Plenty of careful planning went into creating that final “impromptu” product.
Much like its American counterpart, “The New Yorker,” one could dip into “Punch” at will, experiencing whichever “episode” caught the eye. “Charivaria,” an opening collection of bits and pieces, gave readers a taste of the dry wit that was in store: “The Minister of Health has banned more than 600 drugs of ‘little or no medicinal value.’ This is a facer for doctors, who must still find something to give patients with little or nothing the matter with them.” Other samplings from
Punch’s tongue-in-cheek smorgasbord included poems, movie and stage reviews, essays, colorful advertisements, and...oh, yes...those cartoons.
Co-founder Landells, a wood-engraver and an ardent admirer of the satiric engravings in French magazines, saw “Punch” as the natural home for similar works. Previously, “cartoon” (from the Italian cartone) had referred to a preliminary sketch done on cardboard. In 1843, when British lawmakers displayed “cartoons” of murals intended to decorate the Houses of Parliament, “Punch” grabbed the term and ran with it. Soon, the magazine’s “cartoons” became one its most popular features.
Over the years, contributors to “Punch” included such literary lions as William Makepeace

Thackeray and A.A. Milne. Among its numerous illustrators: Alice in Wonderland’s John Tenniel. And among its even more numerous fans, such legends as Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Charles Dickens, and even Queen Victoria. Punch chugged along merrily into the 20th century, reaching its peak in the 1940s and ’50s. After that, readership began to taper off, as competitors with a more “modern” edge emerged. The original magazine stopped its presses in 1992, although there
was a brief resurrection from 1996-2002.
For today’s readers, vintage issues of “Punch” provide a distinctly British take on a worldthat-was. And, at $10-$20 an issue, they’re definitely affordable, so pick up a copy. Will you
be happy with your purchase? Why, you’ll be pleased as Punch!

Elverson Antiques Show Receives 2022 Best Of Oley Award
The Elverson Antiques Show has been selected for the 2022 Best of Oley Award in the Antique Store/Show category by the Oley Award Program.
Each year, the Oley Award Program identifies companies the group believes have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies/groups that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and the Oley regional community. These exceptional companies help make the Oley area a
great place to live, work and play.
Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2022 Oley Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Oley Award Program and data provided by third parties.
The Elverson Antiques Show is held in the spring and fall at Twin Valley Hgh School in Elverson, Pa. The upcoming show will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29 and 30.
About The Oley Award Program
The Oley Award Program is an annual awards program honoring the achievements and accomplishments of local businesses throughout the Oley area. Recognition is given to those companies that have shown the ability to use their best practices and implemented programs to generate competitive advantages and long-term value.
The Oley Award Program was established to recognize the best of local businesses in the community. This organization works exclusively with local business owners, trade groups, professional associations and other business advertising and marketing groups with the mission to recognize the small business community’s contributions to the economy.

“Walk This Way” On View At Michener Art Museum
“Walk This Way: Footwear from the Stuart Weitzman Collection of Historic Shoes” has opened at the James Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa. Presenting more than 100 pairs of shoes from the extensive private collection of iconic designer Stuart Weitzman and businesswoman Jane Gershon Weitzman, the exhibition runs through Jan. 15, 2023.
Focused on the women who designed, manufactured, sold, and collected footwear, the exhibit explores how shoes have transcended their utilitarian purpose to become representations of culture, coveted as objects of desire, designed with artistic consideration, and expressing complicated meanings of femininity, power, and aspiration.
This exhibition has been organized by the New-York
Society.
