Hake’s Auctions’ Screen-Used Captain America Shield Sells For $259,540 Australian Collector Is New Owner Of Hero-Prop Shield Used By Chris Evans During 2019’s Top-Grossing Film, “Avengers: Endgame” A Captain America “hero-prop” shield screen-used by Chris Evans in Marvel Studios’ 2019 blockbuster “Avengers: Endgame” sold for a heart-stopping $259,540 at Hake’s Auctions on Nov. 3. The marquee item in a two-day online auction of premier entertainment and historical memorabilia, the star-emblazoned shield opened at $20,000 and attracted 17 bids before selling to its new owner, Wilmot “Wil” Creasy. A commercial analyst with Creasy Group, a Western Australia business focused on mining and metals exploration and investment, Creasy now adds iconic aluminum to his burgeoning pop-culture portfolio, which reportedly also includes Pokémon cards. The shield was constructed for “Endgame” by Marvel Studios senior prop master Russell Bobbitt and appeared in the film’s allimportant close-up scenes. Other Captain America prop shields were created for use in long shots and action sequences but typically survived for only a few scenes before sustaining damage associated with stunt work. The near-pristine shield

auctioned by Hake’s was handled with care on-set so it could be featured in multiple close-up scenes throughout the film’s production. Bidder confidence was bolstered in no small way by the shield’s impeccable provenance. Previously, it had been gifted to youth empowerment nonprofit Sand Sisters Los Angeles Inc. by Marvel Studios’ executive vice president Victoria Alonso. In February 2020, it was the top prize in a raffle hosted by Sand Sisters (now known as “Girl Powerful”), and raised $155,801. The shield came to Hake’s with a custom-crafted plaque and Letter of Authenticity, both signed by Bobbitt. After the auction concluded, Hake’s president, Alex Winter, commented on the shield’s success, “This was one of those rare times when we did not assign a pre-auction estimate. We knew the collectors would have the final say and didn’t want to cast any expectations, but we also knew the potential for something special was definitely there. And that is what happened, a new world auction record for any Marvel movie prop was set. It’s one of the most amazing pieces Hake’s has ever offered in its 54-year history, and that is saying something considering the millions of items we have handled.” “From the moment we had

Captain America’s “hero-prop” shield created by Marvel Studios senior prop master Russell Bobbitt and used by Chris Evans for close-up shots in the 2019 film “Avengers: Endgame” is in near-pristine condition and sold for $259,540, the highest price ever paid at auction for a Marvel movie prop. the shield in-hand, we promoted it everywhere, culminating with its inperson appearance at the Baltimore Comic Con, where it was the star of the show,” continued Winter. “From the day it went online, bids started coming in, but it was on the final day that it jumped some $150,000 before closing at the record price. The term ‘museum quality’ is sometimes overused, but in this case, it is deserved.”

The 1864 cotton portrait bandanna with image of bearded candidate Abraham Lincoln based on a J.C. Buttre engraving of a Mathew Brady photo sold for $35,695 against an estimate of $10,000-$20,000.

The Nov. 2 and 3 auction totaled $3.3 million and catapulted Hake’s 2021 gross to more than $10 million. Outstanding prices were achieved in all major categories of the company’s final cataloged sale of the year. Original comic art was led by the pen-and-ink Mickey Mouse daily comic strip panel art created by Floyd Gottfredson (pencils) and Earl Duvall (inks) for publication on Feb. 20, 1931. The coveted five-panel strip from the “Mickey Mouse vs. Kat Nipp” storyline came directly from the Duvall Estate and sold within estimate for $45,430. Collectors of vintage “Star Wars” action figures and other toys showed up with “the force” to vie for a tempting selection offered on day two. The category’s top-lots honors were shared by two entries that each sold for $42,834. One of them was a “Star Wars” Millennium Falcon spaceship from Kenner’s 1979 “Star Wars” toyline, AFA-graded 80-plus NM and housed in an encapsulated box, while the other was one of few known carded examples of a 3.75-inch-tall action figure of Luke Skywalker with a double-telescoping lightsaber in an unpunched 12 Back-A blister card Continued on page 2

Comic books proved their rock-solid strength in the marketplace. A CGC-graded 6.0 Fine copy of the November 1961 Silver Age classic “Fantastic Four” #1, significant both for its debut of Marvel’s first superhero team and the origin/first appearance of Mole Man, sold within estimate for $37,269, while a very rare investment-grade production from EC Comics, the “Tales of Terror” 1953 Annual #3, displayed astonishing condition and was CGC-graded 9.6 NM-plus. Its selling price of $27,258 was on target with the pre-sale estimate. Two extreme rarities dominated the impressive selection of political memorabilia. An 1864 cotton portrait

bandanna with the image of bearded candidate Abraham Lincoln (based on a J.C. Buttre engraving of a Mathew Brady photo) sold for $35,695, while a 1904 stone-lithographed presidential/vice-presidential jugate poster touting candidates Eugene Debs and Ben Hanford, boasting superb graphics and high-quality color, rose to $29,884. Each of the lots had been estimated at $10,000-$20,000. “Our office has been buzzing with excitement since the conclusion of our November sale, and we’re ready to offer more film and TV props of this caliber next year,” concluded Winter. “Some amazing collectibles have already been consigned for our 2022 Premier Auctions series, so stay tuned!” All prices quoted in this report are inclusive of an 18percent buyer’s premium. Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

Frazer Antiques

This Week: My Turn

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Colonial Williamsburg Continued from page 1

“The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg seek to tell a broad and inclusive story of early American culture through the study and display of objects made and used by all the peoples of what is now the United States,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the foundation’s chief curator and vice president for museums, preservation, and historic resources. “At the institution’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, American Indian pottery, basketry, and textiles will help us to share the contributions of indigenous peoples. This chief’s blanket comes as a major contribution to that effort.” For generations, anonymous Navajo women working on hand looms created brilliantly colored, boldly designed pictorial blankets and rugs as was their longstanding cultural and artistic tradition. The earliest of Navajo weavings were blankets to be worn, known as “chief blankets,” made with a simple, horizontally striped and banded design and format. The weavers adapted and modified their work from the world around them and created an art form that is uniquely theirs and provides insight into the Navajo culture at the turn of the 19th century. As the chief blankets were made for wear, many did not survive. This example is a rectangular weaving of one panel produced in native handspun wool and raveled wool in salmon (aniline dye), blue

(indigo dye) and the natural wool colors of brown and white. The pattern from the top consists of a stripe of salmon with a blue terraced design followed by a stripe of white, alternating stripes of brown and white form the body of the blanket with another stripe of salmon with blue terraced design in the middle and at the bottom. behavior turns off a lot of people, especially in an America where we are all sensitized to the behaviors of others. Training is critical in every industry, including customer service in antiques malls. Perhaps it’s time that some of these malls learned that lesson.

rent. It’s a common and known practice. What it also means is that many of these folks have little to no understanding of security practice. They are aware of the issues with theft, but their solution is to pretend to be security and follow shoppers. What they often don’t realize is that their assumptions of guilty parties, families with children or prior cash paying customers are not always accurate. In fact, I would venture to say that the real targets are those individuals who carefully stalk and plan their thefts. I have wanted to go back to the co-op and ask them what they planned to do with my picture and how they thought this would help them solve their problems. Cameras, booths with a good line of sight, and staff who are trained are going to dissuade more shoplifters than wellintentioned amateurs. So what is the moral of the story? The mall has lost a good customer. I am sure they would argue that their security is worth more than a customer. But this kind of

R078714

One of my frequent topics over the years has been the amateur security efforts that many antiques co-ops employ. As a father of two daughters who would go antiquing with me as children, I always found it irritating to have the mall staff following us as we went through. With the kids now grown, I thought I had reached a point where that was done, until last week. I had some extra time on my hands during the week and decided to stop at a local antiques mall located not far from my home. I had been in there about a month before and purchased a number of things with my family (requiring several boxes and bags). I figured I would do a quick

sweep of the mall to see if anything was new and be on my way. I waved as I entered and then began my sweep, working from the right side of the mall to the left. About halfway through, I realized I was being followed. It was almost comical at first, but then as I was down the aisle of locked showcases, I heard the unmistakable sound of a camera phone taking a picture. Looking up into the mirrored back of the case in front of me, I saw my picture was being taken by one of the shop employees. I should have accosted him, but I just walked out the door. Mall security has always been a challenge. I recall when my mother and I were in malls in Carlisle and Hershey back in the 1980s, and we saw a certain number of things that got shoplifted. The malls then, like today, generally do not employ paid and highly trained staff. Instead, many of the people working at the mall are booth dealers who are performing sweat equity rather than paying all or part of their booth

Beginning Nov. 26, The Museum Will Be Open Seven Days A Week The Brandywine River Museum of Art is pleased to announce it will reopen to the public on Friday, Nov. 26, with the return of the Brandywine Railroad holiday train display and highlights from the permanent collection. The Brandywine has been temporarily closed to the public since Sept. 1, after the remnants of Hurricane Ida brought historic flooding to Chadds Ford and across the Brandywine’s 15-acre campus. While all of the art in the galleries at the Brandywine River Museum of Art was safe and unharmed by the storm, the museum’s lowest level, containing a lecture room, classroom, offices and more, had significant flood damage, in addition to 10 other buildings on the property. Beginning Nov. 26, the museum will be open seven days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed on Christmas day), with the Brandywine’s iconic O-gauge model train display on view through Jan. 9. A holiday favorite since 1972, the Brandywine Railroad offers something for everyone with its dazzling array of both toy and scale model trains

Strand. “I have really enjoyed working with the board of trustees and the staff over the past several months. The trustees, staff, and our members are a community that is very dedicated to Winterthur’s success. What they want most is to share this wonderful place with our friends and neighbors, and that is an exciting and energizing challenge.” Strand has enjoyed a long career in horticulture outreach, education, and management. Prior to joining Winterthur, he worked as director of Green Spring Gardens in Fairfax County, Va., from 1998 to 2005, managing its continuing evolution from a private property to a public garden and historic site, and as outreach horticulturist at The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University from 1993 to 1998. Strand earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Population, and Organismic Biology from the University of Colorado in 1989 and a master’s degree in Public Horticulture Administration with a certificate in Museum Studies through the Longwood Graduate Program Fellowship of the University of Delaware in 1992. “The Covid-19 pandemic, recent storm damage on the estate, shifting tastes, changes in school visits, and new technologies all present challenges and opportunities,” noted Strand. He credits the Winterthur staff for their creativity in meeting challenges and embracing new audiences while remaining good stewards of the property and collection. “I am very proud of them, and because of them, I am incredibly optimistic about our future,” continued Strand.

made by Lionel, Williams, Atlas, Mike’s Train House, Kline and others. The display features trains running on 2,000 feet of track with more than 1,000 pieces, including locomotives, passenger and freight trains, and trolleys that pass through a small village, a farm, factories, and even a carnival and a drive-in movie theater. Interactive components are also incorporated into the display, operated by hands-free foot pedals that allow for further engagement.

Also returning, albeit in a limited capacity this year, will be the Brandywine’s whimsical critter ornaments decorating the holiday trees in the museum’s atrium and also available to purchase during the annual Holiday Critter Sale. Each year since 1971, these distinctive ornaments have been carefully handcrafted by a dedicated group of volunteers using only natural materials such as teasel, pinecones, acorns, eggshells, flowers and seed Continued on page 7

All of the ornaments that had been made for this year’s upcoming sale, over 8,200 new creations, were destroyed by floodwaters, including many decades of critter ornaments that have been highlights of the holiday display, some of which date back to the early 1980s. Speaking of Lindbergh, also in the sale is an FBI poster relating to the 1932 kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby, listing all the serial numbers of the bills. Lincoln White House China Set Records History Was Made During $2.1 Million Americana And Political Auction important murder in American history,” stated Curtis Lindner of Heritage. “Lincoln was one of the most popular and important presidents in the history of the country, and his assassination immediately became national news, international news. His impact on the country is difficult to quantify, as was the significance of his death.” The $100,000 reward was an enormous sum at the time, equating to roughly $1.6 million today. Half was designated for the arrest of Booth, “in addition to any reward offered by Municipal Authorities or State Executives,” while $25,000 was set for the apprehension of John H. Surratt (misspelled “Surrat”) and David C. Herold (misspelled “Harold”). Signed in print by Secretary of War Edwin M.

Stanton, this broadside is one of just a handful of copies known. Also eclipsing the $200,000 plateau was a George Washington, Pater Patriæ, the Holy Grail of GW inaugural buttons, which brought $212,500. One of the gems of the previousily mentioned Mahoney collection, a trove from which 31 lots sold in the auction, the button is the only portrait button in the accepted canon of George Washington inaugural buttons and has long been coveted by collectors of Washington

memorabilia. It may also be the earliest artifact that refers to Washington as the “Father of His Country” and is one of fewer than 10 examples remaining in existence. Presidential china, especially from Lincoln’s presidency, often is in high demand among top collectors, and this sale was no exception, as a rare White House China celery dish rode more than a dozen bids to a final price of $93,750, a record for Lincoln-era presidential china and nearly five times its pre-auction estimate.
