Using information gleaned from Henry Muhlenberg’s extensive journals and other family papers, the exhibit re-creates a tumultuous year that began with the arrival of Peter’s family - including a new baby and ambitious plans to update the house and its furnishings - and ended with the family patriarch’s death. This loan exhibition features more than 300 objects, including Muhlenberg family portraits, furniture, books, silver, and needlework. Highlights include an inlaid Pennsylvania German schrank made in 1765, a pair of chairs made for Henry Muhlenberg in 1763 by Leonard Kessler of Philadelphia, and a silver sugar urn made for Frederick Muhlenberg by Christian Wiltberger of Philadelphia. East Coast collectors of political buttons, badges, ribbons and related ephemera will meet in Titusville, N.J., on Saturday, April 29, to sell, trade and display memorabilia from campaigns throughout the nation’s history. This 14th annual gathering is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Titusville United Methodist Church. Attendees from multiple states may expect to see a wide variety of political items, ranging from 2016 presidential-campaign buttons promoting candidates Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders to items from former presidents such as Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama. The gathering will be hosted by the local chapter of the American Political Items Collectors (APIC) national nonprofit hobbyist association, dedicated to preserving political history.

“Our political memorabilia shows offer a great opportunity for young and old alike to collect buttons and other items from the heated 2016 presidential campaign, not to mention other campaigns - local, state or national - throughout American history,” according to Tony Lee, a Titusville resident and president of APIC’s Big Apple Chapter. “Most political items don’t survive the elections in which they were used, so to see an ‘I Like Ike’ apron or a Ronald Reagan cowboy hat or a clothing button

worn at George Washington’s inauguration and inscribed with ‘Long Live the President’ is a great experience for students of political history at any age.” The historic Titusville United Methodist Church is located at 7 Church Road at the corner of River Road (Route 29) and Church Road in Titusville, due south of Lambertville and due north of the state capital, Trenton. The button show will be held in the church’s Education Building. Ample free parking is available. Admission to the event will be $3 for each adult. Any child 12 years or younger will enter free of charge. To encourage a lifelong love of political history and collecting, each child will receive assorted buttons, free of charge, to start his or her own personal collection. Free appraisals will be offered for all political items brought in by members of the public. Members of the public also may bring items for auction, with a commission rate of 10 percent of the overall sale. A wide selection of baked goods and bottomless cups of hot coffee and tea will be offered for sale (with net food-sale proceeds benefiting the church and its ministries). For additional information, contact Tony Lee at 609-310-0817 or tonylee08560@gmail.com.

The anchor show of Vermont Antique Week is moving and getting renamed. The Riley Rink at Hunter Park Antique Show is moving to the Okemo Lodge, and the show will now be known as The Vermont Picker’s Market. The previous promoters lost the lease with Riley Rink, and a new set of promoters have taken over the reigns. Steven Sherhag and Kris Johnson felt it was important to keep the

The show will be held on Sunday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Okemo Lodge. There will be 40 dealers from around the country selling quality Americana, including furniture and folk art. other hint books that brought each and every game to life. The cost to manufacture most of these games was immense, as publishers spent a lot of money utilizing the new fullmotion video feature made possible by the increased storage size of the CD format. This meant game development costs would be a lot higher too, as a lot of the companies at this time employed actors and actresses to star in their games to help bring them to life. “Wing Commander was a popular outerspace shooter series that decided to go big budget with the release of “Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger. The game would star Mark Hamill (from “Star Wars fame) and well-known actor Malcolm McDowell, who told the story in a series of ingame cut scenes. Other hit games like “The 7th Guest and “Phantasmagoria used actors and actresses to tell the story in pieces as the player progressed through the game. Unfortunately, most of these games centered around simple point and click mechanics, and most hardcore gamers felt they lacked compelling game play. By the end of the decade, full-motion video would be reduced to nothing more than a gimmick to attract gamers who were more interested in watching a movie-like experience than playing a true game. Today, much like computer

games from the 1980s, computer games of the 1990s are not worth very much. Even some of the harder-to-find role playing games set in the Ultima universe can be found for much less than their original retail price, with few exceptions. The same can be said of best-selling games of the era like “Myst, “The 7th Guest, and “Doom 2. These games sell for only $10 to $20 or less, mint and complete in their original boxes. Computer games just don’t hold the collectible value that vintage video games do and even that has been overblown by the media, all too happy to report on pie in the sky sales that are usually never vetted. Still, computer game collectors of this era have access

The 1990s was one of the most exciting decades of electronic entertainment since the origins harking back to the 1970s. As the decade opened, three well-financed video game console manufacturers were battling it out for superiority in what would become known as the 16-bit console wars. Meanwhile, established companies like electronics pioneer Philips and Sony were eying the home video game market, while brand new buzzwords such as “multimedia and “CD-ROM were starting to gain traction. On the home computer front, Apple was dealt a devastating blow by the rise of DOSbased PC clones made possible by the dominance of Microsoft’s Windows Operating System. The latest and greatest state-of-the-art advancement at this time was the introduction of the CD (or compact disc) as a brand new format for storing data. Up until this point, personal computers used either 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch floppy disks. CDs, however, promised much greater storage capacity and were much cheaper to produce. This meant software manufacturers could utilize more memory to make advanced pieces of highend entertainment, giving rise to the use of full-motion video

in computer games. Games like “The 7th Guest and “Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger would become instant classics for their excellent use of movie-like cinematic effects, while home video game consoles would come under heavy criticism for what was perceived to be glorifying realistic violence in games like “Night Trap and “Mortal Kombat. Note that both these games are considered laughable compared to the realistic violence portrayed in today’s games. Because the PC was now the preferred platform for computer gamers and because home video game systems were still not up to par with higher-end machines of the era, a lot of memorable computer games were released in the 1990s. Some classics of this era include “Myst, “The 7th Guest, “Phantasmagoria, “TIE Fighter Vs. X-Wing, “Doom 2, and “Hexen. Some of these games were available only on the CD-ROM format, so computer gamers would have to shell out the hundreds of dollars needed to upgrade to a CD-ROM drive or buy a pricey new machine that already came with one pre-installed. Most of the games released from this era are glorious works of art that borrow a lot from their 1980s cousins. Called “big box games to today’s collectors, most computer games released in the 1990s were packaged in oversized boxes with manuals and

experiencing for these past few years. Computer games require expensive and often hard-to-find hardware. You cannot simply play most classic computer games on the computers of today. Most computer game enthusiasts recognize that achieving longtime financial gains from their collections is just not feasible in a world where Nintendo reigns and PlayStation and Xbox follow. This makes collecting classic computer games great for any true enthusiast who just wants to recapture part of their fleeting youths. After all, I fondly remember buying “The 7th Guest upon release and truly miss exploring the mansion of incredible mystery and blood chilling puzzles. In fact, I still hear the game’s antagonist, Mr. Stauff, whispering in my ear to avoid slipping in the fresh blood on the attic steps. Perhaps other gamers from this era do too? And that is what makes these games well worth collecting!

to deals that video gamers should be jealous of. Most of these popular games can be had factory-sealed and new for less than what they sold for at the time of their original release! This is in part due to the fact that duplication and over-production of the games in question caused retailers to have ample supplies going into the next decade. Meanwhile a lot of the game’s publishers continued to release the games for newer and more powerful computers as they became available. Even “Myst, one of the most popular and best selling titles of the decade can now be downloaded and played for free or close to it on almost any PC or MAC computer. Still, computer gamers looking for a blast from the past will find buying and collecting most games from this era cheap and affordable. Bertoia Auctions is branching out with a new series of sales designed expressly for live online and absentee bidding. Known as “Bertoia Basics, the auctions will offer collectors at all levels an additional way to buy fine toys, trains, banks, and doorstops using only real-time internet and absentee bidding methods. “The auctions will be held during the months that fall between our major sales. That way our customers can add to their collections year round and be assured they will still receive the same level of

gallery events, Bertoia Auctions’ staff members will be available to answer questions and provide detailed verbal condition reports by phone about any item in a Bertoia Basics sale. Also, all post-sale packing and shipping will be handled inhouse at Bertoia’s gallery. “The service customers receive will be exactly the same as with our major, multipleday, live-audience sales. Only the method of bidding will be different, as there will not be live gallery attendance, said Jeanne Bertoia.

Morphy Auctions’ April Premier Toys, Dolls, And Figural Cast-Iron Sale Set Japanese Robot And Space Toys Among Featured Categories Morphy Auctions is pleased to announce its April Toys, Dolls, and Figural CastIron Sale to be held on Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15. The bidding will start promptly at 9 a.m. each day. All lots from this auction are on display in Morphy’s Denver, Pa., auction gallery and available for preview now. Let’s start by dropping a dime on this sale’s worldclass selections of still and mechanical banks, with over 250 fine examples on offer. Bidders will undoubtedly

jump for joy over lot #195, a J. & E. Stevens cast iron girl skipping rope bank. When wound and released, the rope rotates, and the girl moves up and down while kicking her legs and turning her head from side to side. This very nice, clean example was previously in the Edwin Mosler collection and is estimated at $25,000-$35,000. Lot #122, a panorama bank also by J. & E. Stevens, is a sight for sore eyes and is estimated at $4,000-$6,000. It was designed by James Butler and patented on March 7, 1876; when a coin is inserted in the slot on the roof, the picture featured on display advances to the next one. And lot #268, a rare Kyser & Rex cast-iron “Mammy and Child” mechanical bank, is in good hands with its $3,000-$7,000 estimate. The examples of Japanese battery-operated space and robot toys on offer should send collectors into orbit. Two This J. & E. The second, lot #766, is also known as “The Lavender Robot.” They are estimated at $3,000$5,000 and $1,000-$3,000,

respectively. Lot #688, a Nomura “mobile space TV unit” with trailer travels with bump and go action; the TV on top features an illuminated, rotating space scene, and its trailer has a rotating antenna. It broadcasts a $2,000-$3,000

estimate. Lot #689, a Martian radar patrol by Daiya in beautiful, all-original condition with its original crisp box, is no longshot to meet its $1,200$1,800 estimate. And lot #768, a silver version of “Mr. Atomic Robot,” marketed by Cragstan, is a sterling favorite in this category. One of the most iconic of all 1950s robots ever produced, it is estimated at $2,000-$4,000. This sale also shoots for the stars with a number of very fine Japanese tin litho wind-up and friction space and robot toys. Lot #770, an Astro-Scout robot made by Yonezawa, is marked “3” on its chest and includes its original box. It is estimated at $4,000$8,000. And two unusual examples from ASC are out of this world. Rock Or Artifact? Quick Hints For Collectors By Mark Dziak The Northeastern United States is full of Native American history (and prehistory). Native people have lived here for well over 10,000 years and left an extremely rich legacy, both in stories and artifacts. Unfortunately, many people today have a poor understanding of this legacy. Worse, some people cling to misconceptions that make the actual history even cloudier. This lack of understanding becomes very clear when it comes to collecting Native American artifacts. I’ve been studying the archaeology of Pennsylvania for just about 10 years, and people often show me items they think might be artifacts. Other times, I see items purported to be artifacts for sale. Usually the people think their items are rare and valuable treasures. More othen than not, the items are just plain old rocks.

Here are some claims I’ve heard dozens of times, “This rock fits perfectly in my hand, so it must be an artifact.” Also, “This rock looks really weird, so it must be an artifact.” And, of course, “I know this rock is an artifact because my friend/neighbor/cousin said so.” It’s awkward having to deliver the bad news that a person’s precious relic is really just a regular stone. The truth deserves to be told, though, especially when it can save people from accepting misinformation or losing a bunch of money. The basic fact is this - very few rocks are artifacts. There are trillions of rocks on Earth. They come in all shapes and sizes. They have been worn and cracked and altered by nature over millions of years. Many look weird, and many will fit in your hand, but without any evidence, they are almost certainly not artifacts.

Whether stepping into an Oneida Indian council house, meeting 14-year-old free African-American James Forten aboard a privateer ship, or examining the 1773 volume “Poems on Various Subjects” by America’s first published black female poet, museum visitors will see the diversity of people and opinion of the nation’s founding. Washington’s Headquarters Tent A dedicated theater will house one of the most iconic surviving artifacts of the revolution - General Washington’s headquarters tent, which served as both his office and his sleeping quarters throughout much of the war. It was within the folds of this tent that key discussions and decisions were made that affected the outcome of the American Revolution. The tent will be presented as part of a multimedia presentation exploring Washington’s leadership. The Collection At the heart of the museum experience is visitors’ opportunity to engage with the museum’s rich collection of original historic artifacts. One of the premier collections of its kind, it includes several thousand objects from the period of the American Revolution, including a number of George Washington’s personal belongings, as well as an impressive assortment of period weaponry, soldiers’ and civilians’ personal accoutrements, fine art, and printed works and manuscripts. These “authentic witnesses” to the events of the American Revolution will illustrate the stories told in each of the core

exhibition’s galleries. Immersive Experiences Immersive experiences will plunge visitors into the action and include a gallery featuring a full-scale replica of Boston’s Liberty Tree, where the first stirrings of revolt were discussed and debated; the re-creation of an Oneida Indian Nation meeting house, where the tribe’s leaders debate whether to join the American cause; the Battlefield theater, where visitors are placed on the Continental Army’s front lines facing an attack by British soldiers; a view of Independence Hall in disarray during British occupation in Philadelphia; and a large-scale replica of an 18th-century privateer ship that visitors can board. An estimated two hours is suggested for touring the museum. Lunch is up to each individual on the trip. A restaurant is available at the museum, or attendees can go into Independence Mall for food or visit a restaurant in the area. The bus will depart to return to Mount Joy at 4 p.m. The cost of the trip is $50, which includes the morning program and refreshments, transportation, and museum admission. To make reservations, send a check to The Donegal Society, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, Pa., 17552. Reservations must be received by Friday, May 5. Please include an email address and phone number. To learn more, email Lisa Kuzdro, president of the Donegal Society, at lkuzdro@verizon.net.

The Donegal Society has announced it will host a field trip to the new Museum of the American Revolution on Saturday, May 20. The Museum of the American Revolution will open in the heart of historic Philadelphia on Wednesday, April 19, and will explore the dynamic story of the American Revolution using its rich collection of Revolutionary-era weapons, personal items, letters, diaries, and works of art. “The Mysterious Landscapes Of Hercules Segers” First U.S. Exhibition Devoted To Visionary 17th-Century Dutch Artist On View At The Met Hercules Segers (ca. 1589 to ca. 1638), the great Dutch experimental printmaker, created otherworldly landscapes of astonishing originality by using an extraordinary array of techniques that still puzzle scholars today. “The Mysterious Landscapes of Hercules Segers,” on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art through Sunday, May 21, is the first major exhibition in the United States devoted to the artist, who possessed one of the most fertile creative minds of his time. Although his name is not well-known today, Segers’s works were highly prized during his lifetime, and R e m b r a n d t (1606–69) owned eight of his paintings and a printing plate. Segers’ surviving works are extremely rare: only 10 impressions of his prints are in museums in the United States (one in The Met collection), and only 15

paintings have been attributed to the artist. “The Mysterious Landscapes of Hercules Segers” will feature a selection of these paintings, in addition to almost all of Segers’ prints in varying impressions. The Rijksmuseum, whose collection of Segers’ work is the largest in the world, is generously lending its entire holdings (74 prints, two oil sketches, and one painting) to the exhibition. Other European institutions, notably the British Museum and the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden, will lend important works that will allow The Met to highlight Segers’ remarkable printed oeuvre in a variety of stages, revealing the range of the artist’s experiments with the etching technique, along with his idiosyncratic use of materials. The exhibition is made possible by the Diane W. and James E. Burke Fund and The Schiff Continued on page 19

Hercules Segers’ (Dutch, ca. 1589 to ca. 1638) “The Mossy Tree,” ca. 1625-30, is a lift ground etching printed in green, on a light pink ground, colored with brush, a unique impression. It is from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, on loan from the City of Amsterdam, collection of Michiel Hinloopen (1619–1708), 1885.

Weegee (Arthur Fellig) offers glimpses into the lives of bygone New Yorkers with “Easter Sunday in Harlem,” 1940, and “Coney Island,” 1940 (est. $2,000 to $3,000 and est. $7,000 to $10,000, respectively). The breathtaking silver print “New York,” 1931, by Alfred Stieglitz, taken from his office window, is valued at $25,000 to $35,000. Further highlights include Lee Miller’s circa 1929-32 unique solarized portrait of critic and editor George Jean Nathan (est. $10,000 to $15,000), alongside Irving Penn’s 1947 portrait of Nathan with his colleague and collaborator, the great H.L. Mencken, valued at $7,000 to $10,000. The auction will be held Thursday, April 20, beginning at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Daile Kaplan at 212254-4710, ext. 21, or via email at dkaplan@swanngalleries.com.

On Thursday, April 20, Swann Galleries will hold a sale titled Images and Objects: Photographs and Photobooks, with selections exploring the many functions and purposes of the media since its inception. The top lot of the sale is expected to be “The Arctic Regions,” 1873, a large bound narrative of American artist William Bradford’s seven expeditions to the Arctic, illustrated with 141 mounted albumen photographs. Scenes include massive ice flows looming over his ship, Panther; nearly abstract views of icebergs; and portraits of indigenous people (Eskimeaux). The volume is expected to sell for $100,000 to $150,000. Eadweard Muybridge, another early master to use the nascent media for scientific purposes, will be represented in the sale by 60 plates from his magnum opus, “Animal Locomotion,” 1887. Subjects include women in motion, various exotic animals and a self-portrait by the

coach. This beautifully executed example, one of the alltime favorite horse-drawn toys, is estimated at $4,000$8,000. And the rubber truly hits the road with lot #905, a very rare German Nifty tin litho wind-up “Hi-Way Henry” automobile, estimated at $6,000-$9,000. This absolute rarity comes with its original box, which is decorated with a very nice paper label showing characters driving the automobile. Only two or three examples with original boxes are known to exist. Fine trains, doorstops, penny toys, marbles, holiday ephemera, Steiff animals, and dolls round out this comprehensive two-day auction. Of special note is a small but quality collection of 13 vintage Käthe Kruse lots. Lot #4,

antiquesandauctionnews.net an all cloth little girl with painted hair, molded and painted features, and a body with wide hips, is particularly appealing. She is estimated at $1,500-$2,500. “Our first toy sale of 2017 certainly offers collectors some amazing temptations. The selections of robot and space toys and mechanical and still banks are especially strong in this event. I must admit, as a collector, that the J. & E. books, legitimate websites, and well-respected collectors. Joining up with an archaeological group is a great option. The Frances Dorrance Society, based near Wilkes-Barre, Pa., is a chapter of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology that runs a fascinating ongoing archaeological dig that’s open to the public. The Indian Artifact Collectors Association of the Northeast (IACANE) is another great place to start. This group runs shows several times per year where individuals can talk with well-credentialed and, generally, very friendly and

welcoming experts. Stick to good sources, and you’ll get good information. Do varied research, and learn all you can. You’ll quickly train your eyes and brain to pick out true artifacts. Most importantly, keep an open mind. Don’t worry about being proven wrong. I certainly have been many times, and it always provides a lesson. At the very worst, maybe your latest discovery isn’t a true artifact. But so what? It’s still a cool rock. It can hold a spot in your collection until you find a real artifact to study and treasure.

According to Morphy’s experts, it is “possibly one of the best examples found for this age of toy.” Lot #1019, a circa 1926-30 pressed steel, closed cab Buddy L “ice delivery” truck, just may send shivers down the spines of collectors. It has its original sliding canvas cover and paint and decals and is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.
