Historical Society Acquires Textile Thanks To Fundraising Effort

On Jan. 25, Dana Auctions of Princeton, N.J., held its Antique and Vintage Quilt & Textile Auction, featuring an exceptional quilt that captivated both collectors and historians. The quilt, a 1913 Pennsylvania Signature Quilt in the Star of Bethlehem pattern, sold for $6,150, including the buyer’s premium.
This remarkable textile, crafted
by the Zwingli YP Society of Christ Reformed Church in Jefferson, (York County) Pa., is a masterpiece of community history. The quilt features 700 embroidered name inscriptions, including the Rev. and Mrs. N.W. Sechler, the Henry family, and others such as Stauffer, Dill, Menges, Wehrly, Myers, and Hartman. It was consigned by the estate of Sharon Stark, a longtime antique textile dealer from Berks County, Pa., whose handwritten
tag noted the name “Henry Hartman, York Co.,” a name also found among the quilt’s inscriptions.

Earlier in January, Dana Balsamo, owner of Dana Auctions, showcased the quilt during a presentation at the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA)
Conference in Harrisburg. The session focused on how to evaluate and market quilts for auction, and the quilt’s historical significance became a centerpiece of discussion. Several auctioneers in attendance recognized names on the quilt, sparking excitement when Charlie Wehrly of Wehrly’s Auction House identified his grandparents’ names among the inscriptions.

Wehrly, Shawn Carbaugh, and Jamie Shearer, resolved to bring the quilt back to Jefferson, Pa. Carbaugh led a spirited fundraising effort over the next two weeks to raise the necessary funds for the purchase. His efforts paid off, and the quilt was ultimately acquired by the Codorus Valley Area Historical Society. Historical Connections and Community Impact Thomas Yingling, representing the historical society, drove to Princeton to collect the quilt following the auction. During his conversation with Balsamo, Yingling shared his findings about the quilt’s historical context. This Week: I Never Met A Book

They are to be read, they are to be collected, then are to decorate our homes. And for the longest time, they have been very much undesirable to many in the public. I know this sentence is harsh, but look at the former decline of new and used bookstores, in particular to the latter,
they were well on their way to becoming extinct. Blame for the decline of interest in books fell to the influence of online reading, the overall decline of the antiques world, and the minimalism (maybe the worst word in the English language) of the Millennial generation. And yet, I have been reading articles over the last year and a half that some of the nearly extinct big chain bookstores are expanding. Similarly, I patronize several used bookstores in Philadelphia and Lambertville and have seen the volume of customers, particularly Gen Z, on the rise significantly. What is going on?
I think the notion of holding a paper book and reading it in your hands remains innately something that gives humans great pleasure. I say this in particular for those who love books from the 18th century. Not only is there a tactile aspect to a 1700s, book but there is a distinct smell that is unique to books of that era that you cannot find in any bottle, spray or container. It speaks to us at a very visceral level.
Second is that in terms
of money spent, I still argue that books are a great value. Yes, there are books that I have, after years of therapy to work through this, thrown out because they are just terrible. In fact, occasionally I make the mistake of trying to read a bad book a second time only to discover that it really, really was terrible. Those books are the exception, and I still find myself returning to books that I enjoyed in the past. This is a contrary notion to our modern movie-driven world where we watch it and then move on to the next. A book, especially, a well-written one, will peel itself like an onion over time, revealing new information.
Finally, and this is true with used and rare books, there is a financial value to many of these. I say this with some trepidation. I recall when I moved from Pennsylvania to New Mexico and wanted to sell a small but nice collection of 18th century Presbyterian imprints. Every bookseller I talked to said that I should give the books to a school or just throw them away as they had little interest. It is painful now as it was then to hear
that. But, I also look at some of the prices that my friends who are booksellers are charging for books and what they are getting for those books online, and I realize that not all books should go to the dumpster.
So this winter, go to the bookstore (new or used) and grab some reading material. Get ahead of the trend and enjoy a real honest book!
“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

New Exhibit On View “Robert Frank And Todd Webb: Across America, 1955” Brandywine Museum Of Art Showcases Famous Photography
Coming to the Brandywine Museum of Art is “Robert Frank & Todd Webb: Across America, 1955” featuring a series of black-andwhite photographs depicting the journeys of two artists, who each captured singular views of America in 1955. During that year, Robert Frank and Todd Webb both received prestigious fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation for projects in which they would photograph the United States on cross-country road trips.
This special exhibition brings together for the first time over 100 photographs that came from both 1955 projects, showcasing how the artists put their own unique stamp on their ambitious assignments. “Across America” will run until Sunday, May 11, at the Brandywine, the final venue for this traveling exhibition.
Organized by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), “Across America” reveals the unvarnished state of American life at mid-century shown through the unique lens and perspectives of Robert Frank (1924-2019) and Todd Webb (1905-2000). By 1955, both artists were established and well connected but looking to grow beyond commercial photography. At 30 years old, Frank had a growing reputation as a photographer and had achieved success contributing commissioned photographs to magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Fortune, Life, and Look. Prior to this project, he had traveled throughout Europe and South America, honing his eye and refining his art. At 49 years old, Webb had reached the top of the photographic field, and his work had been featured in several exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art. With this 1955 project, he wanted to challenge himself, free of commercial constraints.
As they set out on their respective cross-country journeys, Webb wished to “depict vanishing Americana and what is taking place,” while Swiss-born Frank stated his project would be driven by “what one naturalized American finds to see in the United States that signifies the kind of civilization born here and spreading elsewhere.” Webb’s tender, carefully composed images celebrated the individual
oddities of the American way of life, whereas the grainy, off-kilter style of Frank’s images matched his examination of the darker side of America. Frank’s resulting work became a landmark text in the history of photography, and Webb’s proj -
surveys, Frank and Webb chose different methods of travel, different photographic approaches and styles, and were interested in different aspects of American culture. While neither artist found the exact vision of America they expected,

“This exhibition is a fascinating look at two artists striving to create what was in effect a portrait of America during their cross-country travels,” said Thomas Padon, the James H. Duff Director of the Brandywine Museum of Art. Padon added, “The photographs taken by Frank on his trip remain among the most iconic in American photography, and the exhibition provides the rich context in which they were made. Because the location of the Todd Webb archives were unknown for decades, this exhibition is also the first opportunity to view the remarkable photographs he took that pivotal year.”

the truth they encountered was irreconcilable with the idealized American image from popular media. Yet, in the distance between the myth and reality, both men found fertile ground for their art.
Frank’s shot-from-thehip works captured movement with selected focus, some shot from the window of his moving car. With his bold, confrontational style of photography, Frank critiqued America’s social divisions and economic inequalities while depicting its people with grace and compassion. The exhibition features both published and unpublished works from Frank’s celebrated 1958 book, “The Americans.” Meanwhile, Webb’s never-before-seen images are characterized by their focused stillness. Choosing to walk, boat and bike his way across the country, Webb’s pedestrian pace matched his measured method of image capture. His photographs revealed, often humorously, the empty promises behind American consumerism. While their journeys were different, in some instances, Frank’s and Webb’s images were strikingly similar, both men photographed bars, cowboys, crowds, roadside attractions, parades, and small towns. These similarities in subject matter can be traced to popular cultural trends and shared ideologies. Both men engaged in projects that challenged the idealism of the “American Roadtrip” and the mythology of American prosperity as depicted in popular culture. Examples in the exhibition of photographs by the two artists created in the same location further reveal the photographers’ diverse perspectives and approaches. “It’s eye-opening to put these projects side-by-side for the first time,” noted exhibition organizer Lisa Volpe, MFAH Curator of Photography. “It reveals the humanity in Webb’s work, and the underrecognized, but profound hope in Frank’s

Two 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle baseball cards, rare examples but with condition issues, still combined to bring $88,500 in an online-only Pre1980 Sports Cards & Memorabilia Auction held Jan. 25 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.

One of the Mantles had a grade of PSA 1.5 Fair and carried a pre-sale estimate of $30,000$40,000. It sold for $50,150. The other card had an even lesser grade, PSA 1 Poor, but bidders blasted through the $15,000$20,000 estimate for a final selling price of $38,350. The prices underscored the rarity
and popularity of that particular card as well as the Topps 1952 set overall.
“The inaugural Sports Auction proved that the market for pre-1980 sports cards is stronger than ever, with many estimates being met and even exceeded for top lots,” said Ben Pernfuss, Miller & Miller’s consignment director for the sale.
Household names like Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig captured the spotlight and drove impressive bidding on unique signed baseballs, found footage and iconic cards. A total of 259 lots, all sports-related, with many rare
and highly collectible examples, came up for bid. “The enthusiasm for these legendary athletes was palpable,” continued Pernfuss, “resulting in spirited bidding and strong results. Overall, the sale showcased the continued strength and passion of collectors in this vibrant market.” The total gross was 448,252. A total of 254 online bidders registered through LiveAuctioneers.com and the Miller & Miller website (MillerandMillerAuctions.com).

Kimmel’s love of history started when he was a high school student in Queens, N.Y.
“I read a lot of history books,” he says, “and I became interested in the election process.”
Kimmel’s interest in the electoral process grew into a passion on a family trip to New Mexico. After two days visiting art galleries, Kimmel says, “I became bored and wandered off. I found a shop with old political buttons and was immediately drawn to the histor

Proprietors, Gary Taylor & The late Bob Camara (2012) met when Gary was just 21 years old and were together for 42 years! Bob worked in the sheet metal business & Gary in Men’s Clothing in Manchester, NH. In 1973 they founded the original shop, Bloomin’ Antiques in Fitzwilliam, NH. Gary and Bob bought a home in Richmond that was built in 1790 and was completely original. They traveled to & from Fitzwilliam daily to work in the shop. Bob was the face of the shop greeting & working with customers while Gary refinished and repaired items in the basement. They expanded the shop twice before eventually moving to their current location on the square in Fitzwilliam. That home was one where Gary & Bob shopped frequently, buying antiques and visiting with the homeowners who eventually asked if they’d be interested in purchasing it. They were thrilled and in 1979/80 moved in making their home/ workplace all in one space! Bloomin Antiques was very popular and had a waiting list of over 100 dealers from all over New England that wanted to be participants in the shop. At maximum capacity, they had almost 50 dealers and kept the shop very full! Gary and Bob stayed very busy with the shop and founded the original “Tailgate”. They traveled all over the east coast collecting and buying for the shop & their personal collections. Gary loved folk art paintings on objects and currently has several hundred in his home and at one time had over 500 pcs! (coming to auction in the late spring!) He also loved Italian pottery & stick spatterware. Bob’s forte was books, aluminum & evolved into liking many of the same things as Gary. However, their buying wasn’t limited to those categories as they believed it was important to have a great variety to get people through the door. And a great variety they amassed!
