Two Shows In Bath, Pa.

Both Take Place First Weekend In March

The Governor Wolf Historical Society (GWHS) is set to celebrate its 16th Annual Antiques Show and the Chestnut Street Antiques Show its 10th year, both in the historic town of Bath, Pa. The former will be Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2. The latter, just one day on Saturday, March 1. Located a few miles apart, the shows exhibiting dealers tell all. Katie Hallenborg said she loved the setting. Dorene Tenges remarked it is in a perfect location and has a great atmosphere, while Joel Whitehouse enjoys the open hearth cooking.

One of the unique features about the GWHS show is the period room settings that the dealers create in the restored 1785 Ralston-McKeen House. A cut-stone, center hall home, the

Ralston McKeen House with six corner fireplaces is the perfect backdrop for selling 18th and 19th century antiques. An added bonus is the hearth cooking demonstrations in the tavern room. Favorites are potato pie and rosemary cake. They are done with antique hearth cooking implements by GWHS members in the large walk-in fireplace. Not sure what certain antique kitchen tools were meant for? This is the place to ask and see them in action. The volunteers have compiled a small cookbook of favorite Colonial era recipes, which is available for purchase.

On the GWHS site there are two other historic buildings where antiques dealers will be set up selling their merchandise: the 1785 Wolf Academy, birthplace of public education for all boys and girls in Pennsylvania, and the Monocacy

Unassuming Book Reveals Historic Manuscript

The Jones Declaration Of Independence Sells For Millions

Who said discoveries are no longer found? A recentlydiscovered manuscript of the Declaration of Independence written in the hand of Samuel Jones of New York, who is credited with securing New York’s ratification of the United States Constitution by breaking the impasse over the inclusion of a bill of rights, ca. 1788, was found in a plain blue book at a library book sale.

Discovered by a collector who purchased an incomplete set of 18th-century Laws of New York, the plain book, worth approximately $100 and rebound in unattractive blue Buckram fabric

from the 1950s, was unremarkable at first glance. Unbeknownst to the buyer at the time of purchase, the volume later turned out to contain the actual handwritten manuscript of the Declaration of Independence penned by Samuel Jones (1734-1819).

This is the first time a manuscript version of the Declaration written in the hand of an important participant in the nation’s founding has ever appeared at auction, and the only one known to be held privately. Jones penned the Declaration as it appears within the text of what stands as the earliest complete manuscript

of the 1777 New York State Constitution, the only state constitution to quote the Declaration’s text in full. Jones likely penned this manuscript in 1788 for use in the New York Ratification Convention, and it may have been intended to play a similar role that has been suggested for the recently-discovered Sussex Declaration.

The manuscript, with numerous marginal notations in Jones’ hand, was likely brought to the Constitutional Convention in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. by Jones. The volume, bound previously and then rebound about 70 years ago, indicates “Printed by John Holt,

Printer to the State, 1782.” The watermarks of the paper date to 1787 and correspond with the time of the New York Constitutional Convention. Jones penned the Declaration as it appears within the text of what stands as the earliest complete manuscript of the 1777 New York State Constitution.

The detailed authentication process was conducted by Peter Klarnet at Christie’s with additional analysis by John P. Kaminski, a renowned Constitutional scholar and director of the Study of the American Constitution at the University of Wisconsin.

Hake’s Debut Sale Of Jeff Jacob Collection Makes History

Sale Is First Action-Figure-Specific Auction To Break Million-Dollar Mark

Hake’s debut sale of “Star Wars” and other action figures and prototypes from the celebrated Jeff Jacob collection crushed all expectations on Jan. 22 as it soared to a $1.45 million finish. The initial offering of 435 lots from Jacob’s 33-year collection launched a multi-part series of online sales scheduled for 2025 and, in so doing, achieved a significant milestone. It marked the first time an auction devoted exclusively to action figures broke the million-dollar mark.

“When we landed Jeff’s collection, we knew we definitely had something special, but we also sensed it could end up being legendary. Early on, there was so much excitement about the auction that we actually went live with the catalog a week earlier than planned. From the getgo, bidders ‘showed up’ and bid early and often. We had hopes of cracking one million but went well beyond that. And as we’ve seen so many times before, it was the collectors who had the final say about market value. Scores of new world auction records were set,” reported a jubilant Alex Winter, president of Hake’s Auctions.

Nearly all figures,

A “Star Wars” (1978) DoubleTelescoping Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi 12 Back-A action figure, AFA 85 NM+, SKU on footer, one of only two carded Double-Telescoping specimens of its type known to exist in this high grade, sold for $105,182, a world auction record for any Double-Telescoping Ben Kenobi action figure.

playsets, vehicles and other items in the collection were AFA-graded and served as a shining testament to Jacob’s decades-long mission to upgrade his holdings to the maximum possible level. Most pieces were high grade, and some were the absolute highest-graded specimens of their type, per the AFA Population Report. In this first session, 47 pieces were identified as being in the single highest grade known, with none graded higher.

As predicted, the auction’s top-selling lot was a “Star Wars” (1978) Double-Telescoping Ben (ObiWan) Kenobi 12 Back-A action figure, AFA-graded 85 NM+, with a SKU on its footer. Only two carded Double-Telescoping examples of this figure are known to exist in such a high grade, and of those two, the one offered by Hake’s was the first to appear at auction. Entered with no specified estimate and requiring an opening bid of $50,000, the figure sold for $105,182, a world auction record for any Double-Telescoping Ben Kenobi.

Another top prize was a “Star Wars” (1978) ArtooDetoo (R2-D2) 12 Back-A Kenner action figure, AFAgraded 85 NM+. Distinctive for its dark-blue dome and SKU on the card’s footer, this figure is one of only six examples known in its grade, with no other graded higher in the current AFA Population Report. It sold for $38,940 against an estimate of $5,000-$10,000, a world auction record for any R2-D2 figure.

There were great expectations for a “Star Wars: The Power Of The Force” (1984) complete base set of 62 pressed aluminum coins, but how much it might sell for was subject to speculation, since its auction appearance was quite possibly the first time a complete collection of its type had ever been publicly offered as a whole. Manufactured by Kenner and initially featured in a “Star

The “Thundercats” (1986) Lion-O & Snarf Series 2/14 Back blister card with 7-inch-tall LJN action figure (orange-hair variety) with Battle-Matic Action, Sword of Omens, “Secret Power Ring” that illuminates figure’s eyes, plus 2.75-inch-tall Snarf companion figure, AFAgraded 80 NM, one of five in that grade, with none higher, according to current AFA Population Report, brought $9,423, a world auction record for this figure.

The “Star Wars” (1979) Hero Set 3-Pack, Series 2, AFA-graded 85 NM+, only four examples graded higher, according to AFA Population Report, sold for $18,691, a world auction record in this grade.

Eye On The Market

In today’s marketplace, it is more evident than ever, southeastern Pennsylvania is the heartland. Not to gloss over the challenges the antiques industry has, it’s important to remember this region remains where the action is. Just ask anyone who lives in other parts of the country where shops, shows and sales are few and far

between. Here is a short look at the upcoming month of March and a number of newsworthy shows. It is just a sampling; check out the paper’s show and sale calendar for a fuller list of upcoming events.

To start the month, the one-day 10th annual Chestnut Street Antique Show and Sale in historic Bath, Pa., will take place on Saturday, March 1. On Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2, the Governor Wolf Historical Society is hosting its 16th Annual Antiques Show and Sale, also in Bath, Pa.

The following weekend, the Hudson Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 8 and 9, in Canfield, Ohio. Promoter Steve Sherhag assembled more than 50 quality antiques dealers for this annual event, which many consider the best show in the state of Ohio. Also on March 8 and 9, the RSG Antiques

Show will be held on the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds in Bloomsburg, Pa.

A new show is being held on Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15, run by Jerry Frey in Oaks, Pa. Titled “The Antique and Collector Fair,” this show at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center was once the “Kimberton Show.”

“I bought the show, and we’re starting with this one, but there is a good chance it will run twice a year, the other time being in late October,” noted Frey in a phone interview. The old Kimberton show had used various venue sites and floundered, according to more than one previous dealer who did the show. Frey brings an encouraging level of experience and professionalism and is willing to invest in the new venture. Also that weekend, Bob Conrad will run his oneday New Oxford Show slated for Sunday, March 16, at the heated social club pavilion building in New Oxford, Pa.

This show is known for good finds and dealer-friendly buying.

The Elverson Antiques Show and Sale is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, March 22 and 23, at the Honey Brook Elementary School in Honey Brook, Pa. There is tremendous energy behind this show, and it is a popular one with both new and advanced show goers.

Not a show, but to close out the month, John Hess of the Hess Auction Group, owner of the Conestoga Auction Co., in Manheim, Pa., is having a two-day estate sale for the late Ron Hammer on Friday and Saturday, March 28 and 29.

Again, this is just a few events going on in March and is meant to give an overview and show it is an exciting time to be active in the field of Pennsylvania decorative arts. The show and sale calendar has much more. Thanks for supporting Antiques & Auction News.

Old West Auction Was A Bidders’ Battleground

White Bull’s Historic Lakota Storybook Charged To $270,600

Morphy’s Jan. 24 auction of Western and Native American art, relics and memorabilia held at the Westgate Casino & Resort in Las Vegas, Nev., drew an engaged roomful of bidders, each intent on claiming a piece of authentic cowboy history. In the end, the annual specialty event rounded up a robust $1.9 million, with top-lot honors going to a unique and historically important book documenting Lakota Sioux tribal history. Created and maintained by Chief Sitting Bull’s nephew White Bull (1849-1947), the

162-page historical ledger and storybook was specifically intended to document Indian battles in the West. Consisting of 120 narrative pages, 33 illustrated color pages, and 28 additional pages that were either blank or faced drawings, the ledger was both visual and informative. “What made it especially unique was that it was a personal and original biographical account of battles, coups, combats and even included winter population counts of the Sioux,” said Dan Morphy, president of Morphy Auctions. “White Bull claimed to have killed General Custer, which may or may not have been true, but the book does record what appears to be his fight with Custer, in addition to many other battles in which he

was personally involved.”

Mike Cowdrey, a respected author of books on Native American topics, observed that, in terms of Lakota historiography, White Bull’s ledger/ storybook is “comparable in importance to the diaries of Thomas Jefferson, a unique and irreplaceable resource.” Its importance certainly did not go unnoticed, as it was bid competitively to $270,600, more than twice its high estimate.

the 1.5-inch coins was graded AFA 85 NM+ and originally had been obtained from a former Kenner employee. Against an estimate of $20,000-$35,000, the set rang the register at

$42,536, a world auction record for a graded coin set of its type.

An interesting lot, here is a “Star Wars: The Power Of The Force” (1984) complete base set of 62 pressed aluminum coins, each 1.5 inch diameter, made by Kenner and initially offered in a “Star Wars” mailaway offer; later issued in carded format with Kenner’s “Power Of The Force action” figures. Each coin graded AFA 85 NM+, originally obtained directly from former Kenner employee, they went for $42,536, a world auction record for a graded coin set of this type.

Jeff Jacob’s pop-culture trove includes more than 3,000 pieces that span the action-figure universe. With 1970s “Star Wars” characters solidly at its base, the collection also incorporates the best of several other toy lines, including GI Joes, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Masters of the Universe, and others.

Among the “Joes” was a Hasbro GI Joe (1982) Cobra Missile Command Headquarters Series 1 playset with three 3.75inch Straight-Arm action figures on red blister cards with peach file cards on the reverse. A Sears exclusive, this set was AFA-graded 75+ Q-Ex+/NM, making it the highest-graded

A “Star Wars” (1978) ArtooDetoo (R2-D2) 12 Back-A Kenner action figure, AFAgraded 85 NM+, notable for dark-blue dome and SKU on footer, one of only six examples in this grade, with no other graded higher in current AFA Population Report, sold for $38,940, setting a world auction record for any R2-D2 figure.

A Hasbro “Transformers” (1984) Series 1 Megatron (Decepticon Leader), AFA 80 NM, mint in sealed box, among the most desirable Series 1 Transformers toys, with only two examples in AFA 80 grade, according to current AFA Population Report, sold for $41,301 for a world auction record for this toy in this grade.

This “Star Wars” (1978) Early Bird Mail-Away Kit with figures including a Double-Telescoping Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and R2-D2, AFA-graded 85 NM+, only three such kits are known to have received a higher grade, sold near its high estimate for $32,450, a world auction record for any Star Wars kit.

The Hasbro “G.I. Joe” (1982) Cobra Missile Command Headquarters Series 1 playset with three 3.75-inch StraightArm action figures on red blister cards, peach file cards on back, AFA-graded 75+ Q-Ex+/NM, highest-graded and only-known example, according to current AFA Population Report, sold for $14,673, a world auction record for this type of playset in this grade.

A boxed “Star Wars” (1978) Cantina Adventure Set containing bagged action figures of elusive blue-version Snaggletooth, Greedo, Hammerhead, and Walrus Man, plus mailer boxes for figures, sealed bag of pegs, cardboard backdrop, cardboard inserts, in-package catalogs and assembly instructions, one of only five examples graded AFA 85 NM+, according to current AFA Population Report, none known in a higher grade, realized $27,258. This is a world auction record overall.

At a small country sale held at Grassmyer’s Warehouse in McVeytown, Pa., an antique Soap Hollow paint-decorated blanket chest brought a strong $46,000 on Jan. 25. Auctioneer Ron Grassmyer of Lewistown does not charge a buyer’s premium. Dated “1851” with initials, the lifttop chest with two drawers came from a local Belleville home, whose owner is now in a nursing home. It didn’t travel far, as the buyer also resides in Belleville.

The Kishacoquillas Valley of Mifflin County, commonly called “Big Valley,” is a rural agricultural region. Over generations, it isn’t uncommon to have Soap Hollow furniture, which was made further west, migrate into the area.

Soap Hollow furniture was made between 1830-1890 (some later dates) in Somerset County, Pa., The term reportedly was coined from the soft brown soap produced throughout the region, which lies in a hollow. This western Pennsylvania enclave of Mennonite cabinetmakers worked

mostly north of Davidsville in Conemaugh Township, not far from Johnstown. Today, the material is valued as folk art for its forms and paint-decorated surfaces. The primary items produced were lift-top blanket chests and chest of drawers. Eight cabinetmakers are associated with what we call the Soap Hollow School of cottage craftsmen. The chest at Grassmyer’s had a typical color palette, stencil decoration, initials of the owner and date, and cut-out designs between drawers and stood on bracket feet. This body of work represents a material culture rooted in both Germanic and Neoclassical traditions. To read background

history into the Soap Hollow, see Karl Pass, “Antiques & Auction News” Vol. 44, No. 19, May 10, 2013 or, Charles Muller’s book ,”Soap Hollow, the Furniture and its Makers” (2002).

Declaration Gehman

At the New York convention in Poughkeepsie, where they were considering ratifying the Constitution, Jones broke the impasse about whether a bill of rights should be added. It was Jones who proposed removing the words “on condition that” a listing of rights would be added and proposed to insert the words “in full confidence that” a listing of rights would be added; Jones won that battle by two votes, which assured both the success of the Constitution as well as the later addition of the Bill of Rights.

“This document played a key role in shaping the nation’s founding principles and is the only privately held 18th-century manuscript of the Declaration of Independence according to the census maintained by Harvard University’s Declaration Resource Project. It is a unique artifact tied directly to the establishment of the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution, and this auction marks the first time a manuscript of the Declaration by such a significant figure has ever been available. Its historical importance and scarcity make it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for collectors and institutions alike,” states Peter Klarnet. It was consigned to Christie’s, given an estimate of $2,000,000$3,000,000, and realized $2,470,000 on Jan. 24.

The provenance as stated by Christie’s is Samuel Jones (1734-1819) - his son, David S. Jones (1777-1848, ownership signature on title page of Laws of New-York) - Presented to the New York Law Institute, Jan. 19, 1887, by Charles W. Sloane (d. 1929, note on title page of Laws of New-York) - deaccession.

original condition had been custom-made in the late 1930s for a noted equestrienne, Louise Cottam of Santa Barbara, Calif. Cottam chose the saddle for her appearances at numerous horse shows, parades and other events. Morphy’s catalog noted that its design was actually a slight variation on the Machris model, which Bohlin debuted in their 1937 catalog. The saddle was also featured in James Nottage’s reference book titled “Saddlemaker to the Stars.” Together with a matching bridle, second breast collar, and saddle set, and with provenance from the celebrated George Pitman collection of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., it sold for $233,700 against an estimate of $100,000-$150,000.

Steeped in Old West lore, a Henry Model 1860 lever-action rifle was identified through its serial number as having been from a 90-gun shipment sent to Fort Knox, Maine, in 1864. It was stamped with the name of its New England destination, where it was issued to Lt. Ezra Rideout of the 15th Maine. In 1869, Ezra gifted the rifle to his brother, Jacob Rideout, a traveling preacher whose documented Kansas acquaintances included Wild Bill Hickok, John Wesley Hardin, the infamous sheriff William “Buffalo Bully” Brooks, and quite likely the Earp brothers. Engraved “Jacob Rideout / Contention Arizona Ter.,” the fabled longarm is shown in two classic reference books: Wiley Sword’s “The Historic Henry Rifle” and George Madis’ “The Winchester Book.” At auction, it landed above its high estimate, at $41,820.

The auction gave collectors of silver spurs ample choice with a 5 5-lot selection that showcased many of the greatest names in Western silverwork. A pair of massive double-mounted shield and dome-mounted sterling silver spurs by Qualey Bros. realized $29,520.

The revered Bohlin name also lent its magic to a handsome gold filigreed and sterling silver buckle and belt set with a bas-relief “chief” or ‘Indian-head” design. The belt, which made a proud artistic statement with its eight mounted, twocolor gold Indian heads, was created by Cody, Wyo., saddle maker and Bohlin tooler Keith Seidel. The set rose to $7,380 against a $3,000-$4,000 estimate. For more information, visit www.morphyauctions.com.tesy of Morphy

White Bull (1849-1947), nephew of Sitting Bull, drew this historical ledger and story book documenting Indian battles in the West, 162 pages, 120 with writing, 33 with drawings, 28 blank and facing drawings. Considered important within Lakota historiography, it realized $270,600 against an estimate of $75,000-$125,000.

These are three “Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings” figures.
Many original vintage “Star Wars” figures will be sold.
