Outdoor Country Show Announced Gathering On The Farm To Be Held In Gettysburg On May 14 Show promotor Connie Gleed will be holding a show, titled Gathering on the Farm, in Gettysburg, Pa., on Saturday, May 14. There will be dealers set up under tents, plus in a barn. The owner’s shop will also be open in two log cabins on the property. The show will be held at 1042 Bullfrog Road, Fairfield, Pa., from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. Admission is free of charge. A sheriff sale purchase in 1980,

the farm is the home of Linda and Joe Bowden. It was love at first sight. The log portion of the house dates to 1740, and the stone, to 1830. In 1930, an addition was added to the stone portion. The Trader’s Cabin behind the house dates to 1720. From the 1730s into the 1740s, it was a dwelling for Swedish explorer Hans Steelman, an Indian trader and interpreter. After the Battle of Gettysburg

and prior to Confederate troops moving South, diaries tell stories of temporary bivouacs/camps set up on the farm. The Bowdens raised sheep on the land, and the house and barn are registered by Historic Gettysburg as historic structures. The Trader’s Cabin remains among the earliest structures in the area. In the last 10 years, Joe Bowden restored the original bake oven at the rear of the kitchen. The main

cabin was built by Joe and houses the couple’s antiques shop. Joe worked as a national park ranger/criminal investigator for 20 years at the Gettysburg National Military Park. His last assignment before retirement was being the park liaison with Turner Broadcasting for the filming of the documentary “Gettysburg” in 2002. Linda is a school teacher. Continued on page 3

On that basis alone, the pre-production archetypes became immediate rarities, but more than four decades of “Star Wars” mania have catapulted the Jslot prototype to an extraterrestrial level of desirability. The very scarce example offered by Hake’s ignited a

bidding war that ended at a sky-high $204,435, a new auction record for any “Star Wars” action figure. “Bidding on the figure remained static at just under $100,000 until right before the initial 20-minute clock ran out at 9 p.m. At that point, two bidders starting going back and forth with their bids, waiting each time till the renewed clock had almost run out of time,” said Alex Winter, president of Hake’s Auctions. “The competition was still going strong two-and-a-half hours later. I think each of the bidders might have been hoping the other would fall asleep. But they went at it strategically, and we were more than happy to wait as long as it took to get a record-setting result like that.” The previous world auction record for a “Star Wars” prototype action figure was set in 2019 (also by Hake’s) with the $185,850 sale of a

Boba Fett prototype graded AFA 85+ Near Mint. The grading is a significant detail to note, since the example sold on March 16 was in AFA 50 VG condition, yet it topped the previous record by more than $18,500. “The fact that it sold for so much more than the previously offered prototype, whose condition was graded much higher, shows the current strength of the vintage “Star Wars” toy market and just how fast it has risen over the last few years,” remarked Winter. It was bought by a buyer in California. It was not just the mysterious bounty hunter Boba Fett who inspired “Star Wars” fans to bid aggressively. “The sale was led by the most coveted ‘Star Wars’ figure of them all, but ‘Star Wars’ as a whole set a record. There were 300 lots of ‘Star Wars’ items in the sale, and together they grossed $1.2 million, the highest amount

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

400 ANTIQUE DEALERS

This Week: Early Metals

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

I have often written about areas for new collectors to pursue. Some topics, such as jacquard coverlets, remain bargains, albeit with prices that are slowly ticking upward. Other areas, like Empire furniture, remain flat as the proverbial pancake. One topic that I do think could be explored by a young collector is early wrought iron, brass and copper. The other weekend, I was out exploring shops and came across a wooden barrel full of wrought iron forks, spatulas, skimmers and the like. They were priced around $35 each, and one could have easily

well Don Fennimore’s beautiful and exhaustive studies of the metal collections at Winterthur. Finally, I would offer that tin is still one of the best bargains in the antiques world. Cookie cutters that have an aesthetic and funtional value are real bargains to collect. Some bring big money, but it is still possible to find early examples for very little money if you know what to look for. Moreover, in between, there are tons of cookie cutters that can be purchased and just used in your kitchen. We have three baskets full of them in our house. Another note to encourage the collecting of early metal is that they generally require little conservation. Keeping them clean, dry and rust-free may be all that you need to do in order to preserve a collection of iron or tin. Patinated pieces like pewter and copper often should be left in their original crusty condition. Why? Because if a piece is damaged and repaired or restored, one of the best ways to mask that change is by polishing the

assembled a nice grouping. More to the point, the iron was early, with most of it dating from the first quarter of the 19th century and thus a nice period discovery. A week later, my wife and I purchased a hammered copper teakettle marked by the maker, who was one of her ancestors, for a price that was one-third of what one would have paid 20 years ago. Metalwork is a great topic for a collector to consider. The forms and metals are amazing, from pewter plates to copper flagons. One can chase after beautifully engraved or wriggle worked surfaces or equally striking and dramatic forms like gooseneck kettles. If you like New England items, they are as different as night and day from examples made in Pennsylvania. Therefore, you can collect items that can be attributed to makers working within a few miles of your home. There are great reference books, and I particularly recommend Jeanette Lasansky’s must-read books on tin and wrought iron from southcentral Pennsylvania as

Early Phonographs, Vintage Jukeboxes And Mechanical Banks Do Well

Show Times 9:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M.

J. & E. Stevens North Pole Mechanical Bank Sells For $7,670 Antique Edison phonographs, mid-century jukeboxes (one a Wurlitzer replica, another a genuine Rock-Ola) and rare, early 20th-century mechanical banks by J. & E. Stevens all performed well in Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.’s online Music Machines, Toys and Advertising sale held March 19. The 541-lot auction grossed $420,847. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium. “Prices on the Edison Class M and Edison Opera phonographs were spectacular,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions. “The John Peel collection enjoys cachet among Canadian collectors, especially now.” An Edison Class M cylinder phonograph, made in America, ca. 1890, was the sale’s top lot, besting its $15,000 high estimate to bring $35,400. The Edison Class M cylinder phonograph was initially intended for business dictation but in time entertainment became its main role. The phonograph sold came with a standard reproducer, rails for listening tubes and one listening tube. It was sold by

This ca. 1890 battery-driven Edison Class M cylinder phonograph sold by Holland Bros., Ottawa, sole importer for Canada, and made in America, sold for $35,400. Holland Bros., Ottawa, sole importer for Canada. It didn’t have a battery, but that didn’t deter bidders. A ca. 1911 Edison Opera cylinder phonograph, Edison’s top-of-the-line model, famous for its smooth-running motor and self-supporting horn, realized $8,260. The phonograph boasted a rich mahogany finish on the case and bronze tiger striping, which added to its air of quality and luxury. Bidders blasted through the estimate, which was $3,000-$4,000. Miller said that condition and rarity ranked foremost in

determining the prices for the Tanenbaum collection of mechanical banks. “Overall they did very well, with some great surprises. The common thread in this auction was ‘mechanical antiques.’ The only thing more animated than the objects up for bid were the online bidders vying to win them,” according to Miller. A J. & E. Stevens mechanical bank, exceedingly rare and depicting reliefs of Robert E. Peary’s 1909 expedition to reach the North Pole, brought $7,670. Users pushed the flag down, inserted a coin into the

slot and pressed forward. The painted cast-iron bank showed very little wear and was in good working order. It was made in the U.S. and was patented on July 26, 1910. A J. & E. Stevens painted cast-iron “Boy Robbing Bird’ Nest” mechanical bank, the hard-to-find color variation and in good working order, fetched $6,490. The user raised the limb of the tree to position, placed a coin in the slot and pressed the lever; limb and boy fall, and the coin disappears into the tree. The ca. 1906 bank was made in the U.S. (Cromwell, Conn.). A Wurlitzer Model 1015 jukebox (known as the “One More Time” or “OMT” jukebox) was a replica, not an original. It was made in Germany around 1990 and had been updated to play 45 rpm records (up to 50). Boasting multi-color lights, bubble tubes and gleaming chrome on the nostalgic exterior, the jukebox beat its $6,000 high estimate, topping out at $8,260. Selling for the exact same price was a Rock-Ola Tempo II Model 1478 jukebox, this one

IN CELEBRATION OF OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY WE ARE HONORED TO PRESENT

PETER MILLER AMERICAN, 1913—1996

FORGOTTEN WOMAN OF AMERICAN MODERNISM

April 23 - May 31, 2022

Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio Inc. is excited to announce its 40th anniversary celebration and upcoming exhibition of the estate of Peter Miller, a female American modernist. A selection of her works will also be featured at the 60th annual Philadelphia Show, held Thursday, April 28, to Sunday, May 1, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A preview and anniversary party for “Peter Miller – Forgotten Woman of American Modernism” will be held Saturday, April 23, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the gallery’s home in Doylestown, Pa. For 40 years, Gratz Gallery has taken great pride in supporting the arts and communities of New Hope, Bucks County, Philadelphia, and the Delaware Valley. They have worked with many organizations over the years: the James A. Michener Art

Museum, the Princeton University Art Museum, Morven Museum & Garden, the Drumthwacket Foundation, Princeton University, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Mercer Museum, the Woodmere Art Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Pennsylvania Historical Society, the Travis Manion Foundation, AIDS Walk New Hope, and the Salvation Army, to name a few. “This year we are honored to announce our commitment for a portion of our sales to be designated to the Philadelphia organization Philabundance, ‘seeking to drive hunger from our communities today and end hunger forever,’” said Stephanie Lisle of Gratz Gallery.

Over the years, Gratz Gallery has promoted and featured many important female American artists from the New Hope Circle, the Philadelphia Ten, and students from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It has always been its belief that female artists more often do not receive the deserved recognition for their work and talent. It is with hope and confidence that they finally see women artists from both long ago and today being reevaluated and honored for their contributions to the American art community, as this has been long overdue. The discovery of the Peter Miller collection presented here, and her story, is one the most fascinating and important discoveries the gallery has made over its 40 years

representing American painters. Born Henrietta Myers in 1913, she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1933. To demonstrate her passion and determination, she wrote in her application that “she would rather fail at painting than succeed at anything else in life.” She adopted her childhood nickname, Peter, and became Peter Miller after marrying fellow academy student Earle Miller in 1935. Thinking she might be taken more seriously by fellow artists, collectors, and critics with a male sounding name, she was hoping to enhance her career in a world heavily dominated by men. Peter came from an affluent family in Hanover, Pa., and later Continued on page 7

settled at Rock Raymond Farm in Chester County. She designated the 350-acre farm and property to be donated to the Brandywine Conservancy after her death in 1996. Peter Miller exhibited at the prestigious Julien Levy gallery in two one-woman shows in1944 and 1946. She studied under famed Pennsylvania Impressionist Daniel Garber and privately with modernist Arthur Carles for 10 years. Peter and Earle Miller split their personal time between Pennsylvania and their spiritual home in Santa Fe, N.M. Peter was the goddaughter of mystic Edith Warner and San Ildefonso Pueblo Indian, Tilano Montoya; both were known for running “Teahouse at Otowi Bridge,” a small, self-sustaining destination for hungry travelers and sometimes even the families of nearby working scientists of the Manhattan project in Los Alamos. society life to become an artist, immersed herself in the ancient history and ceremonies of the Native Americans, and drew passion and inspiration from these deeply connected friendships. But, she was also friends with the Calders, Henri Matisse, Max Ernst, and all of the surrealists of that time living in New York. Peter Miller’s paintings combine the influences of early modernist painters such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Miro, Fernand Leger, Arthur Carles, and Paul Klee, with Native American symbols, petroglyphs, and ceremonial objects. She was a highly intellectual, independent woman that developed her own style and artistic language. Peter Miller was a spiritual woman who observed the Native American beliefs of honoring nature. At home in Pennsylvania, Peter Miller was a close friend of Philadelphia Museum of Art Director Anne Julie d’Harnoncourt and became a great patron of the museum. stunning collection of paintings, including works by Jean Miro, Alexander Calder, and Georges Braques. “Horse, Pipe, and Red Flower” by Joan Miro was one of several paintings given to The Philadelphia Museum of Art by the Millers. The Gratz Gallery invites everyone to join in the tribute and transformation from a forgotten to an acknowledged woman of American modernism. The exhibition is accompanied by a first ever published monograph on the artist, fully illustrated, with text written by art historian Francis M. Naumann. Two other important painters from the Philadelphia art scene of the same time period, and students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as well, were modernist and surrealist artists Leon Kelly and Leonard Nelson. So it is with great pleasure that the gallery also put together a special selection of works by these three Philadelphia painters in a tribute exhibition called “A Philadelphia Story,” which will be featured at the Philadelphia Antiques

card, which set a record for any type of carded Jawa figure at $36,285 (est. $10,000$20,000). G.I. Joe is on the rise with collectors, as this auction proved quite decisively. From Hasbro’s 1982 “A Real American Hero” toyline, an AFA-graded 80 NM (archival case) Series 2/20 Back blister card containing a 3.75-inchtall action figure of Commando Snake Eyes more than tripled its high estimate

at $18,500. A straight-arm version of the same figure, AFA-graded 85 NM+ (archival case) in a Series 1/9 Back blister card, reached the midpoint of its estimate range at $15,575. The political memorabilia section was red-hot, with its own record-setting highlights. First and foremost was a James M. Cox/Franklin D. Roosevelt jugate campaign button from the U.S. Presidential election of 1920. Only six Cox/Roosevelt jugates are known to exist in the 1.25-inch size, and of

This “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” Canadian-issue three-pack containing 3.75-inch action figures of Stormtrooper (Hoth Battle Gear/Snowtrooper), AT-AT Driver, and Cloud Car Pilot from Kenner’s 1981 series, AFAgraded 75 QY EX+/NM (archival case) and encapsulated in a Sears-exclusive window box, sold for $42,835.

A rare poster advertising a 1960 concert at the Palace Pier in Toronto, Canada, featuring “the Fabulous Johnny Cash – The Nation’s No 1 Recording Star with the Tennessee Two and Bill Munroe (sic) and the Blue Grass Boys,” sold for $11,160.

This James M. Cox/Franklin D. Roosevelt jugate button, 1.25 inches, one of only six known in that size, and one of only three known in this design, the first of its type to reach the marketplace in 40 years, sold for $185,850. It is a world auction record for a pinback button of any type.

The mate to the Cox/Roosevelt button that opened the sale, this 1.25-inch jugate depicting 1920s other major presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, sold for $51,920, more than five times the high estimate.

those six, three are held in the Cox family collection. Two others are prized assets in an East Coast collection. Adding to its rarity, only three of the six known buttons are of the particular design exhibited by Hake’s example, which sold for $185,850. This price far exceeds the $70,092 previous auction record for a pinback of any type, which was set by Hake’s with the sale of a Babe Ruth 1915 American League Champions button in June 2021. A second political button that created a bidding frenzy was the “mate” to the Cox/Roosevelt button: a 1.25inch jugate depicting 1920s other major presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. “In searching through nearly 20 years of past auction records, we

couldn’t find an example of this button offered for sale anywhere,” stated Winter. Estimated at $5,000-$10,000, the Harding/Coolidge jugate commanded $51,920. For its March 15 and 16 sale, Hake’s secured several pieces of important, investment-grade art, including the original pen-and-ink cover art for Incredible Hulk #283 comic book, published by Marvel in May 1983. The talent behind the actionpacked image of a rampaging Hulk leading an Avengers charge is the duo of Ed Hannigan (art) and Al Milgrom (inks). With penciled notations and a Marvel copyright inkstamp on verso, the vibrant inkboard swept past its $10,000-$20,000 estimate to land at $33,315. Also easily surpassing expectations, the

April Showers Bring May Flowers Avid gardeners are taught to appreciate the beauty of both annuals and perennials, and a common saying among them is “April showers bring May flowers.” Another that will hopefully prove evident in the Mid-Atlantic is “Spring is just around the corner.” It’s a popular thing to say and hear around this time of year, but one thing many don’t know is where the first rhyme/saying originated. It reaches back to the mid-16th century, although early use of “April showers bring May flowers” perhaps existed even earlier. In 1557, Thomas Tusser compiled a collection of writings he called “A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry.” In the April husbandry section, he wrote, “Sweet April Showers, Do spring May flowers.” The rhyme was originally a short poem. Looking ahead to all the

The work by the 19th-century Iowa artist went for $800,000. At 10.5 inches tall, this bottle featured a label reading, “Pictured Rock Sand, Put Up By Andrew Clemens, Deaf-Mute, McGregor, Iowa,” inside the bottle under the faceted stopper. Dated just five years before his death, both the size of the bottle and the placement of the label were unusual for Clemens, but consistent with his constant evolution as an artist as his mastery of the medium allowed him to make more and more intricate examples. This sale marks the sixth time Hindman has sold a Clemens sand bottle for six figures, including the record auction price of $956,000 for the artist achieved in September 2021. Collection Of Iconic 1960s Posters Stored In A Farmhouse Attic For Six Decades

Graded 9.6 is this Grateful Dead, so-called Skeleton & Roses poster made for a Family Dog show at the Avalon in the summer of 1966.

This poster for a Janis Joplin/Big Brother 1966 S.F. Hells Angels dance party is graded 9.0. summer of 1966. Twice before, Heritage has reached six figures for the Skeleton & Roses graded in the high 9s. In fact, one still holds the record for a psychedelic concert poster: $118,750, set in November 2019. “Naturally, the big question now is: Will Murphy’s 9.6-graded Dead poster set yet another new world record due to its amazing provenance and pedigree,?”

asked Heritage Auctions’ director of concert posters Pete Howard. To Murphy, of course, these posters are far more than keepsakes from far-flung, far-out yesterdays. Rather, they serve as warm reminders of childhood visits during the late 1960s to Frank Westlake’s famed printing press at 141 Noe St., where her stepfather was self-printing a book he had written. During those regular sojourns into the city, Murphy and her siblings played hide-and-seek behind presses and colored on the backs of freshly minted posters for concerts not yet legendary. Only later, when she was well into her teens, did Murphy discover the kids weren’t the only ones collecting posters from Bindweed: Her mom and stepdad, too, brought “Frank’s posters” home after each field trip, carefully and quietly stashing each one in a steamer trunk in their farmhouse attic. No one ever pulled out the posters or looked at them or talked about them or thought about them. “They just sat up there,” Murphy says now, “while a bustling family life went on” in the house below. Years later, Murphy went to work in the music industry, first at Capitol Records, where she worked on album releases by the likes of Paul McCartney, Poison, Queen, Heart and Tina Turner; then in artist management, working alongside Great White, Berlin and Appetite for Destruction-era Guns N’ Roses; then with David Crosby producing benefit concerts. She collected her own concert posters, from the 1980s, which will also head to auction in coming months, and her thoughts returned to her mother’s stash in the attic. “Mom knew I had a keen

To collectors of vintage rock posters, KC Murphy’s assemblage at Heritage Auctions features only the best of the best, 40 extraordinarily valuable, vaunted and crisp keepsakes from the Bindweed Press, nearmint memories pulled from a family friend’s famed printing presses when Murphy was just a little girl living in the then wilds of Sonoma County. Her historic collection contains the totemic, valuable vestiges of a bygone Bay Area once ruled by the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane and their psychedelic brethren. The artworks in the Saturday, April 16, Music Memorabilia Signature Auction advertise the 1967 Human Be-in at the Polo Grounds, the famed Family Dog shows at the legendary Avalon Ballroom, Joplin and her band playing Hells Angels dances, Pink Floyd’s 1968 show at Sacramento’s Sound Factory, to name but a few. Ride the 13th Floor Elevators with Roky Erickson; get strictly personal with Captain Beefheart; trip to Mendocino with the Sir Douglas Quintet. These posters were so beloved by San Franciscans in the 1960s that they were often folded up, taken home and tacked all over walls. No one thought of them as valuable collectors’ items back then, merely as mementos from favorite shows by beloved bands. That’s why the few remaining mintcondition Bindweed Posters have become so treasured and sought-after in recent years, chief among them one of the most coveted and cherished concert posters of all time, which is being offered in this event in near-mint condition: the Dead’s so-called Skeleton & Roses poster made for a Family Dog show at the Avalon in the

As she says, “They are very tied up in the sentimental memories of a little girl in Sonoma County, 1960s San Francisco, recollections of Frank Westlake, the Bindweed print shop, and, of course, my mother, who passed away five years ago.” Murphy once dreamed of framing each poster for her mother, or displaying them in her tiny Malibu rental during her management days. But ultimately, she had only two framed and hung, among them one of the posters signed by the legendary artist Stanley Mouse. “As I send these out into the world for others to cherish and enjoy, it is my sincere hope that they find owners who truly appreciate the artistry and cultural significance of these mementos from an astounding era in American music and history,” said Murphy. “Their beauty awes me every time I gaze upon them, and I came to know
