Famed Parks Birdstone Announced As Headliner Of Morphy’s May 17 Prehistoric American Artifact Auction At their first Prehistoric American Artifact Auction, held on Nov. 9, 2013, Morphy’s achieved a world-record auction price for an arrowhead: $276,000. Department head John Mark Clark, who organized the sale, said he believes lightning could strike twice for Morphy’s when the celebrated Parks Birdstone crosses the auction block on Saturday, May 17. During his announcement that the Parks Birdstone had been secured as the headliner for Morphy’s second Prehistoric event, Clark described the artifact as “one of the five finest birdstones in the world.” Found in a plowed field in DeKalb County, Ind., in 1951, the Parks Birdstone is estimated to be 2,500 years old. “Top birdstones have been selling privately for $700,000 to $900,000,” Clark said. “We believe the Parks Birdstone,

In this case, the owner had a shelf of Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries in original dust jackets. Now I am willing to bet that you probably read one or the other or both of these teen serials. The story of the Hardy Boys series is fascinating and spans decades from 1927 to the present and was written by various ghostwriters under the name of Franklin W. Dixon.

On the flip side, one could assemble a collection of vintage Hardy Boys in dust jackets for as little as $20 a copy! What a great collection to have and to grow! In my next column, a few more suggestions on things to collect for novices that are both fun and won’t break the bank.

The Hardy Boys are as much about American culture as Superman or any other hero. As a boy, I remember getting a new Hardy Boys book whenever it was a snowy day and school was canceled. Mother was always furious that I got through it about an hour but during that time the world could have ended, as I so loved reading them. The bibliography of Hardy Boys books is staggering and I was amazed to see

Spring is upon us and auction season, antiques show season, and the flea markets are now upon us. Like the swallows returning to Capistrano or moths to a flame, we are all drawn out of our homes to begin the hunt for things to add to our collections. Too often I am asked to offer suggestions of things that might be of interest to a young or new collector. Perhaps you have a son or daughter or close friend who might have that collecting

Tin is very affordable and can easily be found, two pretty high reasons to collect in my book. And there are wonderful function aspects of tin ware…for example using tin cookie cutters at Christmas! I suspect that for under $500 you could assemble a pretty good collection of tin that is beautiful, fun and sure to inspire any collector. This past week, I was out, a real rarity, to a genuine used bookstore! When I travel, that is usually my first

gene inside of their cells and they just need a bit of encouragement. Yet going out as a first-time buyer can be intimidating. Sure we would all like to have Chippendale furniture but that is a pretty expensive proposition. So what are some good choices for new collectors to pursue? I still rank tin ware as one of the great and unsung categories to collect for those people who want handmade and unique items without a serious outlay of cash. Tin was the metal of choice during the 19th century and was used for everything from cookie cutters to pitchers. It was made into elaborate shapes in New England for use at weddings and was punched and decorated not only in Pennsylvania but also out here in New Mexico.
