Fine European Toys Dominate At Bertoia’s $1.9 Million Annual Fall Auction Marklin Steam-Powered “Amerika” Liner Sails To $59,000
This circa 1920-30 Marklin “Amerika” Series II steam-powered liner, retained for generations by original owner’s family, exquisitely detailed, was the top lot of the sale, selling for $59,000. Bertoia’s Annual Fall 2016 Auction had been publicized as one of the company’s most diverse to date, and over the long weekend of Nov. 11, 12, and 13, that promise was fulfilled. Bidders paid aggressive, above-estimate prices for rare toys from dozens of popular categories, pushing the total to $1.9 million, inclusive of buyer’s premium. The glossy, full-color auction catalog was the thickness of a good-sized city’s telephone book, a testament to the huge variety of toys, banks, and holiday antiques Bertoia’s had carefully selected for the 2,194-lot sale. There were buyers for everything, from diminutive penny toys to hefty steam plants, but it was premium-quality Marklin boats that sailed to the top of prices realized. A Series II steam-powered “Amerika” liner was absolutely fresh to the market and consigned by the grandchildren of the Continued on page 2

When Herbert Broadfoot II and his wife, Nancy, called Great Gatsby’s Auction Gallery in Atlanta, Ga., to consign a family heirloom – a tour de force Cincinnati cabinet with exuberant carving by William H. Fry - they knew this piece needed to find “the right home.” In the midst of downsizing, the Broadfoots counted on the marketing efforts of the auction house to find the right audience. The cabinet, which was commissioned as a wedding present in 1876 for Broadfoot’s great-great aunt, The Aesthetic Movement carved cabinet, circa 1876, from Mary Boyd, had been Cincinnati, Ohio, sold for $7,400 at Great Gatsby’s Auction Gallery passed down in Atlanta, Ga. through the family, never appearing on the open market. Fallen Clock Returns It’s back! The fallen clock has returned. Earlier this year the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia, Pa., shared a surveillance video of a pair of visitors to the museum who couldn’t resist touching a sculptural wall clock, accidentally knocking the wooden clock off the wall and severely damaging it. The museum posted the video on its official YouTube channel as a reminder to visitors about the danger of touching museum objects. Once posted, the video immediately went viral, resulting in phone calls from media around the world asking for interviews and further information about the accident. Fortunately, the damaged clock was not beyond repair. The clock has just been returned to the museum after being restored by its Minnesota artist and clockmaker James Borden. The nationally award-winning clock had hung in the museum for more than 20 years but is again on display where it belongs. Accompanying its return are a half-dozen more large-scale unique clocks. Together, they form the new exhibit, “Time Shapes: The Artistry of James Borden,” which will be on view through Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017. The museum looks forward to sharing this collection as they welcome visitors to look, but not touch.

The Arcade cast-iron Bekins moving van, ex. Donald Kaufman collection, sold for $16,520.
An impressive Gunthermann eight-man (plus coxswain) clockwork scull with provenance from the esteemed Dick Claus collection had many paddles airborne before reaching landfall at $20,060. Its pre-sale estimate had been set at $13,000$17,000. Collectors of postwar automobiles love the grand size and realistic detailing on Japanese renditions of midcentury U.S. cars like the Asahi Chrysler Imperial offered at Bertoia’s sale. The shiny black 15-inch luxury sedan with cream interior came with its original pictorial box, which more than justified its strong $14,160 selling price. Part one of Tony Lasala’s collection was a big hit with cast-iron toy enthusiasts. An astute collector for many years, Lasala was able to acquire rare and desirable pieces from early dealers and A circa-1929 Marklin “Rheingold” paddleboat, 30 inches long, sold for $35,400. auctions. The top-selling castiron vehicle in the sale was a white, circa-1929 Arcade Bekins moving van, ex. Donald Kaufman collection, which sold for $16,520 against presale expectations of $4,000$6,000. It was followed by a scarce green and orange 11inch Kenton Pickwick Nite Coach, which quickly climbed The Asahi black Chrysler Imperial with original box sold for $14,160. up the bidding ranks to $10,620 against an estimate of $3,000-$4,000. “Tony’s toys pedestals, $10,620. The demand for Continental transportation and character toys was evident, as well. A near-mint Lehmann Echo clockwork motorcycle with rider was especially desirable because of its colorfully labeled original box. Estimated at $5,500-$7,500, it sped off to a new owner for $11,210. A Carette 16-inch deluxe limousine with beveled glass windows, chauffeur, and three passengers made a stylish exit at $8,850. Boxed and complete with cook’s spoon, a circa-1900 Lehmann Baker and Chimney Sweep surpassed expectations at $5,015.

Flying high above the group was a J. & E. Stevens Pelican/Man Thumbs Nose bank, patented in 1878. With an attractive near-mint japanned finish, it settled at $6,490. Early American toys were led by a very rare Ives Leap Frog bell toy, also known as “Two Kids.” It was one of only
two examples of its type that Bertoia’s experts had seen – the other being the one in Max Berry’s collection, which Bertoia’s auctioned in 2014. The Leap Frog entered in Bertoia’s November sale came from the estate of a North Carolina collector who had owned it for 20 years. Against a $7,500-$10,000 estimate, it garnered $14,160. And on the subject of extreme rarity, another early American highlight was a possible sole

original owner, who received the boat as a child in the 1920s. In spectacular, all-original condition, it commanded a winning bid of $59,000. Cruising to $35,400, a 30-inch, circa-1929 Marklin “Rheingold” paddleboat easily achieved its pre-sale estimate, as did the circa-1910 New York battleship that earned $23,600. Ships were not the only Marklin toys to grab the auction spotlight. European trains and accessories from the Warren Heid collection had the full attention of railway enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic. A beautifully hand-enameled, fully accessorized Marklin Central Station in superior condition roared past its $15,000-$20,000 estimate to settle at $32,450. Other Marklin train highlights included a gauge 1 steeple cab, $5,900; an O-gauge baggage car, $4,720; and an elaborately detailed O-gauge suspension bridge with arch towers, flags, and statues atop
survivor: a circa-1880s Goodwin carriage with a small, seated child, as pictured in Blair Whitton’s book “American Clockwork Toys 1862-1900.” It surpassed its estimate range to sell for $8,260. Because Bertoia’s November auction traditionally launches the holiday season for toy collectors, there is always a glittering section of Christmas antiques from which to choose, including Dresdens, Santas of various types, kugels, and glass ornaments. This year, the leader of the Christmas parade was Santa himself, in the form of a German belsnickle with glass icicle beard, mica “snow” on his coat and golden beads around his hood. A recent attic find, the 16-inch-tall candy container had been estimated at $8,000-$12,000 but provided a pleasant auction surprise for its consignor when it sold for $26,550. Collector Anecdotes And Antics A Look Under The Hood Of Collecting And Investing In Vintage Hot Wheels Cars is whether or not a healthy secondary market will readily exist several decades from now. Younger collectors just aren’t that interested in diecast collectibles when the few discretionary dollars they have can go towards Lego, video games, collectible card games, and other items that they see as a much better investment than over-produced diecast cars. Collectors of PEZ candy dispensers are in a similar situation as modern era Hot Wheels collectors, with both brands in limbo with modern day collectors. Outside of vintage items, most collectors see little to no value in contemporary pieces. As such, most of these items are over-produced and over-hoarded by novice speculators who see no harm in hoarding an item that can be bought for less than a dollar or two. Still, had these novices bothered to actively review the secondary market, they would learn that items produced decades ago are still not moving on a fickle secondary market that has turned its back on mass-produced toys of yesteryear. Even contemporary action figures in today’s day and age are not worth readily saving for the purpose of speculation. That proverbial ship sailed decades ago. This begs the question as to what investment-minded collectors who have their eyes and wallets set on Hot Wheels cars should be buying? The answer is completely original, near mint condition or better “Redline” era cars. These are some of the most stable investments in the line’s history. Novice collectors should buy only from trusted dealers and avoid auction sites like eBay unless the seller is a well-known dealer. This is due to the amount of fakes and
reproduction pieces readily available on the market. Cars featuring modified or reproduction parts are worth a fraction of a similar car in original condition. Even carded vintage cars can be faked or re-glued to their backings. This practice wreaked havoc in the vintage factory-sealed action figure market, but thankfully third
party grading via AFA (Action Figure Authority) helped rectify this issue, but not fully resolve it. And while a sister company of AFA grades factory sealed diecast cars like Hot Wheels, the service has not caught on like action figure grading has. As such, most novice collectors are left to their own devices. Sadly, the
production and use of reproduction parts is on the rise as 3D printing becomes more obtainable and affordable. Even well-intentioned dealers have been noted as using reproduction parts at times. Most experienced collectors will not touch a car with reproduction parts or any kind of Continued on page 4

On July 10, 1968, with little fanfare, U.S.-based toymaker Mattel revolutionized the toy aisle with the release of the first 16 Hot Wheels collectible diecast cars. The cars were created to compete against collectible diecast toys produced by Matchbox and other manufacturers in an age long before electronic entertainment and virtual reality dominated our daily lives. What made Hot Wheels cars stand out from the competition were their unique custom designs and colorful paint jobs that appealed to children as well as adults. With a very low price point that has been kept below $1 for each of the basic assortment of cars since release, Hot Wheels became a bonafide hit with enthusiasts since day one. Those first 16 cars released in 1968 are known as the “sweet sixteen” and contain some of the most sought-after designs in the history of the brand. They also feature the coveted “red lines,” distinctly shown on the wheels of the car in which collectors now seek out. “Redlines” were manufactured for the first 10 years of Hot Wheels release, roughly from 1968 to ’77. These represent some of the most coveted designs in the history of the brand and are where most of the valuable and sought-after cars reside. It is this era where smart collectors and investors should focus their time and money. Surprisingly, a lot of the vintage cars in near mint condition from the “redline” era are not all that expensive. Only the rarest cars with the most obscure paint jobs are
extremely valuable. Prices on most vintage pieces typically start at $50 for common releases and go up from there. A common set of original releases containing one example of each of the first 16 cars produced can be had for less than $1,000 to $2,000 depending on condition and rarity. This presents one of the best deals in vintage collecting in an era when one near mint and graded loose Star Wars figure from the original vintage line can cost $100 or more. Over the years, collecting Hot Wheels cars has grown in popularity from its humble beginnings to extreme speculation. By the mid-1990s to the early 2000s it was clear that the brand was over-hoarded by speculators hoping that the company’s decision to release chase type cars and short packed releases would drive values on the secondary market. The decision worked but did a lot of damage to the brand, as many hardcore collectors have been left with sealed cases of Hot Wheels cars from the turn of the 21st century that have little value. You can still buy factorysealed cases of Hot Wheels cars from decades ago at a cost that is less than what they were at their time of release. This has actually caused would-be speculators to avoid a lot of the newest releases going forward. In turn, this has also caused Mattel to adjust the size of their manufacturing runs for some of the newest releases. Still, these measures are not doing enough to curb speculation in modern era releases, and hoarders are hardly ever rewarded. Another factor that wouldbe investors need to consider when choosing to financially invest in the Hot Wheels brand

investors need to use caution. With the value of modern era cars not going anywhere and younger collectors moving on to other collectibles, investing in vintage Hot Wheels cars is a labor of love more than a serious investment. Still, serious cross collectors may want to look at adding a few affordable vintage cars to their collections as a simple reminder of yesteryear!

USPS Stamps In Honor Of Andrew Wyeth Will Be Issued In 2017 Pennsylvania and Maine, he was inspired by the lives, houses, and personal belongings of the people around him, finding particular interest in the German immigrants
on a nearby Chadds Ford farm, painting portraits of them and views in and around their home. By the 1940s, the tendencies that define much of his work were
taking shape, among them a focus on death and loss, the uses of places and objects to serve as stand-ins for people, intense and unsentimental scrutiny of nature, and an often startling austerity and stark lack of color. Rather than depict nature with photographic accuracy, Wyeth used painting to convey emotions that were difficult to put into words. His work often reflected memories, associations, and echoes from his personal life, including his own distinctive sense of the
wondrous and the strange. The exhibition “Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect,” on view from June 24 through Sept. 17, 2017, at the Brandywine River Museum of Art, is the first chronological retrospective of the artist’s career since the 1970s. The exhibition is coorganized by Seattle Art Museum and includes over 100 of his finest paintings and works on papers selected from major museums and private collections. It will be on view at the Seattle Museum of Art starting in October 2017.
Guided tours of Andrew Wyeth’s studio are available seasonally, from April through mid-November. Wyeth painted in the studio from 1940 until 2008. Visitors may also tour the Kuerner Farm, which inspired nearly 1,000 works of art by Andrew Wyeth, as well as the N.C. Wyeth House and Studio. All are National Historic Landmarks. The museum is located on Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pa. For more information, call 610-388-2700 or visit www.brandywinemuseum.org.
Estate Auction Thursday, December 29th at 9:00 AM
The official dedication ceremony for the stamps will take place at the Brandywine River Museum of Art on Wednesday, July 12, 2017.

The United States Postal Service recently announced it will issue a pane of stamps in 2017 inspired by the art of Andrew Wyeth to commemorate the centennial of the artist’s birth. Wyeth was born and spent his life in Chadds Ford, Pa., home of the Brandywine River Museum of Art, which displays American art, including work by three generations of the Wyeth family, and offers tours of the artist’s studio. The official dedication ceremony for the stamps will take place at the Brandywine River Museum of Art on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at 10 a.m., 100 years to the day that Andrew Wyeth was born. This event will be free of charge and open to the public. The pane of Forever stamps will feature details of the 12 following Andrew Wyeth paintings: “Alvaro and Christina,” 1968; “Big Room,” 1988; “The Carry,” 2003; “Christina’s World,” 1948; “Frostbitten,” 1962; “North Light,” 1984; “Sailor’s Valentine,” 1985; “Soaring,” 1942-50; “Spring Fed,” 1967; “My Studio,” 1974; “Wind from the Sea,” 1947; “Young Bull,” 1960. Derry Noyes served as art director and designer for this stamp sheet. Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) typically spent each summer and early fall in Maine. In both
