TNW test flies Af Af A380
TNW editor Natalia Thomson reports on the largest-ever scheduled flight to SA, which landed in Johannesburg at 10:55 on February 18
C
AST your mind back to the first time you boarded a flight to anywhere. For most of you the sheer exhilaration of flying has since all but disappeared, the novelty long gone. But for me, with the firstever A380 flight from Paris to Johannesburg, that thrill has returned. The landing of Air France’s second A380 is one of the most significant events to happen in SA’s aviation history. In fact it’s right up there with SAA’s first B747 landing in Johannesburg in November 1971. While initially Air France will only operate the A380 three times a week, once the third aircraft is delivered (probably by the end of April) it will be introduced on the route daily. I must confess the thought of boarding an aircraft as portly as the A380 along with 537 other passengers conjures up images of Noah’s Ark. But it takes just 50 minutes (the same as it would to board the B777) to fill the aircraft as there are three air bridges connected to the aircraft, including one specifically for upper-deck passengers. While the A380 may look

ungainly she’s a dream on take off racing down the rainy French runway with the grace of a dancer and quieter than any aircraft I’ve ever flown in. As it races along the runway at a deceptively slow speed, absolutely nothing shakes or shudders; it’s smooth and seamless, much like a Volvo taking to the skies. According to Air France, the A380 actually generates half as much noise as a B747400 on takeoff. It actually sounds like far less than that. I hear a passenger in front of me talking to someone as clearly as if she’s sitting right next to me. And in just 45 seconds we’re airborne. Having left Charles de Gaulle at 23h45, dinner service is only completed at 02h00, but the passengers on board don’t seem to mind as they set about exploring such features as the on-board art gallery on the upper deck and the bars. Mercifully, the image I’d had of passengers jam-packed in a sardine-like configuration couldn’t be further from the truth. The Voyageur economyclass section with its 449 seats, including 106 on the upper deck, is a comfortable
3-4-3 configuration with a 48cm-wide chair, a 21cm video screen and more leg-room. There’s even a bar, actually three bars, for economy-class passengers. The Video on Demand entertainment system allows each passenger to select a programme from 600 hours of viewing, including about 100 full-length movies and a jukebox of 240 CDs. For Affaires Business-class passengers travelling on the upper deck (80 seats), there are two bars. The seats are in a 2-2-2 configuration and an improved 2m-long seat with a 38cm video screen has also been introduced. There are only nine seats in first-class (La Première) and for the first time ever, a changing cabin so passengers can change into their sleeping suits. Improvements have been made to the seat and a bar with magazines and a buffet is also available. At exactly 10h55, AF 990 lands at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International – the landing every bit as polished as its elegant cabin crew. The first commercial A380 flight to South Africa and the African continent has touched down.

NEWS Stop Press TNW has been alerted to rumours circulating among SA-based travel trade that Queensgate Hotel and Leisure is in financial difficulty. Tour operators that currently hold bookings for rooms have been told that Queensgate no longer holds a lease agreement for the Park Inn/ Inn on the Square property in the Western Cape and, as a consequence, must repay
their deposit and claim their original deposits back from Queensgate. A further indication that the company may be experiencing financial difficulty is the recent closure of its ONEwellness spa at the Sandton Isle in Johannesburg. Asked for comment, Queensgate’s Clive Musikanth would only say: “It’s business as usual.”

SA Rogers Aviation has confirmed that Indian carrier Jet Airways plans to launch daily flights from Mumbai to Johannesburg starting April 14. The date and flights schedules are, however, still subject to government approval. The airline plans to operate
an A330-200 aircraft on the route in a two-class configuration, with 30 seats in business class and 190 in economy class. The preliminary flight schedule will see flights departing Mumbai at 02h05, arriving in Johannesburg at about 07h35. The return service will depart Johannesburg at approximately 11h00, arriving
in Mumbai at around 23h30. Garth James from Buchanan Execu Travel says: “Very welcome news. I hope Jet flies into both Durban and Johannesburg and serves both Mumbai and Bangalore.” Rana Naidoo from Ubuny Travel (eTravel) also thinks it’s great news but that fares must be good and special add-ons should be given internally in India. ■

in the Port Elizabeth and East London region we are very pleased to announce that we have been able to re-introduce this important service. Our first flight on Monday is already fully booked,” said Airlink ceo, Rodger Foster. The morning flight departs PLZ at 07h00 and the return service departs ELS at 08h05. The afternoon flight departs PLZ 16h30 and the return service departs ELS at 17h35. An additional feature of the service will be the inclusion of a PLZ-Mthatha return flight, which will operate on Fridays. This routing will be to exchange the aircraft, which

We anticipate being able to make announcements in the days ahead about further improvements to our network as the four additional 37-seater Embraer ERJ135 regional jets, which have now been delivered to us, are introduced into service,” said Rodger. ■

Rate squeeze has ripple effect Max Marx
F
IVE-star properties have been putting pressure on four-star properties by significantly discounting their rates over the past few months, according to some hoteliers. The four-star Peech Hotel in Melrose, Johannesburg, has been forced to discount its rooms because of rate pressure applied by fivestar hotels, according to gm, Tarryn Scheuble. “As a small boutique hotel with only 16 rooms, to constantly discount our room rates to remain competitive is not sustainable. Some five-star hotels have been selling their rooms online at a quarter of the price they usually sell them for and the rates are, at times, lower than our corporate rates.” Tarryn says The Peech is working hard to create something special for guests, be innovative with specials, and keep its corporate rates competitive to retain corporate clients. The four-star Quatermain Hotel in Sandton has also lost business to five-star hotels in the Sandton area, which, according to Rosey Chilewitz the hotel’s gm, have been discounting their rates rather substantially. “We used to rely only on word of mouth and repeat business but have now had to employ a marketing person to knock on doors.” She says four-star B&Bs have also been impacted, especially with corporate clientele who have opted for five-star establishments where they can get a room at four-star rates.
“These developers are threatening the viability of businesses that have been running good, healthy occupancies at achievable rates for years.” – Clifford Ross Brett Dungan, Fedhasa ceo, says all hotels are under rate pressure in the recessionary climate, and five-star hotels are discounting rates to maintain the occupancies they need to survive. Phillip Couvaras, gm of Cape Town’s The Table Bay Hotel and Fedhasa Cape Town chairperson, agrees saying that five-star hotels are dependent on international arrivals. “With arrivals down due to the economic disasters in the UK and US, these hotels will be suffering heavily and some will make the decision to drop their rates as they move focus to fill displaced business.” Five-star brands were particularly impacted
during December as people downscaled, forcing hotels to discount their rates, says Danny Bryer, Protea Hotels’ revenue management director. “Some of those hotels are still engaged in a price war, particularly those who don’t have brand equity in the market and are looking to buy business.” The last thing a five-star hotel should do is get involved in a price war because it will take the hotel years to recover, says Danny. “The most important issue is to maintain brand standards and your five-star value in the mind of the customer. Hotels that are holding prices in the five-star market will succeed over time.” Clifford Ross, City Lodge Hotels ce, notes that the market is suffering the folly of overzealous developers who have not achieved the occupancies they’ve planned for because of oversupply and are therefore discounting rates. “These developers are threatening the viability of businesses that have been running good, healthy occupancies at achievable rates for years, and who are now being forced to discount their rates to get business because the market to which they are appealing is not there.” He adds that discounting does not necessarily result in more rooms being sold and could spell disaster for the hotel involved and the industry at large, as fourstar hotels are pressed to sell at three-star rates, and so it spirals. “If you are priced right for the market to which you’re appealing, you should not need to resort to
discounting to get business.” Meanwhile, Phillip expresses concern over what is to come after the World Cup. “I have a feeling it’s going to be very quiet. If hotels are feeling the
pressure now, even while there’s demand from the various interest groups involved with the World Cup, what is going to happen when those interest groups are no longer here?”
What are other hotels doing? Brian Davidson, Legacy Hotels and Resorts group sales and marketing director, says that with so many new hotels opening in Sandton, there are a lot of interesting pricing strategies going on. “We don’t get involved. The cheapest offer, which went out from The Michelangelo over the festive season, was for one-night weekends at R2 350 per couple per night, including dinner and breakfast. For The Michelangelo, The Michelangelo Towers and The Raphael Penthouse Suites, we maintained our rate integrity and grew our average rates nicely in 2009 compared with 2008.”
Priya Naidoo, Southern Sun Hotels gm of communications, says that while there are many challenges in the current trading conditions, Southern Sun maintains its current pricing philosophy and continues to be brand focused. “Our dynamic pricing environment allows us the flexibility to price our hotels on demand and we continue to offer value-for-money packages such as our Sunbreaks offers that create great leisure specials for our domestic travellers.” Meanwhile, City Lodge does not involve itself in short-term discounting “solutions”. ■
No EK A380 for SA yet Natalia Thomson COULD Emirates be the third airline to bring the A380 to South Africa? Aviation bloggers believe the airline will introduce the A380 on the Durban and Johannesburg routes during 2010. Emirates denies this, despite its status as a sponsor of the 2010 World Cup, saying simply that “no decision on operating the A380 has been taken”. It does, however, say it can be “flexible” with its fleet to accommodate any surges in
demand. Demand, it says, is coming from all over the world, including China, Australia and the Middle East. “There is a lot of interest from the European qualifying countries, in particular the UK, France and Germany. Early signs show that the five nations currently topping the leader board for numbers of packages booked are: UAE, UK, Hong Kong, USA and Australia.” Subject to government approval, the airline is also allegedly hoping to base some aircraft in South Africa to operate local routes. ■

IMBABWE is rebranding, Paris is revamping its image, Thailand is promoting adventure tourism, while India is touting medical tourism. Namibia and Zambia are hoping to capitalise on South Africans escaping the World Cup, the UK is gearing up for the 2012 Olympic Games, Switzerland wants to underscore its value for money and Dubai is riding out its economic crisis and has just launched Burj Khalifa, at 828m the world’s tallest building. This was some of the news received from the Association of National Tourist Office Representatives (Antor) at a recent workshop in Cape Town. Ndaipaneyi Mukwena, the Southern African area manager of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, said the new unity government in Zimbabwe had ushered in a new era for Zimbabwean tourism with renewed interest in the country. She said the tourism ministry had been given the responsibility to drive economic growth. “The introduction of the US dollar has stabilised the economy and economic activity is starting to come back and shelves are full

The tourism industry is smiling because this will bring the people back.” Wendie White, Southern African director of the Dubai Representative Office in South Africa, said tourism was down 11% last year, “but accessibility made it easier for us to ride out the storm”. She said prices for Dubai had dropped by 30% because of availability. The world’s first Giorgio Armani hotel is scheduled to open on March 18, occupying 37 floors of the 160-storey Burj Khalifa. Carina Fourie, Switzerland Tourism’s SA representative, reminded agents that South Africans now need a Schengen visa to enter the country. Visa turnaround time is about three days. She said contrary to popular belief, Switzerland was cheaper than other European cities such as London or Moscow, and offered good value because of its high standard budget accommodation options, self-catering and farm holidays. Affordable holidays were also possible in India, where medical tourism was a fast-growing affordable option for people who had no medical insurance in their home countries, said TW Sudhakar, director (Africa) of India Tourism. ■

EPORTS on overpricing by Cape Town accommodation establishments are based on perception rather than reality, according to an independent survey conducted by capeinfo. com and endorsed by Cape Town Tourism (CTT). The survey was launched in January to establish accommodation booking and pricing trends for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. According to CTT, it revealed that the majority of Cape accommodation establishments are charging responsible rates during the tournament. In January, 31,63% of respondents were charging the same price (or less) as they would in peak season, shifting to 57,37% in February. The survey also shows that 75,32% of establishments are currently charging no more than 20% above their peak season rates. Establishments that received bookings were up from
34,61% in January to 46% in February. CTT spokesperson, Lianne Burton, says: “The astronomical prices of luxury private villas on the ocean’s edge are not a true representation of the cost of staying in Cape Town during the World Cup.” The Cape tourism industry has committed to a code for responsible pricing aimed at preventing price gouging, mindful that exploitation discourages repeat business. “We are encouraged that many of the businesses that are guilty of overpricing have now embraced the call by CTT and Fedhasa to cap rates in the region of peak season levels,” Lianne says. After attending WTM in London in November, Lianne found that overpricing was a bigger issue for UK travellers than perceptions of safety and security. She also reminded tourism business owners that Sydney and Athens experienced a decline in visitor numbers after their Olympic events due to
perceptions of greed. “We know that, in line with current travel trends internationally, there will still be a lot of last-minute bookings, but we cannot afford to be complacent and allow a skewed perception of pricing to turn a potentially positive experience into a highly negative one. We are on the tail end of a recession, one that hit America and Europe very hard. "These are key FIFA World Cup source markets and they need a great value proposition right now,” she says. CTT will soon launch a dedicated section on its website (www.capetown. travel) where members who adopt responsible pricing in line with the code can advertise. The accommodation survey will continue to track changes in availability and pricing trends with monthly surveys until May. It can be completed on http://capeinfo.com. n
Code to counter Cape price gouging Hilka Birns CAPE Town’s tourism industry says it’s unified in its resolve to combat price gouging and damaging international perceptions of SA as “an expensive destination” ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Putting this into action, Cape Town Tourism (CTT) has formulated a Code of Responsible Pricing for Cape Town, which is endorsed by all tourism industry stakeholders in the province, including the City of Cape Town; the Western Cape Provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism; Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU); the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (Fedhasa); the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (Satsa), The Portfolio Collection; Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa; Backpackers South Africa; and the South African Association for the Conference Industry (Saaci). Finance, economic development and tourism MEC, Alan Winde, said the
industry met over concerns that “a few irresponsible opportunists” had been responsible for creating negative perceptions, resulting in a slowdown in bookings ahead of the World Cup. Alan said the tourism industry in general was being responsible and was seeking a meeting within the next two weeks with SA airlines to discuss their pricing. He said the industry would also meet next week with MATCH to discuss the impending April 10 release of spare hotel room capacity “so that it narrows pricing differences”. Under the code, the Cape tourism industry commits itself to: ● Fair value – creating fair and reasonable rates that are linked to current seasonal rates. ● Responsible tourism – underlying Cape Town’s commitment to be a destination that takes care of people, the planet and profit to the greater community. ● Sustainable tourism – tourism businesses will be mindful of creating a “good
value” legacy for Cape Town beyond the World Cup. ● Consumer protection – the tourism sector will refrain from adding hidden costs and fees that surprise and annoy consumers when they receive their bill. “The code is an important charter,” says CTT spokesperson, Lianne Burton. “The industry is eager to ensure that Cape Town’s good reputation is not spoiled by greedy individuals out to capitalise on a few weeks at the expense of a responsible sector that has worked incredibly hard to put destination Cape Town on the top of every traveller's wish-list.” The industry will be asked to sign up to and adhere to the code and CTT will promote awareness of it through its international PR network. Soccer fans will be advised to look for adherence to the code as a sign of quality and value. Establishments wishing to sign up should contact Cape Town Tourism on 021 487 6800 or email enver@capetown.travel. n

The branded Bbagzz bags also offer a marketing platform for companies wishing to brand their own range of bags, thus creating a novel and moving billboard for your company logo, an image or promotion. ■

Shanghai Shanghai, nicknamed ‘The Travellers’ Paradise’ and described as China’s New York, is becoming an affordable and popular destination for South Africans. Sue Lewitton finds out more...
Shanghai welcomes the world in 2010
S
HANGHAI will be thrust into the spotlight this year as it hosts the 2010 World Expo, an event that aims to highlight worldwide initiatives for better urban living conditions. An influx of around 70 million tourists is anticipated during the course of the event, which will run for six months from May 1 until October 31. Although the expo is expected to draw a large
number of business people, it seems leisure travellers are just as keen to get in on the action. Benjamin Zhang, ceo of China Experience, says he has had a large number of enquiries from leisure travellers who want to experience the event. “As we saw with the Olympic Games, when the Chinese do something they don’t play games, so this is going to be an extremely hi-tech and state-of-the-art
display of international achievement.” The expo will be held at a site covering 5,28 sq km, spanning both sides of the Huangpu River. As construction draws to a close on the expo site, major construction on hotels and transport infrastructure is also nearing completion in the city, including an additional 420km on Shanghai’s Metro network.

Friendliness goes a long way Scenario: Flights from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth over the 2010 Soccer World Cup to attend a wedding, leaving June 11 and returning June 13.
Sure Penzance Travel, Alberton A busy agency, humming with activity, Sure Penzance Travel is open, light and inviting. I was immediately welcomed by Millicent Ntsuntsha. She took down my details and managed to find flights for R2 433 per person on British Airways. Professional and efficient, Millicent was also very friendly and advised me about car hire. She was ready to book the flights but I asked her if I could confirm with my partner before we went ahead with the booking. Gracious and understanding, she printed out the quote for me and, without pressurising me, let me know what time the agency closed so I could call her in time to make the booking. Bubbly and friendly, Milly is certainly an asset to Sure Penzance. I left feeling that although my booking was a small one, it was in good hands.

Flight Centre, Alberton
This was a very professional and well laid out agency and the efficient service matched the surroundings. Although the agent who helped me was courteous, I couldn’t help but feel I was being given a once over (perhaps it was because I had been driving through Alberton in scorching heat and looked a little worse for wear!). She managed to find flights on 1time for R8 396 for both passengers and R5 120 per person on SAA. She called a tour operator to see if a package would have cheaper flights but the tour operator could not assist. She quoted car hire but could not quote for a bed and breakfast. Although very helpful and professional, she did not give me her details or ask me for mine.

Situated in Alberton City, the branch is well positioned for walk-in clients. Although inviting, the agent I spoke to seemed to be in a rush. She quoted R5 000 per person on 1time and R6 120 per person on SAA. The consultation lasted all of 10 minutes. Assuming that I would not have the means to afford the quoted prices, she suggested that I drove or hitchhiked. She didn’t ask if I would need car hire or accommodation while in Port Elizabeth. Although she gave me her card, she did not take down my details. While an agent may be busy, friendliness goes a long way in establishing a rapport with a client.

n Iberia introduces new baggage policy
IBERIA has announced a new baggage policy with larger allowances for business-class travellers on short- and medium-haul routes and smaller allowances for the lowest fares on long-haul flights. The new allowances: ● On short- and medium-haul flights, tourist-class passengers can still check 23kg of luggage but in a single piece. Business-class passengers’ allowance is raised from 30kg to 46kg in two pieces of up to 23kg each. ● Travellers who have booked the lowest fares on long-haul flights may check only one bag of up to 23kg – no longer two as previously. Passengers with full-fare tourist, excursion or company-rate tickets may continue to check in two bags with no charge. ● Iberia Plus, Platinum, Gold and Silver cardholders can always check an extra piece of luggage, regardless of the fare. The new policy will take effect on March 1 but will not apply to tickets purchased before those dates. Passengers will be able to pay for additional luggage on www.iberia.com when checking-in online, with an additional price reduction. The airline’s carry-on luggage remains unchanged. Each economy-class passenger can still carry one piece of up to 10kg. For reasons of security and to facilitate boarding and vacating aircraft, Iberia will continue to be very strict in ensuring that the hand luggage conforms to weight and size specifications. n TK refund notice TURKISH Airlines is advising agents to check all the rules and regulations before issuing tickets as it has come to the airline’s attention that some agents are asking for refunds on tickets that are non-refundable. Agents are also reminded that name changes are strictly prohibited on any e-tickets. n QF opens availability for June and July AS a result of the high volume of enquiries and demand for overseas holidays during the World Cup 2010, Qantas has opened availability from V class upwards for departure during June and July. Europe has plenty to offer South Africans in 2010 and has become an attractive option for the mid-year getaway. Melody Brandon reports…
Escape to Europe over 2010

O destination offers culture, history and modern experiences quite like Europe. With the opportunity for travellers to visit numerous countries in one trip, the only difficulty will be choosing where to go. “Travelling to Europe for the June/July holidays will cost less than a local holiday,” says Kelly Jackson, gm of Contiki. A 21-day Contiki European camping trip costs R15 190 (R723 per day). “Compare that with the cost of a local hotel over the same period and see the difference. Plus our day rate includes accommodation, breakfast, 60% of dinners, transport, sightseeing, hotel tips and local taxes,” Kelly explains. She says Contiki’s biggest travelling months for 2010 are June, July and August. “You would be surprised how many people will pay to get out of town. We also have a lot of working parents who are buying Contiki holidays for their children to keep them occupied during the longer school holidays.” Inge Dobihal, owner of Austria Connection, says because July is off season in many cities, travellers can snap up great discounts. “Most people in cities in Europe go on family holidays to the mountains or the beach over July.”

While the price of packages is right, getting to Europe may be tricky with high airfares. Nicolas le Roux, gm of Trafalgar Tours, advises agents to be flexible when quoting clients. “We can see clients are resilient when it comes to higher airfares but I would advise agents to quote clients direct and non-direct options and let the client decide. Having said that, compared to regional and domestic travel, the client will see the total package on offer is more affordable.” Meanwhile, Afriqiyah Airways has seen a definite increase in demand for flights to Europe over the World Cup. “We have seen a steady increase in seat load factors into Europe, especially Amsterdam and London. “Passengers travelling to Europe over this period will benefit from experiencing Europe at extremely low airfares on Afriqiyah Airways,” says Michell Fourie, spokesperson for the airline. The airline has not limited or blocked availability in the lowest booking classes, allowing agents to book without any difficulty. “If agents need advice on booking our flights they can call our team of experts in reservations to assist them in finding the best deals,” Michell says.

The package price is for a family with two children, under the age of 12.

Forming part of the new developments is the new Peermont Metcourt hotel with 44 rooms and suites, a conference centre, multipurpose entertainment and events arena, sports bar and outdoor facilities. In addition, the existing casino interiors will be upgraded and the restaurant will be revamped and enlarged. With the expansion, the resort will take on a new identity as the Umfolozi Hotel Casino and Convention Resort. The property will have two levels – the upper level features the newly revamped Shaka’s Grill, while the lower level overlooks a central courtyard. The swimming pool will be part of the hotel. A shaded walkway will take guests to a conference facility that can seat 600 people cinema-style and will also include a climbing wall and a unique event facility for corporate functions and team-building sessions. Guests will have direct access through shaded walkways to the new Salon Privé, which will feature slot machines and roulette and blackjack tables adjacent to the gaming floor and exclusive parking for Salon Privé guests, including a separate entrance into the gaming area.

Before even touching South African soil, kulula’s latest aircraft design has become a global ‘hit’. The exterior paint scheme is a tongue-incheek guide to the various parts of the plane’s interior, such as the ‘Mile-high initiation chamber’. The aircraft is just one of eight new B737-800s, each featuring its own unique livery. They will replace kulula’s current B737-400 fleet and will enter service this year. The first Boeing, branded with the ‘Flying 101’, arrived in Johannesburg on February 8 and started operations on February 13. The second aircraft is currently undergoing its transformation and will appear to kulula fans much like an oversized container box with the words ‘this way up’ printed on the side QUICK READ FOR DECISION-MAKERS

Corporates lash SAABIZ for poor customer service Natasha tippel
S
AA has been in the spotlight lately with various negative reports regarding the airline’s customer service. First there was Voyager and issues with the call centre, then flysaa was temporarily shut down and now customers are complaining that SAA’s corporate call centre, SAABIZ, is down. TNW began investigating the issue after receiving numerous complaints from corporates, who now say they wish to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation by SAA. The corporates are frustrated that they can’t get through to SAABIZ. One complaint is that when trying to phone the centre on 011 978 5290, the call is directed to SAA’s main call centre. From there the customer is either
disconnected, told by the operator that the call centre is down, transferred to another call operator or given another number that does not exist. “We have been trying to reach the dedicated SAABIZ call centre since January 15 to lodge a new credit card. This is obviously something that cannot and may not be done through the public call centre,” says a frustrated corporate. When you dial the SAABIZ number, the call is automatically transferred to the general SAA call centre. There is no announcement. The only way we can tell is because we know and can distinguish between the two call centres’ greetings. “Having gone through the general call centre, we ask to speak to the corporate call centre. The operators have given the following replies: ‘The call centre is down’;

“It is still amazing how many clients cannot understand why flights are full departing and arriving in South Africa during the June/July period. While we warned all our corporate clients last year already that flights would be at a premium during this period and to please book as soon as possible, we are still getting requests for large groups of people attending overseas congresses.” Burnice Muir, Burns Cunningham Corporate Travel “We are finding more and more people who want to ‘escape the Soccer Mania’ and travel abroad over the June/July period. Finding decent airfares is, however, proving more and more challenging as we get closer to ‘kick-off’.” Leanne Moore, SATC Travel Dimensions eTravel is the ITC market leader in South Africa and assists senior Travel Consultants and Travel business owners to realise their dreams. ‘That number isn’t working any more’; ‘I will put you through’ (to no avail); ‘It is very strange, you cannot speak to them’, and various variations and repetitions of the above. “Finally, I managed to get hold of an operator who (after consultation with her supervisor) told me that
“It seems that this department no longer exists and my phone calls are being dealt with by very inefficient call centre operators” the SAABIZ call centre had been closed down, although she wasn’t sure when this happened. Meanwhile, I got through to another lady, who confirmed that the call centre was closed down during November or December. She could not understand why I had got the various explanations (as mentioned above), but all the same, she was not sure herself when the SAABIZ call centre was actually closed down.” This corporate, like many SAA customers, is asking why SAABIZ’s clients were not informed of the changes. “Why was there not so much as an announcement on the website? Why were the public call centre operators not informed? How can SAA decommission a complete call centre and leave one person with ‘two phones ringing constantly’ to deal with extremely sensitive issues such as credit card lodging?” Another corporate has experienced similar problems with SAABIZ. “During these past two weeks (Jan 22Feb 6) it has been impossible to do online bookings on the SAABIZ website and I have had countless frustrations when phoning SAABIZ. It seems that this department no longer exists and my phone calls are being dealt with by very inefficient call centre operators. “The phone calls that I make to SAABIZ are mainly for changes on my existing bookings and processing payment thereafter. Under normal circumstances, these types of telephonic transactions with SAABIZ never exceed eight minutes. Now, they make me hold on the phone for never less than 30 to 40 minutes just
to process a payment on one existing booking! When on the phone with them, I have a conversation of about three minutes with the operator explaining the situation and then I am put on hold for at least 10 minutes. In two instances, I was even cut off by the operator I was dealing with after he/she put me on hold for over 15 minutes.” A former SAA employee from the first team to work on SAABIZ resigned because of frustrations with the product. “This excellent product and tool is not recognised by SAA management. I went through a few hair-raising periods where we did not know whether we had jobs or not. “The big accounts, such as Nando’s and McDonald’s, were willing to give SAABIZ a chance due to its value. The fact that credit cards were lodged for small to mediumsized companies with no pressure of revenue figures worked perfectly for a lot of companies. How could a product so brilliant not be promoted and taken care of by management?” says the former employee. However, SAA has denied claims that the SAABIZ department has shut down. “South African Airways has not closed SAABIZ and this service is still in place and operational,” says SAA acting head group corporate affairs, Vimla Maistry. “We have, however, experienced some service disruptions following the outsourcing of our call centre late last year to Merchants/Dimension Data.” According to Vimla, SAABIZ is currently being serviced through the central reservations number 011 978 1111 while SAA seeks a sustainable, longer term solution that includes the setting up of a dedicated SAABIZ helpdesk. “Discussions around this are progressing well and at an advanced stage. As a further effort to ensure increased efficiencies, we are placing experienced staff in the call centre to transfer skills and to increase the present level of knowledge. “Numbers dedicated to ONBIZ /SKINS clients are 011 978 5290 and 011 510 8468. We sincerely apologise to any of our SAABIZ customers for delays experienced in handling their requests.” n
