North Shore Schools Top K-8 Ratings
The North Shore School District has announced that Sea Cliff School (#11) and Glen Head School (#12) were among the top “2022 Best K-8 Schools” recognized by U.S. News & World Report. North Shore Middle School was ranked #30. Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Dolan, said, “Given that the scoring used to establish the top elementary and middle schools in the state was almost entirely rooted in students’ performance on mathematics and reading/language arts state assessments, this is truly an earned honor. By focusing on academics, these rankings provide parents insight into a key element of school quality: commitment to an academic program and the provision of resources to students and staff.” He continued, “I heartily congratulate all three off these Principals and their staffs.”

The methodology for the brand-new rankings focuses on two areas: math and reading proficiency, or how well students perform on state assessments, and math and reading performance, or how well they perform compared to expectations. Based on data from the U.S. Department of Education, the Best K-8 Schools rankings only include public schools. The state assessment data used in the rankings is from the 2018-2019 school year and therefore pre-dates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on test-taking.
Glen Head School Principal Dr. Peter Rufa said, “I am so proud of the work our teachers do each day to support our students’ academic development. By creating a caring and innovative learning environment our students have become committed individuals who possess a deep love of learning. There is nothing we cannot do when we are all working together and our students, parents, faculty, and staff should truly celebrate because this is a tremendous accomplishment!”

Steadman also discussed the goals of Eudora Farms:
“We want to bring an educational portion to the public. Not too often that people get to witness animals like this and we’re all about animal conservation and preservation, but the first step of that is education.”
If exotic animals weren’t for you, there were also lots of chances to see the circus, as the Royal Hanneford Circus performed their many acts under the big top every two hours. The Royal Hanneford Circus focuses on bringing a fresh look to family entertainment. Training starts early, as many performers have been in the circus their whole lives.
Carlos Rios, manager of the circus performance, spoke about what the event means to the performers. “It’s really nice for us, we always come to New York around this time. We get to see a lot of similar faces. We’re just really happy to be back every year with Dreamland Amusements.”
“I’m seventh generation myself, my son becomes eighth on my side and ninth on his mother’s side. We were born and raised in circus and show business and we travel for a living and do this every day of our lives. This is it for us,” Rios said.
Erickson also commented, “Being on the ground, putting your feet on the street, and really feeling the excitement of other people. The kids screaming on the rides, the smell of the food…it’s something real. You’re in the middle of something. You feel it. You feel the energy.”
